Principal’s Report

Welcome to our last newsletter for the year! I’m going to confess that I’m cheating a little bit and using an abridged version of my presentation speech. Yes – I’m a little out of creativity and yes it does help with some time pressures – but more importantly it offers an overall summary of the highlights of 2019 – of which there are plenty!

First of all congratulations to all the students who received awards at Presentation Night – we’re incredibly proud of you! It really was a fabulous night and an outstanding celebration of all the achievements and highlights of 2019. I’m not usually prone to tears – but I did feel a little bit emotional that night as I was just so proud of our wonderful campus!

So here is an abridged version of some of the highlights I spoke about! Even if you heard it the first time round I think it’s well worth reading again!

Teaching and Learning Our most important role is to deliver the very best teaching and learning to our students and we have some wonderful celebrations in this area.

We have achieved some of the best growth we have seen in literacy – our improvement in writing and Aboriginal literacy has been particularly high. We have continued to show excellent growth in numeracy. This year has seen the introduction of Maths Pathways in Year 7 – an individualised program that has seen outstanding growth amongst our Year 7 students. Our English faculty introduced regular writing competitions – which has been embraced by many students. There are many celebrations with our 2018 HSC results –Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Senior Science, Maths Standard 2, Industrial Technology, Dance, English Standard, Modern and Ancient History and Business Studies - all had some of the best results we have seen. Just one example of excellent teaching - our current Year 12 Physics students are being taught by Miss Lauren Inwood who has been recognised at a national level as a leading expert in her field. I encourage you to read the specific details on Facebook

In regards to our HSC results I think what we are really striving for is that every student is provided with the best post school opportunities for them. I’m delighted to be able to say that already for our 2019 Year 12 students we have had over 40 offers of early university entry. In addition many students have secured apprenticeships some of which have been a direct result of school work placements.

Broad Range of Curriculum and Practical Learning Activities Students participated in activities that gave them invaluable real world experience such as retail world skills competition and commerce share market game. Our STEM program is extremely exciting providing students with important skills and opportunities for the future. We had a Spanish HSC class for the first time and have a current Year 12 class. We are the only school in the region to offer this subject! We also hosted many successful interschool Japanese visits and our students had the opportunity to visit Japan!

Finally, very close to our hearts is the success of our Hospitality students in running a first rate CAFÉ for students and staff - with real barista coffee.

Sport and Extra-Curricular Activities We know that for many students it’s the opportunity to get involved in sport and extra-curricular activities that is one of the biggest highlights and positives of school. Just a snapshot - Our Ag team again represented us proudly at many shows and competitions and continues to punch well above its weight with the results they achieve against much larger teams. Our stage 5 Debating team were the zone champions and got to the regional finals of Western Region. Michaela Doungmanee was chosen to go to state as part of the Western Region Team. TJ Henderson was successful in getting to the State Semi Finals of the UN Youth Voice Competition.

Our Cirkus Surreal team continues to go from strength to strength with not only their recent absolutely outstanding show but also their performances at many local events. Our CAPA night, Brandish performance, Western Region Dance Festival and Bathurst Eisteddfod gave students a wonderful opportunity to perform and showcase their talent. Of particular note is Mia Ryan who was selected as a featured artist for the school spectacular.

In sport the athletic and swimming carnival days were both excellent events, we had a large number of students go on to represent the school at Region and Western at state level.

We have recently participated in a Premier's Sporting Challenge event where students engage with developers from various sports and develop skills that they take to partnering primary schools. Next year the students will host a day with students from Raglan and Perthville. This now has been established as a stepping stone for students seeking roles as sport captains within the school and enhancing leadership qualities.

Volleyball continues to achieve outstanding results – with the Open Girls coming third in the state knockout competition. We also had fantastic results and great participation in futsal, hockey, AFL, cricket and basketball.

Just a few standout individual performances. Harriet Fitzsimmons in Volleyball – captained the U16s CHS Nationals and was selected in the honorary Australian team. Denzel Nicholson who went to Russia for Snooker U18s World Championship. Lachlan Howard - was named in the All Australian U16's Hockey Team which will go on to play in South Africa next year.

