If you are a first-time guest, please complete a guest card from a pew pocket or Friendship Register and drop it in the offering plate so that we may get acquainted with you. Also, text “Explore” to 816-355-4736. We would like to communicate with you via text and email with some brief informational messages over the next few weeks.
Please see an usher if you’d like a listening aid.
Each Sunday in the Welcome Center (just inside the Kansas Street entrance on Level 1), our Hospitality Team is waiting to help you get connected. This may include finding a Bible study class, showing you where children and student ministries meet, or sharing the day’s activities and schedule. You may also enjoy a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center’s coffee bar and get to know others at Second.
Your entire family is welcome here! Children’s worship bags filled with books and activities are available at the Sanctuary entrances. If you’d like an alternative for your children, childcare for birth through Pre-K is available on Level 2 at any point in the service. Our Welcome Center is also available for those with restless infants, and you can view the service on a monitor there.
In addition to placing your offering in the offering plate, you can give online at 2bcliberty.org/give or via your smartphone by scanning this QR code.
We have “online giving” cards in the pew rack that you can place in the offering plate to represent your gift if you choose.

Take a moment to prepare
your heart for worship…
We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.
— Martin Luther King, Jr.
To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.

Forgiveness is the final form of love.

Georg Neumark lived in 17th-century Germany during a time of war, plague, and famine. In spite of these tragedies, he could write, “If You Will Only Let God Guide you.” We know this and other German hymns through the work of Catherine Winkworth, the brilliant translator of German hymn and theological treatises.

A NOTE FROM PASTOR JASON
Second Baptist Church has always been a church on mission, and that is
especially evident during the summer months as we send so many of our fellow
2BCers out to serve (and we serve our community here at home through VBS
and Masterpiece! Arts Camp.) May these words from Jordan Groves, one of our
own summer missionaries in South Dakota, edify you in your faith and inspire
you in your prayer life this month.
Jason
Jason Edwards, Senior Pastor
From Jordan Groves in Bridger, South Dakota
On my way out of the school today, Coltyn ran up to me before he boarded the bus and extended his
hand. He didn't say anything. He just shook my hand. He had already thanked me earlier in the
afternoon for working on math with him the entire morning. He is trying to catch up on some credits
he has missed over the years. He has fallen severely behind on concepts that he should have learned
by now. And like many young people who fall behind in math, I have a feeling that he has lost hope in
ever understanding some of those concepts.
I wonder if anyone has had the time or patience to sit down with him and reteach the concept. A
regular math teacher wouldn't. They have an entire class to worry about and attend to. And if he had
already given up hope, he had probably already given up effort, which makes his teachers lose patience.
(I should know. I fight that battle regularly in my own classroom.)
But I had nothing better to do. In fact, that's what I had come to do. It's easier to be patient when I
don't have to be there. When he is not my student who has disregarded my teaching for months or
years. So we sat there for several hours working on math concepts. He made a lot of progress, and
obviously recognized his accomplishment. His handshake said it all.
After spending the first week in Bridger dealing with issues like the electricity not working, the water
being turned off, and a building in desperate need of a deep cleaning, and after a second week waiting
(thankfully with our youth group present for most of it) for a state background check to be cleared, it
was satisfying to finally work with the students in summer school. Emmy Gregory and Elliott Yoakum
got to work together with 5th and 6th graders, who seemed to really enjoy them. One of the
boys really wanted them to come on the field trip with him tomorrow, and was very excited to see
them at a community meal in Red Scaffold this evening. They have also made quick friends with the
young teacher, who seems to greatly appreciate their help. I have enjoyed working with some of the
high school students doing credit recovery and the regular high school class that includes some of our
young friends from Bridger.
I am glad that we are finally able to fall into a rhythm of summer school. We look forward to working
with the students and developing relationships both new and old.
JULY 2016 MONTHLY
WEDNESDAY NIGHT MEALS BEGIN
AUG. 24: WE’D LOVE TO BRING BACK
COOKING TEAMS!
Again this fall through spring 2017, we will offer a
meal on Wednesday nights from 5:45-6:30 p.m. Two
years ago, we had Cooking Teams that volunteered
each Wednesday to prepare delicious meals. Last
year, with fewer groups involved, we supplemented
with meals from HyVee. People really enjoyed the
variety we had two years ago, and have asked for the
groups to return each week. This is where you come
in!
From Aug. 24 to May 10 we will have 34 Wednesday
meals. Would you be willing to form a team and
provide just three meals during that time? That’s all.
People enjoy eating together each week, and the
groups have enhanced the entire Wednesday night
experience.
Currently, there is a steady dishwashing and final
cleanup crew each week to take care of those
elements. We have a weekly budget, and meals can be
as creative or simple as you want
We will have a short meeting in the Social Room Sunday,
July 10, at 9 a.m. to discuss logistics. If you can’t make the
meeting, contact Mike at [email protected] with a
“yes,” and we will form a team for three Wednesdays.

SLEEPING BAGS NEEDED FOR
SOUTH DAKOTA
The community health workers in S. Dakota have
asked us to collect gently used sleeping bags. Many
people, especially the elderly, run out of propane
for heating homes or cooking in the winter, and
sleeping bags will help those vulnerable to this situ-
ation. Drop off in the South Dakota tub in the
Welcome Center.

THANK YOU FROM LINDA JONES
Dear Church Family,
I sincerely appreciate all the cards, gifts and
words of love and encouragement offered me
following my resignation as Church Administra-
tor.
The reception and celebration at the worship
service were truly meaningful and thoughtful.
It has been a blessing to serve on the staff for
the past ten-plus years. As I said Sunday morn-
ing, I never thought of my work at Second Bap-
tist as a job but as a ministry. I have appreciated
your love and support and will greatly miss this
place of service but look forward to your con-
tinued friendship.
Love to all,
Linda Jones
STEPHEN MINISTRY
SUMMER COULD BE TIME FOR A
STEPHEN MINISTER
We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, en-
joyable time. But hurts, struggles, crises, and prob-
lems don’t take a vacation. Many times our difficul-
ties seem even worse during the summer because
everyone else seems to be enjoying life while you are
feeling down.
If you are experiencing a difficult time—emotionally,
spiritually, or relationally—you don’t have to suffer
alone. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers,
ready to listen, care for and encourage you, pray
with and for you, and provide one-to-one Christian
care to help you through whatever it is that you are
facing. Men are matched with male Stephen Minis-
ters, and women are matched with female Stephen
Ministers. It’s free. It’s confidential. And it will make
a difference in your life!
To find out more about Stephen Ministry for you or
someone you know, talk with one of our Stephen
Ministry Leaders.
