d01 !US HJ1 NEWSPAPER SIn an attempt to present a better results service inSunday's and Monday's Age and Herald-Sun we will beattempting this week to obtain all senior section finalsQ!Q scores. goalkickers and best players (both sides) .To do this we will require the WINNING SIDE to veryquickly obtain these details through to the VAFA .

We stopped trying to do this about 6 or 7 years ago asto get both teams to co-operate in the after-matchemotion of a win or a loss proved too difficult and wehad no hope of meeting the newspaper deadlines .

her Brett Conne ll or myself will have contacted allsenior and U 19 clubs asking if they win to provide thisto us as soon as possible after the game .

We will not be able to provide all details for ReservesSections and only final scores will appear .I appeal to the secretaries of winning clubs to assist ushis weekend to in giving the maximum exposure

possible for VAFA matches .

Duty Officers (VAFA) and VAFA umpires (field, boundary and goal), have been asked to be nundful ofrules applying to too many officials around or on thebench and water-carriers, trainers and runners notleaving the field immediately their tasks have beencompleted . Clubs need to understand that free kickscan be paid or on-field officials ordered-off withoutbeing replaced (for balance of that quarter) for theseviolations .

Venues and clubs abusing VAFA alcohol rules.VAFA clubs visiting non-VAFA venues for finalsare risking heavy (and automatic) fines shoul d

they frequent social clubs where alcohol is servedduring the playing of matches . This behaviour also putsat risk these venues being offered future VAFA finals .Open social clubs are for the use of that particularclub's members ONLY.

At least three clubs have been written to, who have hadobserved club people drifting into social clubs duringthe dav.

Rumours have abounded about the future of OldMentonians Footba ll Club . Delighted to havehad confirmed by key officials that the Panthers

prowl into 2003 and well beyond . Great news .

The second favourite was bundled out last week, opening the door for the chaps from McKinnon.NOBs may yet get under mine and the bookies 'guard.

REVIEW

From all reports, it was a magnificent day weather-wise at the home of footy, EP, where the cut throatfirst semi final battle lines were drawn, and it wasNOBs who were far too good for Mazenod when theyprevailed by 21 pts .

NOBs blasted out of the blocks in first qtr byslamming on 7 goals to 3, left their opponentsreeling, and held a 23 pt lead . To their credit, aftercopping an earful on North West FM from yourstruly regarding their waywardness in front of goal,NOBs had their kicking shoes on in this stanza. The second term was an even affair, with neitherside being able to convert to their many chances. 4 .5to 3 .6 in favour of NOBs indicate that the contestwas fierce, with pressure aplenty. NOBs had theirchances to pull away and similarly, Mazenod hadtheir opportunity to peg back their opponents' lead. However it was not to be and NOBs held acommanding 28 pt lead at the main change .One would have expected Mazcnod to come out allguns blazing in the third term, but in fact it wasNOBs who fired all the shots, booting the first 2goals to go to an unassailable 40 pt lead . The fat ladywas called to the balcony at EP, and she sung, andsung and sung . "NOBs are home" she cried .However, Mazenod were not to be denied, booting 4goals to I for the remainder of the qtr to givethemselves a chance going into the last term, facinga 20 pt deficit .

It was obvious that the folk from Mazenod wereinsulted by that fat lady, and promptly gave her the2 fingered salute as they went ape droppings. Theykicked the next 4 goals straight to go to a 2 pt leadat the 8 minute mark of the last qtr, and those whotook the short odds on NOBs at half time werefeeling very queasy, and heading for the front bar atthe Elsternwick Hotel . However, the catch up footytook its toll on the boys from the east, as NOBssteadied, and booted the next 3 goals to wincomfortably in the end .

The big man Barker (4 goals) was tremendous forNOBs, giving them a target to aim for in the forwardline, with Sanders and Collison feeding himthroughout the day. Mrs Fuller's boys toiledmanfully for Mazenod for the whole day andMcIntyre and Murray earned their beers as well .

NOBS won the tossand kicked with thebreeze, and after an Ientertaining firs tquarter the scores were level . The second sa~,,take control of the game with 8 goals to 3, andmade it very difficult for NOBS. NOBs had a realin the 3rd term to make a game of it, but in thequarter, OH steadied to take out the gacomfortably by 24 pis Big "Foo" kicked 5 for OH,was well supported by Lay and Ross . Becontributors for NOBs were Roache, NultyBryer.

PREVIEW

This is the heavyweight battle that we've twaiting for, as Old Melbunaiaras (1/2) lineagainst Old Haileybury (6/4) . The battle of the tErwin Leyden and his entire club have had theiron this day since Preliminary Final day in 21With the recruits they have bagged and the sbase from last year's near sniss . OMs have beencompetition trendsetters from the start, clairscalps left, right and centre. In saying that, Mick Dwyer has given his lads aCummings type preparation . The lead up formbeen solid without being spActaeular, peaking a

right time of the year, and they just kept winning .nd yes, I'm happy to admit they've got .under my

guard . O'Farrell would have to go close to being therecruiting coup of the year, and he might just be thediffi ience between victory and defeat . And the halfback line of White . Lay and Carson have been almosti :npossible to penetrate .

I'm so tempted to tip OH, and if he thought I woulddo so, I'm sure Mick would send me to Tahiti toconvince me otherwise. The results are on the board, and the scalps have been huge. However, I believethat OMs have had their focus solely on this day toreturn to A Section . After the happenings of a coupleof years ago, a lot of supporters would feel that]i 've done their time and now it's pay day . I agree,

<uid O;vls will march on to the GF and A Section in`? ()03 with a 4 pt win, so get your heart pills out for

Old ,Ib (215) vs Old Paradians (7/4) OP by 6 ptsThis game could very well be decided on thequalification of senior players from the Bundooracamp, and on that basis, they have the chance tocharge straight into the Big One with a win today, and a fortnight off so some of the boys can go to thetrack!!