Inclusive Education and Supporting Every Student To Be Their Best. I really can’t rave about our Support and Wellbeing Faculties enough. They support students not only with their learning but also help to build their independence, provide practical living skills and provide many community access and transition opportunities. Our dedicated Aboriginal Education team supports not just our indigenous students but also makes sure Aboriginal culture and identity is recognised and celebrated across the whole school. One growing area in the school that I am particularly proud of is the increase in student led community and school service activities – fundraising activities for bushfires, farmers, RUOK day. If we can raise students to be kind, help others and have empathy I think that is one of the most important things we can do.

Overall taking over as Relieving Principal has been a lot of work and of course responsibility - it has also been a great honour and privilege to lead such a fantastic campus. I would like to particularly acknowledge our incredibly dedicated and capable staff who work tirelessly in their many varied roles to provide the very best opportunities and support for our students.

There you have it! I could have spoken for double the time about our wonderful campus but I was under pressure not to speak for too long!

Thank you everyone for your support throughout the year – I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Christmas. We look forward to working with you in 2020 to provide your child with the very best education and opportunities we can!

Denison Decathlon Success

Our High Potential and Gifted Education Program has provided a unique and exciting experience for the Year 7 Academically Capable classes for 2019 and 2020.

Energy and enthusiasm was at an all-time high at Kelso High Campus as students vigorously navigated through academic challenges across their key learning areas in cross-campus teams and even had energy to spare for a dance with their pizza lunch!

Excellence in Teaching

Ms Lauren Inwood's excellence in teaching has been recognised by being selected to present at the 2019 Robotic Telescopes, Student Research and Education Conference in Melbourne from 8th -12th December. She has been asked to host two workshops for other teachers who are interested in running similar projects to the one that Ms Inwood developed for the Year 12 Physics Depth Study this year.

Ms Inwood, working in collaboration with astronomers from Edith Cowan University, accessed real data from the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network for the Year 12 students. The students were required to report their findings as an article suitable for a scientific journal. The Year 12 class requested data for 25 different open star clusters and determined each cluster's age, distance and chemical composition, as well as how much dust and gas was in the space between Earth and each cluster. The students were given a real experience of how scientists work in the field of Astronomy.

Ms Inwood has also been asked to be the support speaker for the keynote speaker Mr Alan Duffy, professional astronomer and science communicator, at the conference dinner.

Ms Inwood began her teaching career here at Kelso High Campus 2.5 years ago. In that short time she has had made a huge contribution to the Science Faculty and school in promoting Science to the school community, NSW Science Teachers and now teachers across Australia. We are honoured and proud to have her working with us at Kelso High Campus.

A Gift to the Science Faculty

Mr Paul Martensz presented a gift to the Science Faculty on behalf of the ex-Science teachers of Kelso High Campus. These new ProjectLab Air sensors can be used to monitor air quality including carbon dioxide levels and particulates.

Mr Paul Martensz is a retired science teacher who worked at Kelso High School from 1988-2003.

Also in the photo are the Head Teacher of Science, Dr Adrienne Beddis and Science/Agriculture teacher Ms Sarah Streeter.

Thank you to all the ex-Science teachers of Kelso High for this generous gift.

UN Youth Voice

UN Youth Voice invites students from Year 7-10 to solve issues that affect your community, nation and the world. Thomas Henderson represented the campus in the senior division by exploring how Australia can improve economic equality between its citizens. Thomas has been selected to compete at the State Semi Finals to be held later this month at the University of Technology (UTS).

Congratulations Thomas!

Welcome to the Kelso High Archive Page

The idea of starting an archive was prompted by the loss of so much of the school’s documentary history in the 2005 fire. People’s memories live on, however, and the amount of memorabilia that has come flooding in has been terrific. This online archive collects those scans, photos, videos from the Kelso community.

There is also a ‘hard copy’ archive being housed at the school. It contains every Panorama magazine, original photos, ex-students’ assignments, old uniforms and badges and much more. The first principal of the school, Norm Robinson, has donated his own extensive personal memorabilia collection as well.

