Air Missions

Pilots in fighter aircraft fly sorties to monitor

airspace and international borders, to provide

support for land and naval operations in global

missions – ready for action round the clock,

24 hours a day. In case of an alert, every single

minute is crucial, every move has to be accu-

rate. Pilots must be able to rely on the onboard

weapon systems – in air combat, in precise

engagement of ground targets at long distance

and, not least, for their own protection.

Sidewinder – procured worldwide as aircraft armament for air-to-air missi-ons. Maintenance and modernization of the AIM-9L missile family are offe-red by Diehl Raytheon Missile Systeme.

Owing to its broad product range of high-

ly advanced guided missiles, Diehl Defence

contributes to the protection and robustness

of national and allied armed forces. The highly

efficient precision weapons can be integrated

onto a variety of carrier platforms – for air,

ground or naval missions.

Guided Missile IRIS-T

IRIS-T (Infrared Imaging System-Tail/

Thrust Vector Controlled) is among

the most advanced short-range, air-to

air guided missiles worldwide. IRIS-T

is being produced within a Europe-

an cooperation program under the

industrial leadership of the subsidiary

Diehl BGT Defence. The missile has

been selected as standard weapon for

the Eurofighter, F-16, F-18, Tornado

and Gripen fighter aircraft.

IRIS-T has a high-resolution in-

frared seeker with a wide field of

view enabling air engagement in

the short and very short range, but

longer-range interception missions as

well. The target can be designated by

the airborne radar or via the pilot’s

helmet sight. Sophisticated real-time

image processing techniques ensure

precise control with optimum hit ac-

curacy as well as excellent ECM resis-

tance, also covering modern blinding

lasers. Simultaneously, thrust vector

control provides the missile with un-

surpassed maneuverability, enabling

successful engagement of targets be-

hind the aircraft. IRIS-T’s exceptional

precision in combination with a radar

proximity fuze also allows interception

of adversaries´ missiles.

Besides the six program nations Ger-

many, Greece, Italy, Norway, Sweden

and Spain, the air forces of Austria,

South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Thai-

land have procured the missile.

Sensor Technology

Development and production of seeker

heads focus on passive and active elec-

tro-optical sensors over the entire wave

lenght range. Dual-colour seeker heads

allow target acquisition in greater distanc-

es and in difficult scenarious. Intelligent

processing of sensor and image signals is

essential for EMC resistance and precision in

the target. Scalable electronics support de-

velopment of modular missile architectures.

Ground-Based Air Defence

Today, population centers, facilities and objects

such as camps of international forces in war and

crisis areas are exposed to air threats, partic-

ularly medium-range missiles, unmanned air

vehicles, rockets and grenades. Ground-based

air defence units contribute to safeguarding

airspace as well as protecting the population

and soldiers in action.

Compared with IRIS-T, the new IRIS-T SL missile has an enhanced rocket motor, a data link as well as an auton-omous GPS/INS navigation system.

IRIS-T SLM – Modern Air Defence Missile

System

Based on the new IRIS-T SL(surface-launched)

missile, Diehl Defence offers armed forces an

entire air defence missile system as a modern

and cost-effective solution. The highly mobile

and all-terrain capable, medium-range IRIS-T

SLM (Surface Launched Medium Range) pro-

vides comprehensive 360° protection against air

attacks by aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles

and guided weapons. It enables simultaneous

engagement of several targets, even at very

short range and with extremely short

reaction times.

Almost all modern multi-function radar

systems can be integrated into the air

defence system for air situation display

and target acquisition. IRIS-T SLM can

be employed in a mobile or stationary

manner. Due to its high degree of

automation, it is ideally suited for con-

tinuous operation with minimum staff

requirements.

Diehl Defence was contracted for the

development of the new IRIS-T SL

surface-launched guided missile by the

German Armed Forces for their Tactical

Air Defence. It has been designed for

easy integration into various existing

and future air defence systems due to

standardized and software-based/open

interfaces providing seamless connec-

tion to fire control systems.

IRIS-T SLS (Surface Launched Standard) uses the unmodified air-to-air missile IRIS-T for vertical firing is suited for air-space defence and object protection.

IRIS-T SLM (Surface Launched Medium Range) provides maximum flexibility for new weapon systems as well as for the modernization of legacy equipment.

Precise Engagement from

a Distance – Missiles for

Land and Naval Forces

Due to their excellent precision over long rang-

es, modern missiles enable effective engage-

ment of land and sea targets. As multi-function

weapons, missiles can bring their strengths to

bear in so-called MOUT (Military Operations in

Urban Terrain) scenarios.

