CALENDAR

When asked “What’s love?” children have some great answers. Noelle, age 7, said,

“Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it every day.” Rebecca, who

is 8, answered, “Since my grandmother got arthritis, she can’t bend over and polish her

toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even after his hands got

arthritis too. That’s love.” Jessica, also 8, concluded, “You really shouldn’t say ‘I love you’

unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.”

Sometimes we need reminding that God loves us. We focus on the difficulties of life and

wonder, Where’s the love? But if we pause and consider all that God has done for us, we

remember how much we are loved by God, who is love (1 John 4:8-10).

Psalm 103 lists the “benefits” God showers on us in love: He forgives our sin (v.3), satisfies

us with good things (v.5), and executes righteousness and justice (v.6). He is slow to anger

and abounds in mercy (v.8). He doesn’t deal with us as our sins deserve (v.10) and has

removed our sin as far as the east is from the west (v.12). He has not forgotten us!

What’s love? God is love, and He’s pouring out that love on you and me.

PRINCIPALS REPORT

Update on Mr Krieg

Ev had his surgery last Wednesday, a 5 hour operation. The good news is that the surgery

was successful, with both the aneurysm removed and the pressure on the brain relieved,

meaning Ev has regained feeling and movement in his left side. Whilst recovery will be

slow from such a significant operation, both Kathryn and Ev are looking forward to his full

return to health in time. Ev and Kathryn would like to thank the St Jakobi community for their

messages of support and the beautiful flowers they received from the Class Carers. Should

you require any assistance in the next few days, please contact the Deputy Principal, Mr

Ian Lange.

Headlice Update

The headlice team is thrilled to let you know that at the last two headlice checks our school

has been headlice free! This is a real achievement, and a testament to the commitment of

parents to regularly check for headlice. Whilst our school community will not be immune to

headlice and could still have cases in the future, we are unlikely to see it at the level of

incidence that was in the school prior to the start of the Headlice Check Programme. A big

thankyou must go to the team of parents who volunteer their time to conduct the check each

term – Diane Dyer, Sibohn Kathy Saunders, Shanti Hassold and Erica Parker. Your time is

appreciated! We would love a few more parents to be on the team – it is a commitment

of one day, once a term. All volunteers are required to have a current police check, sign a

confidentiality agreement and attend a Valuing Safe Communities session. If you would like

to help out, particularly if you have a health or hairdressing background, please speak to

Kathryn or Diane Dyer.

Middle School Update

As parents of our community will be aware from previous Newsletter communications, there

has been significant work carried out by the Lutheran Schools Association (LSA) and the

local Lutheran Schools of the Barossa region over the last 18 months, as we have discussed

the best ways to cater for the students who attend Lutheran Schools both now and into the

future. In particular, there has been ongoing discussions related to the issue of creating a

Middle School at Faith Lutheran College at some point in the future. These discussions have

been positive and show a tremendous strength and desire by all schools to serve their

respective communities.

The most recent part of the consultation process involved a combined meeting of School

Council Representatives and Principals on Monday 24 June at Faith Lutheran College.

Please find below a summary of the key points from this meeting, for your information:

1. All schools are committed to continue to seek and maintain support between each other.

Collectively we desire to serve our families with excellence and this is best achieved when

we work together.

2. Faith will not be accepting Year 7 enrolments until the State Government makes a

decision regarding the placement of Year 7 students in a secondary school environment.

Given that SA is the last remaining State to move in this direction, we would expect that at

some point in the future Year 7 will be seen as the first year of secondary school. When this

occurs we will be well planned and ready to transition students to maximise learning.

3. A “Working Group” with representation from all schools encompassing the Principal,

one council member and personnel with expertise in curriculum, finance and marketing will

be formed to work towards the eventual inclusion of Year 7 at secondary school.

4. School communities are to be kept informed of developments in relation to Year 7

enrolments.

In partnership with the LSA and our sister schools in the Barossa district we will continue to

support Faith College in planning for this predicted future change. Parents are welcome to

speak to me should you have any further questions.

