BookSenseLesson 1: Introduction

Preparation:

1. If the BookSense came with an sd card, place it in the sd slot on the left side panel of the unit.2. Plug the BookSense in to charge it. The AC adapter plugs into the bottom panel of the BookSense. The battery will charge in a couple of hours.

If you are connecting the BookSense to a PC with the USB cable, it won't work. Even though you can’t use the BookSense when it is plugged into a PC with the USB cable, the battery is still being charged.

Goal: To become familiar with the BookSense.

Procedures:

1. Check to ensure the BookSense is unlocked. The lock-unlock switch is on the right side panel of the BookSense. Slide the lock switch toward the top of the BookSense to unlock the device. The top of the BookSense is where the headphone jack and the hook that you may fassin a carry strap to.2. The on-off button is on the right side panel of the unit above the lock-unlock switch. Hold the button in for at least two seconds. You'll hear the BookSense tone on.3. On the front face of the BookSense the top-most button is the time and date button. Try pressing this button nnow, though the time and date on the device may not be current.4. Below the time and date button are the navigation keys. The square button in the center of the four navigation keys is the menu button. It will take you into menu options or act as a select (ok) button.5. Press and hold the menu key for more than three seconds. You will be taken into a help mode. Try this now.6. Press the navigation buttons, numbered keys, and all other buttons to get to know their names and functions. The function of the keys change depending on the application program you are in when you go into help mode.7. Remember to try the switches and buttons on the left and right side panels of the BookSense.8. Hold down the menu button for at least two seconds to go out of learn

key mode.9. Hold the on-off switch for at least two seconds to turn the BookSense off.10. Read the information below.11. The information listed below will give you an idea of what each BookSense key does.

a. The rough part on the front face of the unit is the speaker area.b. Below the speaker area is the "announce the date and time" key.c. Below the announce the date and time key are 4 navigation keys with a square menu key in the middle.d. Holding the square menu key for more than two secods will take you into help mode. In help mode you can press the BookSense keys to hear what their functions are.e. Remember, function of keys will vary depending on which program mode you were in when you pressed the menu key to go into help mode.f. Programs on the Braille Sense are radio, media, daisy, and document reader .g. Pressing the menu key will take you to the menu of whatever program you are in. The menu key acts as an ok button once you are in a menu.h. Use the navigation keys around the menu key to move around in various ways depending on which BookSense program you are using.i. The number keys also have various functions depending on the application program you are in.j. The cancel button is to the left of the 0 and the ok button is to the right of the 0.k. To check the battery status, hold the ok button for more than 2 seconds. Of course, this function would not work in help mode.

BookSenseLesson 2: Radio

Preparation:

1. Ensure the BookSense is adequately charged.2. GWMicro is the company that makes the BookSense.

Goal: To learn to use the radio available on the BookSense.

Procedures:

1. Turn the BookSense on. The on-off button is on the right side panel of the BookSense.2. Press the Program Key until you get to the radio. The Program Key is the top-most button on the left side panel of the BookSense.3. The radio works with earbuds. The earbuds act as an antenna. You will probably hear nothing because there are no presets.4. The keys have different functions when in the radio. Press left or right arrow to adjust the frequency and find a channel. Do this now.5. When you find a channel you like, add it to the presets. To do this, press the Menu Key. This is the square key in the middle of the arrow keys.6. When you are in the radio menu, you can go to the internal speaker setting, channel recording settings, presets, channel scanning sensitivity settings, advanced menu, help mode, and global options.7. Arrow down to presets. Press right arrow to open the presets.8. You have two choices. You can register the preset or delete the preset. To add (register) the preset, press right arrow to begin the registration process.9. Now you may use left or right arrow to cycle among the six presets. If there is no preset associated with the preset number, the BookSense will tell you it is empty.10. To register the currently playing station to a preset, press OK.11. Set two or three presets for practice. You can always delete them later.12. You can use the radio with earbuds and listen through the earbuds.13. With the earbuds plugged into the BookSense, you can change the setting to hear the BookSense from the external speaker. You will still need the earbuds plugged in.14. To change to the external speaker, while the radio is playing, press the Menu Key. Use Up or Down arrow to switch to Internal Speaker Dialog.

15. Press Right Arrow to open the dialog box.16. Use Left or Right arrow to switch between Disable and Enable. Toggle to enable to turn the external speaker on.17. Press the Menu Key to save the setting and return to listening to the radio.18. Explore the radio as time allows.

BookSenseLesson 3: Download Daisy Books from Bookshare

Preparation:

1. You will need a Bookshare account for your student.2. Computer and internet access is needed.

Goal: To obtain a daisy book from Bookshare for the BookSense.

