First of all, congratulations to all of our winners. Winning an ADDY Award® at the district level is a testament to your creativity. I am sure we will see many at the national awards show in Las Vegas. Being part of the judging this year was a great experience. We saw creative from sea to shining...well...gulf. Being able to laugh, cry and sometimes grimace at the entries, even in the wee hours of the morning, made for some memories I will never forget.
None of this would be possible without the local clubs, the leadership and vision of each local president, and the local ADDY chairs and their team of volunteers, who spend countless hours to make every gala memorable. It is the effort of all the volunteers that make our awards so special. That work makes our awards show the greatest advertising show on Earth. Mark CarlsonSenior Creative Director, US Marketing, McDonald’s Corporation
Mr. Carlson is a Graduate of the College of
Design at Iowa State University. He worked
his way from graphic designer to copywriter,
producer, director, and fi nally Creative Director,
working for such advertisers as NAPA Auto
Parts, Chevrolet, Firestone, and McDonald’s.
In 1998, he joined McDonald’s Corporation’s
world headquarters in Oak Brook, IL, and
works with dozens of agencies in the
development and approval of creative for all
media. Mark has won numerous local and

Tom Christmann is one of the most respected

HANDThe team resized mechanical designer Steve Wood’s Flexy-Hand prosthetic and calibrated it to function safely for a young boy. The 3-D printed pieces include a palm and fingers made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic resin and hinges created with NinjaFlex thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). Kevlar cords are strung through the fingers and palm and into the forearm, where they are tied to a servomotor that controls the opening and closing of the hand as queued by a sensor on Alex’s bicep that reads electrical impulses.
FOREARMA natural place to house the electronics, battery and servomotor, fitting these components into a tight space proved a difficult design challenge, requiring eight iterations to achieve the resulting compartment that offers easy accessibility for maintenance and charging.
ELBOWThe elbow is a socket for Alex’s upper arm that provides him adequate leverage to move the prosthetic without a great deal of effort. A Velcro strap secures his arm in the socket. To increase comfort, the team suggested using a diabetic sock that enables Alex to move his arm while minimizing skin abrasions.
HARNESSTo distribute the weight of the prosthetic across Alex’s upper body, the team initially selected a neoprene shoulder brace that proved too complicated and provided too little support. Alex’s mother found a more robust and supportive option online that became the eventual solution.
CONTROLSMost mechanical prosthetics use tension created by bending the elbow or wrist to control a grasping hand, but since Alex doesn’t have either, the team chose an electromyography (EMG) sensor. The EMG sensor measures the voltage of his muscles with three electrodes when he flexes. One electrode is placed on top of his bicep, another on the inside of his arm and a third (the ground) on his back. Learning which muscles would trigger the hand was a trial-and-error process of moving the electrodes until the controls worked properly.

To pull the fingers closed, the team first tried monofilament fishing line,
but it stretched out from use over time. Kevlar cord proved to be a stronger solution.
As Alex grows, the elbow, which takes four hours to 3-D print, will be the most
frequently resized component.
The elbow used in the prosthetic is the fourth version attempted, and the team
is working on a flexible design that will give Alex even more freedom of movement.

In 2012, a group of creative and passionate students launched a new forum of both fashion and diversity. They called themselves Diverse World Fashion, and they strived to create a platform to celebrate the diversity found on campus and
around the world. Now, I am attempting to not only continue that original vision, but also make it a staple among the many publications in Tallahassee. This magazine was meant to be “an outlet for students of Tallahassee Universities to realize their creativity and utilize it in a productive manner” as stated by our founder Emmanuel Sanchez-Monsalve.
I personally realized my love for fashion while working as an intern in New York for HUGO BOSS. I brought that Northeastern mentality back to the South a year later to spread fashion and creativity. Being mentored by the last DWF Editor-in-Chief, Emily Maria Wright, I was able to fine tune my fashion skills and expand on the knowledge already instilled in me. Along with my Managing Editor, Kat Ward, we worked hard to bring you a fashion milestone.
This Fall issue had no distinct theme. I wanted to step back and showcase all facets of fashion that are relevant to us as “millennials”. With the help of a talented team, we were able to bring this premier fashion magazine to campus. Women’s Fashion directors Hokulani Gepp and Robyn Mowatt bring a
distinct take on both wild and refined fashion trends. Along with the very dapper Lamont Howard, we were able to bring a new creative energy to our men’s editorial pieces. Our writers brought content that stirred both emotions and controversy. With the article “Men Still Run Women’s Wear” Katrina Blanco highlights the connection between fashionable women and the men who dress them, and we remember a fashion pioneer of our time with Frank Ponce’s homage to the late, great Joan Rivers. Last but not least, my Writing/Website Director, Kayla Goldstein, made a huge impact in the editing of all content and overall writing direction for the magazine.
I am thoroughly grateful and proud to showcase the fifth issue of Diverse World Fashion Magazine. Not only did we put all our energy and time into this issue, but also our hearts and souls are in each page. I hope you enjoy this latest issue and that you are excited and inspired.

Branding for the fictional band Juicebox. This two-person musical comedy
group consists of Charlie Stagner and Ingrid Norman, two British singer /
songwriter comedians that tour the world singing and performing acoustic
acts. The content is known to be sarcastic, witty and very dry. Ingrid and
Charlie were friends (and sometimes more than friends) in college who
would commonly be found at parties playing the guitar and creating drunk
improv songs together. The band gained much of their fame from youtube
videos of them singing together in Charlie’s living room.
