Texas Tech also travels to TCU this Saturday before facing Kansas on Oct. 16 at home and then Kansas State on Oct. 19 in Manhattan. Texas Tech will be looking to snap a 24-match losing streak Wednesday night against the Longhorns. It is the longest losing streak among Big 12 opponents currently for the Red Raiders, who last defeated Texas on Nov. 1, 2000, in Lubbock as part of a season sweep of the Longhorns. The Longhorns enter this week ranked third in the latest AVCA top-25 poll, marking the highest ranked opponent for the Red Raiders since facing then No. 3 Texas on Nov. 14 last year in Austin. Texas swept the Red Raiders in straight sets. Texas Tech is coming off a 3-1 loss to West Virginia this past Saturday at the United Spirit Arena. The Red Raiders opened with a 26-24 victory in the opening set before letting the Mountaineers rally in the second to tie the match. West Virginia hit .242 while forcing holding Tech to a .149 percentage en route to consecutive 25-19 victories in the third and fourth sets to close the match. Texas stepped out of conference last weekend to record a 3-0 victory over LSU last Saturday after opening Big 12 play with a perfect 3-0 record following wins over TCU, Oklahoma and Baylor. Texas Tech freshman Katie Daffer will likely be making her third-consecutive start on the right side Wednesday night as she will be returning to her hometown of Austin for the first time as a Red Raider. Daffer arrived a Tech following a highly- successful prep career at nearby Austin Westlake High School. Rachel Brummitt recorded her ninth 20-dig performance already this season last Saturday against West Virginia, bump- ing the junior libero’s season total to 349 entering this week. The Plano, Texas native is now 49 digs shy of entering the top-10 in single-season history, a record she set a year ago with 510 digs. She is currently on pace to shatter that record as she ranks second in the Big 12 with a 5.29 digs per set average. TEXAS TECH AND TEXAS - THE SERIESTexas Tech and Texas will be meeting for the 86th time Wednesday night, the longest running series for the Red Raiders, who have faced the Longhorns in each season since 1975. Texas has controlled the all-time series, however, with a 74-9-2 advantage that includes a 34-2 record in matches played in Austin. The Red Raiders have not traveled to the state capital and defeated the Longhorns since pulling off a 3-1 victory on Sept. 23, 2000. Tech followed up that win with a 3-0 sweep of Texas on Nov. 1 that year, which was the program’s last victory over its in-state rival as the Red Raiders have dropped the last 24 contests in the series.

RED RAIDERS ONE OF TOP DIGGING TEAMS IN THE COUNTRYIn the midst of an injury-filled season, one thing has remained constant for the Red Raiders - their ability to dig. Led by standout libero Rachel Brummitt, Texas Tech enters this week ranked 29th in the country and second in the Big 12 Confer-ence with a 16.47 digs per set average. Brummitt has been the driving force behind Tech’s defensive success as the junior is averaging 5.29 digs per set, an average that ranks 16th nationally entering this week. Five different Red Raiders have posted double-doubles so far this season, led by Emily Ruetter’s six which matches her career high from a year ago. Tech has already totaled 13 double-doubles this year, one shy from its total from the entire 2012 season.

BRUMMITT ON PACE FOR YET ANOTHER MEMORABLE SEASONAfter such a memorable debut in scarlet and black a year ago, it may seem difficult to picture Rachel Brummitt duplicating or even surpassing her record-setting numbers from 2012. The junior is well on her way to doing that, though, as she is cur-rently on pace to surpass the 510 digs she recorded a year ago. Brummitt enters this weekend with 349 digs over 66 total sets, one fewer sets than from the 2012 season when she had 309 digs through 18 matches. She is averaging 5.29 digs per set which ranks second in the Big 12 this year and is almost a full dig higher than her average at this point a year ago. Brum-mitt has finished with 20 or more digs nine times already this year, including a season-high 29 on Sept. 7 against Eastern Washington. She has been in double digits for digs in all 18 matches this season as well. BRUMMITT’S PERFORMANCE DURING THE 2012 & 2013 SEASONS Season SP Digs Per Set 2013 Through 18 matches 66 349 5.29 2012 Through 18 matches 67 309 4.61 Through 19 matches 71 321 4.52

