T he March edition of the Test Valley Forum Magazine is packed with useful local information and many

interesting news articles.

Please keep your letters and emails coming as we are always delighted to read your feedback. Speak to us and let us have your thoughts, be it on the magazine itself or the content of an article. The Forum is for the community and the community needs a voice, so our letters page will give you the freedom to speak.

So why have we re-named the Stockbridge and Test Valley Forum?

Since the magazine's launch in July 2008 the magazine has grown in its popularity and distribution area. At its inception we were very focused on Stockbridge as a centre for the magazine but now we feel we encompass so much of the Test Valley that we should widen our horizons and with it our name. Nothing has changed apart from our name, we still provide all the news for the local area in an informative and interesting magazine.

Don't forget if you would like to read the magazine online simply visit our website www.testvalleyforum.co.uk and click on 'Latest Issue' in the menu bar . If you saw something in a previous issue and need to find it then click on 'Old Issues' tab in the menu bar.

We are always thinking of ways to improve your local magazine and we are keen to expand our readership yet further.

ISSUE 45 MARCH www.testvalleyforum.co.uk

Construction of a safe, shared pedestrian and cycleway to link up the Test Way at

Stockbridge is now in progress thanks to Sustrans funding and some quick work from Test Valley Borough Council and Hampshire County Council.

The scheme, along the A3057/A30 verge in Stockbridge formed part of the Test Valley Access Plan and Cycle Strategy and Network. A lack of funding meant the plans were on hold but now Sustrans, the charity that enables people to walk, cycle and use public transport for more everyday journeys, has allocated funding to the scheme.

The Sustrans funding will come through the Big Lottery fund which works towards creating more National Cycle Network routes to link communities to local shops, schools and other amenities, in this instance the off-road sections of the Test Way at Stockbridge. The provision of funding was originally subject to the money being spent this financial year so Test Valley Borough Council, in conjunction with Hampshire County Council, moved quickly to secure the completion of the route which is part of the National Cycle Network (NCN246) as well as a long distance footpath. The design for the scheme has been completed and construction work commenced during the week of 6 February and is expected to take around 14 weeks.

Councillor Martin Hatley, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Transport at Test Valley Borough Council said “I am delighted that we have secured the funding from Sustrans to complete this section of the Test Way. A Council aim is to deliver on the public’s wish to provide local leisure facilities for them to enjoy, in this instance the opportunity to walk or cycle through some of the South’s most beautiful countryside”.

Sustrans South East Regional Director Simon Pratt said, “We’re delighted to be able to offer the funding to create a new walking and cycling route along the A3057/A30. We hope that the new route will encourage even more people in Stockbridge to get around on foot or by bike.”

One of the funding requirements is that each scheme will also be part of a national art programme that provides a Portrait Bench on the route. Each bench has three life-size local figures cut from weathered steel and installed behind or in front of a simple bench. The local portraits will be nominated and chosen by the local community led by a local Steering Group which is currently being set up.

For more information on the Sutrans cycle network visit:http://www.sustrans.org.uk/

Discover the Benefits ofLive in CareAs the population gets older,

more and more people are using ‘domiciliary care

companies’ to provide assistance and care for family members. One of the options often mis-understood and overlooked by people is the ‘live in’ care packages available.

Rather than a carer rushing in to see the client for maybe as little as 15 minutes a day, the carer actually lives in the client's home with them – this provides great benefits and opportunities for the person receiving the care, here are just a few:

• Companionship and Independence – they live in the comfort of their own home

with help at hand when they want it and need it.• No restrictions on timings - eat, bathe and go to bed when they want to, not when the carer can fit it in their schedule of visits.• Care management – Carers who know them, the way they like to live and what they like doing.• Peace of mind for everyone - You and your family will have total re-assurance and peace of mind that someone is on hand, in the home, to help, assist and be a companion

For more information on the benefits of Live In Care contact AccessCare24 on Tel: 01264 326 505.

