Allmänningen (an association that owns common land collectively) in Arjeplog hopes to build a hydro-electric plant in the river area of Arjeplog. There have been wide-spread protests locally and in the whole of Sweden. Now the authorities have given the go-ahead for the project that will possibly only produce enough electricity for 100 houses.
The reason for the protests is that the rivers around Arjeplog are considered to be some of the finest sports fishing grounds in Sweden and there are concerns that a new power station will severely threaten the spawning areas of the rare trouts and grayling.
Every year many large brown trout and grayling are caught (and often released) in the numerous rivers around the town.
The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, the Asso-ciation of Sports fishermen and Älvräddarna (Association to save Rivers) are some of the organizations that have tried to stop this project. Hundreds of locals have signed protest lists saying that the project does not take into account that the rivers are a great resource for the people living here as well as for tourists, because these fishing areas are so popular and well-known. The protests have been strong, but to no avail, it seems.
Håkan Ederlöf from Galtis is the chairman of the Allmänning Association and they hope to start building the new power plant next year. According to calculations, each member of the association will only receive 800 SEK annually. That shows how little one of Sweden’s most
famous trout fishing rivers is worth. It also gives the feeling that Swedish society does not value the preservation of the last remaining unspoiled wilderness.
Some people even consider moving from Arjeplog in protest of what they say will be the destruction of the Arjeplog rivers.

The first step to what might eventually become a large multi-fuel tank station was taken on Tuesday when the mayor, Britta Flinkfeldt Jans-son proudly cut the tape opening the first gas and hydrogen

In order to keep Arjeplog on top of the winter testing map it is important that the infra- structure is up to date and that is where a multi-fuel station comes in.
The local press was told that winter testing will certainly change from what it is today, so plans for the future must be made, or Arjeplog might be overtaken.
At the press conference Anders showed the new (rented) gas and hydrogen station, for the first time. He said that it is impossible to imagine that this will ever be profitable on its own, but he is thinking about the future of Arjeplog.
“So now it is open for business”, he declared. Fixar’n (The Fixer) went ahead on his own but now he
has caught the interest of the government.“We have received about 300,000 SEK to use for this
first step towards an exciting future,” said Eva Quist who

I enjoy the challenge of designing algorithms for various cars.
Favourite food: Italian food: pasta, pizza and lasagne. I also like fish and salads.
Dream car: Mercedes SLS, red, convertible which will soon be on the market.
Present car: We have 3 cars. VM Sharan van, VW Polo and a Mercedes Smart 42.
Spare time activities: My favourite hobby is running and I run 2 marathons a year, in spring and in autumn. I have run marathons in Berlin, Hamburg, paris and Vienna.
I spend my spare time keeping fit and run at least 30-40 km a week.
I try and run in Arjeplog as well, at least 10 km every second day but here my limit is minus 30°C. I use a neopren mask when it is minus 15-20°C , when it is colder than that, my eyelashes freeze and get heavy.
I also use special spiked running shoes here for arctic weather.
Sport is very important for our family and we go cycling, downhill
skiing, swimming and mountain-biking together. We also go on camping trips together.
What is good in Arjeplog?The good opportunities here to do sports and to go cross country skiing. The Nature is wonderful.
The fact that you can drink water straight from the tap is fantastic.
The people are friendly. Arjeplog is nice, I have been here every winter for 21 years, about 7-8 weeks a year, so I have been here for nearly 3 years altogether.
What is bad in Arjeplog?The distance to my famly is not good. I don’t like it when it gets colder than minus 25°C.
Otherwise, I have no complaints, Arjeplog is charming as it is.
What music you enjoy?The music on the radio. I like classic rock music, ACDC, Queen.
At Christmas time we listen to classical music, it is calming and fine for that time of the year.
What is important in life?Family and health. I think it is important to be and stay fit. Respect for other people and for Nature is important

This week, the inauguration took place of Arje-plog’s first hydrogen station. So far we only have access to a mobile fuelling station, but hopefully we will have a permanent multi-fuel station in Arjeplog in the foreseeable future. It feels so good that Arjeplog is in the front edge of the development of new fuels. We have already been discussing - although a bit loosely - that the engine pre-heaters that already exist here and that we use to keep our cars running smoothly in the winter, can be seen as a unique advantage for the testing area that Arjeplog is.
We have the infrastructure necessary for electric cars, although they are perhaps not quite correctly equipped. To now be able to offer first hydrogen and eventually all kinds of fossil-free fuels is important. Sometimes we have difficulties, in our own country, to make people understand our unique situation. We are a very small municipality that almost doubles its population during the winter months. This leads to very unique business opportunities.
However, sometimes the authorities are totally unaware of what is happening here. Many of the members of the Swedish parliament are amazed when we tell them about what happens here in the winter and when we show them photographs.
Only when they have been here for a visit, do they understand that Arjeplog is not just a tiny, remote place in the country but a place filled with optimism and eagerness to develop further.
You, the people who are testing here, are an important part of our development. When you demand development and involve us in your thoughts and ideas, we get unique opportunities to move forward. Sometimes we will have to slow down and say no, but most of the time we do

