Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On May 6, the City of Aiken rescinded its mandatory requirement for masks in retail and commercial establishments, while not prohibit individual businesses from requiring them. Churches, as religious institutions, have been exempt; however, we have followed the lead of our Bishop, who has strongly encouraged many things for parishes, including especially face coverings since we gather a great number of people under one roof.
For St. Mary’s: At this time and until we get further direction from our Bishop, I’m asking everyone to please stay the course and please wear your face covering for Mass. We have been making wonderful, incremental steps to return to normal. Like so many, I look forward to a day soon with Masses without face coverings. Doing this will keep us in step with the other large parishes of our diocese. We can offer up the slight inconvenience, praying that it won’t be much longer!
Mark your calendars – Monday, May 24 is the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians. We will have a special Mass that evening at 5:30pm. Come, pray for our parish!
We are in the midst of the powerful Novena to the Holy Spirit from Friday, May 14 to Saturday, May 22. This marks the nine intervening days between Our Lord’s Ascension into heaven and the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples gathered in the Upper Room at Pentecost. Extra copies of the booklet with the daily prayers can be found on the tables in the narthex.
Today, we celebrate the transferred Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. (In most dioceses in the United States, this celebration is moved from its normal home on Thursday to the closest Sunday.) The Ascension “completes” the Resurrection as Christ’s risen, glorified, human body is now forever joined to the eternal, infinite Godhead. This is our own destiny when Christ “will raise these lowly bodies of ours to be like His own, glorified body” (Philippians 3:21). We profess this privileged future in our Creed when we proclaim that we “believe in the resurrection of the dead” (that’s you and me), when Christ will come again, raise and transform us to be like Himself. Mankind has found an everlasting place in the heart of God.
Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you so that where I am, you also may be” (Jn 14:3). This is followed by a sublime assurance, “I shall not leave you orphans” (Jn 14:18).
“Two promises are thus made, one for eternity, the other for time. First there is the gift of everlasting life, then the capacity to endure even this life. Each locked in the treasury of Holy Church, Christ’s spotless Bride, whose keys unlock all the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven” (Regis Martin, 2013).
Come, Holy Spirit! Father Wilson
Padre Wilson

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Grades 4K—5
Mrs. Mary Ellen Jackson [email protected]; Phone: 803.642.2676
Dear Parents of K – 5th graders 1. May challenge – get to know and imitate Mary. Although it is not mentioned specifically in scripture, traditionally Mary is believed to have been present at the Ascension. Look at our Ascension window which is by the confessional on Joseph’s side. Mary had been present when Jesus died on the cross, and now she is watching him ascend into Heaven. This time, she knows she will see him again – in the flesh. This week make a point to pray for all those in your family who have died, and think and talk about how you will meet them again, God willing, in the next life, the next glorious life. 2. Continue working on your CCD/Catechism books 3. Looking Ahead: Totus Tuus week is July 26-30. More information will be in the bulletin closer to this exciting catechetical program for youth in grades 1 – 6. Older volunteers (7th grade – adults) are needed as well. 4. Sra.
Regístrese en www.formed.org/signup, ingrese a Aiken, SC, luego elija St. mary Help of Christians.

2021 — the Year of St. Joseph
Blessed Gabriele Allegra: “St. Joseph sweetly and continuously stimulates us to love, serve, and imitate the Queen of his heart, the Immaculate Mother of Jesus.” To think about: Fr. Benedict Groeschel used to say that it must have been hard for St. Joseph to live with the Son of God and a sinless woman – if there was ever a disagreement he would be wrong, and this may be why in scripture he didn’t say a word. In truth, Joseph probably did follow Mary’s lead in many things. We should also love Mary and imitate her in her love of Jesus.

St. Mary’s Wheelchair Express is a service before and after Masses that we offered before COVID. Wheelchair drivers are stationed at the drop-off curb in front of the church for thirty minutes prior to Mass for those who need a lift from the car to their pew, and back again after Mass. We would like to resume a limited Wheelchair Express serving the 8:30 and 11:00am Sunday Masses, but we need volunteers to do so, especially for the 11:00am Mass. If you would like to become a driver for the Wheelchair Express, please contact Donna Pierce at [email protected] or 803-552-7714. Patrons must be able to transfer themselves in and out of the wheelchair, but you must be strong enough to push them up the handicap ramp.
Also, for those who would like to use our Wheelchair Express in order to attend the 8:30 or 11:00 Mass, we can arrange it by personal appointment until we hopefully have it up and running beginning in June, depending on the response for volunteers. For the 8:30 Mass please contact Linda at [email protected], and for the 11:00 Mass please contact Donna at [email protected] or 803.552.7714.

Bringing the faith into the home, The
Domestic Church
Today is the Feast of the Ascension (traditionally last Thursday). After the ascension, the apostles and Mary prayed in the Upper Room, waiting for the Holy Spirit to come; this was the first novena ever! This week pray in a special way that the Holy Spirit will enter your family and each member of your family in an active way. Invite the Holy Spirit to work powerfully through your family and each member. In particular, pray that your family can in some way share the message of Jesus within your own circle of neighbors, friends, etc. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age. “ ~ Matthew 28:19