The IDAS (Interactive Defence and Attack

System for Submarines) missile, the future

submarine weapon launched from submerged

submarines, is capable of precise determination

of the point of impact, regardless of whether

the target is in the air, at sea or on the coast.

RBS15 Mk3 – Long-Range Missile for

Engagement of Sea and Land Targets

Diehl Defence delivers the anti-ship missile RBS15

Mk3 as the main weapon for the German Navy’s

new K130 corvette. A special feature of the

German-Swedish missile is its capability of precise

engagement of land targets. Due to its high

maneuverability, the long-range, all-weather ca-

pable, fire-and-forget missile can track targets in

low-level flight directly above the water surface

and fly around or over islands at distances up to

and far beyond

200 km. It is extremely resistant to electronic

countermeasures and characterized by high

robustness against air defence sites employing

guided and tube weapons, for instance, by

unexpected evasive maneuvers during terminal

approach. The RBS15 Mk3 version, jointly devel-

oped by Diehl BGT Defence and Saab Dynamics,

is based on RBS15 Mk2 which has proved its

worth with the Swedish and other navies. The

RBS15 Mk3 missile is also offered as an air-to-

ship version for modern fighter aircraft.

IDAS (Interactive Defence and Attack System) is a future submarine weapon. IDAS is a joint project of the compa-nies Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft, Kongsberg and Diehl.

The guided missile SPIKE has been selected as armament of the PUMA armored infantry combat vehicle among others. EuroSpike GmbH, a joint venture of Diehl, Rheinmetall and Rafael, is missile provider.

Integration Center

In Nonnweiler (Saarland), the various assem-

blies of a missile, including rocket motor and

warhead, are integrated to the overall sys-

tem. In Überlingen at Lake Constance, the

launchers of the ground-based air defence

systems are equipped with the necessary

technology to accomodate and fire the

guided missiles.

The RAM Block II (Rolling Airframe Missile) guided missile posesses an upgraded radar seeker as well as considerably higher agility compared to preceding missile generations.

eral damage. The ammunition´s effectiveness

against targets under and behind cover helps

soldiers prevail in case of ambush. Diehl deliv-

ers ammunition solutions for land, air and naval

forces in the medium- and large-caliber range.

40 mm Infantry Ammunition

The 40 mm ammunition family

developed by Diehl Defence is used

to engage hard and soft targets at

distances of up to 1,800 m. Three

variants are available for soldiers in

combat: one fragmentation-effect

variant, one hollow-charge variant

and one airburst variant. The airburst

ammunition type has been specifi-

cally designed for engaging targets

behind cover. The various ammunition

types can be fired from all automatic

40 mm grenade launchers. A modern

high-performance fuze with pyrotech-

nical self-destruction ensures that sol-

diers and the civil population are not

endangered by duds after the end of

combat actions. In addition, the use

of insensitive explosives contributes to

the protection of soldiers in combat.

The 40 mm infantry ammunition of

Diehl Defence currently is in service

with the Bundeswehr and numerous

NATO partners.

Reconnaissance

and Protection

Terrorist-, bomb and rocket attacks, hidden

improvised explosive devices (IEDs): threats to

the health and life of soldiers on missions are

omnipresent.

Surveillance sensors, offering flexible employ-

ment, provide precise reconnaissance results

regarding activities in the air, at sea and on the

ground. Image processing technologies enable

a high degree of automation to relieve the

troops. Innovative developments in the field of

nonlethal effectors offer new possibilities for

the protection of forces as well as facilities.

of threats to ships by pirates and terrorist

attacks. The system demonstrates its strengths

above all in harbors and near the coast where

ships may be attacked from the water and land

and conventional radar systems quickly reach

their limits.

SIMONE tracks even very small suspicious

objects such as inflatable rubber boats or

persons swimming in the water and provides

24-hour/360° coverage of the ship’s immediate

vicinity. Automatic monitoring of the ship’s

environment also enables reliable detection of

man-over-board situations.

The monitoring system is suited for use on

yachts, cargo and passenger ships as well as

naval vessels. By employing infrared technol-

ogy, best image quality is also achieved at

night so that SIMONE may also be used as a night

navigation assistant.

SIMONE utilizes sensor modules which, depending

on the configuration, consist of different imaging

infrared sensors or visual cameras. An additional

sensor with high-resolution optics and rangefinder

verifies tracked objects and provides necessary fire

control data for a weapon system.

Mobility in the Terrain –

Tracks and suspension

When it comes to ensuring tactical mobility of

land vehicles in difficult terrain, tracks come

into play. Whether sand, swamps or rocky

ground, Diehl Defence tracks convert high en-

gine power into mobility – operating smoothly,

with little vibration and high endurance. As a

leading supplier, Diehl develops and produc-

es tracks and suspension components for a

variety of military vehicles worldwide. From

rubber-band to light-weight tracks - innovative

track solutions are always developed in close

cooperation with customers and vehicle manu-

facturers.