Procedures:

1. Plug the BookSense into the computer using the USB cable.2. Turn the BookSense on. The on-off button is on the right side panel of the unit at the top. Hold the button in for at least two seconds until you hear the BookSense tone on.3. Log into Bookshare.4. Locate a book you want to download.5. Save the daisy format book to your PC or put the book directly on the BookSense.6. To find the BookSense, go to My Computer.7. Save to the BookSense, Daisy folder, then the Bookshare folder.8. Close out of Bookshare or minimize the page when you finish finding and saving books.9. Locate the book you saved from Bookshare.10. Right click on the book or use the context menu key to open the context menu of the book that you want to unzip. 11. Arrow to or click on "extract all".12. You'll need to enter your Bookshare password when asked to do so.13. Place the extracted files in the Bookshare folder. Use copy and paste to move the files if you would like.14. To listen to the book, unplug the BookSense from the computer.15. Turn the BookSense on if you have turned it off.16. The key on the left side panel of the unit (the top-most key) is the Program Key. Press this key until you hear "daisy".17. You should then hear "Bookshare, one of three".18. When focused on Bookshare, press the right arrow key.19. Then use up or down arrow to cycle among the book choices, unless you only have one book on the BookSense.20. To open the book, press the OK button.

21. "Loading" will be the message. The book will start playing.22. To pause, press the on-off button.23. Use up or down arrow to change the reading level. Choose between movable modes such as phrase, paragraph, home or end, time, level 1, and page.24. To read back and forward by your set item, use left or right arrow.25. The on-off switch will act as play and pause for continuous reading.26. When the book is paused, press the menu key for more than two seconds to go into help mode.27. Press the BookSense buttons to see what each does while in the Daisy reading program mode.28. Press and hold the menu key to exit help.29. Explore using the Daisy program as time allows.30. The next time you go into the Daisy program, your previous location will be remembered. Press the Cancel Key to exit the book.31. BookSenseLesson 4: Daisy Book Settings

Preparation:

Load one or more books onto the BookSense from Bookshare.

Goal: To adust settings when using the daisy player.

Procedures:

1. As you learned in the previous lesson, BookSense keys have special functions when reading a Daisy book. Review and try out the commands listed in this lesson.2. You can set marks when reading a book.a. Key 1 will insert a mark at the current location.b. You will be asked to give the mark a number name. Then press the OK button to save the mark.c. There can be up to 20 marks.d. Phone pad key 2 will allow you to go to a specified mark.e. Enter the mark number you want to go to and press the OK button to move to the mark.f. The 3 key will allow you to delete a mark.3. Key 4 will decrease the playing speed.4. Key 5 will go back to normal speed. If you press 5 for more than two seconds, you can switch between a male and female voice.5. To increase the playing speed by level 1, press key 6.6. To go to a specific page, use number 7.7. To go to a heading, press 8.8. Key 9 will switch time moving units.9. Press 8 to announce the summary of current playing content. If you press this for more than two seconds, all the information will be announced.10. Cancel will cancel the current function.11. Use OK to select the current content. Hold OK for more than two seconds to check the battery status.12. When in a Daisy book, press the menu key to adjust settings.13. After pressing the Menu key, use up or down arrow. Besides changing settings in the advanced menu and in the global options, you can go to help mode. Press OK to go into help mode from within the menu. To exit help mode, hold the menu key for more than two seconds.17. To cancel what you are currently doing, press the cancel key. Press OK to select an option.18. In the global menu, you can change a variety of settings. For example, you can change the voice settings. Press the menu key from within a daisy book.19. Down arrow to global options and press the right arrow key to open the pull-down menu.20. Down arrow to voice settings.21. Press right arrow to open the voice settings dialog box.22. Use up or down arrow to navigate through the dialog box.23. For practice, locate the voice rate.24. To change the rate, use left or right arrow. Left arrow will make the rate slower. Right arrow will make the rate faster.25. In the voice settings, you can change the rate, pitch, female or male voice, and the voice volume.26. Practice making changes as time allows.27. To cancel changing settings, press cancel.28. Press OK to exit the menu and save the changes.29. Read or practice changing settings as time allows.30. Turn the BookSense off and lock it when you finish.

BookSenseLesson 5: The Document Reader

Preparation:

1. Talk with your student about what documents would be useful to have on the BookSense that are currently on a computer.

Goal: To efficiently use the BookSense document reader.

