Directors Notes The Oxford English Dictionary defines “appropriate” as that which is “suitable or prop-er”. When you first heard about this show, I’m sure that the word “appropriate” did not instinctively come to mind. I don’t blame you. A show boasting the title Urinetown: The Musical with featured songs like “It’s a Privilege to Pee” and “Snuff that Girl” acted out by thirteen to nineteen year olds does not come off like a youth production of The Wiz-ard of Oz. The show satirizes rather mature concepts such as over-consumption, greed, capitalism, political revolt, anarchism, cronyism, and brutality as an instrument of power. Furthermore, as Officer Lockstock will tell you, “everyone has to use public bathrooms in order to take care of their private business. That’s the central conceit of the show!” The book-writer, Greg Kotis, initially got the idea for this show while traveling abroad in Europe where many public restrooms require tolls for their usage. In what sense could this show possibly be construed as appropriate? Although we may not live in a commu-nity where unscrupulous tyrants have outlawed private bathrooms and taken control of our only means to relieve ourselves (unless you are a European tourist), we do live in a world where over-consumption and economic disparity commonly unite middle and lower class citizens against the wealthy few who seek to regulate the world’s limited resources. In late 2011, hundreds of protesters gathered daily on Wall Street in New York City to protest issues such as the growing disparity among economic classes and corporate greed. Though the movement was largely unsuccessful in solving the economic prob-lems they so desperately sought to resolve, the “occupiers” certainly addressed them in a unique manner. When the directorial team decided on Urinetown, I latched on to the Occupy Movement as a filter for the cast to gaze through when weighing the relevance of the show’s message. I hope that by dressing the cast in modern attire, constructing a set inspired by New York City, and blocking as well as choreographing the cast with the liveliness of a twenty-first century revolution, you as an audience can also discover the relevance of this show’s message. Bertolt Brecht once said, “A man who strains himself on the stage is bound, if he is any good, to strain all the people sitting in the stalls.” This production was privileged enough to take on a bright and energetic cast with the ability to bring this piece of paro-died epic theater to life. As teenagers, they are the agents of change for tomorrow. So why is Urinetown: The Musical, a show about the dangers of long term consequences related to our own society’s future appropriate for a youth cast? I ask in return: which generation among us is the most appropriate to comment on the future consequences

of today’s actions, if not the future leaders themselves?
