Friday 10th May 2019 Term 2 Issue 6 ANZAC DAY On the 25 April, Girls Academy staff were among thousands of others who attended our local ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Robertson Park to commemorate all Australians and New Zealanders who have served their country. The cool autumn morning was the perfect backdrop to the opening hymns of a didgeridoo in honor of the Indigenous men and women who have also served, or are on active service. This was followed by beautiful renditions of both the Australian and New Zealand national anthems in front of the cenotaph which was lit up in the dark. This was a very moving experience. Once the Dawn Service formalities were finished, the doors of the Country Women’s Association building were opened, and the public were welcomed in for a light breakfast. For the second year now Girls Academy staff and students assisted the CWA ladies in providing tea, coffee, porridge and raisin toast to the many patrons who had come in from the cold. Although an early start, it was a great morning on such an important day for the whole community to remember those who fought and continue fighting for our country. Vice captain, Justin Alexander, laid a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of local member, Philip Donato.

ANZAC DAY On the 25 April, Girls Academy staff were among thousands of others who attended our local

ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Robertson Park to commemorate all Australians and New

Zealanders who have served their country.

The cool autumn morning was the perfect backdrop to the opening hymns of a didgeridoo in

honor of the Indigenous men and women who have also served, or are on active service. This

was followed by beautiful renditions of both the Australian and New Zealand national anthems in

front of the cenotaph which was lit up in the dark. This was a very moving experience.

Once the Dawn Service formalities were finished, the doors of the Country Women’s Association

building were opened, and the public were welcomed in for a light breakfast. For the second

year now Girls Academy staff and students assisted the CWA ladies in providing tea, coffee,

porridge and raisin toast to the many patrons who had come in from the cold.

Although an early start, it was a great morning on such an important day for the whole

community to remember those who fought and continue fighting for our country.

Vice captain, Justin

Alexander, laid a wreath at

the cenotaph on behalf of

local member, Philip

Donato.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Term 2 is a very busy time in every school and Canobolas Rural Technology High School is

no different. There are a range of activities, opportunities and special events that happen

this term. Please ensure that you get the notes and information so that your student does

not miss out.

As we begin term 2 we have had a number of staff changes. Ms Pankhurst

is continuing in the role of Head Teacher TAS; Mr Conliffe was successful via

interview in the last week of term and has taken up the position of Careers

Adviser at Canowindra High School; Mr Morris has left us for an opportunity

in another school; Mrs Boardman was successful, for a part time, STEM

Industry Schools Partnership position and we welcome Ms Donoghue as our

Attendance Officer. The vacant Year 12 advisor position has been filled by

Miss Duncan(pictured).

During the recent school break the school has been a busy place with preparations

continuing for the installation of solar panels, the installation of water bottle filling stations

around the school, painting to assist vision impaired staff and students and the final touches

made to the revised 5 period day timetable. I was also pleased to host a Canobolas

Engagement Plus Program (CEPP) forum with representatives from local Police, the

Department and the school executive, teaching staff and special programs in attendance.

You will hear more about this program as the idea is refined and developed.

As the temperature drops and the term progresses it is important that students are dressed

appropriately. Illness and days away from school impact the learning opportunities for all

students. Students are encouraged to keep warm and dress accordingly with healthy food

choices and sleep also playing a crucial role. We do not want your student to miss essential

learning opportunities nor catch a cold that might have been avoided.

Examinations and assessments are a necessary part of the curriculum assessment and

feedback process. They provide information to students, staff and parents on the progress

of students in their learning. Years 12, 7 and 9 will participate in significant examination

events and all years will have assessment tasks due this term. Students are reminded that

they should take advantage of study and revision times to ensure that they are prepared

and I remind all students that the Thursday afternoon homework centre is available for extra

support. If you need information please contact the front office for times and location.

Finally, I would like to thank the staff for their commitment to your students and the school

during term 1. Without our professional and dedicated teachers your student would not be

able to access the range of programs and experiences that support the curriculum.

Scott Paterson, Principal

GIRLS ACADEMY VS CLONTARF GAMES A competition kicking off the rivalry between Girls Academy and Clontarf commenced in Week

2, Term 2. 10 students will compete against each other every Monday afternoon in a range of

sports throughout the term.

Both academies have sign-up sheets on which students can put down their names to participate

each week, students have to be quite fast as the spots fill very quickly.

Putt Putt was the game selected for this week’s play off. Pairs or groups made their way through

the eighteen-hole course with a lot of laughter and fun with the winners being Clontarf with a

score of 618 beating Girls Academy 494. Touch footy will be the game to win next week.

Points will be tallied up after each game and combined for an overall Academy winner at the

end of term with the final game being held during a lunch break to enable fellow peers and staff

to come along and cheer.

