It has been amazing to see how independent the children have become as the year progresses. The children are confidently following the class routines and exploring the exciting activities the educators have been planning this term. This term the yellow, purple and green groups enjoyed live musical theatre with the Jack and Molly show. The children had the opportunity to learn about growing a garden and took part in interactive songs and drama to support their understanding of concepts about sustainability, numeracy, rhythm and music. The red, orange, blue and aqua group had a wonderful pottery experience. The children had the opportunity to explore clay with Lizz Poklar, a Melbourne based potter. The children had the rare opportunity to work one-on-one with Lizz, creating their own pot on the pottery wheel. Each child was guided through this extraordinary process, making choices about shape and texture so that each piece was unique. It was tactile, fascinating and most of all, fun! Next term we hope to plan an excursion for each four year old group. We would also like to explore the local community more, so if you have any ideas or suggestions for places the children could visit or local community members who can visit our service, please speak to the educators in your room or contact me. The educators at Home Road Kindergarten recently participated in a professional development day with a focus on revising the philosophy and reflecting on how we document children’s learning. The educators had the opportunity to reflect on theories and ideas that influence their teaching styles. In the next few months we will be working to finalise our kindergarten philosophy and look forward to hearing contributions from the children and families about what you value about Home Road Kindergarten. Have a safe and happy term 2 break. We have also learnt about important life lessons such as; what to do in case of a fire, what to do in a medical emergency and the concept of ‘Stranger Danger’. The children also loved learning and practicing CPR! Nature and Discovery: We have loved Autumn and the changes within the environment! This has given us the opportunity to discuss ‘things that grow’. The children planted grass seeds, broad beans and sunflower seeds and have been closely observing the changes! TERM 2 NEWSLETTER 2015 RED GROUP

What a busy term, term two has been!!! The children transitioned smoothly back into the kinder routine and have established some great

relationships with their peers and educators. This term we have focused largely on building upon the children’s prosocial skills and development, striving to create a happy, healthy and safe learning environment. During

large and small group times, the children have actively

participated in discussions about friendship, getting along with others, sharing and identifying and expressing their feelings.

We have introduced social stories and a feelings detective program with all of the children, supporting their development of

prosocial behaviour.

Art has been an important part of our program, with the children

experimenting with a variety of art materials, expressing their ideas and feelings, improving their coordination, developing small muscle skills, learning to recognise colours and texture and developing creativity and pride in their accomplishments. Next term the children have expressed their interest in creating a 3D minion, we would love it if parents could

start collecting newspapers for us to use for this exciting project!

The disco night was definitely a highlight this term and it was fantastic to

see so many Red Group children dressed up in their inspired space

costumes. The children worked hard on creating decorations for

the event and continue to discuss about how much fun they had within the program. The children also loved creating their own unique pottery creations with Liz,

we can’t wait to see how they turned out. Another special event that the children enjoyed this term was the Mother’s/Special

Person morning tea. A big thank you to all of those special loved ones that attended. We know the children loved having you there.

Coming up within the program: On Wednesday 24 June we have our pyjama day breakfast,

where the children come to kinder dressed in their pyjamas. Next term we plan on organising an excursion to the Collingwood Children’s Farm – more details to follow!

Have a lovely holiday break and we will see you all next term! Miss Sarah, Miss Amelia and Miss Sandra

BLUE GROUPTerm 2 is quickly coming to an end and what a busy term it has been.

Coming back from the Easter break we discussed what we did over the holidays and the topic of camping and fishing came up. The idea of setting up a camp site and a fire was briefly explored in the last weeks

of Term 1, so we continued this interest by setting up a campsite within the room with a fire and fishing rods. The children enjoyed the role playing of catching the fish and then cooking it in a pot over the fire.

This area led to lots of communication between the children as they waited for their turn for the fishing rods and negotiated how their imaginative play would unfold.

This term we have also seen a real interest in counting. This initially began as during the morning

group time I would count how many friends we had for the day and the group would join in. To follow on we explored the concept of tallying. We tallied the

different number of family members Blue group had, the different types of pets and our favourite football teams. We have since been discussing

measurement incidentally during their play, measuring the length of mobilo and height of block constructions. We have also looked at our individual

height and marked ourselves against a tape measure on the wall to see the range of heights in our group.