Meet Tyrone Stenlund, Mathörnan – this week’s local
Name: Tyrone Stenlund
Age: 57
Family: Wife Ami, son Jimmy.
Home: Arjeplog, I have lived here for over 30 years. I grew up in Arvidsjaur.
Occupation: I am a forestry engineer and work for a private company from May to November in the forests between Arjeplog and Skellefteå.
My job is to plan for harvesting the timber as well as for future plantations in terms of methods and types of wood.
The bad thing about this job is that I am away from home so much during this peroiod.
From December to April, during the winter months, I work as a waiter at Mathörnan, which I also enjoy very much. I like the good contact I have with our customers.
At Mathörnan we place emphasis on good food and friendly contact with our guests in a cosy atmosphere.
Favourite food: Reindeer, moose meat and fish.
My favourite 3-course meal is: snails in garlic for starters; a main dish of roast reindeer meat (rensadel) and my favourite dessert is cloudberries (hjortron) with whipped cream.
Dream car: Saab 95 Aero. My wife Ami can choose the colour.
Tyrone Stenlund, Mathörnan
Present car: I have almost always driven Saabs. We have a blue Saab 900 from 1987. We have 5 Saabs, two that are run-ning and three for spare parts.
I am a good Saab mechanic and can fix everything in the Saab, especially in the older models.
Spare-time activities: Fishing, mostly in the summer, but sometimes also in the winter. In summer I fish for pleasure and I also
take part in competitions. I hunt and also like bird-watching
and other outdoor activities, espe-cially with my family. We often go for walks.
I play in a jazz band here in Arjeplog. We practise once a week and sometime we play at a hotel or restaurant or some occasion.
What’s good in ArjeplogFirst of all, the surrounding Nature which is a fantastic mosaic of forests, land and waterways.
The lakes, rivers and streams here are very special and we are sur-rounded by a large amount of pure, clean water.
What’s bad in Arjeplog? It is not so easy to find things that are bad here, I have chosen to live here because of all the good things.
The only thing I can think of is perhaps that the number of cultural activities are limited. However, we have learned to travel to other places to take part in these activities. Living here makes you not so afraid of distances.
What music do you listen to?I listen to a lot of jazz from 40’s, 50’s and 60’s and I also enjoy the music of Van Morrison and Keith Jarrett.
What’s important in life? To be healthy and to have a good family relationship is very important.
I think it is important to have spare time activities that are meaningful as well as work that you enjoy.

• The moose calf whose mother died a few weeks ago after a unsuccessful
rescue attempt by the rescue services in Arjeplog (see The ArjeplogTimes nr 2), seems to have survived.
The calf was heard crying for its mother near the lake where she died for a few days after the incident but now it has been seen in the ‘Lugnet’ area near Fiskarvägen (street).

Markku Alén is proud that Ferrari wants to make use of his backside to develop their new car.
The former rally and race car driver has both the knowledge and a feeling for how a car should perform. This is vital to the finish-ing touches of the latest Ferrari model soon to be on the market.
“We are hoping to make a fantastic car,” said Markku, when he was in Arjeplog last week.
The new Ferrari is the first 4x4 from the company and it has a lot of power, which Markku likes very much, ”the more horsepower, the more fun”, he says.
Modern cars are developed with computers and skilled engineers, but sometimes the feeling is forgotten.
“That is where I come in”, he explained with a laugh “they like my backside.”
Markku describes his work with Ferrari as a family affair. He loves it and says it is particularly important to make the car perform well when it is slippery because safety on the roads is essential.
Markku Alén, who comes from Finland, drove for Fiat, Lancia, Subaru and Toyota in the World Rally Championship and still holds the record for most stage wins in the series.
Alén won the FIA Cup for Drivers in 1978, the precursor to the World Championship for Drivers established in 1979.
Markku has also been involved in many accidents but fortunately has never been hurt seriously.
He has a long history together with the Fiat Group and retired from com-peting in 1995. Aside from normal rally, Alén also successfully drove an Iveco truck in the Dakar rally.
snow. Regular snow-mobiles have great problems in such conditions, but the RX1 Turbo rears out of the water like a powerful horse. Nothing seems to be able to stop it.
Kristian Stridsberg keeps a low pro-file. He does not want to exaggerate the performance of his snow-mobile and he doesn’t have to.
It goes from zero to 100 kph on packed snow in two and a half second, after six seconds the speed reaches 180 kph and it goes on and on.
Once he tried going as fast as he possibly could and according to the speedometer he was driving 250 kph, “but you can’t trust the speedometer”, he said while putting on a new drive belt.
There is a price to pay if you are ‘king of the hill’.
