CSAC NEWS Thank you to everyone who sent in their Activity Fees and Volunteer Forms. We wish to remind those who have not yet sent in their fees, to do so as soon as possible. At the last CSAC meeting, council members and attendees were presented a summary of the innovative educational offerings available at nearby Don Bosco Secondary School. Several members of the school’s educational staff delivered the very informative presentation. Parents and students alike are encouraged to visit the school’s website at www.DBCSS.ca. TIME FOR YOUR CLOSE UP! We would like to encourage students, staff and parents alike to check out our new Student of the Month Board located to the right of the Gym doors. We felt that this would work well as a confidence booster for the students that receive it, and something the rest of the class can work towards.

Halloween Howl! CSAC held it's Annual Halloween Howl on Wednesday, October 31st. We would like to thank all of the parent volunteers for their hard work and dedication. Everyone had a “Howling” good time. We would also like to extend a special thank you to the Bruno Family for their dona-tion of pumpkins to each class.

We welcome your questions at anytime and we encourage you to attend our monthly CSAC meetings, held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, to stay up-to-date on all our initiatives. Our next meeting is November 21st at 7pm. Sincerely, Dana Delle Cese-Ahluwalia & Rob Berton Your CSAC Co-Chairs 2012/2013

TCDSB UPDATES Survey Regarding the Multi-Year Strategic Plan The Toronto Catholic District School Board approved its Multi-Year Strategic Plan 2012-2015 in last April. The Multi-Year Strategic Plan ( MYSP) includes revised mission, vision and values statements as well as a clear focus on six key strategic directions. The MYSP is the result of a comprehensive and collabo-rative process. In order to assess how well the MYSP is being communicated and implemented, the entire TCDSB community, as well as representatives of our partner organizations in Catholic education, will be (are) invited to complete a brief electronic survey that will be available online from November 1st to November 17th. Trustees, employees, parents, guardians, clergy, TCDSB ratepayers and community members will all be (are all) encouraged to take a few minutes to com-plete and submit the survey and provide feedback on the initial impact of the Multi-Year Strategic Plan 2012-2015. Please note that the Multi-Year Strategic Plan 2012-2015, hyperlinked Strategic Actions and supporting documents can readily be found on the TCDSB website: http://www.tcdsb.org/Board/Pages/MultiYearStrategicPlan.aspx Please check the Board’s website on November 1st and take time to complete the survey. Your input is much appreciated.

STUDENT LEADERS REPORT

WE DAY 2012 On Friday, September 28, thirteen Student Leaders were chosen to attend We Day at the Air Canada Centre. The event, hosted by Much Music’s Jesse Giddings, was motiva-tional and life changing. Celebrity guests such as Nelly Fur-tado, Shawn Desman, Jennifer Hudson and Hedley kept the audience of 100 000 students on their feet. Inspirational videos and speeches were viewed on the overhead screens, with countless pairs of eyes locked onto them. One of these videos was of Spencer West’s painful, yet hopeful, journey up Mount Kilimanjaro. His live appearance and message afterward made it all the more real and motivating for the youth surrounding him.

One fortunate student won a volunteer trip to India to help out the people there and, of course, to free the children. Fol-lowing her win, a dance group gave everyone a taste of In-dia and a chance to dance to the popular song Gagnam Style. Periodically, throughout the four hour show, the We Day Dance was performed with the students dancing along.

Each student was given a generous gift bag containing a book on We Day, sunglasses, blue chap stick, a raindrop necklace and a penny drive bag. Craig and Marc Keilburger informed the students about this penny drive. The govern-ment is stopping the circulation of pennies, so they want each student to collect twenty five dollars in pennies; enough to supply a person in a developing country with fresh, clean water for life. To show how fortunate we are to have clean water and to make us aware of conserving it, we were asked to put on our raindrop necklaces. The whole stadium went dark as the necklaces lit up. When we looked up, the stadium was illuminated with 100 000 blue lights, showing the impact that just one drop can have. The blue chap stick represented how lucky we are to have access to our needs, one of which is the mineral zinc. Most people in developing countries are malnourished and have a zinc defi-ciency.

We Day, I’m sure, is an experience no Student Leader will ever forget. Since 2007, We Day has given inspiration to every young student who was willing to listen.

PARENTS AND SCHOOL WORKING TOGETHER FOR A COMMON GOAL

Please visit the Father Serra Website at: http://www.tcdsb.org/schools/FatherSerra.asp, to view our School Learning Improvement Plan (SLIP) Catholic Graduate Expectations 2012 - 2013

Catholic education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and academic quest. The expectations of Catholic graduates, therefore, are described not only in terms of knowl-edge and skills, but in terms of values, attitudes and actions. Students on a journey toward graduation from a Catholic school are challenged to meet the Catholic Graduate Expectations. The Institute for Catholic Education explains more about the value of these expectations: “The launch of the Ontario Catholic

School Graduate Expectations was imbued with the hope that in them, all members of the Catholic education com-munity in Ontario would recognize themselves. Whether inside or outside the classroom; in both the elementary and secondary panels; from Board rooms to playing fields; from conversations among parents to those between the members of Catholic professional associations; these ex-pectations have succeeded in giving to us all a language that has brought a higher degree of clarity and a renewed sense of the distinctiveness and purpose that is publicly funded Catholic education in Ontario.”
