President’s Address KITANO, Seigo, Japan (2014-2016)

It is my great honor to be elected as the President of Asian-Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (APSDE) during the APDW Meeting in 2014 as I have appointed as Prof. Chao’s successor until 2016 as he has appointed as an honorary president. Thanks to Prof. William Chao's strong leadership, APSDE has grown to be such a successful society. The training courses we have conducted every year since 2004 are very popular among Asian doctors, and we are glad to be of their help. This is all by virtue of Prof. Chao’s tremendous contribution and commitment, and we are proud of taking over his enthusiasm. As the President of APSDE, I will try my very best to help society members whenever they have any problems and would like to contribute to the development of the activities of APSDE. I hope we Asian countries can be united as one family to promote the advancement of digestive endoscopy and gastroenterology. I am very confident that the activities of APSDE can contribute to many doctors in Asian-Pacific countries for the development of skills and knowledges. I hope APSDE continues to make rapid progress and to play an active part in this area. Hope to see you all in any APSDE activities such as a hands-on training course and in the coming APDW2016 at Kobe, Japan in November.

It is with the greatest pleasure that Seventh Bulletin has been published. The publication required a lot of hard work and I appreciate Prof. Kitano’s efforts on it. Looking back on his term as President, I cannot help but be impressed with his achievements over the past 2 years. He especially made considerable efforts toward education, such as train-the-trainers workshops and organizing therapeutic endoscopy symposia in various countries, e.g. Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar. Taking this opportunity, I would like to give a big thanks to his team and our members for their efforts on education training.

Hon. President’s Address

Vice-President’s Address

TAJIRI, Hisao, Japan (2014-2016)

Professor William Chao, Hon. President of APSDE & Professor Seigo Kitano, President of APSDE, showing us a strong leadership not only in organizing the society but also in training of the Asian local trainers. As witnessed by many, APSDE has gained a rapid growing and world reputation since its foundation in 1973. At present, we have members from 19 countries (Afghanistan, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam).

In particular, APSDE-hands-on training courses are the major eye-opening events whenever / wherever organized in Asia.

As the Chair of the Education Committee of APSDE, I am very honored and pleased to have played an essential role to support the local organizers to host various hands-on courses in selection of venues and instructors among many candidate cities and experts. More importantly, in 2016, APSDE and Olympus agreed to establish an exclusive program aiming at training and raising the future endoscopists with excellent skills in endoscopy who can contribute to the regional activity. The program called “APSDE Indochina Regional Training Program” includes both Training Workshop and Train-the-Trainers courses in Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand. Through this program, we expect the penetration of GI endoscopy via trainers of this program training the selected local trainers, and the local trainers training the endoscopists in their home countries.

The future of APSDE is promising!!

Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy Gastrointestinal endoscopy was first introduced from Japan into China around 1970 used Fiberoptic Endoscopy. Subsequently the Japanese doctors went to China to teach Endoscopy in 1975. From 1973 ERCP was introduced to China by Dr. Chen Min- zhang, who was the Minister of Ministry of Public Health of China. Around 1985 they intended to establish the Endoscopy Society which was not allowed during that time. After over 3 years struggle, with the help of Dr. William S.C. Chao to negotiate with the Authority explaining the importance of having an independent Endoscopy Society, then China Society of Digestive Endoscopy (CSDE) was finally established in 1989 in Beijing. Dr. Chao promised to organize a joint International Meeting between Hong Kong Society of Digestive Endoscopy and Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy in every 2 years. Since then during the last 20 years, 10 joint International Meetings have been organized.

During the establishment, the President of CSDE was Dr. ZHANG Jin-kun, then Dr. YU Zhong-lin and Dr. ZHANG QI-lian, Dr. LI Zhao-shen and the current President is Dr. Zhan Shu-tian. All of them made great efforts to improve the wide application of gastrointestinal endoscopy in China. With the commitment of these Chinese endoscopists, the application of gastrointestinal endoscopy was widely available in China and much experience had been accumulated in the management of various digestive diseases.

