Dear friends,

There’s a wonderful story of a man who was hunting in Africa. Leaving the camp one morning, the man hiked alone for several miles into the jungle where he surprised and

eventually bagged several wild crane. Buckling his catch to his belt, he headed back to camp.

At a point, however, he sensed that he was being followed. Momentarily frightened, he stopped and looked around himself. And following him at a distance was a naked, and obviously starved, adolescent boy. Upon seeing the boy and his hunger and his need, the man stopped, unbuckled his belt, and letting the cranes fall to the ground, backed off and gestured to the boy that he could take the birds.

The boy ran up to the birds but, inexplicably, refused to pick them up. He, seemingly, was still asking for something. Perplexed, the man tried with words and gestures to explain to the boy that he could take the birds. Still the boy refused to pick them up. Finally, in desperation, unable to explain what he still needed, the boy backed off from the dead birds and stood with outstretched and open arms…waiting until the man came and placed the birds in his hands. He had, despite hunger, fear, and intense need, refused to take the birds; he waited until they were given to him. Only then did he make off with them. To be a saint is never to take anything as owed, but rather, to receive everything, gratefully, as gift and to be thankful. The quality of giving effects the quality of receiving and the quality or receiving directly affects the quality of giving. Happy Thanksgiving!

Yours in Christ, Fr. Joseph Shea

9am-5pm and Sunday 8am-4pm.

New bible study on the Book of Job starting on Thursday, Nov. 21st (You are welcome to join us even if we have started already) The book of Job tells the story of a

righteous man who is overwhelmed by suffering and complains to God until God comes to speak with him. In an age where

suffering was seen as a sign of punishment for sin, Job's suffering is doubled when all his friends impugn his character as they witness his sorrows. Listen to God's Word in the midst

of pain. For enrollment and to secure a study set for Job call Dr. Neil Fanning:805-217-4300.

Study is held at St. Rose of Lima School in room 8 at 7pm on Thursday evenings. For more info call Dr. Neil Fanning at

805-217-4300 or via email: [email protected]

EVENING BIBLE STUDY

The Catholic Faith Facts Are you tired of being asked

questions about your Catholic faith from loved ones, friends or

co-workers - and NOT being able to give an answer? If this sounds like you – please

consider joining the Catholic Faith Facts Apologetics Course here at St. Rose of Lima. You will learn how to

give Biblical answers for your faith as well as the corresponding references from the Catechism. You will

gain a clearer understanding about subjects like the Mass, defending Marian doctrines, the Eucharist, Purgatory,

praying to the saints, and many more. Classes are in room 8 at 7:00pm. We will be meeting on the 2nd

Wednesday of each month. Next class: Dec. 11, 2019.

CATHOLIC FAITH FACTS

MORNING BIBLE STUDY

Join us at our Morning Bible Study at a private home. We will study, James: Pearls for Wise Living. James is one of

the most practical books of the Bible. Time: 10:00am.

Study ends on Wednesday, Dec. 4th For more information, location or to register for the study, call Judy Folster at 805-206-1957 or via email at [email protected]

When it comes to the Sacrifice of the Mass, non-Catholics will ask the question, “If the sacrifice was offered “once for all by Christ” (Hebrews 9:26-28), why do Catholics offer the same sacrifice at every Mass – especially since the Father has already accepted it? Another charge is that we re-sacrifice Jesus at every mass. This is simply a misunderstanding of the sacrifice of the Mass. Rev. 13:8 says that Christ was crucified before the foundation of the world. His is an eternal sacrifice before the Father. In God's eyes, Jesus is crucified before the foundation of the world and is ever present as a sacrifice before him. Jesus never stops mediating on our behalf. Revelation 5:6 says, “And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth.” In 1 Corinthians 11:27-29, Paul speaks to the reality of the Eucharist and the severity of the consequences to those who take this lightly: “Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. A person should examine

himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.” This directly correlates to the Bread of Life discourse in John 6, where Jesus stated in no uncertain terms: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.” The word Mass comes from the Latin, Missa, which means “to send”, “to go forth”, “to dismiss” Because the Mass represents the finished work of Christ for our very redemption, it is the ultimate prayer of the Church and the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith (CCC 1324). Many of the prayers and blessings in the Mass come directly from the Bible (Matt. 28: 19, 2 Cor. 1: 2 & 13: 13, Psalms 51:6, James 5:16, 1 John 1:19, Luke 2: 14, Rom. 8:34, John 1: 28, Eph 5:20, Rev 7:12, Gen 1, Col. 1:16, Heb 1:3, 1 Cor. 15:34, 2 Tim. 4:1, Mark 9:24, John 11: 27, Mark 9:38, John 17:9 & 20, Phil. 2:4, Chron. 29:10, Psalms 72:18-19,119:10, Luke 1: 68, Matt. 5: 23 -24, Matt. 28:26-28, Mark 14:22-25, Isa. 6: 3, Rev 4:8, Mark 14:22,24, Matt. 26: 26 -28, Luke 22: 19 – 20: 1 Cor. 11:23- 25). To deny the sacrifice of the Mass is to deny the eternal sacrifice of our Lord on our behalf. For more information, please visit us at http://www.strosesv.com/faith-facts.

DID YOU KNOW? “If you see something, say something”

“If you see something, say something” We see this warning in airports and schools, but experts say it’s also a great way for parents to think about Internet safety for their children. One of the best ways to protect children using the Internet is to actually engage with them in what they’re doing: Play the games they plan, check out their profile pages with them. Discuss online respect and rules for what can and cannot be shared. Regular conversation and monitoring helps keep children safe online.

ITALIAN CATHOLIC FEDERATION St. Rose ICF invites you, your family, and friends to a Christmas Party in the church hall on Friday, December 6th at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy appetizers, dr inks, and a delicious dinner catered by Viva La Pasta! ¿Sabia Usted?

805-501-5275.