Thanks to all the ex-students and teachers who have contributed items to the archive. It is a ‘work in progress’ so please continue to send in anything you think may be of interest to [email protected]

The 2019 Kelso High School Decade Award

This is now the 23rd year of the Kelso High Campus Decade Award. Each year we recognise a student who has completed their secondary education at Kelso High School more than 10 years ago, and has gone on to achieve outstanding success or have excelled in their chosen field.

This year’s recipient is Owen Franks.

Owen graduated from Kelso High in 1990.

Owen attended Sydney University from 1991 to 1995. Here he is being awarded his Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Political Science and Government. His thesis was “An analysis of privatisation of the electricity industry in NSW”

Owen, as many young graduates did, broadened his experience and skills by travelling the world, and not necessarily working in his field of expertise.

In 2000 Owen landed a job as a Producer/News Editor with the British Broadcasting Corporation in London. He put shows to air from the control room, worked as News Editor and Field Producer for the BBC both domestically and internationally.

In 2005 Owen began a career with Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera English is a Qatari pay television news channel headquartered in Doha, Qatar. It is the first English-language news channel to be headquartered in the Middle East. He started in London as a Producer, doing a similar job as he had at the BBC.

In 2008 he moved to Qatar as Program Editor overseeing all aspects of news programming for a 24-hour global network. Owen was an integral player in Al Jazeera’s award winning coverage of the Arab Spring - a series of anti-government protests, uprisings, and armed rebellions that spread across North Africa and the Middle East in the early 2010s.

Then followed a move to New York as Senior Executive Producer in 2013, with the specific role of launching a new 24 hour news broadcaster. He created programs, hired & trained staff and created a special events department to cover large news stories. Al Jazeera was awarded Broadcaster of the Year at the prestigious New York Festivals World's Best TV & Films awards.

His final Al Jazeera move was to San Francisco in 2014 as Executive Producer. His task there was to launch AJ+ - Al Jazeera’s digital channel aimed at millennials. It was an award winning news brand that received 2.2 billion views in 2015.

Owen’s experience & successes saw him head hunted by Bloomberg TV Philippines, in 2015, to help them launch their local TV and digital channels. Bloomberg Television is an American-based pay television network that reaches over 310 million homes worldwide.

In 2017, as the Head of Asia Pacific based in Hong Kong, Owen was instrumental in launching TicToc by Bloomberg, the world’s first 24/7 news channel on Twitter. This digital start up is aimed at the ‘new guard’ – the decision makers of tomorrow. TicToc has been at the forefront of the media reporting at the recent Hong Kong protest movement.

Here is Owen's reply with views of Hong Kong in the background - https://youtu.be/BD72KNF2uy0

As a side note Owen’s father, Warwick, a Bathurst Living Legend, was once the Australian Editor for the cricketer’s bible Wisden. Warwick was a well-known local cricketer, recognised as a stubborn opening bat, and not known for his bowling. He never achieved a hat-trick.

Until now - his daughter Alison was the 1998 Decade Award recipient; his son Ashley was the 2018 Decade Award recipient; and now Owen gives him the hat-trick!

Doing Our Bit!

Thanks to the generous donations from staff and students, Kelso High have raised over $1,500 that will be donated to schools that have been affected by the recent fires.

A massive thanks to everyone that helped make this day a success!

Return & Earn

Congratulations Kelso High Campus!

Together we have raised over $1,000 in Earn and Return money and have saved thousands of bottles and cans from ending up in landfill.

This money will be used to make Kelso High an even better place!

CAPA Stars…

Maddie Sufong is a star in the drama classroom and onstage in school

productions such as The Butler Did it Singing, where she performed her main role with vivaciousness.

She is always positive and always enthusiastic to take on extra roles such as MC on CAPA Night 2019. A performance that delighted many.

Her confident and friendly attitude supports and encourages other students in their studies and her have-a-go energetic attitude is an inspiration to everyone in the CAPA community. What a talented CAPA Star!

Becky Parish of Year 7 involves herself in many of the creative arts subjects,

however, her sculptural and clay working talents in Visual Arts have really stood out this term.

Becky created an outstanding ceramic pot, where she used her lino print design to create a textural surface, which was then glazed. Her addition of puppy sculptures to the edges of her work, helped repeat the design on the sides of her pot.