To the victors go the spoils . Congratulations to allassociated with Whitefriars for your professionalperformance on Saturday and over the entire season. Torebound from the despair of relegation and bounce backwithin 12 months shows what tremendous characterabounds within the club. To all associated with the clubcongratulations on your promotion. Just one hurdle tojump now. St Bedes bqentone-Tigers live to fight anotherday, will be a tough week for Ba rney and the players, butyou don't finish on top of the ladderfor no reason and theywill bounce back. The Grammarians quietly and efficiently advance to thenext Round, and we say goodbye to Beaumaris who havehad a year totally dominated by injuries to key players. They have blooded some young ones and will bounce back .

REVIEW - FIRST SEMI FINALCaulfield Grammarians an d Beaumaris met in this evenlymatched elimination battle. Beaumaris started the gamewell with it's height across each line causing seriousconcern for Dean Anderson and his panel . By the firstchange the Sharks had opened up a handy lead andappeared to have the Fields measure.By the start of the second the midfielders of Beaumariswere well on top setting up countless opportunities for theirfonvards to capitalize . After a 4 goal to 3 quarter Beauywent into the main change with a handy lead and thecontest was in their grasp .As so often can be the case the third quarter thechampionship quarter can so often decide a game and thisone was no exception . The Sharks attacked for the first 10minutes but could not trouble the scorer The Fields thensprung into action and ran riot to slam home 6 goals to 1,in a great exhibition of running and intense finals football,to turn the game around in their favour with an 18 poin t

buffer at the final stage .The last quarter was anextremely tight affairwith Beaumari sattacking incessantlyand with 4 minutes to go there was only 10 points in it anthe Sharks were still a chance . Their next shot hit the po:that did not help their cause, but to Caulfield's credit thedefenders stood tall to help record a great victory and lhto fight another day . A disappointing end to a tough seasofor the Sharks.Willsy led and presented well up forward along with Del,down back, Knighta and Ice both provided much neederun from defense for the Fields, and for Beauy Luke Heacompeted well all day Cuz Marcus Lee was good a

s Johnno Holt and Mick Matullick, and Mark Ensor playchis best game of the year .In the Ressies it was a tough hard fought contest all dswith the Fields just doing enough especially in the laquarter to keep the Two Blues at bay. Sash Krien . StetiiSant and Super McAssey were all good for the Fields, anthe Two Blues were well served by Danny DecartereCameron Morgan and Windbridge .

SECOND SEMI FINA LA scoreline of 1 all in the home and away season made f~an enthralling contest at Sandringham on Saturd~between St . Bedes Mentone Tigers an d Whitefriars. As expected it was tough going early as both teams suss(each other out, with neither side wanting to concede 2inch as the lead see sawed. Rob Pasqualotto would ha,had 10 possessions as he tried hard to give his runnaplayers first use of the ball. A late snap from David Crea sathe Friars trial by the barest margin at the first change .The second quarter continued in a similar vein with neith, side able to gain a clear ascendancy, to me though tlFriars seemed slicker with their movements and had maof a structure . Buckets was being well covered at his end Ia couple of opponents and Richie Pawlik, Luke Swain wekeeping Luke Wintle and Co quiet at the other end . JeAnderson brilliantly crumbed a couple of goals to see itWhitefriars unit 2 points to the better at the long intervalRob Pasqualotto's dominance soon was taking it's effect <the likes of Anthony Carbone, Ben Janson and Matt Powstarted to win more of the ball sending it forward wheSwooper Northey was now providing a different avenueattack, as this dominance started to show on tlscoreboard . Ando was now proving to be a distinnuisance to the Tigers cause and another couple so(made it 6 for the term to the Tigers zip who went to tlthree quarter time huddle with their heads bowed .The Friars kicked the first of the last to put the ganalmost beyond the Tigers grasp . None the less they did ;forward through a run at all costs plan of attack to kickcouple of goals and put a bit of pressure on Whitefriars wlmay have taken the foot off the peddle a bit . But Ando's 6 1

twin ended any further resistance as the Whitefriarswalked away with a comprehensive victory, promotion toB-Grade and another crack at a premiership . Adisappointed Tiger unit with shattered confidence have aweek to get back to their early season form ,The Friars had many good players with Anderson .Langford, Carbone and Janson among the better ones.Sam Hecker, Adam L'Huillier and Timmy Beasley and littleScafidi stood up all day for the Tigers, with much helpneeded from their struggling team mates .The Ressies saw Old Camberwell be the first to advance tothe Grand Final and a shot at the premiership. Anotherclose tussle in the first half, until the Wellers blew it apartin the third, and while the Friars came back hard in thelast the damage was done and the horse had bolted. GarthRowe was BOG with a fine game in the backline, supportedby Anthony Hardenberg, Marcus Scott and Naysan Saffar.Whitefriars had good players in Chris Dance, Zane Webb,Danvan Brice and Andrew Glenn .

P D]VlE WAnd now it all comes down to this the Preliminary Final, onelast chance for both sides to have a crack on the promotionto B-Grade that comes at the end of today's battle . If youread through the Tigers form guide over the last 6 weeks itdoes not really read that well only a come from behindvictory against the Wells on the positive side of the ledger .There is no doubt they are down on confidence and some ofthem are not attacking the ball as hard as they were earlyin the season. The Fields on the other hand have beenpretty good only stumbling to the inform Glen Eira .A game of contrasts the more physical style of game of theTi,,ers against the fast running attacking game of the Fields.t:e have one side full of confidence, and the other onestruggling a bit . Again the big man battle between TimmyBeasley and Andrew Sorensen will have a fair influence onthe result of this game. Have the utmost respect for Barneyand the Tigers and they probably deserve to win, they needmore up forward which could be hard as the Fieldsdefenders are the springboard of their attack .So in one of my upset selections going on a hunch againI'm tipping the Grammarians to win and return to B-

tion and a crack at Whitefriars in the OF .Anoiiter close encounter in the Ressies should start the

off on a high note . Two fast running sides contestingt:~i, one . The influx of a couple of Senior players will helpthe Friars cause and should be enough to get them over theline and join their mates in the Big One .

