What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED hascreated a program called TEDx. TEDx is aprogram of local, self-organized events that bringpeople together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxAmsterdam, where x =independently organized TED event. At ourTEDxAmsterdam event, TEDTalks video and livespeakers will combine to spark deep discussionand connection in a small group. The TEDConference provides general guidance for theTEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

The TEDxReporter visits all kinds of TEDx Events. Oliver joined TEDxMaastricht.
Combining personal revelations, groundbreaking uses of existing technology, and someperhaps unnecessary props, the second edition of TEDxMaastricht showed change inhealthcare still has a long way to go.
“Please step out of the video and into your hologram”
Jelle Barentsz, pointed to the front row of men in the Vrijthof theater and said all of them wouldstatistically be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. The core of his presentation wasdemonstrating a secure video conference tool in which he conducted a live, global, multidisciplinary differential diagnosis using a set of high resolution MRI images from a patient’sfile. While that worked smoothly, the biggest surprise was that someone in the audience stood upand joined the meeting about symptoms and possible treatments – using his iPad (”because we allhave one”). I’m still not sure why this pretty sweet demo was staged with holographic-likeprojecting of premade videos from Jelle’s peer doctors. But hey, it looked spectacular.Setting the tone and raising the bar for the vast amount of speakers to follow, the always lovelyAldith Hunkar guided us through the day.

Clarissa Silva on stage after having severe agoraphobia (and worse)
Personally I was struck by the openness Clarissa Silva displayed when she shared her medicalhistory and turned it into a learning journey. After she was treated in a psychriatic ward for 18months she was anxious to leave the house and communicated mainly through her computer.Years later she finds herself giving workshops about empowerment and even giving a TEDxTalk.Bravo! She received the first standing ovation of the day and I think it was well-deserved. Clarissais one of those rare speakers who can go straight to your heart by just being theirselves.

Paul Levy’s soccer wisdom
I just want you to read the single most important sentence anyone has spoken at TEDxMaastrichtthis year: “One word of kindness can impact someone’s life in a way we might never evenknow”. Think about what Paul Levy means. Now think about what that means for you as a kindperson. And then just think of a person who has touched you in your life. Who is that? What did heor she say to you? Let’s be kinder to one another as you can never know how much meaning isattached to your words.

TED worthy: Bart Knols’ out-of-the-box mosqui-toes killing
Bart Knols overwhelmed the audiencewith 3 crazy outside-the-box scienceinventions to kill malaria mosqui”-toes”. In a series of scent experimentshe found the ultimate weapon todefeat malaria: if you take his specialpill and allow yourself to be bitten, themosquitoes die within an hour.
I think Bart leveraged the power of agreat story with an authentic stagepresence – and relevant props andentertainment supporting his story. That’s what makes him TED worthy. Ifyou can be relevant and witty at thesame time while demonstrating yourworld changing idea on the spot (as in:
sticking your arm into a box with 500 malaria-infected mosquitoes), that to me makes you a TEDhero. Was I clear? This is one of my favorite TEDxMaastricht Talks I think you would want to sitdown for and watch back.
Now what? Get the full report or review his TEDxTalk.

It’s our human nature
The general trend was to acknowledge the role of behaviour and communication in all areas of thehealthcare systems we are working with – whether it’s broken or not. As a social scientist Iconsider this a breakthrough. Even the general manager of GlaxoSmithKline proposed that whiletheir pills might work medically, they won’t work if people don’t accept using them or maybe evendon’t trust them. Whether the solution is dubbed (buzzword alert!) participatory healthcare, compassion for care or simply patient-centered, we are on a slippery slope towards a moredemocratized healthcare.
Although we didn’t see as muchgroundbreaking innovations, I thinkthis emerging trend is moreimportant than coming up withmedical technical innovations. It’sabout the people, not the pills.Putting compassion ahead ofprocedures. Making lives countbeyond the harsh counts of livessaved.