Congratulations Becky for being an outstanding Visual Arts student and creative arts all-rounder.

Milika Hines has worked extremely hard in Visual Arts this year. She has

produced some wonderful ideas across the different materials she has explored. Her Self Portrait Project explored her interests and identity in a wonderfully creative way.

Milika has been a dedicated and hard working student and it is a pleasure to announce her as the CAPA Star of the Week.

Congratulations Milika!

Anja Swiegers and Emily Butler have thrown themselves into the life of

the circus program with enthusiasm.

They have stepped up, performing at a range of events and have worked to consistently improve their skills. Their confidence on stilts is excellent and they have demonstrated skill and commitment in all aspects of their training.

Well done, Anja and Emily!

Elly Rudd is star of the week for her ongoing

commitment and dedication towards Dance. Elly is a keen and talented performer who is a valued member of the Kelso High Dance Company and the Stage 5 dance class. Her performances this year have included: Western Region Dance Festival, Bathurst Eisteddfod, CAPA Concert, performances during award ceremonies and she was also a junior performer for a HSC Dance major work. Elly always works well with her peers and continually challenges herself to further improve her skills. She has achieved outstanding results in both the written and theory components in the Stage 5 Dance course.

Congratulations Elly!

Agriculture

HSC Agriculture students spent a day touring the Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange and Farmgate Meats. As part of their Beef Product Study Tour, students learned about the marketing chain for beef cattle and gained insight into the influences that international trade has on beef prices. Graeme and his team from Farmgate Meats demonstrated processing of beef and discussed the impressive quality assurance measures used in their retail of beef products.

It was a great day of observations which will help students apply their understanding of content studied in the classroom.

Number 256 One for the Mathematicians out there 😊

If the sum of two numbers is 2 and the product of the same two numbers is 3, find the sum of the reciprocals of the two numbers. (Who needs to look up what a reciprocal is?)

Year 12 Playground Area

Year 12 2020 have begun setting up their new playground area. The Year 12 area is the first in a long time that these students get to have their own space. There is lots of new furniture arriving and things like basketball hoops and flower pots to make the space as beautiful and comfortable as possible.

This area will be handed down to successive Year 12 groups, so all students need to take care of it.

If any members of our school community wish to donate outdoor furniture, plants, fooseball tables or similar in good condition, please contact the school.

World Ninja Games

Congratulations to Year 7 student Soraya Kean who came 1st in her age group at the Australian Nationals Ninja Warrior games. Soraya has now been invited to compete at the World Ninja Games in Las Vegas next year. What a terrific achievement!

Kelvin Cooke Shield

Each year the Kelvin Cooke Shield is contested by Bathurst and Kelso High students and is held in memorial for the late Kelvin Cooke, an ex-student of Bathurst High and parent of ex-Kelso High students.

The natural athleticism of the Kelso High boys was demonstrated along with local and Australian talents for the boys to win 8 to 1.

Our young girls team faced a tough competition against many premier league players from Bathurst High. The girls conceded 6 goals in the first half to put the combined score at 8-7 to Bathurst High. The girls showed grit and strength in an epic nail biter second half where they did not concede a single goal to come away with an overall win!

WRAS 2020 Selections

The Western Region Academy of Sport is pleased to advise the following students from Denison College – Kelso High Campus have been selected in WRAS 2020 programs.

AFL Program

Elly Rudd – Year 10

Lone Star

Emilee Curran – Year 10 – for swimming

Basketball Junior Development Program

Abbey Bracken – Year 8

Roxy George – Year 8

Netball

Hannah-Lee Williams – Year 7

Bronte Cullen-Ward (satellite athlete) – Year 7

Congratulations to all students selected.

Solution to Number 256

Since the sum of the reciprocals is being sought, we must end up with 1

𝑥 +

1

𝑦

Continuing in this spirit, we must ask: “What might this have come from?” One possibility is the

sum of these fractions, namely, 𝑥+𝑦

𝑥𝑦 (getting a common denominator)

Remember the two original equations, x + y = 2 and xy = 3. They essentially give us the numerator value, 2, and the denominator value, 3.

So the answer to the original question (problem) is 2