With help of Dr. William S.C. Chao and Hong Kong Society of Digestive Endoscopy, the 1st Global Chinese Conference on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 2005 (GCCGE 2005) was held in Shanghai, China from November 10 to 12, 2005. The GCCGE 2005 had gathered the leading experts in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy such as Drs. William S.C. Chao, Nib Soehendra, Joseph Leung, Sydney C.S. Chung, Lok Tio, Joseph Sung, Yang. K. Chen, Kenneth Chang, and others. Thousands of Chinese endoscopists benefited from this training model and became leaders in their local centers. The 2nd Global Chinese Conference on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 2009 (GCCGE 2009) was also held in Shanghai with great success.

CSDE and other three Chinese societies (Chinese Society of Surgery, Chinese Society of Hepatology, and Chinese Society of Gastroenterology) successfully took the host of the 2013 Asian Pacific Digestive Week and World Congress of Gastroenterology (APDW/WGO) jointly.

Macau Society of Digestive Endoscopy

Macau Society of Digestive Endoscopy (MSDE) was founded in 2012 and with around 100 members up to this summer. We are committed to serve as a platform for the education and exchange of experiences among our medical and nursing colleagues working in the Endoscopy services. Since the use of digestive endoscopy started off in the early 60s of last century as a diagnostic tool. With the steadfast dedication of our predecessors, endoscopy has become an indispensable tool for the standard treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases. The recent integration with conventional surgery, laparoscopy and even robots had further taken the potential application of digestive endoscopy to another exciting level.

Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology & Hepatology

The Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (MSGH) encompass all GI endoscopy activities in the country. The Society was founded in the early1990s and was originally known as the Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of Malaysia. .It was registered as an independent Society in 1995 as the Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The Malaysian Society officially joined the APSDE in 1996 when Professor KL Goh assumed the position of President of the Malaysian Society. He has remained as a councilor of the APSDE since that time.

Amongst the highlights is the annual live endoscopy workshop which has been organized in conjunction with the University of Malaya Medical Centre since 1993. These workshops have grown from strength to strength and are now considered a truly top class international workshop.

Through these high profile workshops, the Malaysian fraternity has been able to establish international contacts throughout the world. In 2008, the Endoscopy Unit of the University of Malaya Medical Centre received the highest accolade by being accorded the prestigious title of “OMED/WEO Centre of Excellence” by the OMED/WEO governing Council. This has now been extended from 2015 to 2020.

Our biggest event involving the APSDE was as one of the four co-organizing assertions in the Asian Pacific Digestive Week 2010 held from 19th to 22ndSeptember 2010, with the theme: “Gastroenterology in the Asia Pacific- Excellence in the New Decade”. This meeting was held at the impressive Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre situated by the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. A heavy endoscopy program was held with two days of live endoscopy workshop and a pre-congress “Endoscopy Directors Workshop” organized together with the WEO and the APSDE chaired by Professor ATR Axon and Professor WSC Chao.

The Malaysian Society continues to be very active in our activities in GI Endoscopy. One of the newer activities that we have been involved is the Endoscopy Telemedicine organized in conjunction with several medical centers in the Asia Pacific area and throughout the world and headed by the TEMDEC in Kyushu chaired by Professor S Shimuzu. Currently, Dr SH Ho helms these meetings in Malaysia and at the University of Malaya Medical Center and is co-chair of the Endoscopic Club E-conference (ECE) club.

