out to everyone at the Methodist Chapel for their amazing hard work; to Alison and Lorraine, the cooks at Cleves Cross and Dean Bank primary schools for baking with the pupils; to Mrs Woo-dall from FBEC and to our Fuel for School partners Re-f- use.

“A very big thank you also to the pupils from the primary schools who worked so hard baking and prepping food.

“To top it all, we raised money for the Fuel for School project and we saved lots and lots of

food from being wasted.”The Fuel for School pro-

The project also sees the pupils run their own weekly market stall with the surplus food.

The community is able to support the initiative by making purchases on a pay-as-you-feel basis.

ONE HUNDRED people came together last Satur-day to celebrate Mother’s Day with an elegant After-noon Tea.

at Spennymoor Town Hall Art Gallery along with work from another twenty incredible artists, includ-ing Karen Thompson, whose work on miners’ faces was snapped up within the first hour of her art going public.

Karen is also exhibiting in Colorado Springs in America and is quickly becoming a highly col-lectable artist.

There is also a sensa-tional exhibition of local

photographer Neil Bage’s work and some thought provoking and stimulating art by Matthew Ellwood.

Work by Bishop Auck-land-based Eric Thomp-son is also on exhibition and available for sale.

His painting of five min-ers’ faces with pit shafts and colliery band is con-sidered a must see.

All of the new artists compliment the estab-lished and highly collecta-ble Norman Cornish, who has work on display and for sale which has never before been seen.

Alongside the original artwork, there is a large collection of Cornish prints and books for sale.

A spokesperson for the gallery said: “Having forged close links to the Bishop Auckland Min-ing Art Gallery, The Bob Abley Art Gallery within the town hall is going from strength to strength and is now a major visitor attraction in the county, with stunning artwork both to view and for sale.

“Due to its increased vis-itor numbers, the gallery is also looking for addi-tional volunteers to meet and greet the public.

“So, if you are a nice per-son who enjoys meeting other nice people, why not ring 01388 815276 for further information.”

The gallery opening times are Monday to Fri-day 12 noon until 4pm and Saturdays from 10am until 2pm. Entry to the gal-lery is free.

LOCAL ARTIST, Charlie Parker, from Durham is one of this year’s fantas-tic portrait artists who was recently seen on Sky Arts Channel’s Portrait Artist of the Year pro-gramme.

Entirely self-taught, Parker has also had to overcome partial colour blindness to become a serious and respected portrait artist.

A selection of his work is currently on exhibition

Ferryhill Sport and Education Centre were introduced to One Unite Partnership after they provided this service to a local nursery.

The centre already ran street dance classes and coffee mornings but are now able to buy a range of new equipment and a much needed new boiler.

Shaun Hillary, chairman of the centre, said: “After the savings provided by One Unite Partnership, we’ve been able to give back to the community and give the people what they asked for by setting up a new soccer school which now averages 50 children a week.

“The soccer school is available for ages 2-13 and has been set up with funds that we wouldn’t have had if it were not for the money One Unite Part-

nership saved us.“Their impact on Ferry-

hill as a community has been huge, with children from the area now able to attend a local soccer school, as well as having much more to do within the centre in general.”

Ferryhill Sport and Edu-cation Centre is the latest success story to join a growing list of organisa-tions to have been pos-itively impacted by the work of One Unite Part-nership.

IF THE recent freezing temperatures left you shivering by the radiator, you may be worried about the impact on your heat-ing bills – and your bank balance.

Residents concerned about their energy bills are being encouraged to seek advice from Durham County Council’s Manag-ing Money Better service, which is run in partner-ship with Prince Bishops Community Bank.

The service provides a free and impartial home visit to ensure residents are on the most appropri-ate tariff, as well as giving fuel debt advice.

They can also find out if they are entitled to the Government Warm Homes Discount of £140, something many homes do not realise they can claim.

With the average home energy bill now £1,340 per year, there are a number of ways to make savings but many people are una-ware of how to get more for their money.

Six hundred residents have already benefitted from the scheme.

Living in a large end of terrace house in a rural vil-lage, the woman’s electric bills were high and so a home visit from a Manag-ing Money Better advisor was arranged.

After checking her bills, the advisor realised she

was paying more than the standard tariff and had been missing out on the Warm Home Discount for 17 years, despite being in the automatic group.

As a result, she switched her tariff, saving £277 a year – as well as ensuring she should receive the Warm Home Discount of £140.

A couple from Stanley also wrote to the council to show how much they appreciated the team’s help when it was most needed.

After receiving an unex-pectedly large bill, they were visited by an advisor who worked with them to ensure the bill was reviewed and they were then given a large refund.

Cllr Kevin Shaw, Cabi-net member for strategic housing and assets, said: “Many people worry about dealing with their energy bills but aren’t aware that little changes can make a big difference.

“Our Managing Money Better service has already helped lots of residents in the county and we would encourage anyone who is struggling to get in touch with our team who can provide free, impartial advice.”

To arrange a home visit from Managing Money Better contact Durham County Council’s Housing Advice Line on 03000 268 000.

“It will send live updates to your phone or PC to let you know when your rel-ative is settling down to watch the TV, putting the kettle on for a cuppa or heating something in the mircowave.

“So if your dad usually uses the kettle between 7am and 9am, the app will send an alert letting you know whether or not this has happened, mean-ing you can rest assured that your loved one is up, active and well.”

In order to use the ser-vice, people need to purchase a plug, which is inserted between an appliance and the socket. The plug then connects to the app and sends information to family members or friends.

The plug is purchased

with a one or two-year subscription and no inter-net connection is needed as the plug contains the same type of sim card as used in a mobile phone.

As many as ten peo-ple at a time can receive alerts and the system is quick and easy to set up.

Care Connect offers a range of products designed to help people remain independent in their own home and also offer reassurance to their friends and family.

The range includes devices which raise an alarm when a fall occurs, remind people to take their medication or create an alert when a telephone rings.

For more information about the 3rings service visit www.durham.gov.uk/careconnect, call 03000 262 195 or email care.con [email protected].

A NEW service has been launched to offer a lit-tle extra peace of mind to the relatives of older and vulnerable people in County Durham.

3rings is a mobile phone and PC app which lets people know when their relative is using an elec-trical appliance such as a kettle, television or wash-ing machine.

The idea is to reassure people that their relative is up and well.

The app is being offered by Durham County Coun-cil through its Care Con-nect service.

Linda Ogilvie, Care Con-nect manager, said: “The app is a really simple, affordable way of offer-ing people that little extra reassurance if their rela-tive is older or vulnerable.