AGRICULTURE NEWS

Students preparing the garden beds for the winter vegetable crop

Year 7 & 8 Agrifood students will be focusing on the connection between the food we produce

at the Farm, and what we cook and eat in the school kitchens. Our new recipes have been

designed around the fruit, vegetables and meat we produce at school. Some of our braver

students have already sampled one of the meat chickens we raised last term when making their

Chicken Herb and Mayo Wraps this week. They will be treated to roast chicken and gravy rolls at

the end of the term when the weather is colder.

Year 10 have each been allocated a ewe to monitor and care for. They will record data on their

animal throughout this term and next, in anticipation of lambing in Term 4. The students have

learnt how to capture and restrain the sheep as part of their practical assessment, and will now

each be responsible for caring for a mother and their lambs.

A big THANK YOU to

our friends at

Canowindra High

School who have

provided us with a

ram to sire our new

lambs.

WELCOME RAMBO!

We are very excited to announce the

new 7 & 8 AGRIFOOD curriculum which

has been introduced at Canobolas this

term, with a focus on PADDOCK TO

PLATE.

Canobolas Cares

Relay for Life 2019

As the school started preparing for holidays at the end of Term 1, 40 students and staff

were preparing for a long 24hrs of community action at the 2019 Orange and District

Relay for Life.

The team assembled at Waratah Sporting Complex early on Saturday 6th April. Following

the Opening Ceremony all teams lined the track to support cancer survivors and their

carers as they completed the initial lap of the relay. This also offered the opportunity to

remember our own staff and family who have battled with the disease and reinforced the

reason for our contribution.

The 24 hours which followed exhibited fantastic teamwork, encouragement, motivation,

persistence and overwhelming participation in everything that was offered throughout

the event.

Our mighty school vice-captain ditched his regular appearance and took on the persona

of Justine Alexander, wearing a beautiful sequined dress, glorious wig, heels and

extravagant make-up for the Miss Relay competition. Justin learnt a little about the

benefits of sunscreen over the course of the event.

Page 6: Term 2 Issue 6 Friday 10th May 2019 ANZAC DAY€¦ · Term 2 Issue 6 Friday 10th May 2019 ANZAC DAY On the 25 April, Girls Academy staff were among thousands of others who attended

In the three weeks leading up to the relay, Mark Selmes and

Ethan Taylor worked throughout their recess and lunch breaks

to create the Nobbies Box Car, ready to compete in the box

car rally. Complete with operating lights, horse power under

the bonnet and Nobbies number plates, they were hard to

beat in the car aesthetics competition. However when it came

to motor efficiency in the race they were effectively running a

three legged race. No challenge for our very own Jessica

Healey who was thrown into a sponsors box car and sprinted

the entire 400m track to take line honours for the event.

A large number of students braved stylish new haircuts,

donating their glorious locks to make wigs for cancer patients.

Others electing to trim what little they had to create less then

spectacular mullets… all in support of the Cancer Council.

The Girls Academy were well represented to lead the “Close

the Gap Lap” late in the afternoon which followed the Clontarf

Academy exhibiting some exceptional examples of traditional

dance.

All students enthusiastically and competitively engaged in a

range of activities from colour runs and pole dancing to

gladiator and zorb ball challenges. As day turned into night,

students supported all campsites by buying a range of meals

and a good stash of lollies to keep them going into the early

hours of the morning.

By 10pm, as muscles began to cramp and lap numbers

reached into the 60s and 70s, Austen Logan from the Clontarf

Academy took to the stage, performing dulcet tones for all

relayers, keeping everyone motivated and pushing forward a

little longer.

As the night continued and dew started settling, students and

staff tried to catch a few minutes sleep between walking laps,

a little soccer or watching a movie on the big screen. Some

were more successful than others at sleeping but as delirium set

in from lack of sleep, those who pushed through had a comical

evening.

As the sun began to rise on Sunday morning, students enjoyed

a selection of breakfast items and tried to stretch out tired

muscles and bones before parents started arriving with their

pets to complete a few laps before packing up the campsites

and completing the final lap of the relay and closing

ceremony.

As a school we cannot be more proud of the

overall commitment, behaviour and awareness

of the community that the whole Canobolas

team displayed. Mrs Rose, Miss Lloyd and Miss

Penberthy were extremely grateful for the

backup they received from Mr Tucknott, Mr

Paterson, Ms Rodwell, Mr Boardman, Mrs

Boardman and Miss Lee in the deep hours of the

night.

As a team we had incredible support from our

community with people digging deep to support the cause. A special thankyou to Woodward

Street Quality Meats, Darren and Penny Tindall of PWM Advice + Insurance + Lending who not

only provided delicious slow cooked meat for the relayers but stayed all day to continue

cooking and serving the team to keep them going.
