Following the recent closure of the town’s last bank, Mr Fishwick visited Shildon on Wednesday to urge locals to support his ‘Better Banking for Britain’ campaign by signing his online petition ahead of a meeting with MPs in Parliament next week. Mr Fishwick, an entre- preneur who created and manages Burnley Savings and Loans bank, hopes that his petition can stimulate positive change in banking and give a voice to people who have been let down by the banks. Locally, Councillor Alan Walker said: “I have changed my bank to the Coop, and I suggest everyone else does the same.” Mayor, Brian Stoker, told Mr Fishwick: “The heart has been ripped out of the town with the closurse of the banks, with everyone having to travel to Bishop Auckland, which makes it particulalry difficult for the older generation. With his own company, Mr Fishwick says he has shown that small, “back- to-basics” banking works: now, he wants to see a community bank in every town and city in the UK, resulting in more loans to small businesses and better returns for savers. “Could this be the answer for towns like Shildon?” he asks. Mr Fishwick is urging MPs from affected communi- ties to join him at West- minster. Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon is offering the chance to fulfil childhood dreams of driving a train, or riding on the footplate. The museum is offering a range of packages including ‘Full steam ahead!’ - a two-hour steam train driving experience. “During the session on a working steam train you will learn about the site operations and crossing signalling, and then – under the guidance of our experi- enced team – fire and drive a steam locomotive with passenger coach for ap- proximately one kilometre along our track,” said a spokesperson, adding that “you can invite up to four guests to travel on the train. And at the end of your two-hour session, you’ll be issued with a com- memorative certificate.” The experience is available on selected dates only and for insurance purposes, you must be aged between 21 and 70. Alternatively, there is also a 30-minute driver experience session available. This is a one-to-one taster of firing and driving a locomotive. As with ‘Full steam ahead!’, participants must also be aged between 21 and 70. And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s also the opportunity to ride the footplate of a train on a return journey from Collection to Goods. Participants must be aged 18 or over. “This experience is available on all passenger steaming days, except our gala events. Rides are by arrangement only,” said the spokesperson. Shildon Police would like to thank members of the public who assisted them on Thursday 25th October by detaining a male who was wanted by police. The man had seen police on Redworth Road on the afternoon of Thursday 25th October and started running away to avoid being captured.

He was eventually seen running through the rear gardens of Dalton Crescent, where a number of the public saw that the police were trying to apprehend him and were able to assist and detain him until officers arrived. “Many thanks to those in-dividuals involved!” said a spokesperson.

When the clocks went back last weekend, what did you do with the extra hour?Stay in bed? Fit in an extra gym session? Spend time with family? How about saving a life?NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are reminding the public that it only takes an hour to give blood. With blood in constant demand, new and existing donors are being urged to donate in the local area to ensure that sufficient blood is available for patients. There are many ways that donated blood can save the lives of the sick and injured. Donated blood is used not only in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and

receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia. Giving blood can dramati-cally improve or save the lives of those in need of blood transfusions. In fact, a single donation can be broken into three component parts (red cells, plasma and platelets) which means that one donation can potentially save or improve the lives of up to three people.Donna Batty, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHSBT, said, “As the weather gets colder, people are more likely to stay indoors.” “We would like to remind people that they only need to spend an hour of their time with us in order to help save lives.

“With the increase in cold and flu this season, it is vital that those that are able to donate do so, to keep stock levels healthy.”Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.A session will be taking place at St Luke’s Church in Ferryhill on on Tuesday 13th November, from 2pm to 3.45pm and again from 4.30pm to 7pm.To book an appointment call the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

John Paul Gomersall, of Church Street, Shildon, pleaded guilty to a charge of shop theft when he appeared recently at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court. The 32-year-old was seen by store staff and on CCTV, in Morrisons, Shildon, on 16th October, when he took two bottles of vodka and boxes of chocolates, valued at £38.78. The court heard that an unknown male had

approached Gomersall outside of the store and told him to steal the items. Afterwards, the defendant stated that he knew that it had been wrong and dishonest. Gomersall has previous convictions and had served a suspended sentence, in 2009, on driving matters, as well as having been cautioned for two other offences earlier this year. In defence it was stated that Gomersall

suffered from significant mental health problems (bi-polar disorder), and had in the past attempted to commit suicide. He had been in West Park Hospital for two weeks prior to the time of the offence, about which he has little recollec-tion.Magistrates sentenced Gomersall to a 12 months conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £85 costs and £15 victim surcharge.

Metal thieves have struck again at Saint John’s Church, removing part of the lightening conductor for the second time in only a few months. Rev. David commented on the sadness that members of the congregation felt. “It all seems so pointless” he said, “These people must have come armed with a crowbar and got away with metal worth, at best, a few pounds, but leaving us with a repair bill of perhaps £200.”