Procedures:

1. Place a document, such as a Microsoft Word document, in the Documents folder on the BookSense. We have not explored using the removable disk yet, so stick with putting items on the BookSense.2. You may place the following document types in the Documents folder:txt, rtf, doc, docx, html, xml, brl, and brf. You may put Braille books from Bookshare in this area.3. Toggle to “document reader” on the BookSense.You will here the name of the documents in the list by using up or down arrow.4. Press play-pause (on-off) to open the document and begin reading.5. Press play-pause to pause reading.6. Use up or down arrow keys to change the reading level. You can change to character, phonetic, word, page, paragraph, line, sentence, and word.7. After choosing the level you want to read by, use left arrow to read back by that level or right arrow to read forward by the given level.Explore using different levels for reading to learn what each does.8. You can search for a word in a document. Press the up or down arrow to change the mode to read by word.9. Then use right or left arrow to find the word you would like to search for.10. Now use up or down arrow to focus on search word.11. Now when you press right arrow, you will go to the next instance that the word occurs. Left arrow will move to the previous instance that the word occurs in the document you are in.12. When you finish searching by word, use the up or down arrow to change the reading unit that you want to move by.13. Explore reading a variety of documents. 14. BookSenseLesson 6: Music

Preparation:

1. Hook the BookSense to the computer.2. Place music files in the music folder of the BookSense.3. Various songs may be placed in separate folders within the music folder.4. File types you can put in the music player include MP3, WAV, WMA, FLAC, OGG, MPBLED, and M4A.

Goal: To learn to use the music player on the BookSense.

Procedures:

1. Turn the BookSense on.2. Press the Program key until you hear "media" as the focused application.3. Use up or down arrow to hear the folders of audio books, music, podcasts, radio, and record.4. Arrow to the music folder.5. Press right arrow to open the folder.6. If you have placed folders within the music folder, up or down arrow to the folder you want to open.7. Press right arrow to open the folder.8. Use up or down arrow to locate a song that you want to play.9. Press play-pause (on-off key) to begin playing the song. Press play-pause again to pause the song.10. When the song is paused, press the Menu key.11. Menu options are equalizer setting, playback settings, select playlist, save playlist, adved menu, help mode, and global options.12. Focus on the "help mode" and press right arrow to open the help mode.13. Press various keys to hear what their functions are in the current application that you are in.14. Below is a list of keys and their functions.

a. Up or down arrow will switch moving modes while in the media player. Moving modes are track, five tracks, first or last track, and time.b. The Menu key will call the media menu. When the menu is open, the menu key acts as an okay button. Holding menu for more than two seconds will exit help mode.

Preparation:

1. Know the time and date.

Goal: To set and check the time and date.

Procedures:

1. Before using the time and date button, the time and date should be correct.2. Turn the BookSense on. From any application, press the Menu key.3. Use up or down arrow to find the Global settings.4. Right arrow will open the global pull-down menu.5. Use up or down arrow to find the time and date pull-down menu.6. Right arrow will open the pull-down menu.7. Use the up or down arrow to hear the choices of check time and date and set time and date. 8. Right arrow will open the set time and date dialog. 9. Enter to digits for the month. Use the numbers of the number keypad. Press down arrow to go to the next date and time setting choice.10. Enter two digits for the day. Press down arrow to continue.11. Enter 4 digits for the year. Press down arrow to continue.12. Set the time format. The choices are 12-hour mode or 24-hour mode. Use left or right arrow to choose the mode you want. Press down arrow to continue.13. Next enter two digits for the hour. Use down arrow to continue.14. Enter two digits for the minute. Down arrow to continue.15. Select a.m. or p.m.. BookSenseLesson 8: Alarm

Preparation:

1. Ensure that the BookSense is charged.2. Check to make sure the time and date is set correctly.

Goal: To use the alarm feature on the BookSense.

Procedures:

1. Turn the BookSense on.2. Press the Date and Time button to ensure the time and date are correct. Adjust the date and time if necessary.3. Press the Menu button.4. Use up or down arrow to find the Global Options.5. Right arrow will open the Global Options menu.6. Use up or down arrow to locate the Alarm Settings.7. To open the Alarm Settings, press right arrow.8. When the BookSense says “set alarm dialog” press right arrow.9. Up or down arrow will navigate through the dialot box.10. “Enter two digits for the hour” is the cue. Enter the hour when you want the alarm to sound. Use down arrow to continue.11. Next enter two digits for the minutes. Press down arrow to continue.12. Use left or right arrow to select a.m. or p.m. Down arrow to move to the next setting choice.13. Select the alarm bell by using right or left arrow. Down arrow to the next choice.14. Next choose how often you want this alarm to be used. Use left or right arrow to choose between once, Monday through Friday, Monday through Saturday, weekend, or every day. Use down arrow to continue.15. Next choose the duration of the alarm. You can have the alarm sound for five minutes, six minutes, seven minutes, etc. Left or right arrow will toggle among the choices.16. To set the alarm, press the Menu button.17. When there is an alarm set, choices in the Alarm Settings include check alarm time, set alarm, and delete alarm. Press the okay button or right arrow to select one of these choices. The menu button will also act as the okay button while in the menu choices.18. When the alarm goes off, press the okay button or the cancel button to shut it off. 19. Talk with your student about when the alarm feature would be useful.20. As time allows, practice setting, checking, and deleting alarms.