B& F SELECTION; Very hard to pick a winner here not'j ,%,ing seen too much. But it could come from Matt Power,'ndrew Sorensen, Luke Browne, Mouse Wintle . Matt.~icCraw or a roughie Big Dave Williams from Banyule .PRESS CORRESPONDENT'S Special thanks to Rob3uIler from Beaumaris and Basil Cleary from Prahran forhe contributions to this column during the season.

Then thedrought broke, and for the rest of the match pointswere amassed at a rate more in keeping ;vith the twoside' talents . By half tin-ie the Vultures lead by only2 points, but the feeling among the spectators wasthat they were looking more composed than theAnimals. This was borne out in 93 as the run ofplay began to favour Mentone though vAthout thembeing able to achieve a significant breakaway, buttheir running players were clearly troubling St Leos .Q4 was sensational as the two teams tit for tattedright up to the final siren, and the Vultures wereable to withstand every challenge the Animalsmounted . Chris O'Meara was just sensational,Matthew Sullivan, David Perrin, Robert Gallagher,Simon Fanning, & Mick Sullivan weren't far behind, plus the Barr Bros were very damaging runners forMentone . St Leos best included Paul Ristevski &Tim McCann in defence, Brendan Vaughan inattack, with the ball carriers Andre Burgess, JasonFenn-", Guy Donovan, Don Dini, and Nick Hodderall prominent.

r-ot : h flues out defended University Blacks afterkicking a 3 goals winning break in the first 10minutes . From then on being a forward for eitherteam was a hazardous occupation. The Ashers winwas in keeping with the H & A dominance of thecompetition they h .~ shorrn all year.

1St SEMIS - -University B~_.c_ :s were harried to defeat by a

relentless Aquinas. The Bloods reminded me of theway the dour, professional Romans did in the devilmay care Celts back in the days of Julius Caesarand Vercingetorix . Blacks were the front-runnersthroughout the first half, but it was obvious thepressure applied by Aquinas was unsettling and thelatter inched past them towards the end of g3 . The

Bloods continued the pressure into Q4 causing the

uncharacteristicmistakes, while theAquinas sharp enderspiled on 7 majors . The Bloods success was due to ahuge team effort, but John Jess, Daniel Den Braber,Glen Whitehead, Greg Evans, & Sean Flynn all stoodout for their consistent performance of the onepercenters. Blacks best was their mobile squad ofJames Green, Rob Dillon, Luke Nethercote, AndrewCostello, and Chris Schilling, on a day on which littlewent rit;ilt.

The Bloods will conic into this match in theirfavourite position as underdogs, in which they are attheir most dangerous. Statistically there's not muchbetween the two attacks, but in defence over thevear the Bloods have had 21% more points scoredagainst them . The question is, can the Animals'defenders apply sufficient pressure today to shutout the opposition fon.vards? At the other end the StLeo's forwards continue to be in great form, andBrendan Vaughan's effort last week was superb .The all important battle of the engine rooms willdecide the match and both teams of on-ballers andmidfielders are in top form: it isn't often spectator'sget to see players like Den Braber, Flynn,Mhitehead, and Lorkin for Aquinas, competing andagainst the likes of Manton, Donovan, Fennell, &Burgess . After what should be an enthrallingcontest . I think the Bloods will squeak into the GFby a kick! And yes, I should be certified!

The fnats started in glorious spring weather lastweekend and the matches were just as intriguing

as the start to September.

1ST SE R . : . : oBENTLEIGad V I.,_~'IROB EThe premiership race is down to three after La Trobefinished Bentleigh's season with a hard fought eightpoint win. In a game where the biggest margin gotto only 16 points, it was the B's wasted opportunitiesthat cost them a spot in the Preliminary final .

They dominated the midfield -,vith Franky Dimattinaand captain Eyles collecting many hard ball gets andsending their side deep into attack . But their turnover rate was just as high and allowed University tostay alive . The Trober's converted better whichproved the difference .Center half back Daniel Gleeson played a terrificgame kicking three goals and taking a number oftelling marks at crucial moments, while up forwardFarrant too was in spectacular form and baggedfour. Bentleigh switched star player Dave Martinfrom attack to defence in an attempt to curb hisinfluence . The two high-flyers had a terrific battlewith the Trobers key position player taking thehonours.University ruckman Ash Cummings who had missedthe past month through injury was also importantplaying a pinch-hitting role off the bench. Hispresence and evergreen legs were instrumental inthe result .Bentleigh's goal scoring machine Chris Sharp playedwell booting eight goals including six in the first halfand taking his season tally to 87 . La Trobe wereforced to move key midfielder Josh Levy on him inthe second half, a decision that kept the leadinggoal-kicker to just two more for the day .

Overall the game was a terrific contest played ingreat spirit and sportsmanship . The commitmentshowed by both teams was fitting of their position onthe ladder . In the end it was Far-rant who sealed thegame winning a fifty fifty contest and kicking trulyon his opposite foot . The Trober's seem to have thewinning feeling at the moment and are a hard teamto stop on the big grounds .

SECOND SEMI-FINAL:

YARRA VALLEY V SALESIAN

Yarra Valley secured a spot in the 2002 Grand Finaland promotion into DI after defeating Salesian by 27

26

points in anenthralling contest .

In a highlycompetitive game ,Salesian took the battle right up to the Premiershipfavourite . As expected the cat and mouse from thelast game were forgotten as both sides got down tobusiness. Salesian matched Yarra Valley in mostareas including the scoreboard with 29 scoringshots to 22, the closest any side has got to theBushrangers in some time.