DAVID STARTS OFF JUNIOR YEAR IN STYLE For Breeann David, the 2013 season probably couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. The hard-hitting junior has totaled 185 kills in 14 matches this season where she has averaged 3.85 per set, the second-highest total currently in the Big 12. The Denver City, Texas native started off the year by posting 10 or more kills in each of the first six matches of the season, the longest streak to start a season since Kelly Johnson did so in the first seven matches of the 2004 season. David, who has missed four matches due to injury, is the conference leader in points per set (4.70) and ranks fourth for aces per set with 0.35 per frame. She enters this week ranked 30th nationally for points per set and 31st for kills per set as well. DAVID IN THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE & NCAA OFFENSIVE RANKINGS Category Amount Big 12 Rank NCAA Rank Total Kills 185 6th - Kills per set 3.85 2nd 56th Service aces 17 5th - Aces per set 0.35 4th 66th Points 225.5 4th - Points per set 4.70 1st 30th

WHAT A DEBUT FOR ALLEN After spending the first half of the season waiting patiently for her chance on the court, Jenna Allen has made the most of her opportunities so far since Big 12 play began Sept. 25 at Oklahoma. The Texas Tech sophomore, who missed the first 15 matches of the year due to a preseason injury, connected on 21 kills in her Red Raider debut against Oklahoma and then fol-lowed up with 17 kills last Saturday against West Virginia. She recorded double-doubles in both matches as well, totaling 15 digs against the Sooners and then 12 against the Mountaineers. Her performance against OU is considered one of the best Red Raider debuts in school history as her 21 kills marked the most for a Tech player in a Big 12 opener since Kelly Johnson also totaled 21 in 2001 against Colorado. TEXAS TECH’S JENNA ALLEN STATS FROM LAST THREE MATCHES - Her 21 kills marked the most for a Red Raider in a Big 12 opener since Kelly Johnson also had 21 in 2001. - Was her first career appearance as a Red Raider after missing the first 15 matches due to a preseason injury. - Her 21 kills was previously tied for the Big 12 high for a four-set match this season. - Followed the performance with a team-high 17 digs last Saturday against West Virginia. - Been solid defensively as well with 15 digs against the Sooners and 12 against the Mountaineers. - Is one of just three Red Raiders this year to record multiple double-doubles, joining Breeann David and Emily Ruetter. SETTING THE PIPE(R)If the start of the 2013 campaign is any indication, Aubree Piper’s senior season could be a special one. The lone senior on the Texas Tech roster, Piper, who has battled several injuries throughout her career, is Tech’s second-leading offensive player so far this year, totaling 186 kills at a 2.82 per set rate. Her presence in the middle has not just been felt offensively, though, as she has also recorded 37 blocks while adding 12 service aces. The Amarillo, Texas native has posted a team-high .276 hitting percentage that ranks just outside the top 10 in the Big 12 entering this week.

O’CANADA - SEASON TWOFor as much balance as Texas Tech has shown this year offensively, much of the credit belongs to Emily Ruetter. Tech’s first Canadian volleyball athlete since 2007 heads into this week ranked fourth in the Big 12 and 66th nationally with a 10.46 assists per set average that is a full assist more than her average from her 2012 freshman season. Ruetter has totaled 680 assists through 18 of 32 regular season matches, putting her on pace to become just the fifth Red Raider setter to record more than 1,200 assists. No Tech setter has reached the mark since Laura Grote in 2003 when she dished out 1,276 assists. Ruetter, who has also recorded eight service aces and 20 blocks, is Tech’s first Canadian-born player since current director of volleyball operations Amy Gandy (2004-07).

WRIGHT STEPS UP IN TRIP TO INCARNATE WORD, TEXAS STATE Faced with a depleted bench, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora turned to sophomore Emily Wright to fill a void on the outside as the usual defensive specialist turned into a six-rotation player in both matches against Incarnate Word and Texas State. The effort did not go unnoticed, either, as Wright recorded her first career double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs Monday against the Cardinals before coming back the next night to post a career-high 14 digs against Texas State. The Cypress, Texas native returned to being a full-time defensive specialist last week at Oklahoma.

FOUR MATCHES ADDED TO TEXAS TECH’S TELEVISION SCHEDULETexas Tech added to its 2013 television schedule earlier this month as four Big 12 matches will be broadcast through FOX Sports platforms, beginning Oct. 2 with Iowa State. The Red Raiders, who were already scheduled to face Iowa State (Oct. 30) on ESPNU as part of the Big 12 television schedule, will also face Kansas (Oct. 16), Kansas State (Nov. 6) and Oklahoma (Nov. 20) in FOX broadcasts that are part of Texas Tech’s third-tier rights agreement with the network. 2013 TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL TELEVISION SCHEDULE Date Opponent TV Oct. 2 Iowa State FOX Sports Southwest Oct. 16 Kansas FOX Sports Southwest-Plus Oct. 30 at Iowa State ESPNU Nov. 6 Kansas State FOX Sports Southwest Nov. 20 Oklahoma FOX College Sports

