The Empow®ment Zone is honored to be the site for the 2010 Teen Dream Night festivities. As Dr. King so aptly stated during his life, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” The persistent, stellar efforts of the MLK Dream Weekend committee over the last four years have wondrously set the stage to usher Greenville into a celebratory 5th year event that affords us the awesome opportunity to highlight the talents, skills and gifts of children in the Upstate area on an even greater platform.

MLK Dream Weekend, in conjunction with Empow®ment Zone, will host an event that will celebrate children’s gifts and talents, but also highlight and honor the diversity of those talents. From singing, to stepping, to rapping, poetry, and dancing; all music genres portraying positive messages will be accepted for entry. Each talent category will be judged separately so that judging will be amongst similar talent style.

Date of Finale: Saturday, January 16, 2010

Time of Finale: 7 – 9 p.m. / Teen Social 9 p.m. – Midnight

Auditions will take place beginning November 10, 2009 in four main categories: singing, stepping, dancing and rapping/poetry/comedy. Auditions are based on an online registration process with limited audition spots available for each category (8 spots for each of the four categories). Auditions will help to narrow down the pool of candidates selected to participate as finalists in the Finale event on January 16. The Empow®ment Zone will oversee the auditions and selection process utilizing qualified judges from the community to determine which talent will advance to the next level. All auditions will be held at Empow®ment Zone facility located at 775 Woodruff Road, Greenville, SC. For each round, including the Finale, each contestant will be evaluated on the following categories: stage presence, audience interaction, creativity, and overall performance. Each category can earn the contestant 0 – 5 points. Finale contestants will be scored by a panel of three judges (different from the judges used for the preliminary auditions). Additionally, those that make it to the Finale are required to prepare a 300 – 500 word declaration to be entered online, clearly addressing the following: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has inspired me to dream big. Because of his outstanding example, I know that I will make my dream a reality because… The essays will also be judged and worth up to 5 points. This score will be added to each participant’s overall talent score. One contestant per each of the four categories will be declared a winner for a total of four winners who will receive our prize package. The Finale is a live event with an anticipated audience of approximately 600 – 800 people.
