1.2 ACTIVITIESANDACHIEVEMENTSLESSONPRODUCTIONOverviewDuringtheyear,40newlanguageversionsofexistinglessonswerecompleted,givingatotalof910uniquelessons.Manymorelessonswereinthefinalstageofproduction,andover170translatedscriptswerewaitingtoberecorded.Mostofthesehavebeenmadeavailableonline,aswellasonDVD.Inaddition,werespondedtorequestsformore“non-interactive”versionsonourlessons;thesecanbeplayedonascreeninawaitingroomorsimilarsettingbecausetheydonotrequireinteractionfromusersforthelessontoproceed.Conversiontoanon-interactiveversionisaquickandsimpleprocess.Wedonotwidelyadvertisetheseversions;ourstrongpreferenceisfortheinteractiveversionstobeusedwhereverpossible,becausethelearningisreinforcedthroughoutthelessonandthereforewillhaveagreaterimpact,butwewillofferthemwhereappropriate.TME’s“productrange”thereforeconsistsof:
• 910interactivelessonsonDVD,• 840interactive“lighter”onlinelessons,• 630non-interactivelessonsonDVD
givingatotalofnearly2400uniqueproductstooffertopartners.
NewlessondevelopmentInthelastreportingperiodweannouncedthedevelopmentofanewlesson:“TakingCareandKeepingSafe”.ThescriptforthislessonwasdevelopedbyaretiredsocialworkerandbasedonmaterialdevelopedandtestedinschoolshereintheUK.ThisisthefirstlessonproducedinitiallyinanewformatthatreliesonbrowserratherthanDVDtechnology,soitcanbedeliveredonadisc,aflashdrive/SDcardorviadirectdownload/email.Thelessonhasbeentranslatedtoacoupleofnewlanguagesalreadyandwecontinuetotesthowthisdeliverymodelworks,asitmayhelpus“future-proof”againstthedeclineofDVDtechnology.Weareinvolvedinconversationswithanumberofpartnersregardingthedevelopmentofothernewlessonsonacommissionbasis.Ideallywewillusethecreationofnewlessonsasanopportunitytocollaborateandtosourcefunding,butforthetime-beingwewilllimitthistolessonsthatfitwithinoneofourexistingthematicareas(health,safeliving,healthyenvironmentetc)orareotherwisealignedwiththeSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs)NewlanguagesandrecordingsDuringtheperiodwecontinuedtoworkonthecreationoflessonsforSierraLeoneandLesotho,fundedbytheIsleofManInternationalDevelopmentCommittee.Localchallengeshaveagainimpededthiswork,forexampledelaysduetoelectionsandpoorlocalinfrastructure.WehavealsobegunworktotranslateourlessonsintoPashtoandDariinordertomakethemavailableinAfghanistanforthefirsttime,astheresultofaspecificfundraisingproject.ThisworkwasundertakenattherequestofalocalpartnerinKabul,whoisfullyengagedwiththework,deliveringtranslationsandveryenthusiasticaboutthepotentialtodistributelessonsin-country.IMAGE:partnersinKabulplantranslationanddistributionoflessons.

WhereverpossibleweworkwithvolunteerswhoareproficientinEnglishaswellastheirmother-tonguetotranslateandrecordscripts.WehavecontinuedtomakeuseoflinkswithtwolocalUniversities(WarwickandCoventry)wheretherearecohortsofoverseasstudents,manyofwhomarewillingtogiveafewhoursoftheirtimetohelp.Inadditionwehaveactivelybeenexploringothermethodsofsourcingrecordings,usingdevelopmentsintechnologyandconnectivitytoenablevolunteerstorecordwherevertheyare.Thiscancauseadditionalchallengesintheproductionprocessthough,wheretherequirementsfortheworkhavenotbeenfullyunderstoodbythevolunteer,buttheseareallusefullearningopportunities.IMAGE:recruitingvolunteersatCoventryUniversityStudentUnionVolunteerFair.