FLORA PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 300 ON OPENING WEEKENDTexas Tech head coach Don Flora earned his 300th career victory at the collegiate level during opening weekend when the Red Raiders dropped Grand Canyon in four sets at the Wildcat invitational. The Red Raiders are now 7-11 on the year, improv-ing Flora’s overall record to 305-105 in 13-plus seasons at both the University of La Verne in California as well as Texas Tech. Flora, arguably one of the winningest active coaches at the Division-I level, led Tech to 29 victories over his first two seasons after inheriting a program that totaled just 30 wins in the five seasons prior to his arrival. The California native currently ranks tied for fifth among Big 12 Conference coaches in career victories, trailing only Ray Bechard (Kansas), Jerritt Elliott (Texas) and Jim Barnes (Baylor) and Santiago Restrepo (Oklahoma). All four coaches have longer career tenures than Flora, who arrived in Lubbock after two seasons as an assistant at New Mexico State and 11 years as the head coach of his alma mater in La Verne where he amassed a 269-59 record (.820 winning percentage) and led the Leopards to the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship. MILLS, BRUMMITT NAMED TO WILDCAT INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMRachel Brummitt and Mikia Mills also earned a selection to the Wildcat Invitational all-tournament team after the two ju-niors helped lead the Red Raiders to a 3-1 showing in the event. Brummitt totaled a team-high 75 digs from the back row, averaging 5.36 per set which ranks third in the Big 12 after one weekend. She ended the tournament with a match-high 26 digs against host Weber State, marking the ninth time in her Tech career where she has reached the 20-dig mark. Mills, meanwhile, connected on 39 kills, second-most on the team, while adding nine digs and 11 blocks to collect her first all-tournament honor of her career. The middle blocker delivered 25 kills over the final two matches, including a career-high 13 in Tech’s four-set victory over Grand Canyon. Teammate Breeann David shared Most Valuable Player honors as well.

ENSCH MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT IN UTAHTexas Tech freshman Courtney Ensch made what seemed to be a smooth transition to collegiate volleyball at the Wildcat Invitational as she connected on 26 kills from the right side while also adding eight digs and five blocks. Ensch, who arrived at Tech from Southlake Carroll High School, had one of the most accurate performances for a Red Raider in recent memory against Grand Canyon as she recorded 12 kills off just 19 attempts. Ensch had only two hitting errors in the match for a .526 hitting percentage, which was the highest for a Red Raider since Lydia McKay totaled the same average on Sept. 14 last year against Houston Baptist. Ensch closed the weekend hitting .327 over 13 sets, the second-highest percentage on the team.

PIPER RETURNS AS TEXAS TECH’S LONE SENIORWhen Aubree Piper looks walks across the court later this season on Senior Night, she will be the only player on Tech’s 19-person roster to receive flowers and framed jersey. The four-year senior, who has started in 52 matches the past three seasons, will be Tech’s leader both on the court and in the locker room for a program that despite returning 12 letterwinners also boasts seven newcomers. Piper enters her senior season with 440 career kills to go along with 174 total blocks and a .242 career hitting percentage. She ended 2012 with a .312 hitting percentage, which ranked ninth in school history for a single season. The Amarillo, Texas native is Tech’s most experienced returner, having played in 72 career matches despite battling various injuries throughout her career.

WHAT CAN BRUMMITT DO NEXT FOR TECH?After a record-breaking inaugural season in scarlet and black, the best question pertaining to Rachel Brummitt might just be what can she do next? The junior libero shattered the Tech single-season record in 2012 with 510 digs from the back row, finishing with 62 more than previous record holder Melissa McGehee (2000). The Plano, Texas native wrapped the 2012 season ranked fourth in the Big 12 for digs per set (4.32), trailing only Kristin Hahn (Iowa State), Brianne Riley (Kansas) and Maria Fernanda (Oklahoma). A similar, if not better, performance this year would already place Brummitt near the top 10 on the Tech career chart as well as Ginger Carter currently sits in 10th place with 1,092 digs from the 1991-94 seasons. Lisa Hilgers owns the Tech career record for digs after totaling 1,583 from 1995-98 that also ranks ninth in Big 12 history entering the 2013 season as well.

THE DENVER CITY HAMMERNot shy from coining nicknames, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora has long referred to junior outside hitter Breeann David as the “Denver City Hammer.” Named for both her hometown of nearby Denver City, Texas, as well as her hard-hitting ability, David enters her junior season as one of Tech’s key offensive weapons after she led the team with a 2.77 kills per set average a year ago. David, a six-rotation players normally, totaled 213 digs in 2012 despite missing six matches due to an ankle injury that sidelined her early into Big 12 play. David, who comes from a family of Texas Tech athletes, has also posted 239 digs and 135 blocks over her first two seasons in scarlet and black. Her father, Stan David, was a standout football player for the Red Raiders and eventual 1984 NFL Draft selection by the Buffalo Bills. Her mother, Megan David (formerly McGuire), also starred on the volleyball team while at Tech where she still ranks in the top 10 in most career blocking categories. Her younger brother, Clancy David, is also a walk-on football team currently at Tech.

