Ice Fishing, a New Event in Arjeplog Sports fishing is the number one pastime activity in Sweden and now a local company is offering different kinds of fishing experi- ences. Last week, two Koreans, two French and one German national tried ice fishing in a small lake, formerly known as ‘Bosch-tjänna’ because it is situated near Vaito- udden, just off the Silver Road. Mr Philip from Mobis was the most successful of the group. He caught a few abborrar (perch in English, Hecht in German), but the really big ones got away. He is not new to fishing in general but ice fishing was a first for him and he was very happy trying to catch fish through a hole in the ice. Janne Fjellström part-owner of A-Event and Fish Shop, says that they have planted lots of trout in this particular lake as well as a couple of 4-kilo rainbow trouts, for trophy fish. This & ThatSweden’s Central Bank or Riksbanken, presented Sweden’s new banknotes and coins last week.
In 2015 and 2016, Sweden will start using new banknotes and coins. Th ey will have a completely new appearance and there will also be a new denomi-nation: a 200-krona banknote.
Sweden has not had a new banknote series for 30 years. In addition, a 2-krona coin will be issued again, for the fi rst time since 1971.
For the fi rst time in modern Swedish history, all banknotes and coins will be changed, except for the 10-krona coin.
Safe and effi cient cash“We are pleased to be able to present the new banknotes and coins which will provide Sweden with safe and effi cient cash for many years to come.
Th ese banknotes will take us on an exciting cultural journey from Birgit Nilsson and the Öresund Bridge in the south to Dag Hammarskjöld and the Th ree-Country Cairn in the north”, says Stefan Ingves, head of the Riksbank.
Sweden’s New Banknotes and CoinsTh e new banknotes are smaller than the current ones and have completely new motifs. On the bank notes you can see some of Sweden’s foremost cultural personalities from the 20th century.
Th e banknotes have new security features providing better protection against counterfeiting.
One new feature is that the bank-notes can be tilted to check that they are genuine. Th is is because they have images that change colour and images that move and shift between motifs.
New CoinsTh e new coins will be smaller and weigh half as much as the present ones. In addition, they are completely nickel-free. Th e coins have King Carl XVI Gustav as motif.
A parallel theme is “sun, wind and water”. Th e 10-krona coin will remain unchanged.
Four of the new banknotes will arrive in October this year, with the remaining two and the coins in October 2016.
Th e old notes and coins will still be valid for a period of time.

She does not have time to celebrate now but Alf promises a big party in the summer.
He also said that without his wife, Bente, their company, Cartest would collapse. Th e work she does is often hidden to most people, but she makes sure that everything runs smoothly and is invaluable.
• If you are planning to drive to Norway, check the sign on the side of the Silver Road by the industrial area, which tells you if the road is closed due to bad weather. Th ere is also a sign by the turn-off to Laisvall.
• Next weekend, Friday March 5-Sunday March 7 the traditional winter market will be held in Arjeplog.

Th e streets in the centre of the town will be closed off to traffi c the whole weekend from Th ursday, March 4.
• At the moment, people are having problems fi nding accommodation in Arjeplog and the surrounding areas.
Most of the hotels, private homes and apartments seem to be fully booked. Besides being high season for the winter testing, it is school holidays as well as the winter market next weekend.
However, after the market, there will be more accommodation available and if you can change your visit to after next weekend, it will be much easier to fi nd a place to stay.

Married? No, I am not married yet, but I have a boyfriend, Alexander.
Home: Ludwigsburg, near Stuttgart, Germany.
I also feel very at home here in Arjeplog. I stay here 10-12 weeks every season and this is my 6th winter.
When I arrive at the beginning of the season I feel like I am home.
Company: Porsche.
Occupation: I am the facility and workshop man-ager for winter testing in Arjeplog.
I am actually an architect and started working for Porsche when I got the job of designing the workshop.When the facility was expanded here in Arjeplog, they needed someone to manage it and and I got the job.
I like working with the car testers and I love my job and would not want to do anything else. We are two women, Nicola and I, who arrange the logistics, the fl ights, accommodation etc in Arjeplog and we also see to it that the cars are here at the right time, and so on.
Favourite food: Italian food and in Arjeplog I like to eat moose fi llet. And of course I love Schwäbisch food such as Linsen und Spätzle (lentils and special noodles).
Dream car: I love our Porsche Cayman, that is my dream car.
Present car: Mini Cooper, light brown in colour.

