The Peek Award for Disability in Media will celebrate the legacy of Kim Peek, the Salt Lake native who served as the inspiration the Academy Award-winning film Rain Man. Dr. Grandin will be the first recipient of the Peek Award which will annually honor a subject, director, or actor in a film that has helped to shape the perception of disability in our society. Barry Morrow, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Rain Man, will present the award to Dr. Grandin and permanently loan his Oscar statuette to Salt Lake City in Kim Peek’s honor. Diagnosed with autism as a child, Dr. Grandin will discuss how her mind works—sharing her ability to “think in pictures,” making the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum. Dr. Grandin’s legacy is enormous as she is considered a philosophical leader of animal welfare and autism advocacy. THERE WILL BE A BOOK SIGNING IN THE LOBBY WITH DR. GRANDIN IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE EVENING PROGRAM. *Limited $150 VIP Tickets including a pre-reception with Temple Grandin available by contacting the Utah Film Center at [email protected] or 801-746-7000.