ProductionwithinAfricaAspreviouslyreported,TMEnowhasasmallbuteffectiveproductionunitinNairobi,Kenya.Severalnewlessonshavenowbeencreatedin-countryandwewillcontinuetosupportthisteamandworkwiththemtoexpandifpossible.Theyarealsofacilitatinglocalrecordingsinadditiontotheworktheyarealreadyundertaking.LESSONDISTRIBUTIONOverviewTheprimarymethodoflessondeliveryisstilltheDVDversion.PotentialpartnersareencouragedtorequesttheDVDsthattheyneedfromourwebsite,andtomakeacontributiontocoverproductioncosts,iftheyareable.Itremainsafundamentalprinciplethatourlife-savingmaterialsshouldbefreetoallwhoneedthem,butwerecognisethatitisnotsustainabletosendthemalloutatourowncost,sowewillcontinuetoexploresocialenterprisemodelstoseehowwecanmoreeffectivelyfundandsubsidisethiswork.Thepartnersthatweworkwithareaddressingawidespectrumofneedsacrossahugegeographicalarea.Theusualmodelisthatthelessonsareusedinthecontextofanexistingproject,whichwillbeaddressingoneormoreoftheSDGs*,butsometimespartnersaredesigningprojectsspecificallytoincorporateourlessonsbecausetheyseethevalueandimpactthattheselessonsaddtothelocalcommunity.*SustainableDevelopmentGoalsaddressedbyTME’slessonsinclude:NoPovertyZerohungerGoodhealth&well-beingGenderEqualityCleanWater&SanitationAffordable&CleanEnergyReducedinequalities

UseofsocialmediaandtechnologyMostDVDrequestscomeviaourwebsite.DuringtheperiodwewereagainabletomakeuseofaGoogleAdwordsgrantwhichenabledustomakeourresourcesmoreeasilysearchable,andwecontinuetoseeknewwaystopromotethewebsiteitself.Inthereportingperiod,wereceivedover3.56millionimpressions,fromadsworthover$87K.Thechallengeisinfindingtherightkeywordstogenerateappropriatesitevisitors,andtoconvertthesetoclicksandDVDrequests,andtothisendwearecontinuingtodevelopandimproveourwebsiteandAdwords,whereverpossibleworkingwithskilledvolunteersinordertokeepthecostofthisaslowaspossible.Wealsocontinuetousesocialmedia,primarilyTwitterandFacebook,toseekoutandengagewithnewpotentialnetworksandpartners.Thenumberoffollowersontheseplatformscontinuestogrowsteadilywithoutbecomingunmanageable.WealsorunacoupleofgroupsonFacebookfortranslatorsandforpartners,asawayforourmanypartnerstofeeltheyarepartofawidernetwork,andtoenablethemtosharelearningandideaswitheachother.Ourwebsiteisalsoadeliveryplatformforouronlinelessons.Inthereportingperiodtherehasbeenaconcertedefforttoincreasetheproportionofthelessonsavailableonline,andbytheendoftheperiodover840lessonswereavailabletoviewonline.Thisrepresentsmorethan90%ofourentireportfolioandputsusinamuchbetterpositiontoactivelypromotetheselessonsandusethemasatoolinthemselves,thoughitmustbenotedthesearedesignedtobeviewedincountrieswithlowbandwidth/poorconnectivityandthustheyhavelow-resolutionimagesandgraphics,butallthefunctionalityoftheDVD.DVDdistributionTherewasanotablefallinthenumberofDVDssentoutduringthereportingperiod,comparedtopreviousyears,with6859DVDsbeingdistributed(comparedtoover30,000in16-17).Itshouldhoweverbenotedthat16-17wasanunusuallybusyyearofdistribution,andthatmanyofthelessonssentbyustopartnersinthatperiodwillhavebeenusedrepeatedlyduring17-18.Thisishoweverareminderthatwemustcontinuetoengagewithotherpartnersratherthanthoseincountriesforwhichwehavefunding,andunderlinesthat17-18hadmanychallengesanddistractions.IMAGE:OneWorldLinkpartnersshowlessonsatahospitalinBo,SierraLeoneCountrieswhereourlessonswereusedin2017-18include:AlbaniaBelarusBrazilBurundiCambodiaDRCEthiopiaFrance

