Third Sunday of Easter May 5, 2019

“I am going fishing.” What an announcement! If asked who made it, and not told it was a Bible quote, we might guess “Grandpa” or “Uncle Fred,” or admit, “I said that last summer!” But it is a Bible quote, from today’s Gospel. The person who said it also once declared, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Yes, it’s Peter! So today’s an-nouncement seems quite the comedown. Last Sunday Je-sus said, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” But Peter seems determined to return to his pre-apostolic occupation, until Jesus intervenes, making Peter’s later announcement deeper, “Lord, you know that I love you,” and Peter’s apostolic calling clearer, “Tend my sheep.” Peter does so. Acts presents the consequences: Peter de-clares, “We must obey God rather than men.” As Revela-tion proclaims, “Worthy is the Lamb”—to receive Peter’s

lifelong service, and ours.

In the Gospel, we see a number of Jesus’ disciples returning to their old profession: fishing. It is noteworthy that they go out at night, and that they catch nothing. Earlier in John’s Gospel, Jesus told the disciples, “Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John 9:4–5). That morning, at dawn, they did not realize that it was “the light of the world” standing on the shore. They only recognized him once they realized that he had led them to a catch of more fish than they could handle.

The religious authorities in the first reading wanted to keep the people of Jerusalem in the dark about Jesus. Peter identifies with them as believers in God (“the God of our an-cestors”), but then he stands up to them, accusing them of murder (“you had him killed” [Acts 5:30]). The authorities ordered them to stop preaching in Jesus’ name, but they did not prosecute them. So in the end the apostles—and many others—chose to obey God and continue teaching and preaching in the name of the Risen Lord.

Earlier in John’s Gospel, Jesus portrays himself as the Good Shepherd, willing to lay down his life for his sheep. Here in the final chapter of his Gospel, Jesus tells Pe-ter that he will now be the one to shepherd his flock. Peter will need to tend and feed his sheep. Also like Jesus, Peter will end up sacrificing his life for his sheep.

“Voy a pescar”.

“Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise”

Jeremiah’s 17:14

Being sick is one of the most testing times for both yourself and for your connection with God. And the state, as it differs in degree from one individual to the other is usu-ally troubling. Therefore, recognition of His power and consequentially the fact that

your state of weakness should be minor to you is one relief that you deserve to know and acknowledge.

Heavenly Lord, we need Your divine intervention

in our lives. We need You to empower our bodies

with Your holy presence, and Your arms envelop our minds

to soothe this pain.

We shall not buckle under the strain and when it’s a new day,

our healed body will be a representation of Your power.

Thank You, Your holiness for your attention to our lives,

In Christ’s name, Amen.

God reveals His perfect and infinite love for us most visibly in His Son, Jesus Christ. A steward makes God’s love visible by imitating Jesus. As the United States Bish-ops wrote in their Pastoral Letter, “Stewardship is the Response of the Disciple to God’s unconditional love for us”. Stewards bask in the wonder and awe of God’s Love. The more deeply one grows in love for God, the more one grows in heart to see stewardship as a way of life. Stewards see everything good as gifts received from God and they respond in gratitude with the gift of self. (Introduction, Stewardship: A Grateful Response to God’s Love, Office of Stewardship, Diocese of Wichita, 2004).

WORDS AND DEEDS—When people hear us speak God’s word, they marvel at its beauty and power; when

they see what little impact it has on our daily lives, they laugh and poke fun at us.