During Term 1 we

discussed information about our families, who is in our family, our cultural heritage

and what were our family’s favourite activities and foods. This term we have

been focussing more on the individual. We discussed the subtle differences in our

appearance compared to our peers and further explored their idea of

themselves through self-portraits. The children were encouraged to look at their reflection and to examine the characteristics of their faces and then express this on paper. It was lovely to hear the discussions

the children were having with each other as they worked and giggled at their representations of themselves. Following on from this we have recently been tracing our bodies and recording what they feel best

describes them.

Blue group celebrated Mother’s

Day by hosting a morning tea. In our Friday session we made scones for our mothers and then

invited them back a little early to enjoy some fresh scones with jam and a play with our Mums at

kinder. It was lovely to see so many Mums come along and enjoy spending time with their

children at kinder.

This Term Blue group have taken up the Premier’s Reading challenge.

The challenge is to read 40 books from the approved booklist by September. When explaining the challenge to the group they were very excited and declared that it would be easy! So far we seem to be on

track to reach our goal and maybe even exceed it. We have been reading at least one story each session which is then followed by a group discussion regarding the story and the different aspects, events

and themes that the story is trying to convey. One particular story, ‘The Potato People’ by Pamela Allen inspired the group to create their own potato people, so the children brought in a potato and used recycled

materials to create their people. We plan to plant the potatoes once they start sprouting.

This term we also introduced yoga as part of our morning routine. The

group goes through roughly 10 different yoga poses of varying difficulty and they try to hold that position for five seconds before we move on. We end our yoga session by having one minute of quietness, to practice

deep mindful breathing and to become more aware of our surroundings. We feel it is important for the children to become aware of the importance of daily exercise and that there are many

different forms of exercise that they can do to keep their bodies fit and healthy.

We recently were able to offer a wonderful pottery incursion for the group. Each child was able to create a pot or volcano in some cases out of clay using a

pottery wheel. The facial expressions and giggles of the children as they first touched the spinning wet clay was magical. It was wonderful to see the concentration that they displayed while they were being guided by Liz, the pottery

instructor. The sense of achievement at the end was enormous and they were very proud of themselves when they had finished creating their pot. We are eagerly awaiting for the pots to return from the kiln.

TERM 2 NEWSLETTER 2015 AQUA GROUP

The Aqua group children have been very busy this term. Our program has reflected their interests and we have expanded on their learning in these areas. The children have been interested in observing the seasonal changes in our garden. They have been collecting leaves and made a group collage of an autumn tree. We have included puzzles/stories and discussion about the seasons. As a follow on from this interest and having found worms and small creatures in the garden, the children were interested in insects and worms. Dianne set up a worm farm for the children to observe worm activity in the soil as well as bringing in her stick insects which the children have enjoyed holding, observing and learning about their lifestyles. The children have drawn and painted the characters out of The Very Hungry Caterpillar story with some amazing results.

We have all planted broad bean seeds into a cup so as to allow the children to witness the root formation of a plant. We have had many discussions on this as well as stories/puzzles to enhance the learning experience. Aqua group have also planted

grass and sunflower seeds onto a tray and on a calendar, been noting how long these take to germinate. We are also highlighting sustainability practices with the children. We have encouraged sensory play amongst the children including slime/volume, finger painting (learning that when colours are mixed, they form new colours) and goop which is lots of fun! The children are also being encouraged in their gross motor play. It has been well documented that if children are well co-ordinated,

they are ready and able to progress through their learning stages in their cognitive abilities. The children have practiced their somersaulting skills on the gym mats, flipping over the bar pole, balancing activities, skipping with the teacher turning the rope and

various ball games. The children have also enjoyed carpentry. Aqua group have been role playing firepersons/police persons in the block area. They have also been interpreting “at the supermarket” in home corner. This activity will generate into a restaurant play area. The children have also shown a great interest in the human body. An interest area was set up with various animal bones/books/x-ray photographs to highlight this activity and to extend upon the children’s interests in this area.

