She also asks herself how the native residents of Arjeplog react to the fact that they have to accommodate temporarily so many people during the winter months.

She has visited Arjeplog twice. She also likes to follow Arjeplog through the webcam by the market square. Her impressions were very intense and she has felt related to the region ever since. ‘Refugium’ will hit the shelves in Germany in October.

‘Blida’ is the local name for warm weather in winter and it often causes ice tracks to be closed and people to go to hospital. For those who love snow-mobiliing or skiing in the forest this past week’s warm weather came as a welcome blessing. Blida in the middle of winter is seldom positive for the reindeer herding Saami people.
Even though people start talking about climate change when it is unseasonably warm, this is quite normal, albeit an irritating weather change for some.
At the time of writing this story (last Wednesday) most of the ice tracks in the area are closed in order to prevent serious damage to the tracks and we hear of stressed and irritated engineers com-plaining that they cannot do their work.
Th ose arranging events might quite easily get an ulcer trying to solve the prob-lems of not being able to be on the frozen lakes.
Warm Weather Not So UnusualWe hear people complaining that it
is hard to walk on the slippery roads and pavements and many fall and hurt themselves. It is also dangerous when snow and ice fall from the roof tops.
Olof Jonas Nutti, a Saami who works with reindeer, says that blida is nearly always a bad thing for them because when the the snow freezes again and becomes ice, the reindeer cannot dig down to fi nd food.
However, this skare or hard frozen snow is something that skiers and snow-mobile drivers are looking forward to. Skare topped with soft, new snow is a dream condition if you like to move around easily in the forest or in the mountains.
Th e warm weather causes the snow to melt and when this freezes again, it becomes very slippery.

Th e landscape is fantastic and I hope to see the northern lights.
What is bad in Arjeplog?My wife is not here with me.
Also, the food in the supermarket seems expensive compared to Munich.
And the fi nes that the Police give you if you do not stop at a stop sign or drive too fast are much higher than in Munich.
It also feels far from everywhere, far from a large city where you can get and do everything.
What music you enjoy?Alternative rock and metal.
What is important in life?My family - and most important are my wife and my twin brother.
It is important to be open, to trust people and to be loyal. Also, to tell the truth.

Cleaning at Hatten can be Fun
Erika Lundahl, Joel Bäckström, Niklas Rosvall, Hanna Th elberg, Adrian Olsson, Albin Sjöhed and Cecilia Östlund relaxing after work at Hotell Silverhatten.
A fun thing that turned out to be better than expected. Last spring a group of friends fi nished their schooling in Gävle (a town north of Stockholm). Some of them had no plans for the future and a few had temporary work.
One day Adrian Olsson’s mother asked if they wanted to go to Lapland to work in a hotel. Adrian’s mother is a friend of Sanna Sund, the manager of Silverhatten Hotell.
Th e seven young people accepted without really knowing what they were getting into. Th ey said that they had seen Gävle for 19 years and needed a change.
Four of them are going to participate in Vasaloppet (a 90-km ski race this weekend) and needed to practice skiing. Arjeplog is a good place to prepare for that.
Th ey think that being in Arjeplog turned out to be better than they expected. Th ey also say that it feels very unusual to live so far away from a city and because there is a limited number of things one can do here, they have played a lot of games and skied a fair amount.
Hanna works in the reception at Silverhatten and the oth-ers are part of the cleaning crew. Th ey say that it is a boring job but they have a lot of fun together.
When asked what they will do next winter they said, “Th ailand”.

I am a security guard, and have worked there since it was opened 10 years ago. Before it was opened, I also worked there, building the facilities.
In the summer months I work with building materials at Granns, Järnia hardware shop.
Favourite food: Everyday Swedish food and my favourite is probably moose meat (which I hunt). I also like spicy Th ai food. My wife is from Th ailand and I have learned to eat food from there.
Spare-time activities: I work a lot and do not have so much spare time. If I have time in the winter, I go snow-mobiling. In the summer I drive my motorcycle when I have time.
What’s good in Arjeplog?Th e surrounding nature. Th ere is very little crime here and it is a good place for children to grow up.
What’s bad in Arjeplog?I do not like the cold summers.
What music do you listen to?Melodious hard rock. For example, Alter Bridge.
What’s important in life? To be healthy is important. It is good to have work and to be able to support yourself and your family. It is important to take life as it comes and not to take everything so seriously.