New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology Incorporated

In 1966, several years before the widespread introduction of endoscopy, the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology (NZSG) was formed. Whilst NZSG was originally formed to promote the study and practice of Gastroenterology in New Zealand, over recent years there has been an increasing requirement for the Society, in partnership with the RACP, to be responsible for advanced training in Gastroenterology. The Society, in conjunction with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Royal Australasian College of Surgeons is also responsible for the Conjoint Committee for Endoscopy Training. One of the biggest challenges facing NZSG at present is the introduction of a Colorectal Cancer Screening Program. New Zealand has the highest incidence of colorectal cancer in the world. Each year there are around 1200 deaths from colorectal cancer and 2700 new cases diagnosed. International experience would suggest this death rate could be reduced by as much as 15% with the implementation of a screening programme. However, it is a huge task to introduce a screening programme. Colonoscopy volumes alone will probably increase by 50%. For any screening programme to be effective a very high standard has to be maintained, particularly with respect to diagnostic procedures. The NZSG is aware of this and in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, New Zealand is running “Train the Trainer” workshops to ensure a high standard of training is achieved. From its inception, the NZSG has fostered research and educational and travel grants as well as research support are offered, usually in conjunction with Industry sponsorship. The NZSG Annual Scientific Meeting, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Society will be held 23 - 25 November at the Claudelands Event Centre, Hamilton. The Society encourages and welcomes all international Gastroenterology practitioners to attend this event. For further information on this Annual Scientific Meeting, please visit www.gastro2016.co.nz.

The Sri Lanka Society of Gastroenterology The Gastroenterological & Digestive Endoscopy Society of Sri Lanka (DGESSL) was formed under the auspices guidance of Prof. Nakayama (Japan) during his first visit to Sri Lanka in 1965. The founder president was Dr. D F de Silva. A new era in Gastroenterology was dawned in Sri Lanka when the first fibro optic Gastroduodenoscopy was performed in 1983 by Prof. Dayasiri Fernando at the Colombo South Hospital. He then went on to establish the very first Endoscopy unit in the country with the setting up of the Endoscopy unit attached to the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine in 1984. Meanwhile Dr. Nihal Markus started practicing Medical Gasroenterology on his return to the country following a specialized training in UK. His sudden demise saw a major draw back in Medical Gastroenterology in this country. However, Surgical Gastroenterology continued to thrive under the patronage of Prof. Dayasiri Fernando who saw the Postgraduate institute of Medicine of Sri Lanka recognizing the Surgical Gastroenterology as a specialty in 1993. This was followed by the recognition of Medical Gastroenterology in late 1990s. Today Medical & Surgical Gastroenterology units have been set up in all the major Hospitals (3 in Colombo, one in Kandy & Galle each). The DGESSL has a membership over 120 & continue to expand as the membership is open to all medical specialties with special interest in Gastroenterology related diseases. The Annual event of the society is the academic session combined with workshops & Nihal Marcus oration. Our vision is to promote Gastroenterology in Sri Lanka to match the standards of the developed countries. Recently, the name of the society has been changed to The Sri Lanka Society of Gastroenterology.

Thai Association for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (TAGE)

The Thai Association for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (TAGE) has been found in 2005

by a working group in GI endoscopy sharing by Gastroenterologists and Surgeons. The aims of the society are to conduct teaching, research and service to all member endoscopists and other practitioners. The society has conducted an international Live-

Demonstration in GI endoscopy for 14 years consecutively (the first meeting was

conducted even before it formed a society). There have been more than 100 world renounced endoscopists from around the word being invited to the course as guest endoscopists and speakers. The meeting has grown up year by year with the

largest amount of attendants this year for more than 400. To support and teach our practitioners, the society has conducted a hand-on workshop

in many provinces of Thailand quarterly. In addition to the standard hand-on workshop it also has conducted a popular advanced workshop for the international delegates annually. Many advanced GI procedures have been performed including double

balloon endoscopy, metallic stenting, therapeutic EUS and ERCP in pig models. To broaden their members and others knowledge, TAGE has published 3 volumes of “Practical GI Endoscopy” in Thai and recently TAGE has produced 7 sets of “ATLAST in GI Endoscopy” in English. Those who are interested in these are welcome to

download our books from our website www.thaitage.com.

TAGE is accounted as one of the national society members of the ASPDE and has been working with others Asian-Pacific Societies all along. We are very proud to be a

part of the team.