To further encourage fine motor skills (required for reading/writing later at school) we have introduced puzzles on the mat at the start of the session on Wednesdays. The children are all

beginning to show an interest in writing their names. We had a group activity on name tracing and an alphabet sheet placed on the drawing table for them to copy the letters. Some children are also interested in making their own books. Enjoy the holiday break and we look forward to a great Term 3! Mrs James and Mrs Dianne

YELLOW GROUPThis Term in Yellow Group, we have been focusing on social skills and allowing for the children to further develop their self-confidence. They have taken on new experiences and challenges head on and it has been wonderful to watch them grow as a group!

Jack and Molly Incursion: We were very lucky to have Jack and Molly come into our session and share their fantastic ‘Backyard Garden’ incursion with us. The children loved dancing, singing and engaging in dramatic play!

The incursion was an absolute hit and was enjoyed by all. Adventures of Ted: This Term we started our ‘show and tell’ experience, ‘Adventures of Ted’. The children have been taking Ted home and engaging in their day to day activities with him. They have then shared this with their peers by telling stories, answering questions and discussing their

photos! Each week the children look forward to hearing about Ted and are excited for their own adventures with him.

Pirates, Pirates: Pirates have been a major focus in Yellow Group as we have used this interest to further a range of different areas of learning.

The children have engaged in a group treasure hunt, making treasure play dough, pirate role playing and various pirate songs and games. Mother’s Day: Thank you to all of the special ladies of Yellow Group who joined us for our lovely Mother’s Day morning tea! The children were very proud of the effort they put into their gifts and the video and absolutely loved having their special people spend time with them in their classroom! Lastly, we would like to wish all the families of Yellow Group a relaxing and well deserved break! We look forward to seeing you in Term 3! Miss Alyce, Ms Melanie and Ms Mary

TERM 2 NEWSLETTER 2015 GREEN GROUP

What a busy term it has been, with only two weeks left! The children have welcomed Miss Krissy with open arms and it is

great to see them connect with their peers and educators. A big thank you to our lovely families for your continued support and understanding through this transition

This term has been jam packed with lots of different experiences and even a fun incursion. The children thoroughly enjoyed the interactive Jack and Molly “Green My Garden Grows” incursion learning all about sustainable practices through music, movement and drama. We then carried on learning about sustainable practices with planting experiences, learning all about recycling, healthy eating, participating in World Environment day and even conducting a nude food session. The children have begun to develop some lovely friendships and are enjoying each other’s company highlighting real progress in their social interactions. The children’s confidence

is soaring and we are observing lots of imaginative and creative play. We have focused heavily this term continuing to develop the children’s sharing, negotiating and communication skills. Learning about pro social behaviours through group discussions, modelling and scaffolding the use of “our hands are for playing not hurting or hitting” and providing opportunities for the children to become more socially aware of their impact on others. We have also introduced a visual volume gauge which is used throughout the sessions, helping the children and educators create an inclusive hearing environment. With only two weeks of term two left we’ve still got lots of fun coming up within the program, including our Pyjama Day Breakfast on Tuesday 23 June and some more cooking experiences. Over the holiday break, we would like families to start collecting washed 2L milk bottles for us if possible. We have an exciting project coming up within the program. Have a lovely and safe holiday break and we look forward to Term Three. Miss Sarah and Miss Krissy

PURPLE GROUPDuring this term the children have really settled into the kinder experience and our routines. We have been having lots of fun exploring the outdoor space and extending our gross motor skills through stilt walking, experiencing cause and effect with real hammers and nails, developing our social skills in the sandpit by negotiating and communicating our thoughts and ideas. Inside we’ve been singing lots of songs, songs that were established during term one and have

become favourites, as well as learning new songs. We’ve also been learning some new group time games, aimed at working together, investigation and awareness of the group. We’ve also been

developing our fine motor skills at the drawing table by mark making with textas and pencils and practicing using scissors. Purple group is very creative and love using loose materials to create at the pasting table and sensory exploration at the art easel.