Ward Sister calls for yourSupport on red & Whiteappeal Day

Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal Day is three weeks

away. Among those supporting the day on Friday 9th March will be 36-year old Yvonne Lo, one of the ward sisters on the 22-bed bone marrow transplant and leukaemia unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Working closely with patients who are receiving intensive treatment for life threatening blood cancers, Yvonne knows first hand the importance of the charity’s £1.76million campaign to improve facilities.

Yvonne said, “I’ve been working on the bone marrow transplant unit for ten years now, and have been a ward sister for the last four. Day to day we administer intensive chemotherapy and supportive care for both inpatients and outpatients. Our patients have to stay on the ward for weeks at a time often in isolation. For this reason not only the care they receive but the environment they are cared for in needs to be of the highest standard. Our aim is to make our patients as comfortable as we can during their treatment and hope that they will be well enough to return home as soon as possible.”

Yvonne continued, “We are often the only people our patients will see during their stay on the unit due to their high risk of acquiring an infection. If loved ones are unwell they are not able to visit. For patients with young families they may not see their children for at least a month. This can be very distressing during an already difficult time.”

Following successful treatment with the team on the inpatient unit, patients have to make regular follow up visits back to the hospital to

receive top up doses of treatment and for blood tests to ensure that they are recovering well, but there is currently no dedicated area for this. The Red & White Appeal aims to raise £1.76million to create a specialist day treatment unit for these patients which will be built adjacent to the inpatient facilities, vastly improving the quality of care that the nursing team can provide.

Southampton Hospital Charity is calling for supporters to fundraise on Red & White Appeal Day, Friday 9th March to help make the project a reality.

Yvonne said, “We hope that everyone will pull together and help support Red & White Appeal Day by organising their own fundraising activities. I will be organising a cake sale outside the main entrance of Southampton General Hospital on Friday 9th March with the help of the team and some of our patients who are now recovering will be volunteering their time and effort to make their favourite recipes. This has been a regular event that everyone looks forward to; those who make the cakes and those who eat them!”

Yvonne continued, “We are asking people across the city to do the same and help us to raise money for our patients who need your support.”

If you would like to organise a cake sale or any event or activity for Red & White Appeal Day, let us know and our fundraising team will be happy to support you.

Call Southampton Hospital Charity on 023 8079 8881 or visit www.redandwhiteappeal.org to find out more about how you can get involved.

How lucky are you?If my email junk folder is anything

to go by then I’m extremely lucky! There’s millions of pounds of

inheritance just waiting to be claimed. Business opportunities if only I say yes before midnight. Tax refunds due and people wanting me to confirm all my confidential information to ensure my money is kept safe!

So, do we make our own luck? In a UK survey conducted by Prof Richard Wiseman, many people described how they wore lucky clothes to exams and interviews, used their lucky numbers when choosing lottery numbers and saluted magpies. Some of the more unusual superstitious behaviours were:

• Always avoid staying in the bathroom once the toilet has been flushed.• Always draw a smiley face in a free pint of Guinness.• Always leave a house by the same door that you used to enter.• Never have the volume on the car stereo set to volume 13.

When a clock has matching numbers, such as 12:12, I have tosay 1212 out loud. Whenever I see a hearse, I touch my collar until I see a bird. Touching wood is the most popular UK superstition, followed by crossing fingers, avoiding ladders, not smashing mirrors, carrying a lucky charm and having superstitious beliefs about the number 13.

Women come out as more superstitious than men, and young people more than old.

What sorts of people are superstitious? The survey examined the possible relationship between superstitiousbeliefs and whether people...

...worry about life.(E.g: Do you agree/disagree with the statement: ‘I tend to worry about life’).….have a strong need for control(E.g: Do you agree/disagree with

the statement: ‘I get quite anxious when I'm in a situation over which I have no control’).

...do not like ambiguity in their lives(E.g: Do you agree/disagree with the statement: ‘I believe thatthere is a clear difference between right and wrong’).

The results were striking.People who tend to worry about life are far more superstitiousthan others – 50% of worriers compared to just 24% of non-worriers.

