2. History Began to appear in the early 1950s on the streets of South and West London.Their dress code and rebellious pose made them popular subjects for the expanding media of magazines and television in the 1950s.They became a media folk devil, but the media also publicised them until they became a nation wide teenage style and the first post-war teenage subculture.The media constantly attempted to discredit the Teddy Boys by mocking their appearance.Teddy Boys were the first youth group in England to distinguish themselves as teenagers, helping create a youth market. 3. Fashion As inner-city working class youth they took the expensive Edwardian 'Ted' suits designed for wealthy city gents in the early 1950s, and the 'drape' jackets favored by the growing number of American rock 'n' roll stars.The Teddy Boy image sent a powerful message. The adoption of upper class dress by working class youths.They usually wore dark shades, sometimes with a velvet trim collar and pocket flaps, and high-waist "drainpipe" trousers, often exposing the socks. The outfit also included a high-necked loose-collared white shirt and their favoured footwear included highly polished Oxfords, chunky brogues, and crepe-soled shoes, often suede.Their iconic hairstyles included long, strongly-moulded greased-up hair with a quiff at the front and the side combed back. Another style was the "Boston", in which the hair was greased straight back. 4. Music The Teds fully embraced the American Rock and Roll music, and would be found lurking around the bars, bopping around and drinking.A well-known dance that the Teddy Boys adopted was The Creep, a slow shuffle that came out in 1953, and was written and recorded by Ken MackintoshThey also listened and danced to jazz and skiffle music 5. Lifestyle The Teddy Boys formed gangs and were often involved in riots and clashes with rival groups- such as the mods.Their culture tended to be gang-led and were blamed for many of society's ills in the 1950s.They pursued gang warfare and vandalism in both the streets and the dance halls, carrying bicycle chains, razors and flick-knives beneath their fine Edwardian style clothesSome of the violent clashes with rival gangs which were often exaggerated by the popular press. The most notable were the 1958 Notting Hill race riots, in which Teddy Boys were present in large numbers and were implicated in attacks on the West Indian community. 6. Teddy Boys and Rockers got on well with each other and the leather motorbike jacket became the normal wear for many Teddy boys and Teddy girls for daytime use and for After The British pop boom of the 1960s,the first Rock and Roll pubs rough pubs.