Salesian's analysis during the past month paiddividends early, with Thain on target kicking fivegoals, and Andrew Campbell in the ruck and Iva,Bobetic also instrumental.

A 20 minute lapse towards the end of the firsiquarter and mid way into the second proved costl}

for Salesian . It gave the Bushrangers midfield <

chance to exert their dominance with Peake, UlfDrew brothers and Valoppi getting plenty of touches

And it was their trademark that has seen them wiiwell all year, running the ball forward in number :

and opening up numerous goal scoring optionsThis week was no different with Keem, B PeakeStone and Crowe all being multiple goal kickers .

The Bushrangers can now enjoy the week off as the

prepare for their tilt at the flag. while Salesian need

to regroup for its match against La Trobe .

PRELIMINARY FINAL PREV IEW:BAI.ESLA+t V LA TROBE UNIVERSITY

The Preliminary final will see La Trobe's youth anienthusiasm battle against the experience and mighof Salesian . In what's sure to be an entertaininmatch with the final place in the Grand Final aripromotion into DI being up for grabs .

University will welcome the return of full back Nic :Rosengren after he completed Geologists duties uSweden. Rosengren will fly in later this week an .will add strength to the Trober's spine and alonwith Cummings much needed height .

In the Salesian camp things are being kept very loi

key in their build up . Ranks have been closed, wit

club hierarchy electing to concentrate on winning ian attempt to get through to the Grand Final an

have another crack at the Bushrangers . Big gull

Campbell and Ivan Bobetic fired last week and di

team proved they are a contender .

The jury on a result is still out with both tea sharing a win apiece this season. In roun

d THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2C(

Page 27: The Amateur Footballer, Week 20, 2002

Salesian won a close one by 11 points however in thereturn match at University's home ground it was theTrobers who prevailed in fine style kicking nine goalsin the first quarter to eventually win by 34 points .La Trobe is a side full of confidence and one thatknows how to win. They have a terrific record andhave stretched its winning streak to eight out of itslast nine games, with the only loss being to YarraValley. In comparison Salesian has beeninconsistent but showed good form in almostbeating the Bushangers last week .

Although Salesian finished second on the ladder andare playing competitive football, my tip is La Trobe towin in a fast and hard running encounter. Farrant,White and Gleeson will carry their good form into thematch and get the Trober's over the line by 17points .

RESERVES :FITZROY REDS V PENINSULA

The Reds were beaten last week and must bounceback against Peninsula. For the Pirates Krohn wason target with five goals and with the support ofBonner and McKinstry contributed in their win. This should give them a good launching pad tocontest against the minor premiers .But with Fitzroy's wake up call last Saturday theywill be out to win and get another crack at theBushrangers - Reds by 25 points .

0 DISC O SUPPORT: DISCOS are not normallythe source of happy yarns with footballers butthis is different .

Discosource is not a nightclub but one of thestate's big guns in stationery.

It sponsors Salesian, which is lining up in thisweekend's D2 Preliminary Final at CentralReserve Waverley, and St Kevins in A grade .That's a big effort for one company and is worthyof support from the larger Amateur family .

The connection for Discosource is its statemanager is Salesian president and 200-gamerAndrew Seager and managing director StephenSkehan is a Skev .Maybe De La could get a sponsorship too asAndrew clocked up a few seasons there too .

TN MOT /r-_!, S ~1i;_?f ` 1 ; : DAVIDParkin delivered one of his outstanding speechesat the VAFA Umpires' Association dinner at theMCC Members' Main Dining Room a fortnight ago .

The Melbourne High old boy, Hawthornpremiership captain and coach, and Carltonpremiership coach and Director of AFL Umpiring, spoke with passion and his low, rough, intensevoice echoed throughout the room .

Parko talked about the issues of football thatintertwinethroughout themodern game .He talked abouthis sonAnthony, whohas just retiredfrom old Trinityafter playingwith oldMelburnians, how technologyhas madefootball workand not ahobby, and thattoday's players are suffering because all theyhave done is play sport all year round, to breakinto the AFL but then are worn out by the age of20, for instance osteo pubis. Parkin believes restand recovery is just as important in the players'preparation and that football is now more an"athletic game than a kicking the ball game" .

The Hawthorn Football Manager spoke aboutumpiring issues, including the difficulties ofrecruiting, and then received a standing ovationwhen he ended with : "Thank you on behalf offootball for the magnificent thing you do" .

.7-7TGI WA S a little facilities have itover the localfooty club".

disappointed with your article in last week'sFTLOTG "Sad drop for Monds" regarding districtsides in C grade for 2003.

Firstly, apart from Ormond and Beaumaris, thereare two other district sides in C grade in GlenEira and Prahran. We also have Mentone comingup into C grade in 2003 totalling five .As for facilities, have you been to Beaumaris andOrmond? They are pretty good . Prahran has theVFA ground in Orrong Rd .Hampton Rovers have great new facilities .Glen Eira has a multi million-dollar complexwhich outshines most VAFA clubs, includingstate-of-the-art change rooms, umpires changerooms - one for field umpires, one for remainingumpires and one for female umpires .District clubs have a lot of local support . On twooccasions this year Glen Eira providedscoreboard attendants for the opposing old boysclubs .

You say the facilities at schoolboys clubs are farsuperior.

You should have a look at them in C grade .Come on down to Glen Eira in 2003 and have abit of good old district club hospitality where ourplayers often stay till closing time.Hopefully, you will take up my invitation, cheersRod D'Ziiva - Glen Etta

SE M I-FINAI. REVIE WLast Saturday's second semi-final between St.John's OC an d Hawthorn certainly lived up tomany people's expectations as far as physicalitygoes. Almost from the get go it was a good, clean, hard contest, with a few scuffles here and there, butnothing untoward for finals footy .

