MSU Technology Environment
MSU is the on-campus Internet Service Provider
• NetID – key to students’ connectivity on campus • We provide email through Office 365 (Spartan Mail),
file storage (Google Drive), some software • Access to Student Information (stuinfo.msu.edu)

MSUNet Wi-Fi • Wi-Fi is available in all residence halls
• Available in all academic and common areas • Students in wireless halls should not bring routers or
access points as they have already been installed • Those that are not wireless can get Ethernet cables
and access points at the MSU Computer Store for discounted prices

Google Apps for Education (googleapps.msu.edu)
• Google Drive (Docs), Sites, Calendar, Contacts, and Classroom
• No Gmail
Course Management Systems (D2L) • Some classes may be blended or fully online • This is the way instructors share information with
students • Many students will use to submit assignments
MSU Computer Requirement
Each student must have a computer that can browse the Internet at high speeds
• Any operating system, make, or model • Chromebooks and tablets are not recommended as
primary devices, although technology is getting better
Check with the college/department – some may have specific requirements
Financial aid assistance available – check with Office of Financial Aid
Warranties Can the device be repaired locally?
• MSU Computer Store - Help and Repair is an authorized service provider for Apple, Dell, and Lenovo
• Students can obtain a loaner computer if computer was purchased at MSU’s computer store.
How long is the device under warranty?
• Consider an extended coverage warranty
Is accidental damage protection available?
• Check with place of purchase. Remember accidental damage protection is separate from manufacturer’s standard warranty.
Microsoft Office
Undergrad students using MSU Spartan Mail (Office 365) can download 15 downloads of Office for Macs and PCs.
Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote 1. Log into Spartanmail.msu.edu with NetID and
password. 2. Click on “Office 365” on top left.
3. Click the “Install now” button.
What About Software?
Antivirus protection is a must • A personal firewall and antispyware are strongly
recommended • No cost options: MS Security Essentials, Sophos
Educational pricing is offered on all items at the MSU Computer Store
MSU Computer Labs
Many locations across campus • Labs open whenever the building is open
Large software library • Between 75-200 software titles available, depending
on locations
• Average computer in lab has over $96,000 in software available to students
• High-end titles (AutoCAD, Photoshop, Mathematica)

Printing at MSU Print almost anything from anywhere
• Printers are in computer labs, engagement centers, many libraries, common gathering areas
Students can send their print jobs to these printers from any location including mobile devices
Payment via credit card, Spartan cash, or student receivables account
• 5¢ per page, black/white (one sided) • 40¢ per page, color (one sided)

• Comply with state/federal law, MSU policies • Authorized usage only • Respect the privacy of others
• Don't disrupt systems or networks • No commercial use of MSU facilities
File Sharing Illegal file sharing is a real issue
• MSU receives many complaints each month
• Offenders face fees, loss of network access, possible suspension, and possible lawsuits from copyright holders
• If students have file sharing software on computer at home, they should remove it before coming to MSU