Spare time activities: I spend time with my family, my boyfriend and friends. I play billiards and love walking in Nature, in the forests and by lakes.
My boyfriend’s family live near Bodensee (Lake Constance, in English) and we often drive there on weekends.
In Arjeplog, I do not have so much spare time, but I like cooking, playing cards and walking when the weather is good.
I also need to just relax in my spare time here.
What is good in Arjeplog?Almost everything is good here. Th e houses are so beautiful, it is almost hard to believe how wonderful they are. We never believed that people really lived in houses like these. We are so happy to be able to rent private homes and it feels good to give something back to the community. Th e people are so courageous, starting businesses, being able to solve all the problems that arise and they are not shy to try anything.
Th e locals are also so close together and that makes for a good feeling here.
I also love the silence.
What is bad in Arjeplog?Nothing, really, at the moment.
For my colleagues and I, Arjeplog is perfect the way it is, for what we are doing here. And in our spare time we can do sports or go to Harrys.
I do miss the German brunch that Nelly’s Cafe used to have.
What music you enjoy?Everything that you can dance to. I also like to listen to slow, soul music and pop music. It depends on my mood. I do not like heavy metal.
I also like the Swedish singer Robin.
What is important in life?To be okay with yourself, to be happy with what you have. Th en you can agree with others. I am happy, specially when I am up here.
It is important to know that where there is light, there will be shadows. It is good to accept mistakes and learn lessons from them.
And, of course, family and friends are important.
When asked how it is to work in a man’s dominated world, Patricia explains that in the beginning there were some small wars to fi ght. However, now women are encouraged to prove themselves and there is another kind of acceptance.
She also believes that it is positive with a woman administrator and she knows that the colleagues fi nd it easier sometimes to talk to a woman (rather than to another man) as she does not compete with them and does not pose a threat.

Emil is Head of the Municipal Technical Offi ceTekniska kontoret, as it is called in Swed-ish, is responsible for looking after the streets, roads, traffi c, water and sewerage and parks and their job also includes the production and distribution of district heating.
Emil Sundström is a 43-year-old local man, who recently got the job of run-ning the technical departement of the Kommun.
Th ere are six people working for this department, and they hire companies to do the various jobs, for example clearing the snow from the roads in the winter months and cutting the grass and watering the plants and fl owers in the summer.
Th ey also plan, design, build and maintain municpal buildings such as the sports centre and schools.
High Quality WaterArjeplog is supplied with drinking water directly from Lake Hornavan which is purifi ed only by UV light and sand fi lters. Th anks to the high quality of the water, there is no need for chlorination.
Waste-water is treated mechanically, chemically and biologically before it is checked and released from sewage treatment plants and infi ltration facilities.
Waste ManagementAll waste must be sorted and taken care of in the best possible way. To facilitate waste management there is a recycling yard in the industrial area, where paper, glass, plastic, appliances, combustible bulky waste and garden waste can be left. Th ere are also environmental stations in the town as well as in Jäckvik, Laisvall, Adolfström, Mellanström and Slagnäs. Now, scrap cars can also be left without cost at the recycling centre or Återvinninggården.

Occupation: I own A-Event and Fish Shop together with Janne Fjellström. I work part time in the shop which is open in the winter. I also help with events (see page 1 & 6).
I also work 75% as a home health care giver or hemsamarit in Swedish where I have worked for over 20 years.
We help individuals, often older people, with daily tasks such as bath-ing, eating, cleaning the home and preparing meals.
Th is care helps them stay at home versus living in a facility.
Favourite food: I like all food but I think fi sh is best, especially local fi sh. My favourite is abborre (perch).
Dream car: A Mercedes, any model.
Present car: I have a dark grey/blue Volvo XC 70. It is reliable and gets me where I want to go.

Spare-time activities: I train a lot, outdoors. I run with our dog when the weather permits.
In winter I go cross country skiing either on one of the illuminated ski tracks or on the lakes.
I like to be with my family in my spare time. In the summer we go out on the boat and we go fi shing. It is a nice way to be outdoors in Nature.
What’s good in Arjeplog/?Th e best thing is that life is so varied here, because of the diff erent seasons of the year.
Of course, you have to enjoy the outdoor activities in each season such as skiing and snow-mobiling in winter, and boating and fi shing in the sum-mer. Th en it is seldom boring.
If you love the outdoor life, then you will enjoy living here.
Th e car testing industry is very good, it provides lots of jobs and we appre-ciate the many restaurants, hotels, activities and service (especially in the winter months) that exist because of the many car testers that are here.
What’s bad in Arjeplog?Arjeplog is a little too far away from a large town, for example where the big hospitals are situated.
Th e problem with cuts in health care and the fact that there is no doctor on call at night or on weekends is not good.
What music do you listen to?I listen to all kinds of music, it depends on my mood and on the atmosphere.
One of my favourites is Bruce Springsteen.
What’s important in life? Of course it is important to be healthy and that my family and I are fi ne.
Besides that, it is important to have the opportunity to develop and to do things that you enjoy.

In shallow water it is possible to peep into the hole and actually see the fi sh swimming past and sometimes even when it takes a bite. At least, that is how it is, in theory.
Fika is always goodAs with all fi shing, patience and perseverance is the key to success. If your patience runs out, you can always have something to eat and drink or fi ka, as it is called in Swedish, which is a big part of the whole trip. Th is part of the ice fi shing experience is especially good if the sun is shining. And lying on a reindeer hide on the ice, lapping up the sun after a long, dark winter while waiting for the fi sh to bite, completes this spare time activity that many locals long for.
On this particular day Alex Lest-ander and his father Ingemar drilled many holes so that their guests would have a fair chance of fi nding the fi sh. During the hour that we visited them, a handful of perch was landed on the ice, but none of a nobler kind.
In spite of its popularity, it has been hard to fi nd good local guides for those who want to try fi shing in the waters around Arjeplog but now Janne Fjellström together with Pernilla and Ingemar Lestander are determined to develop a new kind of experience for visitors, both in the summer and the winter. Th eir company, A-Event and Fish arrange fi shing trips and other activities and have taken over Lena’s Fish shop.
