President's MessageTime is flying by and it’s April already! I heard that the March demo at Grizzly Iron was a great demo. I

was told that Grizz and Shawn did an amazing job of entertaining and informing everyone and Iunfortunately missed it. I think I had a good reason though, my wife and I had our second child just a coupledays before the demo. Our son Henry was born on March 15 and he and mom are happy and healthy.

If you missed this demo as well, don’t fret! We have a lot more to come this year. Steve Miller has beenworking hard at lining up some great demonstrators. This year’s line up throughout the year is impressive,to say the least. So let’s support Steve. The best way to do this is to show up to the demos. You don’t wantto regret missing these amazing demonstrators who are coming to us. Normally you would need to travelthousands of miles to meet or learn from these demonstrators, and we have an amazing opportunity withthem coming to Arizona. I hope to see you at the next demonstration!

Keep the forges lit and the hammers swinging!

Our May Demonstrator: Brian Brown“I am a full time blacksmith living and working in the mountains of Montana. I have been blacksmithingand creating artistic metal works for years, with various areas of focus, starting in the ABS with hand forgedknives. After a career as a custom saddle maker, I moved into making forged saddle fittings and buckles. This led to spur making which has been my primary focus for the last few years. I still do a few full rigs andforge all of the fittings myself, to include mounted shooting rigs, cowboy action gear and custom spurs formany pro bull and bronc riders as well as arena ropers. I am developing my skills as an engraver currentlywith the hopes to master the art to be able to provide hand engraving to my customers.”

Review by Steve Miller

Secrets of the Forge by Antonello Rizzo has numerous interesting projects with full color photos. This isnot a basic how-to or step-by-step for the unexperienced smith. It does, however, provide the process for an

intermediate to advanced smith to also create these items and more. Due to the low contrast between anviland work piece in some photos, you’ll need to study them a bit to fully understand what is being shown.Mostly, the photos show good detail and don’t use up space on the simpler processes.

Some of the things I learned from this book include the need to use cotton gloves to handle a heat patinaitem before it is sealed to keep skin oils from discoloring the patina. I also found several items I want tomake for myself such as the Liberty Scroll, Calla Lily, Snail, knothole, and, well, perhaps all of them. Here’s a list of other items that intrigued me.

° Blacksmiths are resourceful. Using partially open vice jaws to add a wavy shape to an edge in lieu ofmaking a bottom swage was a trick I’ve never seen before. It might just get you by in a pinch.

° Adding a spiral to round tubing was also interesting and relatively simple.- Decorating the edges of a piece with a hollow punch makes an exquisite piece that would otherwise be

comparatively boring.- Drawing out a rose thorn on a stem and shaping it to a point so that it is all 1 piece is something I’m

still trying to master.

Secrets of the Forge inspired me to try some new ideas and refined some old ones providing some

additional options.Happy Forging

Mesa Community College Expands Blacksmithing ProgramJamie Escobedo

The Mesa Community College WeldingTechnology Program at the Southern and DobsonCampus started the Basic Blacksmithing and MetalShaping course (WLD-103) in 2004 with just one 3

credit class offering on Saturdays as a requiredcourse for an Associate in Applied Science Degree inWelding. Long time AABA member Jaime Escobedostarted the program with just four propane forges, l0anvils, two leg Vises, and an assortment of tongs. Thecourse consisted of, and still consists of, severalbasic techniques covered in a variety of proj ectsspecifically selected to teach these techniques. Thecourse quickly became popular and consistentlyfilled with up to 20 plus students per semester.

The overwhelming response and requirement ofthis course eventually lead to the opening of a secondcourse offering on Tuesday and Thursday eveningswith Dan Jennings in 2009. Dan has a long historywith AABA and is responsible for many of the plansand articles that have appeared in our Anvil’s Hornnewsletter and website. For several years he was theeditor of the Anvil’s Horn and an AABA boardmember. Dan is well known for his wide rangingtechnical abilities and fine forgings that have graced

the pages of our newsletters, and contributions to our

annual Read Carlock Memorial Scholarship Auction. For the Fall 2019 course offerings, MCC will

once again be expanding the Basic Blacksmithingand Metal Shaping course with a class section duringthe day on Wednesdays with our very own RichardRozinski. Rich is a very talented metal artist who hasmastered several art disciplines to create his uniquepieces. He co—chairs the AABA Winterfest, sits on

the AABA Board of Directors, and is the creator ofthe tool filled Lost Dutchman’s Treasure Chest. Yes,that Rich Rozinski! Rich’s talents, background, andeasy going manner will lend themselves well toteaching this course and imparting his vastknowledge to the students fortunate enough to enrollin his course. Jaime and Dan welcome Rich to MCCblacksmithing community and look forward toworking with him.

The Basic Blacksmithing and Metal ShapingCourses (WLD-103) fill up quickly, so registeringearly is highly recommended. Below is theinformation to register for one of the classes for theFall 2019 semester:

Interesting Web LinksWood Forge Fire Management - First Lessons Series from Whitlox Forge

http://tinyurl.com/y3rj72ad or https://www.y0utube.c0m/watch?v=OVzyE7exH0I&feature=youtu.beCharcoal was the fuel of choice, or of necessity, for blacksmiths for thousands of years. In this video

they're talking about making your own charcoal in a manner similar to the way you make coke from greencoal. This is about using wood that you get by picking up scrap lumber, cutting down trees on yourproperty, or buying from a lumber yard - although that can get a bit expensive. Charcoal is less dense thancoal, so you have to feed the fire more often, but charcoal generally burns cleaner than coal, it certainlyburns hot enough to weld, and you get less ash and klinker than you do with coal. It does produce more

sparks, but fire management is similar to a coal fire, and a hood over your forge helps to minimize the sparkclouds. And, as coal dealers becomes harder and harder to find, charcoal may become the preferred fuel forsome of us.

This video is well done. The individual video clips are well composed and edited together in a

professional manner, and the speaker focuses on information instead of blathering on like too many"instructional" videos today.

Tenon Forging Table by Len Ledet

Recently Mo and I had an upscale railing (in conjunction with Phoenix Forge) to construct. Each picket required a tenon on each end. The pickets were forged utilizing 5/8 inch squarebars. First step was to calculate the length of bar needed to forge the required tenon. I hadmade this calculation on other occasions (volume of bar and volume of cylinder). Why have tomake the calculation each time‘? Why not construct a handy TABLE and make it easy to deter-mine the bar forging length. The table below includes bar sizes 1/2, 5/8. 314, and 1 inch. withvarying tcnon diameters and lengths. Hope this makes this calculation easier. Please note. I

suggest you always construct a sample for the tenon to verify the forging process.
