The 3rd ICIS Asian Surfactants Conference had returned to Singapore! Its third year, the meeting
was once again built on the core elements of an ICIS Conference – an up-to-date, informative and
business critical agenda, high-level speakers addressed the key topics facing the industry and
extensive opportunities for networking with influential players from across the surfactants value
chain. 2013 conference was attended by over 80 participants drawn from 14 countries around the
world. The followings are a short summary of 1st day am each session:

NeilA. Burns is Managing Partner
of NeilA Burns, LLC which invests
directly and alongside private
equity funds, in the specialty
chemical and oleochemical sectors.
The firm also provides operating
and strategic advice to chemical companies. Neil is
a specialty chemicals executive with more than 20
years of experience in investment, general
management, finance, sales, marketing, supply
chain, manufacturing and on boards of directors. As
a US based manager for an overseas parent
company he created two businesses in
oleochemicals and consumer goods. Neil also
incorporated, started and ran the US subsidiary of a
Brazilian public company involved in oleochemicals
and surfactants. His first experience in
oleochemicals was as shareholder and director of a

specialty surfactant company which used fatty
alcohols and derivatives to manufacture cosmetics
and personal care ingredients. Originally from the
UK, Neil has lived and worked in Europe and the
USA. He has served as chairman of a non-profit
board, with a focus on fundraising and public
speaking. He earned an MBA with distinction from
Wharton and a BSc. in Chemistry from the
University of York, UK.

Sarah Yarger Kienzle is Managing
Director of Linden Tree Partners, a
global consultancy company. Her
prior consulting experience includes
being a Director of PRTM (now
PwC), Principal of AT Kearney and Vice President
of Nexant. She has directed numerous oleochemical
engagements globally. Sarah's operating experience
includes serving as Vice President, Corporate
Development for Olin Corporation (NYSE:OLN)
where she was instrumental in the spinoff/lPO of
Arch Chemicals(NYSE: ARJ, now Lonza). She
subsequently served as the number four executive
of Arch. Sarah has also been a Director of Atlantic
Ventures, a venture capital fund, where she served
as the Life Sciences advisor. She holds a Sc.B. in
Mechanical Engineering from Brown University
and an MBA from New York University
Session: Detergents outlook is decided by many
elements such as disposable income, availability of
laundry equipment, product form, bar to powder
to liquid to pod, regional differences,detergent
efficiency, compaction, separation, environmental
impact(reduction per load, “ Pollution-eating”
detergent/”no surfactant” detergents.
Also Business model is changing. e.g. BASF
acquired Cognis in 2010, and their recent strategic
action is “Care and nutrition chemicals”,
“ Renewable”. They are aiming scale merit.scale merit.scale merit.scale merit. Emery
was established by PTT/Sime Darby as JV in 2010.
They also established JV “AK ChemTech” (Korea)
in 2011, established JV ERCAEmery with ERCA
(Europe), also expand their plant in Cincinnati, OH,

ECOLAB USA, acquired Nalco in 2011 and enter
water chemicals and services market, also acquired
Champion in 2012 and enter Oilfield Chemicals &

DowCorning, establised JV – Wilmar biorefinery.
JDAs – Stepan, Clariant, Arkema, Conversion –

S. Hari graduated in Chemical
Engineering from UDCT, Mumbai
(currently referred as ICT) a globally
acclaimed institute for Chemical
Engineering and Technology. During
his 35year career he has had the opportunity of
handling oleochemicals, surfactants, anionic,
cationic and non-ionic, catering to diverse industries
like home, personal care, leather, textiles, plastics to
name a few. He started his career with P&G,
followed by Castrol, Aegis, Drachem, SM
Zschimmer & Schwarz, Bombay Oil Industries,
Viswaat Chemicals, Keemya Oman, Iffco and
currently with VVF Singapore. S. Hari has been a
seasoned leader, headed profit centres and CEO in
several companies. His core strengths, aside from
general management include business development
and international marketing, successful turn
around of underperforming companies, start-up
ventures and by product-process initiatives. For the
last three and a half years he has been heading
VVF Singapore Pte Ltd, the trading arm of VVF
(India) Ltd. He has also been involved in sourcing
various oleo and allied chemicals for the global
market including various VVF businesses
worldwide, from various manufacturers in Asia. S.
Hari is particularly focussed on personal care
products such as speciality cosmetic ingredients.
Session: Soap in this presentation refers to Toilet
Soap both formulated for special properties and
general purpose but typically Sodium Salt of Fatty
Acids as the main ingredient. Shower Gel is a
products based on surfactants like Sodium Lauryl
Ether Sulphate, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate with or
without speciality additives. Shower Gel replacing
soap ?
In Asia, soap would continue to be main body
cleaning product amongst lower and middle income
group at least for next 5 years。. If soaps can be
carefully positioned it can even regain its market
lost to shower gel in the higher Income group。

Session: He had explained for synthetic alcohol
produced from petroleum. He say ExxonMobil is the
preferred oxo alcohol supplier. 50 years of
experience with oxo alcohols and world scale
manufacturing units in all three regions. They are
integrated with refining to maximize access to
reliable and consistent feedstocks and have global

sales, marketing, technology, and supply
organizations. They can commit to reliable, global
supply and to deliver value to chemical
intermediates customers. Exxal™ alcohols building
blocks for derivatives and important surfactant
properties such as non-ionic (ethoxylates), cloud
points (1 wt% in water), dynamic surface tension,
wetting property (Draves test), gel formation in
solution. So Ethoxylates from Exxal™ alcohols are
effective surfactants in various applications, such as
textile and fibre processing, leather processing, agro
-chemical formulations, emulsion polymerisation,
industrial and institutional cleaning, pulp and
paper processing, enhanced oil recovery, mining and
mineral extraction, etc.

has been with the Malaysian Palm
Oil Board for the last 18 years.
Heholds a PhD in Plant Geneticsand is currently
the Headof Genomics Unitof the Advanced
Biotechnology &Breeding Centre, at the Malaysian
Palm Oil Board (MPOB).
Session:He explained palm genome and palm tree
type which can be harvested all over the wolrd. He
pointted palm genome change by hybrization, not
genetically-modified organisms, is important to
increase harvest volume.

Michelle has worked as a consultant
in Tecnon OrbiChem's Shanghai
office for more than seven years. She
was initially responsible for
monitoring and analysing the
polyester chain, including polyester filament,
polyester staple and polyester fibre chips. Since
2010, Michelle has been responsible for covering
Paraxylene, PTA, Ethylene Oxide, Ethylene Glycols
and EO Derivatives for Tecnon OrbiChem's
Polyester Ethylene Oxide and Derivatives
Consulting Services. Michelle graduated from Xi'an
Jiaotong University in 2002 with a Bachelor's
degree in Polymer Science.
Session:World EO consumption is increasing and
Chinese EO capacity is also increasing. She
reported EO and Ethoxylate market trend.