The first quarter was a goal for goal affair with ChrisHorbury snagging two for the JOCs and Hawksfavourite Jackomos getting a few touches (andtouched up) . JOCs finished at quarter time with anarrow with Waters and Scott Hilton among thebetter players for JOCs and Paterson and ChrisReed doing well for the Hawks .

Hawthorn asserted themselves more strongly in thesecond stanza, with Dan Lauletta starting to imposehimself. Stuart Avery also got a good goal from theforward pocket on a tight angle, and Patersoncontinued his good work. For the JOCs, Horburyagain snared two goals, and teammates Emery,Walker, Holmes and Besley were useful contributors, while Scott Hilton was great again .

The Hawks really strengthened their claims in thethird, with players like Carle and Saulle starting tomake their mark, while M . Jones took a few handymarks in the JOCs defence .

A high scoring last term for both teams with StuartAvery opening the scoring for Hawthorn withinseconds, and Lauletta continued to get more goals .Hawthorn started to pile it on, before JOCsgradually stemmed the tide, thanks again to ScottHilton . In the end, Hawthorn recorded a"comfortable" four goal win to clinch a Grand Finalberth and promotion to D2. Congratulations toHawthorn and good luck next week, and in D2 nextseason.

Unfortunately, I wasn't at Sundays game betweenWest Brunswick and Elsternwick, as I waswatching my mate Joel Soft star for MurrayKangaroos against Willy . However, it was WestBrunswick who prevailed on the day, and must nowplay St. John's OC for a Grand Final spot next week.Elsternwick, despite their defeat, should be satisfied.with their overall finish compared with what manypeople must have expected of them. Their upwardmomentum can only be encouraging for next

season .

Again, a reminder to send in nominations (if you

haven't done

so already) for

the D3 Team

Of The Year.Naturally, we would love to hear from each and

every club (we've only heard from about half so

far), and we don't want any excuses about so-and-so not getting a mention, so contact usASAP! The team will be announced in the Grand

Final edition of the D3 report, therefore only one

week left, so hurry!

PRELI M INARY FINAL PREVIE WI anticipate that Saturday's Preliminary Final at

Weatherall Road between St . John's OC and West

Brunswick will be quite an arm wrestle, both

metaphorically and literally . Whoever loses could

certainly be considered unlucky, but the winner

(and indeed the already promoted Hawthorn) would

be no less deserving.

I expect there to be terrific duels all over the ground, but depending on how the teams line up on the day,the best contest to watch may well be between WestBrunswick skipper Adam Cannane and the JOC'sScott Hilton . They may or may not play directly oneach other, but watch for these guys to get a stack ofthe ball out of the middle . The key to either team'ssuccess may well be how much either of theseplayers get the ball for their respective sides, andhow well it is subsequently used . Expect JOCscaptain Clint "Spider" Emery and the Magpies RobWest also to be influential in this context, as shouldJOC's Peter Walker, wherever he lines up.

Another fact to note is that the most potent attack(St. JOC) is up against the stingiest defence (WB). Itwill be interesting to see how the Magpie defence ledby Sam Pietch and Richard Benjamin will handle the

.likes of A .Jones and the dangerous Chris HorburyUp the other end, it is vital for the "bianc et noir's"Steve Benjamin to be in top goalkieking form as the

JOC's defence isn't too shabby either, and the Pies

seem to struggle to match them for forward

firepower. Players like M . Jones, Holmes and Besley

did good things at different parts of last week's game

for the JOCS but will want to be in sync for the whole

game this time around.

At the end of the day though, there must be a winner(whether I get it right is another thing entirely), andat the risk of putting the kiss of death on a fellow

Page 37: The Amateur Footballer, Week 20, 2002

southeastern club, I will be the JOCs by 25 points, their attack should do the job .

Good luck to your club this weekend, and thanks

to all who have sent us information. Anycorrespondence regarding social notes, milestones etc., can be given (ideally by 5pmMonday) to Peter via email [email protected] or Ed viaemail on Ed [email protected] It would be terrific tohear from every team, every week during theseason.

Have a great VAFA weekend! !

_~-- ~--- ~Today we continue our focus on U19 football forseason 2003 .

As a past player, President and now U- 19 Coach ofmy club I have arrived at the conclusion that a wellrun U19 team is essential for senior club success.Whilst this seems logical the process leading to thisconclusion may be different for each club .During the 1990 and 1991 seasons Uni Blues andUni Blacks fielded a combined U- 19 team which lostevery game . During this time Blues Seniors slippedfrom A to B grade and Blacks from B to C and nowD grade.

At the end of the '91 season Max Lyon and JohnMiles in their capacity of developing VAFA juniorfootball expressed deep concern about the plight ofUniversity football and in particular the patheticrecord of our combined juniors .As a result of this meeting Uni Blues made thedecision to run its own U-19's opposed to acombined side run by an ineffectual combinedcommittee . It developed a five year plan to restorethe seniors to a power club in A grade. A formula forU-19 football was also set, we call it the four R's -Resources, Recruitment, Results and Retention .The four R's are very much inter-related. Insuccinct terms :-

Resources comprised personnel, funding andequipment.

Recruitment resulted from having the correctResources as described .Results immediately followed with Uni Blues U-19sfinishing 3rd in 1992 and 4th in 1993 in CentralDivision . We entered Division 1 in 1994 and arecompetitive .Excellent levels of VAFA U-18 and U-19representation have occurred in 1992, 1993 andnow 1994.

Rctention of U- 19 players has resulted from the firstthree R's .

