Principal’s Report

Phone Policy for 2020

Many parents have discussed with us their concerns about the impact mobile phones are having on students’ learning and social development, not to mention concerns about cyber bullying. This is something that is reflected across the country. Research is showing that mobile phones can be a real addiction for many teenagers and also negatively impacting on their mental health as well as their learning. Many lead experts are calling on schools to do more to address this issue.

At Kelso High Campus we recognise that phones are a part of the modern world and if used properly can support learning in the classroom. For the past two years we have implemented a phone policy of “off and away” in the classroom unless they were being used for a learning activity. Despite this phones are still being used inappropriately in the classroom and in the playground and we have realised that we need to be doing more to address this important issue.

From next year we will be introducing a new phone policy which uses the Yondr pouches. This is where students will still be able to have their phones with them but they will be in a lockable pouch and students will be unable to access them during school hours, unless it is for a pre-planned learning activity or a medical condition. Parents and carers will still be able to contact students through the front office on 6331 4544.

We would really welcome the opportunity to explain in more detail how the policy will work and answer any of your questions. We strongly recommend coming to the parent information session on Tuesday 19th November at 6.00 pm in the Human Movement Studio if possible. In the meantime the following link provides more information about the pouches. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-06-22/mobile-phone-lock-and-learn-trial-in-wauchope/11209716

Progress Reports for 2020

From next year we are hoping to introduce twice a term progress reports for all students which will be emailed out to families. These reports will show students attendance and give them an engagement score out of 10. This score will be based on data which is collected on student attendance including whole day and partial unexplained absences, submission of assessment tasks, wearing the correct uniform and behaving appropriately in class and on the playground. It will not be replacing the more detailed school reports but is just another way of communicating to families. This will be explained in more detail at the parent information session – another reason to attend if you can!

Congratulations

Students who performed at CAPA night – what a fabulous show!

KHC Show team who represented us at Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza with their usual

professionalism and enthusiasm

Our new school leaders – what a great leadership assembly and leadership development day

Our HSC students – congratulations it’s over! Looking forward to seeing you at the grad!

Our new Year 12 students - we’ve had glowing reports of how well you have started your HSC

year and the great use you are making of the senior study! Keep it up!

College Principal’s Report

As people are well aware, Kelso High Campus is one half of Denison College. Whilst each campus has its own identity, culture and decision making authority, it is important that some programs and processes are aligned cross-campus and coordinated at a college level. This helps to promote consistency and high standards at both campuses and provides maximum opportunities for students. Every student and teacher at Bathurst and Kelso High Campuses is a member of Denison College. When we refer to “college programs”, we are talking about those processes and programs that involve both campuses working together. Some of the current college programs include:

Hello HSC: All Year 11 students were interviewed in Week 1 of this term, and provided with guidance and coaching related to their HSC courses, including whether they should drop or continue with all their subjects. The program was very successful, efficient and worthwhile.

Future Directions: Year 10 students received their 2020 subject allocations on Thursday last week. In 2020 a total of 40 Year 11 courses are being offered across the college, as both shared courses and stand-alone campus courses. This year, for the first time we were able to prioritise student choices, rather than the campus they attend, in determining the subject mix. This resulted in considerably more students getting their preferences than in previous years. We have organised an orientation in Week 8 this term, for the 90 students who will be travelling for shared courses, to familiarise themselves with the other campus before commencing their shared course in 2020.

Student Leadership Forum: On Tuesday this week Denison College leaders hosted a Central West Leadership Forum for 190 students from Denison College Bathurst and Kelso campuses and schools from across the area, including: Kandos HS, Lithgow HS, Cowra HS, Oberon HS, Orange HS, Canobolas HS, Canowindra HS, Molong CS. The day was jointly organised by leadership coordinators Mel McFarland (KHC) and Sally Hennessey (BHC) and supported by a number of teachers from both campuses, who led the various Denison leadership teams and ran sessions for the students. Denison Captains Harvey Shead and Ella Davis (BHC) and Tom Rodham and Laura Risch (KHC) did an outstanding job as MCs.

The highlight of the day was keynote speaker John Coutis, who gave a frank and moving account of his life and the challenges he has faced. His message of respect, responsibility and compassion struck a chord with everyone present. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, and there are plans for a follow up in 2020.

High Potential and Gifted Education Program (previously Gifted and Talented) in 2020 a college High Potential and Gifted Education program will run involving the Year 7 academically talented classes from both campuses. The collaboration in English will involve a weekly double period where the classes will come together to work on a reading and writing project. In HSIE the classes will also come together, though less frequently, to undertake technology project based learning. Detailed planning for both programs is underway

Denison Decathlon In week 6 Denison College will host the Denison Decathlon, an event for High Potential and Gifted students in primary schools and Year 7 at both campuses.

Career Connections Academy In 2020, Year 10 students from both campuses will have the opportunity to be involved in the Denison Career Connections Academy. Students in this program will be supported with:

Identification of career goals through Future Pathways, Industry Experience and Future Direction

Career Mentoring with targeted advice, support and mentoring for students linked to specific career clusters and occupations – including Work preparation program Industry Experience – working 5 days over 5 weeks in an industry of their interest. This can be

extended if things are going well. More opportunities for School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

More information will be provided to Year 9 students in the coming weeks

Please call me at Kelso High Campus if you wish to discuss anything related to the college.

