Roger Mavity

We were very pleased to welcome Roger Mavity into school on 3rd November to speak to Year 11 and Sixth

Form students. Roger spoke to students about his career in advertising, setting up his own agency and then his Chief Executive and Chairman roles with the Granada

Group, Citigate and Conran Group. He also described his most recent work as a writer (‘Life’s A Pitch’ and ‘The

Rulebreaker’s Book of Business’) and photographer. He finished with some sound advice on interviews and writing a CV. Students commented: ‘He made me realise that you

don’t have to choose just one career’ and ‘when you fail, it’s not the end of the world but a chance to learn from

that and move on to something even better’. Many thanks to the charity, ‘Speakers for Schools’ who sponsored the

event.

Please remember if you are signing in your child late or bringing them back to school after an appointment, to

visit the reception area first.

World War Treasure Hunt Winners Congratulations to Gemma Stevenson 9SI who has won the Library's World War 1 treasure hunt and to Hannah Greaney 8MZ who correctly spotted that the plastic buttons had no place in a World War 1 display.

Halloween Cupcakes

Miss Stoner ran an hour and half Halloween cupcake workshop before the end of the first half term. Students made butternut

squash flavoured sponge, this made the muffins moist and sweet especially with the

touch of cinnamon. They then decorated them with a real

chocolate topping and piped white icing and experimented with a

feathering techniques to create a web effect.

All students enjoyed the workshop

Gold Stars of the week is a reward system where teachers nominate students for working consistently at Gold standard which is above and beyond expectations. Students then have the opportunity to meet with the Headship team to discuss their achievements and work.

The students are rewarded with 25 credits and a well done letter to take home to share their success with parents/guardians. We feel this is an excellent reward system for the students to share their success with the Headship team.

Congratulations to Charlotte Stacey 9SC, Jamie Rivett 7HA and Lily Stimpson 7HA who were Gold

Stars of the Week for Week 9.

fusty

adjective smelling stale, damp, or stuffy. "the fusty odour of decay" old-fashioned in attitude or style. "grammar in the classroom became a fusty notion" Etymology: Probably alteration of Middle English foisted, foist musty, from foist wine cask, from Anglo-French fust, fuist wood, tree trunk, cask, from Medieval Latin fustis. First Known Use: 14th century Foreign translations: French: de renfermé German: verschimmelt Spanish: rancio Czech: plesnivý

Solution to last week’s challenge : The pyramid has 2n edges and n+1 faces, so the required difference is 2n−(n+1), that is n−1. Can you solve this week’s problem ? After playing 500 games, my success rate at Spider Solitaire is 49%. Assuming I win every game from now on, how many extra games do I need to play in order that my success rate increases to 50%?

Things To Remember

AEROSOLS ARE BANNED AT SCHOOL

This is a reminder that aerosol deodorants, hairsprays etc are not allowed in school. We must insist that these are not brought onto the school site.

LEAVING THE SCHOOL SITE AT LUNCHTIME

We prefer all students to stay on school site at lunchtime. This is safer for them and they can see friends and attend the many clubs on offer. In special circumstances permission to leave will be considered but permission must be requested from the Year Team Leader.

REMINDER

A reminder to all students to use the footbridge or Toucan crossing to safely cross the A259. It is dangerous to dodge cars whilst crossing the road.

Feeling Unwell?

A reminder to students and parents that if students feel unwell in lessons they must ask their teacher if they can go to the medical room and the medical staff will decide if the student should go

home. Parents - if students telephone you to collect them as they feel unwell please remind them they must go to the medical room.

PARKING ISSUES As the weather worsens more parents might consider driving students to school or

collecting them. Please try to minimise these journeys to reduce congestion. If you do have to drive students to school please share lifts as much as possible.

We are also concerned for our neighbours not only during the school day but also when there are evening events at the school. Please do not obstruct their drives or any of the nearby roads.

Please do not park on the roundabout at the front of school, on the yellow lines or in the bus lane. This blocks the flow of traffic and causes congestion.

The Highway Code Rule 243 DO NOT stop or park:

near a school entrance

anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services at or near a bus or tram stop or taxi rank

on the approach to a level crossing/tramway crossing opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking

space near the brow of a hill or hump bridge

opposite a traffic island or (if this would cause an obstruction) another parked vehicle where you would force other traffic to enter a tram lane

where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehi-cles

in front of an entrance to a property on a bend