We were very lucky this term to have an incursion with Jack and Molly. They present an interactive show full of adventure presented through live music, songs and costumes. Purple group was completely engaged

and enjoyed joining in with the new songs and movements. This term we also were able to celebrate Mother’s Day. We invited our Mums to come to kinder to share some time with their children and experience what a kinder day is all about. It was lovely to see so many Mums come along and spend that special time with their children. It is so important, especially in three year old kinder, for families to support their children at kinder and though it may seem like a small thing, but the simple act of spending time with your child at kinder really enforces for them that kinder is a safe place where they are valued. We hope you enjoy the holiday break and look forward to Term 3! Miss Nicole & Mrs Grace

TERM 2 NEWSLETTER 2015 CENTRE INFORMATION

Staff News: Another fun filled term at HRK has flown past and we have a few important acknowledgements to applaud. Miss Alyce celebrated her graduation as an Early Childhood/Primary Educator, Mrs Dianne completed her Diploma of Early Childhood and Mrs Grace is about to celebrate an amazing 20 years at HRK (more on this to come!). We always encourage our educators to partake in further development with Miss Melanie and Miss Krissy studying their Diplomas, Mrs Dianne now beginning her Bachelor and Miss Sarah, Mrs Sandra and Liz studying their Masters. The educational team participated in a professional development day last week, in order to grow and learn together as a group. What an enormous asset our educational team are, with a wealth of professional experience behind them. Other exciting news - Mrs James (Helen) has just become a grandmother again and Miss Alyce got engaged, congratulations!

Committee News: Committee has been busy behind the scenes as usual. The biggest news is that 15 hours of 4 year old kindergarten has been funded for the next 2 years. Our 2016 timetable is now available on our “new look” website for your information. Though 15 hours of funding has been confirmed, unfortunately the State Government are yet to announce their funding contribution for next year, which is delaying the educators Award negotiations and hence our budget/fee preparations. We also ran a very informative Parent Information night where Sally Ward from Early Life Foundations provided a greater insight into our play based learning environment and how this enables school readiness (slides available on request).

The front of our kindergarten has had another upgrade with the installation of a disabled parking space, ensuring a more inclusive environment. Please be mindful of the new parking restrictions. Another long term goal is to look at the rejuvenation of the outdoor play space, especially now that we have an active indoor / outdoor program in place. A subcommittee are working in unison with the educational team, a landscape architect, and the kindergarten children to develop some plans. This is a long term investment, which will incorporate some major fundraising. Any community input / skills are warmly invited.

Don't forget, the educators love parent involvement, whether it be through parent duty, or coming in to tell the children all about your job as a nurse, teacher, artist or plumber! Just have a chat to your educators to see how you can participate.

Jo Sutton - President 2015 HRK Committee

3yo 2016: First round offer letters will be sent out in late June (end of Term 2).

Scholastic Books: Thank you to all the parents and carers who have supported the kindergarten through the purchase of books from both the Bookclub brochures and Book Fair this year. The kindergarten earns reward dollars up to the value of 20% from all sales made which are used to purchase additional resources for the kindergarten. So far this year the kindergarten has accrued approximately $350 in reward dollars and Liz has purchased some great new resources. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions about ordering through the Bookclub brochures. Adele Aldridge 0402 447 274

Fundraising & Event Update: HRK 4 year olds launched into space on Friday 1 May after dark for the annual 4yo disco. Fun was had by all and awesome little space people danced the night away. Thanks to all that helped to make the night a success.

Little HRK artists were hard at work and submitted amazing picture plates in Term 2, all have been returned to kinder and look fantastic. Thanks to all families who supported this fundraiser.

"Minions" Kids Movie Event reminder: 10am 20th June @ The Sun Theatre, tickets will be placed in pockets this week. We also have an “adults only” movie night coming up on Monday 13 July for Magic Mike XXL at Sun Theatre, info to come shortly. Save the date!

Finally entertainment books are still available for purchase. Unlike in past years, a book has not been sent home to families, though we are still hoping for more sales to help fundraise as much as possible.

A FEW PHOTOS FROM OUR 4YO DISCO AND TERM 1 WORKING BEE….

This is just a quick reminder that UV levels across Victoria are now below three so sun protection measures are

no longer recommended unless outdoors for extended periods or at the snow. So you can pack away the sunscreen and sun hats until September when UV will be on the rise again. In the cold weather, children will

need warm clothes such as jackets, coats and even a beanie to keep them warm during outdoor play time.

We have included a link to the Asthma Foundation Victoria Term 2 newsletter on our newsletter page. We will aim to provide this information to families each term.