The results of our U-19 program have beenencouraging. In 1992 our seniors just avoidedrelegation to 'C' grade, contributed to by the poor U-19 teams during the previous two, years .In 1993 Uni Blues seniors lost the Preliminary Finaland this year we again are strong . In 1992, 12 U-19's played senior football and in 1993, 11 . In pastyears 1-3 U- 19 players might have been up to seniorstandard. This year of our senior list 22 of 68players played U- 19 football in 92/93 and of that 22,12 have played senior football this year. It is quiteclear that any club appointing an U-19 coach must

ensure he has a clear understanding of the club andits total goals. The relationship between the Senior and U-19 coachis absolutely critical. Grant Williams who coachesour senior side not only knows every U-19 player, where possible he attends training sessions andgames and has an excellent knowledge of the keyplayers. This makes the transition for the U-19player much more comfortable . It is no eouieidencethat under Grant's coaching our senior side hasimproved beyond measure, assisted by his keeninterest and tangible input to our U-19's .Whilst the U-19 coach must never lose perspective ofthe big picture not all decisions are easy . A seniorcoach for example may view the U-19 coach ashaving primary purpose of providing seniorfootballers and not necessarily a successful team .However, to attract good players the team itself mustbe successful as after all, the U-19 player does notconsider the Club's "big picture" he just wants to bein a winning tem . There are only 3 players currentlywith our club who played in our 1991 U- 19s whichfailed to win a game . There are 11 from our 1992side still with the club .It is our experience that Retention of U-19's oncethey reach senior years is much greater from asuccessful U-19 team.

Resources, Recruitment, Results = Retention. As a coach I often say to my players "don't be in ahurry to play senior football, you will be able to dothat for many years but you can play U-19s for onlya limited time". This gives them more time tomature their minds ad bodies playing at a level ofcompetition suitable for their playing development .It also allows them more time to realise theirlimitations and explore their strengths or aptitudes .This may lead to some comments of player retentionlonger than necessary with the U-19 coach puttinghis team success before the senior squad .I am yet to meet a U-19 coach who does notexperience a sense of pride in having one of hisplayers enter senior football.I am an advocate for VAFA U-18 and U-19representative football notwithstanding the teammay lose top players for a vital home and awaygame . The club can only benefit from its youngplayers having the experience of playing at the elitelevel for their age. This would be the only exceptionI allow for individual pursuits over the Wain (andhence club) pursuit .

St. Mary's, after a late charge into the finals, were notable to replicate the form of last season's late bloomers,Swinburne, as they felt to Albert Park. This has now leftthe race to the four teams that many D4 pundits hadpencilled in early in the season .

Nor ;k began the qualifying final full of running, with the brilliant Simon Care in awesome form across thehalf back line on the hard Preston ground . It was in thesecond quarter, however, that the disciplined play that hasbeen Rupea°tswood's trademark this season began to shinethrough . With Matty West once again dominating for Rupo,North were on the back foot and it wasn't until thedangerous James Murphy was able to slip his tags in thethird quarter and combine with Ross Divita in defence andDavid Newton up forward, that North were able to rebound .Rupertswood, however, lifted again in the final quarter andwith Burro~s playing at his brilliant best, the lads fromSunbury overcame North to book a ticket to 2nd Semi-Final ag Werribee with a hard fought five goal victory .

L1 _ ® . : .A LTh came into this match with quite a few questionmarks o% - their heads after two consecutive losses whilethe Sai rere experiencing a great lead into the finals .The first quarter started as an arm wrestle with neitherteam giving anything away . It was the Saints who were firstto score but the Falcons replied with a good goal throughSean Allan . With Albert Park's Dave Overland being giventhe task of tagging St.Mary's prime mover, Gilchrist, andexecuting this to perfection, the Saints forward supply waslimited however. they were quick to take advantage of theirlimited chances to go into the first break two goals ahead .The second quarter saw the Falcons claw back a goal, andwith "Bushy" Hannett and Phil Chambers working thepacks tremendously Albert Park looked ready to strike. Inthe third quarter . Albert Park gained the ascendancy across'the centre and half forward lines and with some strongmarking by Sean Venables and some good run from AriiVlandylaris' the Falcons were able to go into the final change2 goals clear. The tough lead into the finals must have takenits toll on the Saints, because in the final quarter theFalcons took complete control and if not for someinaccurate kicking. the margin may have been greater thanthe eventual 5 goal result .

The first quarter started slowly until the . bert Park gameplan kicked into action and with their forward line workingsmoothly and Nick Pastras creating opportunities theywere able to open up a solid four-goal lead by the end of thequarter. North Brunswick were able to lift in the secondquarter, and with Wayne Duson and Dave Magnusonplaying well, North were able to peg back the margin tothree points at halftime. The Falcons came out full ofrunning after the break and with Adrian Harper controllingthe ruck and Jason Rowe, Brendan Payne and "Captain"

Phillips providingcountless opportunitiesfor their forwards, AlbertPark were able to set upa 4 goal lead going intothe - ial term and e entually ran out five goal winners .

The match between iif:0-17II and Mt. Li2y3ale startedtightly hotivever, it was the students that gained the earlyascendancy and with Creek and the 0'Neills playing well, was able to open up a slender lead at the first break. Mountwas able to lift their work rate in the second quarter toregain the lead by a goal at half time . After the break, thestudents came out with all guns blazing and after two goalsit looked like they were about to nm away with the game, however, Mount were able to lift again through some greatwork in the centre by Kvm Fraser, Jezza Penhale and TrevorHansford to keep their side in the match. After the finalbreak, Mt .Lilydale's Andrew Delahunt took an inspiringmark on the wing and, capping off a sterling performance,Charlie Varga kicked two goals to put his side back in front .The students then kicked a late goal to draw within a fewpis and in a frantic last t--vv minutes Mount were able tocongest the play and hang on by the narrowest of marguis .