BOOK WEEK & SCHOLASIC BOOK FAIR

This term is going to be a very busy and exciting term as

we are celebrating Book Week and our Scholastic Book

Fair.

The Theme for Book Week is ’Read across the universe’.

Throughout Book Week students will participate in various

activities related to the Children’s Book Council short-listed

books.

On Friday 23rd August we will be having an optional

dress-up day where students can come dressed related to

the theme ’Universe’

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the Valley of Hope

Centre during Book Week. The fair will be open daily from

8.30—9.30 am and 3.00—4.00 pm. Classes will have

the opportunity to visit the fair during school hours to make

wish lists. The Scholastic book fair offers a wide range of

books, posters and stationery great for Christmas presents

and all sales benefit our school library. More information

will be sent home prior to the fair.

Issue 5 Scholastic Orders are due back at school by Friday

9th August.

PREMIERS READING CHALLANGE

Congratulations to all students who have already completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2013. The challenge ends on

the 6th September 2013. For students who are still busy reading, keep going, there’s plenty of time left to complete the

challenge.

MATHS MANIA NIGHT

Here at St Jakobi we are passionate about learning! And one of the most important areas for life-long benefit is numeracy skills.

We believe that it is imperative that we give each child relevant, engaging opportunities to learn at an appropriate level – not

too hard and not too easy! You may have heard your child talking about the skills and investigations they are completing here at

school and you will have noticed references to iMaths in the student reports. We would love to share our Maths program with

you all so we are holding a…

Maths Mania Night If you want to:

know where to find the Australian Curriculum and how to find the learning outcomes for your child’s year level

know how St Jakobi runs its Maths program

know the place, in modern teaching and learning, of some of the ‘olden day’ skills we learnt as children e.g. tables

know how staff adapt the curriculum to support those who take a little longer to grasp Maths concepts or are gifted in the

area of Maths

know how to support your children in the area of Maths

see a display of student work samples from across the Year levels

come along and join in the fun. Whilst it is mainly for parents, this is a family friendly night, where we will do some talk ing, but

will also have an opportunity for Mums and Dads (and students if they come) to try out some Maths activities together, to ask the

staff questions and to find out how to support numeracy learning at home. Supper will also be provided. Watch out for the f lyer

coming home shortly but be sure to put Thursday 15th August at 7:30pm in the Valley of Hope Centre, in your diaries.

VACCATION CARE

We had a busy, fun time during July’s vacation care. The

highlight days for me were the costume dress-up party and

the boot camp day. Please come and check out our iPad,

which has our photographs taken during vacation care.

We have been busy planning the new September/October

vacation care program, which is published below. The

office will have a copy of this program and accompanying

booking forms. You can also obtain a copy at OSHC in the

coming weeks. If you have any ideas on what you might

like to do for this time please come and tell an OSHC staff

member so we can add it to our list of ideas for future

vacation care programs.

You can contact OSHC on 0400 825 593. Thank you to

everyone who is using this service. The OSHC mobile is in

use during OSHC business hours 7:30am – 6:00pm.

During weekends, the OSHC mobile is only checked once

on Sundays. Please ensure that all weekend messages for

the coming week on the OSHC phone are left before 6pm

Sunday nights, to avoid disappointment and to ensure that

we have sufficient staffing lead time.

Welcome to all the new school families! If you are new to

the school or you have another sibling that comes to OSHC

we need you to fill out an OSHC Enrolment Form before we

can accept new bookings. The enrolment form can be

obtained from the OSHC service. Please note that policy

prevents us from accepting your child into OSHC if an

enrolment form has not been completed first.

I am going on annual leave from 16th August – 16th

September 2013. While I am away Mr Wilder Bhranuxs

will be the certified supervisor of OSHC. If you have any

booking queries or billing enquires please see Mr Wilder.

Alternatively you can write a letter to me addressing any

concerns and I will process these upon my return to work.

Thanks for your time!