People who have a strong need for control in their lives are farmore superstitious than others - 42% with a high need for control compared to just 22% of people indicating low need for control.

People who have a low tolerance for ambiguity are far moresuperstitious than those with a high tolerance - 38% of thosewith low tolerance compared to just 30% of those with high tolerance.

So why does it matter? To believe that events and experiences in your life are primarily controlled by external forces such as luck, fate, chance or powerful others will mean you don’t take full responsibility for creating the life you really want and deserve.

If you worry and create anxiety then give me a call, you can change your negative thinking styles – don’t leave your life to chance!

Wallop artists - a Fine Portrait of the Kings arms Pub

Grateful members of the Wallop Artists group have presented the owners of

the Kings Arms in Lockerley with an attractive portrait of the pub at night. About six months ago, the walls of the newly refurbished pub and restaurant were offered to this talented group of artists, who have provided a changing exhibition of work for sale ever since.

As a thank you to the pub owners for their generosity, the artists recently held a competition to produce a portrait of the pub. On Monday evening (Feb. 6), the group’s Chairman, Rowena Thorne, presented owner Lucy Townsend with the winning painting which Lucy and her team had selected from all the entries. This is a night-time view, painted by group member Fiona Forbes, in which the building, lit by moonlight, offers a welcoming glow.

“The Wallop Artists have been delighted by the generosity and hospitality of Lucy and her colleagues”, said Rowena Thorne. “The pub provides a

lovely location to showcase our work and we have made a good number of sales. Each time we have changed over the works on display, we have been offered a preview evening with drinks and canapés. This is a very valuable partnership for us ... and we love their food!”

The Wallop Artists meet at the Wallops Parish Hall on a Monday afternoon for a weekly painting group, monthly demonstrations, and a series of technical workshops. It has over 70 members, and has been in existence for almost 30 years. Its membership includes well established artists and professionals, but it also welcomes enthusiastic beginners. Its prestigious Annual Exhibition in September is a popular date for art collectors.

The Kings Arms welcomes drinkers, diners, and art lovers any day of the week, and runs special functions as well. Its website is www.kingsarmsatlockerley.co.uk

TV's Sally Taylor opens cancer charity Shop inWinchester

Wessex Cancer Trust launched its new shop in Stoney Lane, Weeke,

on Monday 16th January, with a little help from BBC South Today presenter, Sally Taylor, and weather girl colleague, Alexis Green. It is thought to be the first charity shop in a Winchester suburb.

Ms Taylor, who is vice-president of the charity, joined the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Barry Lipscomb, at the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Ms Taylor said: “I’m very proud to be involved with Wessex Cancer Trust.

“I feel particularly about charities being able to raise money and then put it back into the regional economy. “What’s great about this shop here

is that whatever they raise will be put back into complementing health and cancer research in this area.”

Chris Ralph, manager of the shop, said: “The location is absolutely superb what with a doctors’ surgery, Waitrose and Boots around us which bring people to the area.

“People have come in to us saying how glad they are that we are here.”

The charity has been running for 31 years, raising around £21m in that time with the money going to support cancer sufferers and their families in the Wessex region.

recipe of the month

rIcE & cHIcKEN BaKEToPPED WITH ParmESaN & cHEDDar

An unusual family recipe that was invented by my mother who loved to cook and inspired me to love cookery. When left with the dilemma of what to do with left over roast turkey and chicken she created this filling comforting meal - The Editor

METHOD Rinse the basmati rice and add to a pan with enough water to boil. Into the water add a good quality chicken stock then bring to the boil. When the rise is cooked through strain it and set aside.

