(President Message cont’d.) bring the regular coffee again but could use a volunteer to pick up a Box of Joe in decaf. If you could help out with this, I’m sure our decaf drinkers would appreciate it! Please let me know if you can help. I know this is new but I thought it made for a little something extra that encouraged our social time together. Please consider signing up for future months so we can continue to enjoy this treat. We are worth it! Thanks to all the wonderful members who helped me with setting up and taking down the tables and decorations! You ladies really helped me to make my vision come together for a new table setup. I could not possibly have done it without you. It means so much to have so many hands make the job lighter. What a great group we have! I look forward to seeing your lovely faces in February. You are each so wonderful and I truly appreciate the talent and friendships that we have here in PQs. Your MP (Madame President), Lori Lewis

2018 Membership Information (Teri Roberts)

At the January meeting, 38 members paid their dues; this is a really good start for membership dues. PQ dues are $30 and are due at the February meeting for members who haven’t paid. Please make your check payable to Procrastinating Quilters if paying by check or if you are paying with cash, please bring the exact amount. . If you need a PQ Name Badge, put your order in at the February 2018 meeting. Cost is $10 at the time you place your order. When there are 4 or 5 names on the list, an order is placed. Also, we are planning to drill holes in your badge (if you want), and attach a chain so that you can add charms to your name badge. If you have a badge that you want to add holes and chain, please bring to the February meeting. The PQ Facebook page is a closed group page, so only PQ members have access to see the information on the page. The PQ Facebook page will be updated with the current membership list after the March 15, 2018 meeting (which is the last day to pay your dues). Anyone who has not paid their dues by that date will not have access to our PQ Facebook page. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the February meeting, Teri Roberts (2018 Membership Chair)

Community Outreach (Gale Pittman, Chair)

Hello Ladies! We have an exciting and busy year lined up for our community outreach this year. Some of these projects will be yearlong collections while others will be for a limited time. I will summarize in case you missed the last meeting. Morton Plant Hospital - We will be making tummy time quilts for the hospital at 32 in square up to 36 inch square. They ask for us to also make teddy bears for the kids that go thru the ER and send a specific pattern to use. For our knitters and crocheters, they always need newborn size baby hats, chemo hats, scarves and lap quilts for the chemo treatment rooms. These are all ongoing projects. Instructions for newborn baby caps, chemo patient’s items and the teddy bear pattern can be found on the PQ website @ http://procrastinatingquilters.com/index.php/community-outreach/ and click on Crochet Baby Hat. Heaven on Earth for Veterans - We will need 30 placemats for the residents of the homes to give it that special feeling. You can make these as you like and I will let you know when we have reached the 30 that are needed. We will do a drive later in the year for cleaning supplies and laundry supplies. Pace Senior Center - The ladies there love to sew! If you are cleaning out your supplies and have good quality supplies to donate then I will take them to the ladies. They like to sew walker bags, aprons, and other community projects. I am sure they could use sewing machine needles and thread also. They would get the most use out of bigger cuts of fabric rather than quilting scraps. They also do art there so any coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, etc would be enjoyed. I will also keep an eye on the donation table at the meetings if there are supplies left that the ladies would like. Clothes to Kids - They collect good quality used clothes that is appropriate for school. They can always use school uniforms they say. Also shoes, belts, purses, costume jewelry, backpacks are in demand. Later in the year we will be doing a drive to collect new (in package) socks and underwear. The kids range in age from 4 to 18 , so if you see a clearance super sale and can pick up something for them I will be collecting for a late summer donation. Mease Countryside Hospital - Although we have supplied them with quilts for now, they still love the hearts. I know we are tired of making them but they are quick and use just the smallest amount of fabric. I will continue to take donations there also. And Pamela Hoscheit is in charge of a special ongoing charity project that is picking up steam faster than anyone could imagine. She will tell you all about it. We have lots of people in need and I always enjoy these projects. If you can help out and find a project you like then I am happy to pass on donations. I would like everyone to show their tummy time quilts to the group. They are SO CUTE and I would like everyone to see how prolific some of our quilters are when it comes to helping out the community. They are stunning quilts and will be cherished by the moms I am sure. Gale Pittman [email protected] Pamela Hosceit [email protected] Animal Beds – (Pamela Hosceit) - One of our new community outreach efforts is making animal beds (cats and dogs) for area shelters. This project was started by someone who visited many of the shelters looking for a neighbor’s lost dog. She discovered that there are over 300 animal shelters in the area and she noticed during her many shelters visits that most of the animals were sleeping on concrete. It broke her heart to see this situation. The shelters workers were interested in some sort of bedding for their animals (beds with and without stuffing, only using certain materials, have a barrier layer, etc). Now there is a waiting list from shelters wanting these beds. From what started as a comment on the NEXTDOOR app about 5 weeks age, the project has expanded into other localities and even the UK. This project has appeared on FOX 13 news once with another filming planned this week. The application for charity status has been filed

Programs (Penny Black)

February Meeting (Thurs., 2/15/18) & Embroidery Workshop (Sat., 2/17/18): Our February 15th meeting/program will be a lecture by Jennifer Lee. Jen is a hand embroidery instructor who owns an online quilt shop Red Thread Studio. Prior to her lecture Jen will be setting up her quilt shop at our meeting (get there early). You can learn more about Jen at redthreadstudio.com. Jen will also teach a hand embroidery workshop on Saturday, February 16 at Seville from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are taking the embroidery class with Jen Lee please bring your favorite small scissors, thimble if you use one and paper and pencil for taking notes. Class is scheduled to be held at Seville from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, February 17. Kit fee is $12 (please bring correct amount in cash) to teacher. Don't forget your lunch.

