President’s MessageDear Members,
Here we are at the start of a New Year getting ready for our 22nd Annual Bookand Author event, which will take place on February 27, with the BookmarkCocktail party on February 26. Please contact Merrill Kalman if you wish towork on this premier event. In addition to chairing the event, Merrill is theperson who scours book events all over the country to secure our notedauthors. Our chapter wound down December with a lovely Chanukah party at thebeautiful home of Dorry and Harry Sunenshine. I was happy to see many newmembers and close friends. It was a festive occasion and it was great tomingle with such terrific people. The BNC Executive board hosted a meeting attended by BNC Executive
Director Janice Fineman and BNC National Staffer Lorriane Sparrow. They explained the new initiativeto us, Sustaining the Mind: Scientific Research and Scholarships. In my last column I mentioned my friend who has Parkinson's disease, and recently Brandeisresearchers identified the structure of Parkinson's Protein, which may help one day in providing treatmentfor this incurable disease. This month our chapter sponsors the University on Wheels, with Brandeis University faculty member,Michael Doonan, PhD who will speak on the state of healthcare today. Nancy Elkins and Ronda Kottle, the chairs of this event, will nourish your body with a delicious breakfast catered by Simply Scrumptious.Almost every day I get notice from Irene Lubin of a new member who has joined our chapter. Make surethe men in your life know about our new Men's Group. Please let our membership chairs Joyce Gordonand Kathleen Witkin know of potential members.Last month, the Art Study group was hosted by Scottsdale Gallery owner Victor Ostrovsky. As a resultof the visit, Mr. Ostrovsky made a generous donation of 40% of the proceeds from sales to our art lovers. This month marks the beginning of our email only bulletin, except for those who paid $12 to continue toreceive the printed version. The funds saved will help sustain our commitment to Brandeis University.Have a Happy and Healthy New Year,

January, 2012 Brandeis National Committee - Phoenix Chapter 10
Brandeis Student AmbassadorJake Cohen
Dear Ms. Simon and the Phoenix Chapter,
Hello, my name is Jake Cohen and I am a first-year here at BrandeisUniversity. I’m from Central Phoenix, and I am very excited to have theopportunity to connect with your Chapter. I’ve really enjoyed being at Brandeisso far.I am planning to major in physics, and I very much enjoy the unique style ofeducation I receive at Brandeis. Not only does the material we cover in classinterest me, but I feel that the interactions I have with my professors, teaching assistants, and fellowclassmates is different from what is typically found at most universities. Especially when we work collectivelywith classmates to solve physic problems, I feel as though the learning environment is more collaborative andless cutthroat; the students care less about their grades and more about developing a stronger understandingof the material and the process of learning physics. I also try to have dinner with my fellow classmates afterrecitation. During this time, we discuss our assignment and we bond over the homework, which can be just ashelpful as the class itself.Aside from my regular science classes, I supplement my physics education with several humanities classes.Currently, I am taking University Writing Seminar, a First Year Seminar on Darwin's On the Origin of Species, and the introductory course on Psychology. None of these classes are required for my major, but becauseBrandeis is a liberal arts university I have the opportunity to create a broader wealth of knowledge to drawfrom for my future experiences.Along with my courses, I take part in a variety of extracurricular activities. I am a member of theBrandeis-Wellesley Orchestra. I practice cooking for my dorm-mates in the residence hall kitchen. Overall, Ihave tried a variety of other clubs on campus so that I can discover new interests. As a result of thisexploration, I have taken salsa dancing lessons, Krav Maga self-defense classes, and Zumba classes. Also, thanks to the resources and information the school provided me, I successfully applied for a well sought-aftertrip to Israel, which I will be taking over winter break. Even with all these activities to fill up my time, I manageto spend time with my friends and make life-long memories with people from all parts of the world. As you can see from all my experiences at Brandeis, not only does Brandeis provide me with classes andactivities, but it also supports and encourages me to explore myself and earn a truly deep liberal artseducation. I am glad to be a part of the Brandeis community because I know that when my four years areover, my well-rounded education will provide me with something unique and special, and something that onlyBrandeis could have offered me. I could go on writing, but I would rather hear from you and about yourinvolvement in the Brandeis community. I hope to establish as strong a relationship with you as you have donewith the Brandeis community.
Sincerely, Jake Cohen