OngoingfundedprojectsDuringthisperiodwecontinuedtoworkinparticulargeographicalareaswiththesupportofourfunder,IslefoManInternationalDevelopmentCommittee.ThishasresultedinverylargenumbersofpeopleviewingourDVDsinRwandaandBurundiinparticular,thankstothehardworkanddedicationoflocalpartners.SincethestartoftheprojectinRwanda,morethanonemillionpeople(1,237,457,roughly10%oftheenitrepopulation)haveseenoneofTME’sDVDsinKinyarwanda1.3 MEASURINGIMPACTWearealwayslookingtogatherdataontheuseofourlessons,whetheritisqualitativeorquantitative,andtodeliverimpactinahighlycost-effectivemanner.OurestimateisthateachDVDwesendoutcostsjust£3.50(inclusiveofalldevelopment,translation,production,marketing,anddistributioncosts)andthateachDVDwillbeviewedbybetween180and200individualsinitslifetime,onaverage.BecauseofthelownumbersoflessonsdistributedonDVDthisyearthecostperviewinginthisperiodwillbehigherthannormalbutthisismitigatedbythenumbersofDVDssentoutinpreviousyearsthatweknowarestillbeingusedacrossawiderangeofsettings.Thesenumbers,though,onlytellhalfthestory.Theword-of-mouthevidenceandnumericaldatathatwecontinuetoreceivefrompartnerstellsofentirecommunitiestransformedbytheknowledgetheyhavereceivedfromthelessons.Weknowthatourproductishighlyscalable,andthatmanygrassrootspartnersareabletoworkmoreeffectivelytowardstheirownprogrammegoals,includingtheSDGsbecauseofourlessons.Gatheringfeedbackanddataisakeypartofourstrategy,asthequestionnairesandnumberswereceiveproveagainthatthelessonsarelife-changing,aswellasprovidingfurtherevidencetosupportfuturefundingapplications.IMAGE:directfeedback,deliveredtoourFacebookpage,byourlocalpartnerinDemocraticRepublicofCongo.

1.4 RAISINGPROFILEANDFUNDSFundraisingoverviewWecontinuetoapplytorelevantgrantawardingtrustsastimeandopportunityallow,toothergrant-makingbodiessuchastheIsleofManInternationalDevelopmentCommittee,andtoraisefundsfromindividuals,groupssuchaschurchesandrotaryclubs,andbusinesses.Anadditionalteammemberhasbeenemployedwithfundraisingasoneoftheirkeyroles,thishasalreadyresultedingrantsfromMichaelCornishCharitableTrustandSMBCharitableTrust.WeparticipatedforthefirsttimeintheBigGiveChristmasChallenge,amatchedfundingscheme,whichallowedustoraisemoneytomakeourlessonsavailableforAfghanistan.Theresultswereencouraging,withanumberoffirst-timedonorsandsignificantdonationsfromotherlongtermsupporters.IMAGE:weproducedanumberofgraphicsforuseonlinetopromoteourBigGiveAppeal.AneventattheHouseofLords,followingonfromasimilarreceptionfouryearsago,waswellattendedwithsomeveryencouragingresponses,includinggenerousdonationsfromFenergoandfromGreenEarthrecycling.SocialEnterpriseModelAlthoughitremainsapointofprincipalthatthelessonsshouldbefreeatthepointofdelivery,wearecontinuingtoinvestigatehowwecanmakeourbusinessmodelmoresustainable.Ouraimisthatthecostofeverylessonwesendoutiscovered,eitherbythepartner,agrant,byasponsororanothersubsidy.Thisrequiresashiftinthinkingandwillrelyonusbeingabletodemonstratethevalueandimpactoftheproductsavailable,whichwebelievefaroutweighsthecost.SocialmediaWecontinuetomakeuseofsocialmediachannels(Facebook,TwitterandInstagram)topromoteourprojects,raiseawarenessofourwork,directpeopletoourwebsiteandtosharenewsandlearning.Facebookgroupshavebeencreatedforlocalpartnersandfortranslatorswheretheycanfeelpartofawidernetwork,sharelearning,ideasandexperience,anditisexcitingtoseehowpartnersengagewithusandeachotherthroughthese.

