Term 4 Week 5 13th November 2018
Week Focus 5 – we are SAFE at assembly.
Muswellbrook PS School has secured outstanding results in the 2018 Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition. The competition is now in its 38th year, attracting almost 19,000 students from 340 schools. In 2018, our Year 6 students achieved 6 Distinctions and 17 Merit awards. Our Year 5 students achieved 16 Distinctions and 14 merit Awards. A special mention must be made of one Year 5 student, Sidney Murray, who received a High Distinction scoring in the 99.48th percentile. I congratulate Sidney for this magnificent achievement, as well as all of our students who obviously did their personal best! Well done
From the Principal: Kindergarten Orientation Program
I would like to thank Ms Lana Mulholland for her fantastic organisation with the Kindergarten orientation program. The pre-schoolers are thoroughly enjoying their time at school and the sessions in the
hall for parents are most informative. We look forward to this week’s session, which is taking place on Wednesday 14th November at 9.30am in the hall.
P & C Meeting At tonight’s meeting, Mr Kerrigan will be showcasing our school grounds, which have recently been upgraded in many ways. We look forward to welcoming as many parents as possible. Everyone will meet outside the staffroom at 6pm, free child minding will be available.
End of Year Celebrations There are many events happening at the end of the year during weeks 9 and 10 of this term. They are all marked on the Term Planner. Please mark these dates and times in your diaries and we look forward to seeing as many parents and carers as possible at our annual Presentation Day assemblies.

ACADEMIC
CORNER
Mrs Janette Scowen -Learning and Support
Muswellbrook Public School recognises the unique
strengths and needs of all students and is committed to
providing a rich, comprehensive and challenging program
for our students. While all students will thrive with a
differentiated curriculum, some
students demonstrate exceptional
strengths which require further
challenge and extension to the
classroom curriculum.
Along with our existing enrichment
opportunities of debating, drama group, music ensembles,
PSSA sports and ICAS competitions, we have been able to
make available to our students some further opportunities.
The Learning and Support team has expanded this year
and as part of our initiative, we are supporting enrichment
students to further develop and enhance their skills in
writing and mathematics.
Enrichment Mathematics Group. Following some outstanding personal achievements in the
NAPLAN, we have recently formed a Year 5 enrichment
maths group. These students are engaging in challenges
with Mrs Andrews, to extend their learning and further
develop their advanced problem-solving skills.
Passion Projects We have also had a selection of students working on passion projects. This concept of intentional time spent on projects of interest, involves the students researching their passions and sharing their insights. Students have selected some interesting research topics throughout the semester including: What metals are used to make space shuttles and why? How can birds stand on wires without being electrocuted? When and why Governor Macquarie initiated the expedition to establish Port Macquarie as a settlement?
Enrichment Writing Groups Students from Stage 2 and Stage 3 have been working
through the Seven Steps to Writing Success process with
Mrs Scowen. The students have completed some
outstanding pieces of work in the imaginative and
persuasive genres. They have recently commenced their
research to assist them in creating interesting informative
texts. The texts will be presented using Green Screen
technology.
Here are just a few snippets of some of the students’ writing
for you to enjoy.

The Ladder
Tales for tell of an ancient ladder. It’s
been there for centuries, survived war
and supposed to lead to the Gods.
Sadly, no one has the courage to
explore, however, a sad afternoon came when the ladder
broke free from the podium where it lay. Slashing the earth
as fast as a tired employee falls asleep in his breakfast.
Suddenly it came to a halt at an abandoned house, still
heading towards the sky. Then, without warning, the part of
the ladder that was slashed to the ground, disappeared!
Everyone had interest in the ladder, interest and fear. Jack
(5/6S)
The Flame of the Underworld
Nobody has stood so close to a fire that the soot practically
lingers on your lips. Fires don’t just have smell, they have
taste too. They taste bitter, like the rancid memory of the
person whose skin was seared in the smoke.
Griselda strutted down the wooden ladder to a blackened
world. Her brother waiting for her at the end.
“You know we’re not meant to be here, right,” he stated
nervously. Scarlett (5/6R)
Should Enrichment Writing Groups Continue?
For those of us venturing off to high school, enrichment
writing is a great opportunity for us to further our skills, so
that we are prepared for upcoming assessments. This group
pushes us to experiment with a range of vocabulary and try
new techniques to improve our work.
Audrey (5/6R)
In the term that we have been part of enrichment writing, my
writing has improved greatly. I have even been inspired to
write my own story book, which could quite easily turn into a
series of books. If enrichment writing didn’t continue, many of
us writers would not have an exciting world to escape to
every Tuesday and Wednesday morning. (Sophia 5/6H)
Many of the writers in the enrichment group (including me),
may want to become authors someday, but they will never
be able to complete their training without further guidance.
We absolutely must continue writing groups, to help these
talented writers reach their full potential. Can you imagine a
poor child not being able to pursue his dream of becoming a
famous author, because the Principal shut down the group!
Lucas (5/6R)
The magical adventures we jump through, the roller coaster
of excitement, the laughter, joy and fulfilment, you can’t
possibly take this away from us. The creativity that our group
offers is phenomenal, the sharing of texts and the expansion
of our vocabulary. It gives writers like me an opportunity to grow
and improve. Marisa (5/6H)