“Saint John’s is a building much loved in our community”, added Barbara, one of two church wardens. “It is paid for by the kindness of the people of Shildon and well used most days of the week. When thieves steal from here they are stealing from everyone”. Police have urged passers-by who may have seen anything suspicious in the vicinity of Saint John’s on the evening of Monday 29th October to get in touch.

Police are investigating an unprovoked attack on two males during the early hours of Sunday 28th October, along the ‘Black Path’ heading away from the Bus Station in Shildon. The two victims sustained minor injuries and were very distressed over what

occurred. Shildon Police are appealing to anybody to come forward with information and would particularly like to hear from the female who was in company with the offender when the attack took place.Anyone with information should call police on 101.

Dwayne Howard, of Hillyard House, Redworth Road, Shildon, pleaded guilty at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court to a charge that on 15th July, in Bishop Auckland, he assaulted two police officers in the execution of their duty. The 25 year-old had been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and upon being told that he was to be taken to the police station in Durham City and not at Bishop Auckland, he became aggressive.Whilst inside the police vehicle he grabbed at the officers’ arms and legs and

eventually a tazer gun was used but he continued to struggle.Howard’s previous convic-tions included a similar matter for which he was sentenced to 120 hours of unpaid work in July 2011.The defendant, who had received advice from the duty solicitor, represented himself in court and stated that he was sorry for his actions which he described as being ‘out of order’.On being asked by the chairman of the bench if the tazer gun had hurt he replied, “No, not really.”Howard was fined a total of £138.

Residents are being reminded that the last col-lections of garden waste will take place during November.Durham County Council is thanking householders for taking part in its garden waste recycling service and helping to compost rather than sending unwanted garden materials to landfill.Garden waste is collected from around 156,000 properties in County Durham between spring and autumn. The last collections this year will take place between 13th and 23rd November and resume next spring.

Between April and September this year, over 20,000 tonnes of garden waste was collected from homes in County Durham which has been turned into compost.Residents are asked to store their garden waste containers safely over the winter until the collections resume next spring. More than 150,000 households across County Durham have their garden waste collected by the council and if residents have any garden waste over this winter period they can take it to one of the 15 household waste recycling centres in the

county. The council collects the garden waste from households in the Easington, Sedgefield, Chester-le-Street, Durham, Derwentside and Wear Valley areas. Residents who receive the Durham County Council garden waste collection service are asked to check their collection calendar and note their final collection date for this year.Householders can also find out their collection dates by entering their postcode into ‘My Durham’ on the council’s website at www.durham.gov.uk.

The ‘Talking about Cancer Service’ which is part of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is looking for volunteers to join the service. The Service seeks to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the most common cancers including bowel, breast and lung cancer. The Talking about Cancer (TAC) Team is looking for more volunteers to help work in local communi-ties to increase the un-derstanding about cancer signs and symptoms and raise awareness of the NHS national screening programmes.Fiona McQuiston, Health Improvement Lead for the Service for County

Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust said, “Approximately one in three people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime. 50-75% of avoidable cancer deaths are due to the cancer being diagnosed in its late stages; being diagnosed early could save over 5,000 lives a year. That’s why raising awareness of the signs and symptoms is so important. If people know what to look out for and we remove some of that stigma about seeking help then we can really make a difference to a person’s chances of survival. “We have an amazing network of volunteers who support the team, some who have been affected

by cancer themselves or others who have friends and family that have been affected, and they provide a very valuable addition to our team. We have a number of openings for volunteers with the team and would really like to hear from anyone who might interested in finding out more. Volunteering with the team can result in gaining a great deal of sat-isfaction in helping others and gaining experience through dedicated training and development. If you are interested in vol-unteering with the Talking about Cancer Team, contact Donna McDermott, Health Improvement Prac-titioner on 0800 783 4056 for further information.

FA Vase busare interested in travelling on to this match, contact Russ Henderson on 07538 789464 to reserve your seat or alternatively, book by visiting the supporters club shop any time during the Ashington match on Wednesday, 7th November.

Shildon AFC progressed to the second round of the FA Vase competition after a good 2-3 away win at South Shields on Wednesday 24th October. The game was always going to be a much harder tie than the last time the teams met in September when Shildon won 11-0.Shields opened the scoring on 19 minutes when a long goal kick beat Richard Flynn and when straight to No 9, Peter Kane, who fired over Keith Finch into

the top corner. Shildon hit back and levelled on the half hour with a pile-driver from 25 yards by Robbie Briggs. Half Time: South Shields 1 Shildon 1.Shildon were dominant in the second half but, having failed to convert, found themselves behind again after conceding a penalty on the hour. The turning point came on 69 minutes when the home side had Bell sent off for a deserved 2nd yellow.

Immediately Shildon were all square when Jamie Owens fired through a crowd of players for a debut goal. Shildon pressed for the winner and on 74 minutes Ben Wood beat two men but his shot was blocked by keeper Thomas Courtney and came out to Sam Garvie, who headed in. Shildon were rampant and could easily have scored three or four more goals. Final Score: South Shields 2 Shildon 3.