Whilst the rice is cooking get a suitable large flat bottomed baking dish and add the chicken, peanuts, chilli (if desired), raisins or sultanas and garlic. Raisins work better in this meal, but sultanas will suffice. Next, season the ingredients in the dish with ground black pepper and a pinch of ground nutmeg and one or two tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce; no imitation versions of this sauce should be used as the results are not the same. Once suitably seasoned take the rice and pour over your ingredients, stir all of the ingredients together and then level them in the dish. Next grate a healthy layer of cheddar cheese over the ingredients; cheddar should be used as it helps create a thick crust holding the ingredients together when served. Also add Parmesan to the top to add a nutty taste to the topping. Place in a hot oven, 180C, for twenty minutes or until the cheese has melted and is golden brown. For lovers of Worcestershire Sauce drizzle the top of your served portions for that added spicy hit.

You can also serve the meal with a light side salad. A favourite side salad of mine consists of: Rocket, Pine Nuts, Parmesan flakes, and reduced balsamic vinegar; it has to be a good quality balsamic vinegar. Gently fry the pine nuts for a few minutes until golden. Put the rocket into a salad bowl then drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Next sprinkle the parmesan and pine nuts over the top. A simple and tasty peppery salad.

• 500g of roasted Chicken or Turkey• 2 Cloves of garlic (grated)• 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper• A pinch of ground nutmeg• 1 Stock Cube • 1 level teaspoon of chilli flakes - reduce or remove if you are not a lover of spicy food• 50g of salted peanuts - chop finely• 1 or 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce• 50g of Raisins or Sultanas• 250g of Cheddar cheese• 50g of Parmesan cheese

SALAD• One packet of washed Rocket leaves• 1 tablespoon of reduced Balsamic Vinegar• 20g Pine Nuts• Parmesan Flakes

The children of Chilbolton Pre-school have had a busy few weeks. Despite

the cold weather the children are still able to access our wonder-ful large outside area. They have enjoyed playing on bikes, in the sand, on the static wooden train and in our lovely willow wigwam. We follow the childrens’ interests to choose our themes and daily activities. Lots of the children enjoy playing dinosaurs and they were amazed to find 3 large di-nosaur eggs in the garden! This promoted lots of lovely conversa-tion - the children are sure that Mummy dinosaur comes back to check on them when we have all gone home! They have also been interested in Goldilocks and the Three Bears and we have had the 3 Bears’ cottage set out here at Pre-school and different sized chairs, bowls, spoons and of

Spring is on its waycourse teddies! We are really looking forward to our Jubilee Tea Party on the afternoon of Wednesday 30th May and look forward to seeing many previous Pre-school pupils. Stockbridge Visits theantartic

Our great British weather is delightfully unpredictable isn’t it? I’m not sure what

the weather will be like when you read this but as I write, there’s still snow on the ground (albeit the tiny last bits which are clinging on as the temperature warms up). It was an added bonus for us though on 6th February to have a lot more than that left because, we took our Year 2/3/4 children to Antarctica! Well…almost.

We packed our kit bags, including hearty lunch boxes and went to the wilds of Oxenwood, near Hungerford for a day pretending to be Scott. We were met by Captain James and Captain Ed who prepared our troops for a day outside. Despite the freezing temperatures, children proved that they could work successfully as a team to pull their kit bags on sledges to the woods where they had to erect a tent and rescue a team mate using impromptu stretchers. I’ve never known so many ways of using 2 coats and a pair of sticks from the forest floor!

Children got a real feel for the harsh conditions of the Antarctic as temperatures didn’t reach much above 0C all day. Luckily, we returned to the centre for lunch but were soon faced with a drama re-enactment of being inside a tent in the harsh winds of an Antarctic snow storm as Captain James read some of Scott’s diary – pretty scary stuff. Our day was rounded off by a

snow challenge. The sledges children had pulled to the woods and back were lined up and ready for a final race to the South Pole. Teamwork was the name of the game and children dragged their kit bags and sledges over crevices (tyres), around icebergs (white buckets) and over mountainous icy terrain (a few bits of MDF against a tyre stack) to reach the South Pole.

In all, a fantastic day. We can’t even become close to imagining the hardships and struggles Scott and his men faced on their expeditions but our day was a great opportunity to build a team, put Science learning about friction into practice and explore history ‘in action’.

Were your school days this much fun?