Central West Leadership Forum

One hundred Denison College students, along with ninety students from schools around the Central West attended the first ever Central West Leadership Forum. Our School Captains from both Campuses did a fabulous job hosting the day, their first official duty in their new role.

Students listened to the motivational speaker John Coutis, participated in workshops and planned how they are going to make a difference in the future.

Schools involved were Kelso High Campus, Lithgow High School, Cowra High School, Orange High School, Oberon High School, Canobolas High School, Canowindra High School, Kandos High School and Molong Central School.

Bathurst High Campus hosted the UN Youth Voice competition on Monday the 28th of October. UN Youth Voice invites students from Years 7-10 to solve issues that affect your community, nation and the world. Maxine McGrath from Year 8 thoroughly researched how we can promote mental health in Australia. Maxine brought forward proactive solutions about the need to normalise conversations about mental health by making it a more significant part of the school curriculum. She also addressed the need for the media and fiction texts to represent mental health conditions without stereotyping. Thomas Henderson represented the campus in the senior division by exploring how Australia can improve economic equality between its citizens. He presented a clear model that included the government imposing luxury taxes and using this money to fund infrastructure projects that would create more jobs. Thomas was able to respond to the adjudicators’ questions by highlighting the positives of his solutions and how he could overcome obstacles. Well Done Maxine and Thomas!

Kids Teaching Kids

Students from Year 7 at Bathurst and Kelso Campuses represented Denison College at the Central West Division of the Kids Teaching Kids Sustainability competition. Four teams were selected to present their environmental lessons to Year 5 and 6 students from Bathurst South Public School and then went on to Wellington High School for the regional event. They raised awareness about threatened species in our area and represented the college to a high standard. Well Done!

Education Perfect Kelso High Campus has been trialling an interactive program that includes activities in English, HSIE, PDHPE, Science, Maths and Languages.

In Weeks 9-10 of last term students competed in the Education Perfect Championships and completed 47,212 questions in the two week time frame! Our top scorers in each subject were awarded a Dominoes voucher!

Congratulations to Hayden Cupitt, Kaitlyn Cupitt, Becky Parish and Ava Burns.

Senior Study

Year 12 at Kelso High Campus have made an awesome start to the year in their study periods. These periods are invaluable to all students as they allow them to work in their own way, be it collaborative or individual. Students are able to seek advice from the Senior Mentor, Ms Jude Murphy who is the supervisor of the area full time.

The newly developed Study Diaries allow students to plan their study goals for the period, work towards these goals and watch the progress over time. These diaries are overseen by Ms Murphy.

The room is still developing with more stimulus for the walls and laptops to be allocated for the area, but it is well on the way to becoming a safe and productive space for Year 12.

Congratulations guys and keep working to your potential.

Stroevey Challenge Number 255

5 IMPOSSIBLES?

1. A plane crashed and every single person on board died, yet there were survivors, how can this be? (hint: no animals were aboard)

2. When can you add two to eleven and get one as the correct answer (you don't have to be a math genius for this one)?

3. An American who has never been to another country was standing on solid ground when he saw the Great Wall of China, how (the man was born and raised in the USA)?

4. If nine thousand, nine hundred and nine is written as 9,909; how do you write twelve thousand, twelve hundred and twelve?

5. You can see me, you can feel me, if you touch me you will die. What am I?

Boys Cricket

Kelso High Campus Opens Boys Cricket side travelled to Cowra for Round 2 in Week 1 after defeating Mudgee earlier in the year. Kelso won the toss and bowled first with Justin Stephenson and Jacob Ryan bowling tight.

Pick of the bowlers were Lachlan Bemrose with 3 wickets, Calvin Windus with 2 wickets (including an absolute classic catch from Tom Judge on the boundary where the ball looked like it was going for 6 until he outstretched his right arm and the ball stuck in his hand).

Cowra's tail wagged with them scoring 160 runs.

During the Kelso run chase we lost regular wickets but Flynn Taylor was the spark in our batting and was looking like Steve Smith until he was dismissed by some good bowling.

We finished a fair few runs short of Cowra's total but the boys played the game with great effort. Great sportsmanship was shown throughout the team.

Thanks to Thomas Rodham, Ike Bellamy and Jai Fitzgerald.

CHS Cricket

Tom Judge and Jacob Ryan have been competing at CHS cricket in Grafton against Hunter.

Hunter ended the day with 2/173 with Western all out for 168. Tom batted and scored 22 runs while Jacob bowled 1/25 off 4 overs.

Great effort boys!

Solution to Number 255

1. Answer: If you figured out that "single" was in reference to their marital status then you would have gotten the right answer in that all the married people survived.

2. Answer: When you are adding time on a clock. 3. Answer: The man was standing on the moon. 4. Answer: 13,212 5. Answer: The Sun.