ALLEN EXPECTED TO BOOST RED RAIDER ATTACK ON OUTSIDELike David, Texas Tech is also expecting sophomore transfer Jenna Allen to become an immediate presence on the outside as the newcomer joined the program last spring after spending the 2012 season at South Carolina. Allen appeared in 30 matches while making nine starts for the Gamecocks where she finished fourth on the team with 122 kills while also adding a 102 digs from the back row. Allen is one of two transfers for the Red Raiders from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), join-ing Lauren Douglass who arrived this fall from Ole Miss.

HINNEBURG NAMED BIG 12 PRESEASON CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEARTexas Tech freshman Victoria Hinneburg was named the Big 12 Preseason Co-Freshman of the Year prior to the season, marking the first time a Red Raider has ever garnered the award. Hinneburg, a native of Leipzig, Germany, is just the third Red Raider to earn a conference preseason award, joining Colleen Smith (1999) and Justine Young (2010) who were both named the league’s Newcomer of the Year. One of the top international prospects in the 2013 class, Hinneburg will give Tech plenty of size and ability for the years to come as she is the tallest Red Raider listed on the roster at 6-4. Hinneburg shared the award with Kansas State’s Katie Brand.

RED RAIDERS WELCOME SEVEN NEWCOMERS TO THE ROSTERTexas Tech welcomes seven newcomers to its roster this fall with three being transfer players in Jenna Allen, Carlie Foust and Lauren Douglass. The Red Raiders also added four freshmen in Katie Daffer, Courtney Ensch, Marguerite Grubb and Victoria Hinneburg. Tech’s seven-player recruiting has been described as the most talented in Don Flora’s three-year tenure at Texas Tech. 2013 TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL NEWCOMERS Name POS YEAR Hometown Jenna Allen OH SO Lewisville, Texas Katie Daffer MB/RS FR Austin, Texas Lauren Douglass MB/RS RS FR Flower Mound, Texas Courtney Ensch RS FR Southlake, Texas Carlie Foust DS SO Amarillo, Texas Marguerite Grubb SET FR Houston, Texas Victoria Hinneburg RS/MB FR Leipzig, Germany

TECH TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH BOTH ACU AND MONTANAWhile playing opponents twice during the season is customary during Big 12 play, the Red Raiders will get to know both Abilene Christian and Montana well this year as Tech is scheduled to play both schools twice during the non-conference portion of the schedule. Tech opens its home slate next Tuesday (Sept. 3) against Abilene Christian and then travels roughly 120 miles south to face the Wildcats again on Sept. 10 in Abilene. The Red Raiders have never played two non-conference opponents twice in a season during the Big 12 era. Tech played both SMU and Grambling State twice during the 1996 and 2011 seasons, going 4-0 in those matches.

RED RAIDERS TO MAKE FIRST-EVER APPEARANCE ON ESPNThe Texas Tech volleyball program will face Iowa State in front of a national television audience on Oct. 30 as the Red Raiders and Cyclones were picked prior to the season to appear on ESPNU as part of the Big 12 Conference’s television schedule for the 2013 season. The match is part of a Big 12 double-header on the network as Baylor and Kansas will face off at 6 p.m. CT in Lawrence before the Red Raiders and Cyclones open with an 8 p.m. first serve later in the evening at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. This will be Tech’s first ever appearance on an ESPN network (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU). The Red Raiders are 20-17 all-time against the Cyclones and 10-8 when playing in Ames.

DOUGLASS TO SIT OUT 2013 SEASONRedshirt freshman Lauren Douglass will sit out the 2013 season due to NCAA transfer policy. Douglass, a native of Flower Mound, Texas, transferred to Tech from Ole Miss where she redshirted the 2012 campaign while recovering from injury. She will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2014 season.

BIG 12 CONTINUES TO BE AMONG TOP VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCESThe Big 12 will once again be one of the toughest volleyball conferences nationally this season as the league is boosted by preseason favorite and top-ranked Texas, while No. 15 Iowa State and No. 20 Kansas are also ranked in the top-25 of the AVCA preseason poll. Both Oklahoma and Kansas State received votes in the poll as well. The Big 12 has earned five or more bids to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons with Texas claiming the national title from a year ago.