Light-Weight Tracks

The DLT 464E light-weight tracks for the

PUMA armored infantry combat vehicle sets

new standards. The newly developed tracks

carry vehicles with a total weight of up to 70

tons. Their skeleton design allows a

weight reduction of 20 to 30 percent

compared to conventional steel tracks

– without any compromise in terms

of safety and service life. Weight

optimization of the track components

is enabled by comprehensive simula-

tions to determine the exact distribu-

tion of forces. Furthermore, proven

characteristics of the conventional

Diehl system tracks are retained:

safety and reliability, long service

life, no maintenance, low vibration,

high maneuverability in a variety of

terrain conditions as well as low noise

development. The light-weight tracks

also use the proven quick-fit bayonet

system for rapid assembly as well as

replacement of the running pads and

additional traction aids for difficult

terrain. Further features include: easy

handling, low personnel requirements

and low maintenance costs.

Segmented rubber band tracks have proven their worth on the BV 206(S) armored personnel carrier of the Bundeswehr. Diehl’s segmented rub-ber band tracks are currently available for vehicles with a total weight of up to 20 tons.

Mastery of the suspension system is a prerequisite for perfect interaction of track links, bogie wheels, support rollers, idlers, damping rings and drive sprockets.

Running pads made of various rubber compounds are available, depending on the operating area. The rubberized grip improves traction in snow and ice.

Suspension System

Technical mastery of the entire suspension

system including all components is the pre-

requisite for reliable vehicle operation and

excellent handling characteristics. So-called

Intelligent Tracks are used in the develop-

ment of tank tracks, featuring an integrated

measurement system in the track tubes,

transmitting all forces occurring during

operation by radio to an evaluation system.

Based on real load cases, consistent design

solutions can be developed for light-weight

tank tracks – one of the major requirements

in modern vehicle concepts regarding nec-

essary weight reductions and reliability.

Ranging from heavy battle tanks to light

reconnaissance vehicles: military vehicles are

in use for decades, in operations, exercises

and in everyday military life. Maintenance

and repair services offered by Diehl guar-

antee armed forces high availability of

armored and nonarmored vehicles. Mobile

service teams support forces worldwide,

24 hours a day. Tactical and geographical

operating conditions may change consid-

erably over the years. Spare parts supply

becomes increasingly difficult after several

decades. Deployments in international

conflicts require enhanced protection

against the impact of improvised explosive

devices and anti-tank weapons. Additional

procurement of modern vehicle generations

is frequently not possible for cost reasons.

Diehl Defence offers comprehensive vehicle

modernization and upgrade solutions, from

assembly replacement to complete modifi-

cation. Projects carried out successfully by Diehl

Defence focusing on vehicle mobility cover

the M109 self-propelled howitzer originally

produced by the U.S. as well as other military

wheeled and tracked vehicles in the weight

category up to 30 tons. This includes different

M113 variants or the Russian BMP2/3 armored

infantry combat vehicle family. Upgraded

Powerpacks are developed and integrated on

the basis of commercially available and proven

components. Simultaneously entire Powerpack

is optimized from the engine to the suspension.

These high-performance Powerpacks consist

of new assemblies for engines, transmissions,

air-filter- and exhaust-gas systems, which are

matched to each other, as well as an air-condi-

tioning system for extreme climate zones. Thus,

a new high-capacity cooling system protects

the Powerpack against overheating even at

ambient temperatures of more than 50°C.

In the field of protection, various solutions for

bomblet and mine protection have already

been implemented, e.g. for the self-propelled

howitzer 2000 and the Leopard 2 battle tank.

If necessary, Diehl Defence makes use of a

network of reliable suppliers and coopera-

tion partners to offer the customer an overall

solution tailored to individual requirements. It

fulfills all operational requirements for a mod-

ern land system in terms of protection, mobility

and effectiveness.

Diehl Defence roof protection ele-ments protect against the impact of hollow-charge projectiles.

Mobility – Effectiveness – Protection

A vehicle comprises many different assem-

blies which must go together as an overall

system. Numerous aspects must be taken

into account in the system engineering

design of military vehicles. How are engine

forces transmitted to the suspension? How

does the weapon system operate under

vibration? What are the effects of increased

weight due to additional vehicle protection?

Do all crew members in the interior benefit

from air conditioning? These are questions

which can only be adressed with knowledge

of the overall system. Our systems engineers

work on integral vehicle solutions for every-

day and extreme use.

The newly developed AVePS (Active Vehicle Protection System) could also provide protection for lightly armored vehicles against anti-tank weapons and missiles.