The mueh-_t:iticipated rematch of the two D4 heavyweightssees Werribee Amateurs, after a well-deserved week's rest .take on the iii-form Rupertswood for a spot in D3, andmore importantly, a berth in the 2002 Grand Final, Thelast time these two sides met, Rupertswood had the Bee'smeasure, however, Werribee did win narrowly earlier in theyear, and will be hoping to recapture some of that formtoday. For the Bee's to have a chance, they will need tohave their key players in Keogh, Johns and Lovell at theirbest . while Rupo will rely on the great run from Baines .West and Burrows . Werribee go into this match refreshed, howe.vr, the Preston Oval does suit the Rupertswood styl e

of play, and should the weather be mild, their run will betoo much for the Bees as they book a ticket to D3 with an1 i point victory .

,t Semi Final - North Brunswick versus Albert ParkAlbert Park will have been buoyed by their brilliant ivin lastweek against St.Marys, while North on the rebound mayprove a tough proposition . North is set to regain keymidfielder David Pizzari into the side after a recent 'injury .and when combining with the dangerous Care andMurphy. they are looking the goods . Albert Park will onceagain rely on their strong on-ball and fonvard set-up andwill have in the back of their minds the fact that North hasbeaten them twice this season . The Falcons were one of thepre-season favorites, however, North would have to be oneof the biggest improvers and their form suggests that theyshould be too good today as they win a thriller by 8 points .

i Fii al -Werribee versus Albert ParkThe ' rribee reserves team this season has been simplyai . . some, however, one of their two losses for the seasonhas been at the hands of Albert Park . Albert Park's form isalso not to be sneezed at and after last week's solid willshould not be underestimated . The result here is anyone's-"-ess and it will really come down to who wants to winmore . With that said, Werribee have not been tested inret~ nt weeks, whereas Albert Park look to be more matchhardened . Therefore, I am predicting an upset today as theFalcons go through to the Grand Final with a 21-point win .1sY Semi Final- North Brunswick versus Mt . Lilydale OCNorth Brunswick would be very disappointed with bothteams performances last wweek, however, I believe theReserves loss should sting more so, given the teams greatform leading into the final's campaign . Mt .Lilydale, on theother hand, could not be happier with their win last week, and will go into this match chock full of confidence . It isalways difficult to maintain the quality of a reserves teamwhen a senior side is also competing and I believe this maytake its toll today on North as they find the supremelyconfident too hard to hold . Mt .Lilydale for mine by 22 pts.PRESS CORRESPONDENTSThank you for the great response with a report receivedfrom every team (both seniors and reserves) . Perfect football weather met theheavy , ;.its of Section 1 footy - the sun was out and aslight breeze subtly favouring the south end . Bothcoaches seemed quietly confident that today would be

their day. The first 15 minutes was a bruising affair withboth teams testing each other out around the ball .

SKOBS started with the Rock" at FF and O'Keefe atCl1F with the pockets and half forwards playing wideand up the ground. Xavs had Doxey at FF and Sapuppo

at CHF with small forwards close around them. At the

15 minute mark, Coach Brown moved Chard to CHFand O'Keefe to FP or HF (playing mainly deep). Bang!

Instant success - within 8 minutes O'Keefe had kickedthe first 3g, Dempsey marked 1 minute later, and thenAughton roved a ball off HF to snap another. A routlooked in the offing, but then Doxey and Ross booted thelast two to keep them within the ga ne . At the first

change, only l7pts down . The second quarter startedand wthin 28 seconds, Sapuppo snapped from the FP toput them within 1 lpts vvere X.avs back? Answer - no .

SKOBS through O'Keefe and Gissing kicked 7 out of thenext 8 goals and at halftime led by 44pts . The last half

is much the same as the first as SKOBS ran outiers by 62pts. The big difference between the two

s sas not just O'Keefe with his superb 11 majors . Itwas that SKOBS had at least 2-3 players at the ball atevery contest . Outstanding! As well as 15 marks insidethe 45 corridor resulting in goals.

`. Sunday saw another great day for the battle

bet een Old Brighton and Marcellin. These two youngcoaches had their teams champing at the bit to have acrack at each other. Big Smith went to FF for OldBrighton and the late big inclusion of Salce went to FFfor Mareellin . Sheehan of course, went to CHF as usual-

but but his match up was the young gun from school -Mentiplay. The first quarter was a hard fought affairwith the ball moving between both defences at greatpace . At the 18 minute mark both sides had kicked two

goals each; you wondered who would break first . OldBrighton kicked the next 3g through hard, consistentwork inside the 45m corridor all from snaps . The Eagleson-balers started to get on top around stoppages, buttheir delivery into the fortvard line, particularly CHF waswasteful : not to mention their shooting for goal . The

third saw Old Brighton kick the first within 10 seconds,Dignan then replied for Marcellin two minutes later. For

the rest of the quarter (27min) only 3g were kicked, leaving OB's in front by 23pts . The lat quarter was

'fantastic finals football, With Marcel'al and OBs tradinggoals . From the 16 minute mark (OB's last goal),Marcellin continually attacked and by the final sirenhad clawed their way back to within 3pts . Their small

men were outstanding, but the delivery could have been

better. For OByou will need toplay fourquart :rs offoot] !1 to tivin a _

VPoor kicking prob~- i,ly st Old Trinity the opportunity toget clc., .,: to Old ___ ndon than tl did on theweekend . Ten shots to eight at half time told the talewith OT behind and p?°ying catch-up football for theremainder of the dF-- ~ake nothing away from OEGwho. Stormont in everything andDiPictro a' .~ eded experience, appearedin control for J, at part . Scoreboard pressure can bea determizui : ; ' finals the OT will be well awareof this for futur rs . OT were v" erved by Aitken ,Stebbins and -

>v COrmond began 1 11 with the first three goals to set thetone for the day and from here on in Beatunaris had toplay catch-up football . With Muzzell, te Hennepe andArnold leading the way the Monds physical presence atthe ball was the difference . While the dangerous Ferraribagged eight and Wooinough was a handful with two,the Monds defence worked we ll to shut down the rest ofthe Sharks and thus their ability to boot a winninescore . Collins, yVindebank and McNicholas tried in vainto lift their side but in the end it was the :4Sonds wi

t Cr, and Cook prominent who finished the better .I

? - r 2 - . .r ?