Erland Sundström is making a sculp-ture that will be used for one day only. When big events take place at BOSCH in Vaitoudden they call the security guard Erland Sundström to provide the local touch in the decoration.
Erland has just fi nished making a bust of Jürgen Zechmann, who will be resigning from BOSCH this spring.
Zechmann’s nose fell off - but Erland fi xed it(Read about him in last week’s issue, nr 8, of Th e Arjeplog Times).
It is not easy to be an ice sculpture artist. Erland doubles as the resident ice artist for ATM and has been involved in several ice and snow decorations.
When he was asked to make something special for Zechmann, he decided to make a sculpture of ice. He has been working on a bust of Jürgen Zechmann but he has had some problems.
He explains that he thought it was a nice challenge and at fi rst he did not even see what it was going to look like. Th en the weather turned and it became so warm that Zechmann’s nose fell off .
Using available high tech at Vaitoudden, Erland put the retiree in a freezing chamber and could remodel his nose. Th e sculpture was then put outside the large tent that BOSCH has on the ice tracks.
We hope the Zechmann iceman sur-vived the heat wave currently irritating ice makers and car testers alike.

Last Friday there was a fi re in a block of fl ats in Arjeplog. This casts a different light on the suggestion of cutbacks of the rescue service.A local couple put a pot of water to boil on the stove. In the pot there were baby bottles made of plastic that they wanted to sterilise. Th en they went out and forgot all about it. Th e pot burned dry and the bottles started to burn, causing a fi re in the fl at.
At about 2 o’clock in the afternoon the neighbours heard the fi re alarm system and called the fi re brigade. Twelve fi re-men battled with the fi re and managed to reduce the damage to the one fl at only. Th e other eleven fl ats in the building only suff ered minor smoke damage.
As it happens, right now, politicians and rescue personnel are in the midst of discussions concerning cutbacks in the rescue service, in order to save money. And this fi re has given them food for thought.
Today, the fi re brigade in Arjeplog consists of fi ve groups of fi ve people in each group, who take turns to be on duty. Th ey are all part time rescue personnel and have other jobs as well.
Th ere are also three people, including the fi re chief, Hans Erik Jonsson, who work full-time in the rescue service.
If there is a fi re or accident, at least seven people respond to the emergency. Th e cutback plan will reduce this group to fi ve people which Chief Jonsson believes is not enough.
Fire Casts a Different Light on Cutback Proposal
In this building there was a fi re last Friday. Th e building was saved thanks to twelve skilled rescue workers who responded swiftly. With less personnel the whole building might have been lost.
Last Friday’s fi re is an example of how dangerous it could be if the number of people in the rescue service were reduced.
Hans-Erik Jonsson explained that they were very lucky that this fi re happened in the middle of the day and that they had a full dozen rescue workers closeby, otherwise the whole building might have burned down.
With only fi ve people in the fi re brigade, the outcome of the fi re could have been very diff erent.
Ida Marie Westerlund refused to move to a big city to get work. She was determined to stay in the place where she was born, a place she loves and where she has everything she wants. So she opened IM Tattooing in Jutis, also known as Moose village, 39 km from the town of Arjeplog.
Today, Ida Marie has a lot of work and custom-ers come from far and near to have their bodies decorated by this talented 22-year-old local.
When Ida Marie was young she made drawings and paintings for friends and family, she loved fantasy monsters. One day her father, Sölve, saw a program about tattooing on TV and told her that this could be something for her. Ida Marie had plans to become a vet, but the thought of seven
Ida Marie’s Job is to Put Needles in your Skinyears’ of studying made her give up the idea. A friend of her boy-friend, from Holland agreed to teach her the basics of tattooing and she is now running her own show ‘in the middle of nowhere’.
She says that she likes doing her own designs but the customer decides. Mostly people start with names of their children or someone they love, others prefer famous quotes.
In the beginning she was nervous that she would make a mistake but now she enjoys a challenge. She charges by the hour and she is very pleased that tattooing is like a drug for many people; once you start, you want more and more.
Tattooing is very popular in Sweden. What used to be the trade-mark of criminals can now seen on men and women from all walks of life.
Ida Marie is very careful to use the best possible inks and disposable needles. She says most people do not fi nd it very painful but she admits that the tattoo on her shoulder did hurt a bit.
