    Abstract

This document examines the various strategies adopted by Qurayshi pagans in an attempt to

thwart the Mission of the Messenger of Allah. Furthermore, this paper makes a comparison

between those destructive tendencies and the methods employed by contemporary enemies of

Islam more than 1400 years later.

Qurayshi Anti-Islamic Strategies against the Mission of the Prophet of Allah

    Introduction:

They wonder that a Warner, one of their own, has come to them. The unbelievers

say, This is a lying sorcerer(1)! Has he made the gods One God (2)? This is

    really a thing of surprise(3)

    ! Their leaders trot away(4)

    , Walk away and remain

steadfast to your gods! For this is really a thing of speculation(5)

    . We never

heard this in the recent creed (6). What! Has the Reminder been sent to him out of

    us(7)

    ? (Quraan, 38:4-8).

    The Different Strategies Employed

    False Propaganda:

(1)The Messenger of Allah who prior to his commission was declared the Trustworthy

    1

and well known for speaking the truth2

    was all of a sudden a liar, insane3, a sorcerer, in a

bid to raise questions concerning his intellect and create doubts in the minds of the ever-

    increasing number of would-be converts4.

1Heraclius asked Abu Sufyan, Does he break his promises? Abu Sufyan replied, No. (Bukhari, 1.6, pg 10)

2Have you ever accused him of lying before his claim (to be a Prophet)? No. (ibid)

3Jibril did not come to the Prophet (for some time), so one of the Quraysh women said, His satan has deserted

    him. ( pg 261)

    Zndel, E. (2001), pg 5

4Heraclius asked Abu Sufyan, Are his followers increasing or decreasing (daily)? Abu Sufyan replied, They are

    increasing. (Bukhari, 1.6)

Now, the psychological warfare against Islam employs the same tactics to demean

Muslims. Muslims are labelled extremists, Islamists, terrorists, fundamentalists, purists,

Wahhabis, rag-heads, people who live in the middle ages, etc.

    Sycophancy:

    (2)The pagans disbelief in Ar-Rahmaan

5and in the Prophethood of Muhammad was not a

hindrance to them seeking to benefit from his Dua (Supplications) to Ar-Rahmaan on their

    behalf6.

    Restrictions On Worship:

    (3)(5)

Public display of Ibaadah (Worship) was severely censored

    7

    on the allegation that

Muslims acted on unfounded information. In many countries, the Muslim attire is frowned at as

extremism and hostile. Several countries have banned the wearing of niqab (face veil) in public

under the guise that it degrades women. This time the enforcers are atheists, non-Muslims as

well as nominal or cultural Muslims.

5Abdur-Rahmaan bin `Auf said, I got an agreement written between me and Umaiya bin Khalaf When I

mentioned the word Ar-Rahmaan (one of Allahs Names) in the documents, Umaiya said, I do not know Ar-

    Rahmaan. (Bukhari, 3.498)

6When Quraysh delayed in embracing Islam, the Prophet invoked Allahs Curse on them, so they were afflicted

with a (famine) year because of which many of them died and they ate carcasses. Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet

and said, O Muhammad! You came to order people to keep good relations with kith and kin and your nation is

being destroyed, so invoke Allah. Allah's Messenger prayed for them and it rained (Bukhari, 2.133).

7Quraysh leaders said, Advise Abu Bakr to worship his Lord in his house and to pray and read what he liked and

not to hurt us and not to do these things publicly, for we fear that our sons and women may follow him. (Bukhari,

    3.494, page 523).

    Aggression and Torture:

(4)The leaders of Quraysh exercised immense powers over Muslims; they had Muslims

    tortured8

and enjoyed doing so9, much as the present day captors of innocent Muslims who

express amusement at the treatment meted out to Muslims - waterboarding, sleep deprivation,

exposure to the elements, caging, etc.

    Out of Touch with Events:

(6)Belief systems are not novel to us, but what you invite us to is. These days it is the

opposite; Muslims are heavily criticised for clinging to the past and for living in the middle-

    ages.

    Elitism:

(7)The fact that of all the eminent citizens of Quraysh, the prestige of Prophethood was

accorded to a young man, an orphan at that, poor and of little consequence10

    was unthinkable to

the Quraysh. Now, some heads of state often boast about being the largest donor of financial aid

    to impoverished Muslim nations.

8The Prophet was offering prayers at the Kabah and Abu Jahl was sitting there with some of his companions. One

of them said, Who amongst you will bring the abdominal contents of a camel of Bani (the family of) so and so and

put it on the back of Muhammad? A wretched man got up and did it. (Bukhari, 1.24, pg 71)

9They started laughing and falling on one another. (ibid)

10Abu-Sufyan said in response to Heraclius question, It is the poor who follow him. (Bukhari, 1.6, pg 10)

    Expulsion:

Muslims were banished11 from Makkah and were permitted re-entry only under the

protection of lenient powerful pagan Chiefs12

    .

    Conclusion:

The Quraysh utilised a number of methods to interrupt the blossoming of Islam, many of

which are just as lethal as present-day strategies against Islam, despite the claim that this era is

    one of humanity and civility.

11When the Muslims were persecuted, Abu Bakr set out for Ethiopia as an emigrant. He met Ibn AdDaghna, the

chief of the Qara tribe, who asked Abu Bakr, Where are you going? Abu Bakr said, My people have expelled me

from the country and I would like to tour the world and worship my Lord . (Bukhari, 3.494, pg 523)

12Ibn Ad-Daghna said, I am your protector. Go back and worship your Lord at your home. He went along with

Abu Bakr to the chiefs of Quraysh and told them, A man like Abu Bakr will not leave, nor will he be expelled. Do

you expel a man who helps the poor earn their living, keeps good relations with kith and kin, helps the disabled,

provides guests with food and shelter, and helps the people during their troubles? So, Quraysh allowed Ibn

AdDaghna's guarantee of protection and told Abu Bakr that he was secure. (Ibid)
