Congratulations to all students and staff who contributed to an excellent school athletics carnival last week. Despite the looming prospect of cold weather, the actual day turned out to be very pleasant, allowing students to enjoy the carnival and compete in comfort. This year a change will be made to the school calendar to more effectively implement professional learning for staff. We will be moving the Term 3 School Development Day (Monday 22nd July) to Wednesday 18th September. This means two things: students will return on Week 1 of Term 3 on Monday 22nd July rather than the Tuesday. It will also mean that in Term 3, the middle day of Henty Field Days, Wednesday 18th September, will be an official ‘Pupil Free Day’. Students will not attend school on this day. This arrangement will allow students who wish to attend or volunteer at Henty Page 1 Field Days to do so on the Wednesday without accruing a school absence. We will remind parents and students when it gets closer to each date, but please mark both dates on your calendar. In addition, I am required to inform you that we are also rescheduling the Term 4 School Development Day from Friday 20th December to two evenings earlier in the year. This change enables us to meet our mandatory training requirements for CPR and Anaphylaxis. This change will not affect students or parents at all, as the last day of school for students is Wednesday 18th December. Congratulations to Sam Harrison for coming fifth in the state at CHS Lawn Bowls. Congratulations also to Nicholas Newton and Samuel Male who were picked for the CHS Under 15s NSW State AFL team. Albury/Wodonga Youth ForumOn Wednesday last week, during the Athletics Carnival, five Year 10 students represented Billabong at the Albury/Wodonga Youth Forum. More than one hundred students from ten schools across the area attended the forum on Respectful Relationships. Students were addressed in the morning by Melinda Tankard Reist on the harmful messages present in media and popular culture and some ways that they can combat them. After lunch students attended workshops designed to give them an opportunity on the stereotypes of men and women that exist in our society and the possible issues with these. Thank you to the students who represented our school at the forum.

Year 12 English Standard Writing ChallengeOn Friday, 7th June, Year 12 students studying English Standard started preparing for their HSC exams with a twenty-minute writing challenge. During the twenty minutes, students had to write without stopping. Students quickly realised that writing without stopping for twenty minutes, as they’ll need to do in their HSC English exams, wasn’t as easy as it first sounded. Over the coming weeks, students will continue to develop

their ability to write consistently over longer periods of time to prepare for their exams.

10 Geography Research TaskYear 10 Geography students recently investigated the impact of food production on global environments. They presented their findings, along with recommendations for future sustainable production, in a formal research report. Below is a list of some of our most interesting, and sometimes frightening, facts taken from their reports.

“In the last 20 years, over 3.5 million hectares of Indonesian and Malaysian forest have been destroyed to make way for palm oil plantations” Maggie J.

“In the Ivory Coast, 25% of tropical rainforests have been destroyed to make way for cocoa plantations. The yearly rate of deforestation has doubled” Ben M.

“‘Cocoa Life’ is a global sustainability program funded by Mondelez to improve cocoa production. Find their logo on Cadbury chocolate” Alex T.

“Add a bee buffet to your garden to encourage honeybees” Bo M.

“More than 1 million tonnes of tuna is consumed each year. Bycatch results in unintentional catch of species like dolphins and rays” Talen H.

“One of the most detrimental alterations to grassland biomes for farming is the clearing of native trees and grasses. This can cause salinity, erosion and extinction of natives” Blake R.

“Vanilla must be hand pollinated as the bee that once pollinated it, the melipona bee, is now extinct. Because of this, it is the second most expensive spice after saffron” Tamara S.Ms Murdoch & Mr Moss

Sports ReportOn Wednesday the 5th of June we held our annual Athletics Carnival in Albury at the Les O’Brien Precinct.

It was a warm, sunny day, perfect conditions for our carnival. All students participated with enthusiasm and sportsmanship. A special mention goes to Alisha Van Deventer who broke a record which has been held since

1986 in 13 Years Girls Discus. Alisha threw 25.94m and the previous record was 24.5m. Well done Alisha.

The two top places in each event (top four in 100m) qualify for the Zone Carnival which is held at the same venue on Thursday the 27th of June.

Air Force Cadets Upcoming Recruitment Drive

We are a youth development organisation for young people between the ages of 12 and 16years of age who are interested in developing themselves and learning new skills that they take with them into their adult lives.

It is not just an organisation for those young people considering a military career or just interested in flying. There is so much more on offer!

We have had much success in developing the self-confidence, self-esteem, leadership, team spirit, and self-discipline of hundreds of young people of our community over the last 27 years.

The vast majority of our cadets are in the 13-15 year age bracket.

We are now recruiting for our semester 2 intake and will be holding an information session for interested young people and their parents on Sunday, 23 June 2019 commencing at 5pm at our Squadron at the corner of Dalton Place and Avalon Street at the Albury Airport. Our website (http://412sqn.aafc.org.au/) and also the National website (www.aafc.org.au) contains more information as well. If I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me, Danny Salmon OAM on 0448 403 777.

Growing pumpkins is easy and fun, students from the MC classes have harvested a bumper crop of Kent pumpkins this year.