As Great Britain prepares for a year of patriotic celebration,

with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics marked firmly on the calendar, Dogs in Art at Stockbridge Gallery in Hampshire, is celebrating great British icons of the four-legged kind!

‘Dog GB – A Celebration of Our British Dogs’ is a month-long exhibition featuring the works of premier canine portraiture artist Claire Eastgate and canine sculptor Rosemary Cook. This is the first time the two leading British talents have exhibited together and they are delighted to showcase the very best of our British Breeds.

Starting with private viewings for the press and invited guests on Sunday 11th and Monday 12th March, the exhibition opens to the public from Tuesday 13th March. Central to the show is the commanding ‘Team Leader’, an oil painting of the Great British Bulldog by Claire Eastgate. Measuring 33" x 31" and painted on a wood panel, this powerful image is painted in Claire’s well observed signature style where beautiful beasts are set against sumptuous

Team GB - On Four Legs!furnishings or placed in sublime landscapes.

Topping the plinths and filling the floor space at the show will be an impressive array of beautiful bronzes by the renowned animal sculptor Rosemary Cook. ‘Brahms’, a life sized Cairn Terrier, leads the collection which ranges from miniatures to life size sculptures representing the largest collection of Rosemary’s work in Europe.

Victoria Armstrong, owner and curator of Stockbridge Gallery – Dogs in Art, commented: “2012 is undoubtedly a big year for all things British and it’s highly appropriate that we join the celebrations and showcase some of the wonderful breeds from the four corners of Great Britain. All the works in the show are true classics and follow in the great British tradition of dog portraiture which began in the 18th century and went on to become hugely popular during the 19th century in the reign of my namesake, Queen Victoria”.

Stockbridge Gallery – Dogs in Art is open to the public every week from Tuesday to Saturday. For more information, phone the gallery on 01264 810142, email [email protected] or visit www.dogsinart.com.

Southampton - 'A City with a Gleaming Heart'When I talk to friends

about Southampton what I get is the

usual - docks, great shopping, cruise liners, Saints FC, IKEA, UNITY 101, the Boat Show, the University. I even get the occasional - some lovely authentic Indian sub-continent shopping with very individual quirky quality eating places, the MELA, the Nuffield Theatre and the Southampton Art Gallery.

However, I recently went round the building site which is attached to the Civic Centre – this is to be the home of the new Southampton Sea City Museum with a fascinating, moving and enormously engaging display about RMS Titanic. This ship has fascinated many for years but has an important personal link with Southampton as so many members of the crew came from the City and died when the ship sank at 2.20am on the 15th April 1912.

The Museum, slowly emerging out of the old court buildings, with a lovely modern extension, will describe the historical link between the City of Southampton, its maritime past and future, but will do this with a sensitive mix of the latest touch screen technology and poignant displays. The visitor will be taken through a series of galleries which show in enlightened detail the link between RMS Titanic and the City – the story being told through the words of those on board. This year is also the centenary of that fateful night,

with Southampton sharing in the commemorations with Belfast, New York and a few other very unlikely places. I won’t say much more about the detail, but what was wonderful to see was the quality of what will be on offer, its authenticity and absolute link to the City. The whole area around the site is being carefully refurbished which, when linked to the Art Gallery and Library, will make it a striking attraction for local people and visitors.

Around the corner, not far from the Civic Centre, what is slowly emerging is the “cultural quarter”. There are already new buildings, a plaza, an art gallery, some new shops and restaurants. Work starts later in the year on the Arts Centre thus putting the finishing touches to what, when taken together, will transform the city centre. It is the persistent leadership of so many, led by local Councillors which has made this happen. This together with the investment from the Private Sector, the Developer, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Arts Council and the City Council has also played a crucial part in this regeneration.

We can all be cynical about local government but what was clear by the end of my visit were the many new sustainable jobs being created with Culture and Heritage at the heart. Southampton Football Club’s slow “come back” now has a partner - the re-invention of the City of Southampton!