1.5 STAFFINGandCOMPLIANCEInthelastperiodwereportedonplanstoincreasethenumberofstaffinordertoworktowardsfuturegrowth.Thisplanhasnowbeenimplemented,withtwoadditionalsalariedteammembersjoiningTMEsothatthenumberofpaidhoursworkedperweekhasincreasedforthefirsttimeinseveralyearsandenablingastrongerfocusonfundraisinganddevelopment,withtheaimofengagingwithmorepartners,acrossthespectrumandmakingourworkmoresustainable.Wecontinuetoworkwithanumberofdedicatedandcommittedregularvolunteerswhocarryoutsomeoftheproductionroleswithintheorganization,andprovidevaluablesupportinfinance.Theseareinadditiontothemoreoccasional,butequallyvaluedvolunteerswhoworkontranslationsandrecordings.Wecontinuetoreviewourpoliciesandproceduresandseektoprovideallourvolunteers,regularandoccasional,andourstaffwiththebestsupportwecanoffer.SafeguardingSafeguardingisahighpriorityforus,asitsitsalongsideourcoreobjectiveofenablingallpeopletoliveahealthierandsaferlife.Whilewehavepoliciesinplacetocoverourownoffice,ensuringthatallourbeneficiariesandpartnersareprotectedisaverydifferentproposition.WeseektoinvolveourpartnersinSafeguarding,andareworkingtodeveloppoliciesthatwillhelpthemtoreporttous,andlocallywhereappropriateif,forexample,anydisclosuresaremadeduringameetingwhereTME’sDVDsarebeingviewed.Therewerenosafeguardingconcernsraisedintheperiodcoveredbythisreport.GDPRTMEhasbeenworkingtowardstheimplementationoftheGeneralDataProtectionRegulationinMay2018,andseekingtoensurethatpoliciesandproceduresareuptodate.

2.0 CORPORATEGOVERNANCEREPORT2.1 STRUCTURE,GOVERNANCEANDMANAGEMENTThecharityisgovernedbythedirectorswhomeetfourtimeseachyear,includingastrategicplanningaway-dayearlyinthecalendaryearandAnnualGeneralMeeting,generallyheldinJune.Thetrustdeedallowsforupto10directorstobeappointed.Directorsserveuntiltheyresignorcomeupforre-election.NewdirectorsarenominatedbyexistingmembersoftheBoardandareappointedwheretheyhavethenecessaryskillstocontributetothecharity’smanagementanddevelopment.Newdirectorsareprovidedwithinformationthattheyneedtofulfilltheirroles,includinginformationabouttheroleofdirectorsandcharitylaw.Oftheexistingdirectors,threehavebeendirectorssincetheinceptionofthecharityintheyear2000.InSeptember2017AndrewCroftresignedfromhisroleasdirectorofTME.Thedirectorsareresponsibleforappointingstaff,anddelegatedaytodaymanagementresponsibilitytotheexecutivedirector.Attheendof2017/18therewerefourpaidstaff,theexecutivedirector,working35hoursaweek,afulltimedeputydirectorwhoisbasedinLondon,anofficemanagerandtheproductionco-ordinator,bothworking20hoursaweek.Thecompanyalsohasanaccountsadministratorworking1dayeachweek(voluntary)andaself-employedcompanysecretary.Thecharitybenefitsfromtheassistanceofunpaidassociateswhoarealsoappointedbythedirectorsbutaremanagedbythestaff.ThecharityhasitsmainofficeinLeamingtonSpainWarwickshire,withsupportingactivitiesbeingcarriedoutattheChairman’shouseinSussexandatthehomeofoneofourTrusteesinFrance.NoremunerationispaidfortheuseoftheChairman’sortrustee’sfacilities.The“Associates”compriseself-fundedpeoplewhoassisteitherwithafunctionintheorganisationoraparticulartaskinordertohelpusfulfillourobjectives.Associatesareappointedbythedirectorsonthebasisofanapplicationformandtherecommendationoftheexecutivedirector.TheexecutivedirectorisresponsibleforallocatingdutiestoandsupervisingtheactivitiesoftheAssociates.ThecorebusinessofthecharityisinproducinginteractivemultilingualaudiovisuallessonsonDVDanddigitaldownloadforthebenefitofpeopleinthedevelopingworld.Inadditionthecharityformslinkswithotherorganisationsandindividualsoverseastodistributeandimplementontheground.Thecharityhasnooverseasstaffmembersbutsimplylinkstoexistingcommunitygroupsandnetworksinthecountriesconcerned.2.2 RISKMANAGEMENTThedirectors,inconjunctionwiththeexecutivedirector,havesoughttoidentifyandreviewthemajorrisks,strategic,financialandoperational,towhichTMEisexposed,giventheenvironmentinwhichitoperates.InthelastreportitwasmentionedthattheTMEboardwereconsideringaproposalforamergerwithanotherfoundationwhichshouldenabletheorganisationtobecomemorestableandsustainable,infinancialterms.Inthereportingperiod,furtherdiscussionshavetakenplace,bothBoardshaveagreedinprincipaltothemergerandthebusinesscaseisbeingpreparedandduediligenceundertaken"Thedirectorsalsoconsiderbranddilutionorprogrammefailuremajorreputationalrisks.

ThisillustrateshowtheprincipalactivitiesofThareMachiEducationproducebenefit.CreatingacompletelynewtopicinEnglishinvolveswritingscripts,selectingimagesandvideotoaccompanythescriptsandproducingalessonthatrunsforbetween20and30minutes.TMEhascreatedatemplatebasedproductionsystemthatallowsverycosteffectiveconversionofanEnglishlessonintoanotherlanguage,allowingallcommunitiestobenefitfromthelearning,whatevertheirlevelofliteracy.Thisallowsmultipleversionsofalessontobemadeinmanyotherlanguages.

Duringtheperiodofthisreport,thelibraryoflessonsreached910,spreadingacrossmorethan60languages.Thelessonsarethenmadeavailabletoindividualsandorganisationsworkingatgrassrootslevelallovertheworld.Inaddition,averylargeproportionofthelessonsareavailableonourwebsiteandcanbeaccessedinstantlyfromanywhereintheworldwithareliableinternetconnection.ThisillustrateshowtheprincipalactivitiesofThareMachiEducationdeliverbenefittothepublic.3.4 PUBLICBENEFITIncarryingouttheirduties,theTrusteeshavegivendueregardtoguidancegivenbytheUnitedKingdomCharityCommissiononpublicbenefit.3.5 RESULTSActivitylevelshavebeenhighthisyear,withverygoodnumbersofDVDviewings,achievedatanencouragingprice-per-viewing,andthroughTMEIOMfundingthenextyearswillseethisworkcontinuingtogrow.Aproportionofstaffcostshasbeenallocatedtodirectcosts,reflectingthecostsofbook-keepingplus15%oftheDirector’scoststocovertimespentonadministration.ThefiguresgivelittleinsightintothehugeamountofsupportTMEreceivesfromitsbandofloyalAssociates.Fundsreceivedtotalled£60,157whilstfundsexpendedtotalled£100,922,anetlossof£40,765,buttheorganizationhadinhand£88,087carriedforwardfromthepreviousyear.£47,322wascarriedforwardforuseduring2018/19andbeyond.
