HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman
god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the
world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,
Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the
Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star
Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.
Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.
We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in
our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.
The Anvil, Issue 258, is the monthly newsletter of
the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The
International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms
and phrases from Star Trek are owned by
Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of
Paramount Communications and all rights are
reserved.

Greetings, Sorry for the lateness of this issue. I became sick at the beginning of the month and I am now just getting better.
Region 2 Summit is coming up March 8-10. It is to be held at Muscle Shoals, AL. The summit is a fun time to get with other Star Trek fans and discus Star Trek and other Sci-Fi programs. It also provides ideas for parties and socials. Here is the website: http://secondfleet.org/Summit2013/ Hope to see you there.
We are always looking for ideas for activities at our socials. If you think of something you think the group would be interested in, let us hear it. We have 8 socials that we can plug it into. I say 8 because 3 of the socials are the April cookout, The Captains Cookout and Fall Feast. Also January will have been done by the time you receive this. So please send us your idea either at my email address below or look for us on Facebook.
If you have any topics of interest you would like to see in the newsletter send your articles or updates to [email protected].
As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

Did you happen to see the trailer for the new Star Trek movie “Into The Darkness” during the Super Bowl? The new
movie looks exciting. I hope it is as fast-paced as the first one is. It’s due out in May, the 17th I think.
Yes, I did watch the Super Bowl, mainly to see the commercials. Some I didn’t like, but my favorite ad was the one
with the Clydesdale horses. I think those horses are beautiful. But, enough about the game & commercials.
Remember the Region 2 Summit is coming up March 8-10 in North Alabama. I’m sure there are still rooms available
at the hotel. Check out the web site for more information.
Also we have our Spring Cookout coming up the second weekend in April. Check the Anvil for more details as they
become available.
That’s all this month. See you at the social/meeting.

We played the new Munchkin Apocalypse. It was a hard fought battle with Brenda almost winning except for a play error that led to Pete winning. After that we played Bite Me with Brenda winning the game. She didn’t receive even one bite! Fun time was had by all.
Attendance: 14 people.
Personnel Updates:
If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: [email protected].
SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,
The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get
the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be
Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primary Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff.
Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.

SSttaarr TTrreekk NNeewwss Star Trek: Into Darkness.
The new Star Trek movie Star Trek: Into Darkness will be coming out May 17th, 2013. This movie
will be in 2D, 3D and Imax 3D. The movie was shot in 2D and then will be converted in to 3D. J.J
Abrams is directing with Chris Pine(Kirk), Zachary Quinto(Spock), Zoe Saldana(Uhura), Karl
Urban(Bones), Simon Pegg(Scotty), Anton Yelchin(Chekov), John Cho(Sulu) & Bruce
Greenwood(Pike), reprising their roles. Other actors in the film include Benedict Cumberbatch(better
know as BBC Sherlock), Peter Weller(from Robo Cop), and Alice Eve. You can see a first look in a
featurette that Paramount released on February 18, 2013. I could not find a good Web address but you
can google Star Trek Featurette and you will get a good sample to choose from.
Theater event for Star Trek: TNG “Best of both Worlds”
CBS Home Entertainment & Fathom Events will be showing the feature-length “Best of Both
Worlds” in theaters, April 25 at 7pm. This coincides with the release of the Blu-ray DVD of “Best of
Both Worlds” and Season 3 of Star Trek: The Next Generation. “Best of Both Worlds” is the 2-part
cliffhanger involving the Borg that bridges Seasons 3 & 4. The theater experience will also include a
quick look at some of the behind the scenes special features that will be on the “Best of Both Worlds”
Blu-ray DVD.
J.J Abrams, William Shatner and Star Wars…
At the end of January, the Walt Disney Co. announced they are getting J.J Abrams to direct the
up coming Star Wars Episode VII. The Walt Disney Co. acquired the Star Wars property in October of
2012. Recently, William Shatner (our beloved Capt. Kirk) said J.J. Abrams was “being a pig”. He was
referring to the fact that Mr. Abrams is collecting the two franchises (Star Trek & Star Wars) and
holding them close to the vest. As Mr. Shatner went on to say that he might have to take Mr. Abrams
out for sushi so that he can set Mr. Abrams straight on doing both of the franchises and not having him,
Mr. Shatner, in either of them. In his opinion, Mr. Shatner said, “I think is just foolhardy.” So I guess
we will be seeing William Shatner in the next Star Wars film.