Hampshire mum

Ah the draw of potential bargains! Didn’t really need anything and yet the family Pagan, and chum of Star I, still found ourselves in the largest palace of consumptive delights in the shopping centre of local

Solent Port city.

Star I and chum obviously needed to cut loose immediately rather than run the risk of actually being seen with us in broad daylight!

Nothing for it, for the sake of a peaceful stress free excursion, but for The Husband and I to give in to the demands of Star II and head directly to the penultimate floor where the toy department is.

Happily for The Husband the men’s’ department is adjacent,“I’ll just have a quick look Sandra love, you’re ok aren’t you?”Indeed I was, happy as Larry spending an eternity gazing at Lego, Hex Bugs and cars of every variety before opting out and offering the ultimate bribe of tea and buns on the floor above.

Post caffeine fix, for us not Star II – the thought of giving any kind of stimulant is the stuff of nightmares- we decamp, at the bequest of Star II, to the kitchen department three floors below.

As we descend I get a tantalizing glimpse of the women’s department…still just think of the money I saved. Now Star II is a bit of a chef on the quiet excelling in cakes but is strangely drawn to very large knives.

A happy hour or so was spent caressing various coffee machines, food processors and heavy iron pans, well a girl can dream, while Star II begged me for a spatula and a piping bag with nozzles various.

The Husband had that ‘let’s get out of here’ look on his face and Star II, with purchases in hand, had uttered those immortal words.“Mum can we go now.”It was time then to gather the troops.

Now teenagers, being what they are, I knew I would have to arrange to meet Star I and chum by a very obvious landmark. “Meet me by the large tropical fish tank in the cosmetics department- two minutes, ok?”

The rather beautiful fish tank and its equally exotic inhabitants is the trademark of a luxurious skin care range that apparently contains an amazing ingredient derived from contingents of the ocean. Star II knew nothing of this but rather was simply enraptured by the tropical fish.“Look at these Mum, look at this blue one. LOOK!”

Being a sensitive soul, Star II was only looking, not banging on

the glass or smearing it with sticky hands, nor climbing over the counter top or sitting on the stools, no, just merely looking. There were no customers waiting to be served in fact the whole area was deserted ……until.

Suddenly, as if from nowhere, there she was. A tall lady in a white consultant’s coat; applied immaculately to her face were probably most of the products available, beautiful she may have looked, happy she certainly was not.

“This is a consultation area!” She barked and proceeded to wipe down surfaces and straighten stools.Star II was oblivious, “MUM…look at this one PLEESE”.

I noted that this season’s lip colour still softened even when one’s jaw was clenched and eyes that flashed with rage could still retain a degree of femininity dependent on where one placed the highlighter; this product was obviously marvellous! As she grew more tense I phoned Star I and chum again,“Where are you, hurry up!”

Then, and it was slightly unfortunate I will admit, my tigress gene kicked in. Actually why was she so very angry? Was looking at fish a punishable offense? Star II was not causing a problem to anyone, particularly due to the fact that at that point, there was not a client to be seen.

And so as I phoned Star I again, the words “Move away from the tank please the nasty lady doesn’t like it”, tumbled from my mouth. Not good; I retracted my claws and a confused Star II came obediently to my side.“What have I done Mum?”“Nothing my love, the lady doesn’t like you near the fish”

With a swish of her white coat, the lady vanished. As I texted frenetically to Star I a shadow fell over me. Slowly turning to my left it became apparent I was not alone.

There, in what was left of my personal space, was a security guard of Goliathan proportions. He gave me no eye contact but rather mumbled something into his headset: “Target apprehended” I imagined. I was beyond cross, clearly she had called Security! Fortunately The Husband arrived, smiled weakly at my new found, up close and personal companion, and enquired,“Who’s your friend?”Not helpful. With the arrival of Star I and chum we beat a hasty retreat.

Perfect Pagan day out: Star I had a burger, Star II got a spatula, The Husband got to ogle wide screen TVs and I’m booked on an Anger Management course.

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.