Nothing in the game between Old Paradians and OltCamberwell at half time, with a bruising first half alway :the order of the day. Strickland and Spinoso were

, predicted, prominent forwards for OP's while Rya rappeared the only target for the Wellers . After half timtwith Connelly and Harvey thriving in the tough final':atmosphere OPs went up a gear, and while the Weller :Agatonovic, Weaver and Birrell did everything in theipower to avert the scoring thrusts, the OPs hammereihome nine second half goals to six to turn a three poirnhalf time lead into a twenty point win . Could betteikicking by the Lvellers have caused a draw - maybe we 'lknow in two weeks.

i Despite a terriffiely contested first quartebetween Old Carey and Rupertswood, the OC's evenunable to maintain the rage and found themselves do«zat the half. Potter was dominating the forward line fo .Rupo ably assisted by Sullivan and Temming and whilsEvans and Stewart-Holmes were battling hard for OC

their work was going largely unrewarded . After half timethe boys from Sunbury went up a gear and in the fineconditions ran rings around their opponents addingthirteen goals to four in the second half - as was thei r

minanee . Better OC's included Evans and Simson ,' Monzell and Albania stood out for the victors .

The Ajax Ferraris got off the grid fast an dhard leaving the Minardi Blues for dead. The Jackerskicked the first 4g and led by 26pts at the first change .They were quick and taekled hard and well . The Bluesclawed their way back with a 4g second quarter, but stilltrailed by 4pts at the major break. Coach Gracerestructured the side and reminded the boys of theirability and aspirations . Tim Cotter moved to the forwardline . Captain Blood got on top in the ruck and the on-ballers began to run in numbers. Leigh Northway wassensational in the middle, aided by Hickey, Fairley andChapman. At three-quarter time the Blues led by threeand a titanic last quarter looked in the offing . But a;even goal to one last quarter saw the Blues win in aeanter. Indeed, the first Semi Ferraris stalled when it~ unted. Thanks Peter!

While the High through Raleigh, Dunne andAdcock were getting plenty of the footy their forwardthrusts were inaccurate rendering any pressure on thefavourites useless . Garth, Mitchell and Madden upforward were damaging for the Bernies and withJohnson, McManus and Ryan in great touch theyturned at the half with a sizeable lead. They continuedthis trend into the third and remaining quarters to winwell .

Boland for Aquinas was getting plenty of theball and well backed tip by McyiIullen. Sorace andBeech . For the Students Clutterbuck and McDonaldwere trying hard but getting little support . While theefforts of Fanning and Slater were promising. While theBloods led at the half way mark it was anyone's game .In the end the Bloods triumphed in, from all reports, anexcitingly close game despite be .ig d( .oid of muchskilful ill, i -.

forward line . Their run off half back line was good, especially dale but they will have to maintain this andtheir hardness at the ball for four quarters. Xavs on theother hand will need to get more use out of their on-ballers especially Pasceri . If Williams' knee doesn't comeup, the pressure will be greater because Hogarth is infine from in the ruck for OB . Doxey up forward will needto give himself far more room to move to have anychance of kicking a bag full . Don't be surprised ifMentiplay moves forward . Prediction - Old Brighton by8pts!SE CTI ON 2 Old Trinity face a confident Ormond atScanunell with the reward for victory a crack at OldEssendon . They met in round 1 with a strong win to OldTrinity, while in round 10 it was the Mends who finishedthe better. Adrian Connelly has moulded a tough, uncompromising side whose improvement has beenassisted with a sprinkling of youth, experience andtoughness when needed. Their physical presence lastweek was the difference and today it will be required indroves. Old Trinity did not finish second for no reason, they have potent forcvards, a keen and determinedmidfield and backline who's as mean as they come. Onform the Moods will start favourite and although thegame will be close I'm tipping the confidence andphysicality of their more experienced players to set thescene for a two goal win .

SECTION 3 Not much form to go on here with OldCambenvell forfeiting in the first round of matches andin round 12 the Wellers far too strong for Rupertswoodat home . Poor kicking last week cost the Wellers andcoming off a bruising match the scales may well betipped in favour of Rupertswood whose second half lastweek was a run away win. Tempone, Hanson, Warnerand Weaver have been key players for the Wellers allseason and their form will be a good indicator today, addto this mix Ryan, MacCallum and Sigalas, an excellentfmal's record and Rupertswood are up against it . Insaying that Rupo have their own guns that will needcovering, Potter is on fire up forward, Monzell nevergives in, add to this the likes of Plummer, Balmer andMcGovern and this game will go down to the wire. TheWellers final's experience tips me their way today by 4pts .SECTION BLUE Preliminary Final to be played atBentleigh Recreation Reserve on Saturday September 14 .

Grand Final to be played at 2pm at Box Hill City Oval,Box Hill . 2pm.

SECTION RED MHSOB and Aquinas have met onthree occasions this season with the scales tipped infavour of the High 2I1 . The Bloods only victory by l pt inthe middle of the season. Should be a ripper of a gameconsidering the miserly defence of the Bloods and thepotent forwardline of the High . The Bloods will need allguns blazing to match the High, they will need to keepRaleigh, Adcock, Gervaux and Sierakowski in check, andhave plenty of support for the likes of Beech, Kogelman,Tappley and Sorace. If the Bloods can get their kickingboots on they should be able to kick a winning score, butin saying that the High have matchwinners on every lineand will need to be closely guarded. In a thriller Aquinasby 4pts .