Preparation:

1. The Media player supports MP3, MP4, OGG, WAV, WMV, FLAC, WMA, and ASF file formats.2. Audible audio, including Format 4 and Enhanced Audio (.aa, .aax) are supported.3.. Explore and locate files that you or your student would be interested in putting on the BookSense.

Goal: To efficiently use the media program on the BookSense.

Procedures:

1. Attach the BookSense to the computer with the USB cable. Place audio files in the appropriate media folders. Folders available are the audio books folder, music folder, podcasts folder, radio folder, and the record folder.

Example of putting an audio file onto the BookSense from the computer:a. Go to http://accessibleworld.org/ for this example.b. At the time this lesson was written, there was a podcast on the page about the NLS reader. After the short description, a download link is provided.c. When the download link is open, a dialog box appears. Move to and press enter (or click) on the save button.d. Place the file in the Media folder and then within the Podcasts folder.e. Disconnect the BookSense from the computer.

2. Locate the application program you need. Press the program button until the BookSense says “Media”.3. Use up or down arrow tolocate the folder that your audio file(s) are stored in. If you put a file in the podcast folder, arrow to that folder.4. Right arrow will open the folder. 5. Use up or down arrow to locate the file you want to listen to.6. Press the okay button or the play/pause button to begin reading. Press play/pause to pause reading.7. When listening to an audio file, you can use up or down arrow to change moving modes. Track, first or last track five tracks, and time., 8. Left or right arrow will move by the moving mode that you select.9. Use key 1 to insert a mark. Marks can be up to 1,000. In the file list, you can go to the fifth previous item.10. The 2 key will go to the set mark. 11. Hold the menu key for more than 2 seconds. Explore what each key will do when in the media program. Press the menu key for more than two seconds to exit help mode.12. To exit what you are listening to, press cancel.13. Left arrow can be used to go back by level.

14. Listen to items and explore various functions of the media application as time. Allows.

BookSenseLesson 10: Recording

Preparation:

You can use the BookSense to record your voice, to record lectures, etc. The length of time you record depends on the memory you have available on the BookSense or the SD card if you are using one (xt only). File types that you can record in are mp3 or wav. You may not record if you are using the radio.

Goal: To use the internal microphone to record using the BookSense.

Procedures:

1. The record button is just below the play/pause button. To begin recording, hold the record button for at least two seconds. You will hear, “start recording” and the BookSense will start recording.t. To pause recording, press the record button. When you hear BookSense say pause you will know recording has been paused.3. To start recording after you have paused, press the record button again.4. When you finish recording, press the play/pause button. “Stop play recording?” is the cue. To play the recording, press the okay button on yes. If you don’t want to play the recording, use left arrow or right arrow to focus on “no” and then press the okay button. If you want to stop recording instead of pausing, press the play/pause button.5. To listen to your recording, press the program key until BookSense announces that you are in the media application.6. Use down arrow to get to the Record Folder. Press right arrow to open the folder.7. Recordings will be stored by the time and date that they were recorded.8. To delete a recorded file, hold the 8 key while focused on it. When asked if you want to delete the file, press the okay button on “yes” if you really want to erase the file.9. To change recording settings, press the menu key while in the media program. Use up arrow or down arrow to find the global settings.10. Press right arrow to open the global options.11. Use up or down arrow to focus on recording settings. Use right arrow to open the recording settings.12. In the recording settings, you can make changes. Use right arrow or left arrow to make selections. Press the okay button to save the settings.

13. Press cancel while recording to cancel recording.

14. You can use an external microphone to record. If you want to record from a CD player or other device, use the line-in setting. See the manual for details if you want to use the BookSEnse in this manner.15. While recording, you can place a mark in the file. This can help you find an important location at a later time.16. Press key 1 when you want to add a mark. A mark will be added. You will not hear a message from the BookSense.17. Up to 1,000 marks can be added.18. To move to a mark, press the 2 key while the recording is playing or the recording is stopped. Enter the number of the mark to move to. Press the okay button after entering the number of the mark. You will be jumped to that mark, and the recording will start playing.19. You can delete a mark. Press the 3 key while the recording is playing or while the recording is paused. Enter the mark number that you want to delete. Press the okay key to delete the mark.20. Record and explore the record option as time allows.