March Meeting (Thurs., 3/15/18) & Machine Appliqué Class (Sat. 3/17/18): The machine

appliqué class with Jan Cunningham will be held on Saturday, March 17. Class fee is $35 plus kit fee of $10. Location: TBA. This class teaches the method for machine appliqué that is featured in Sharon Schamber's book "Piece by Piece". Students will learn every step necessary to have appliqué look like you have done hand appliqué. Jan will also present her lecture "Confessions of an ADD Quilter" at our March meeting. Included in her presentation will be over 50 quilts five of which were made by her grandmother in the 1930's. The purpose of her lecture is to encourage quilters to think creatively and use their imagination. I will be collecting registration for Jan's class at our February meeting. Please call me if you have questions.... 727-372-6456. Penny Black

(Community Outreach Cont’d.) The response from the community has been so great in donating towels, blankets, bedspreads, sheets, anything make from fabric, pillows (for the inside stuffing), etc that a larger storage area was needed and has been donated free thru March. The current volunteers are wonderful women who want to help and you can make some new friends. Now sewers are needed. While we will be focusing on this project at our March charity set-and-sew, are you interested in helping now? Volunteers meet every Wednesday night about 5:30 PM though folks show up all thru the evening to help. Some volunteers will organize and cut material while others sew the beds. A larger location to meet is being acquired for this week as more volunteers are expected. If you can join us on Wednesday, please call me or text me 575-644-6080 or send me an email [email protected]. I need to give an estimated number of our guild volunteers to ensure we will have a large enough area for everyone to work. When you contact me, I can tell you this week’s location (and hopeful the location for the future). Also needed are thread (any color or kind) and machine needles – universal, heavy duty. If you have some to donate, please contact me and I will arrange to get them from you. So what kind, size, shape bed is wanted? Their answer: Any kind, size, shape. As each shelter has different requirements, whatever is made can be used somewhere. For size, think of the animal -kitten, puppy, cat, dog sizes from tiny up to great danes. What size bed would each one of those need? The beds are not decorative, materials don’t have to match, don’t finish edges unless it would ravel, have no design which is all against our quilting ways. This could be a good way to get rid of any fabrics, materials you have around the house. The current shelter order is for 3-4 towels plus 1 layer of blanket just sewn together around the 4 edges. Pictures and descriptions of some beds already made beside a yardstick to show their size can be found on our PQ website @ http://procrastinatingquilters.com/index.php/community-outreach/ and click on Pet Beds. They also have a Facebook page called Beds for All Paws. All of our efforts for this project will be greatly appreciated by animals and humans alike. And Gale and I thank you for all your help with community outreach.

2018 Quilt Retreat (Cathy Starman)

Churn Dash Paula A Riccio

I picked up the Florida Register for the month of January and February and started it reading it. My sister lives in Destin Fl and I noticed that there is a Quilt show there February 23 &24. I thought I could drive up there for a visit. In the ad for the quilt show it stated “Lets Churn Dash”. Well being a new quilter I had no idea what a Churn Dash is. So I Goggled Churn Dash and this is what I found. The Churn Dash is a 9-Patch quilt block; designed in 1800 and 1849. It has a resemblance of the triangle and rectangle perimeter of the block to a butter churn and the center square to the stick (or “dash”) of the butter churn. It was frequently one of the first patterns learned by young girls. Though it is a simple block, it also provides a challenge for advanced quilters because it lends itself well to very intricate designs. I started to do the 365 Challenge make a quilt block every day for a year. I think Janis posted it on PQ web site or on Facebook. Well don’t you think January 30th block was Churn Dash? Churn Dash pattern, for example, has 21 different variations and names to name a few Broken Plate, Picture Frame and Wrench. Now what are the odds of reading Churn Dash in an ad one day and the next day you have to make a block of the day and it is a Churn Dash pattern. Gee I wonder if it will be the pattern for the Mystery Quilt?

2017 President’s Message (Pauline Mallory)

JANUARY – Transition Board

Meeting

Thursday, 1/3/19,

Time TBD

Location TBD

2019 PQ President

You Will Need:

1 3/4 Cups All Purpose Flour

1 cup sugar

2 large eggs

2 tsp baking powder

pinch of salt

1/2 cup oil (vegetable, olive, etc)

1 tsp Vanilla extract

1 10-ounce jar maraschino cherries

Cream Cheese icing

First, preheat your oven to 350, grease 2 loaf pans and set aside. Drain your cherries, reserving the juice. Give your cherries a rough chop and coat them in about 2 tsp flour. (This will prevent your cherries from sinking). Next, combine your flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt together in a large bowl and stir together. In another bowl add your eggs, extract, oil, and cherry juice (reserve about 2 tsp of the juice for your icing) and mix well. Combine your wet and dry ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well. Your batter will be thick, and It’s supposed to be, don’t over mix it! Then, fold your cherries into your batter and mix. Pour your batter into your greased loaf pans, bake at 350 for around 40 minutes. Check them after 30. Next, add in your reserved cherry juice to a cream cheese icing (you can make your own or just buy some!) and melt. Pour your icing over your cake (after it has cooled!) and serve! https://madamedeals.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/bread7.jpg
