Bulletin Deadlines

My good friends in Christ Jesus:

We know from Roman mythology that the month of January gets its name from Janus, the ancient Roman god of doors and gates. Janus has a distinctive artistic appearance in that he is commonly depicted with two faces...one regarding what is behind and the other looking toward what lies ahead. Thus, Janus is representative of contemplation on the happenings of an old year while looking forward to the new.

Because of Janus’ place in the Roman pantheon, it seemed natural to the Romans to name the first month of the civil year after him. (You’ll remember that the Church’s liturgical year began with the first Sunday of Advent). We certainly no longer worship the pagan gods of ancient Rome but the name January has remained on our calendar.

Perhaps we can learn something from this mythological figure. His double countenance of facing forward and backward at the same time reflects how we might approach the coming of each new year. Before we venture into the gift of this new year we pause and examine out last year. We remember our successes and failures. We call to mind our happiest moments and our sad times. We might especially examine our spiritual life. How have I grown with God in the past year?

I believe that a follower of Christ is called to look at the past and find the blessings present in our lives. It is easy to identify the bless-ings that came during good times, but our faith challenges us to recognize the blessings that have come to us from our difficult times. When we learn to identify the blessings that have come in many forms then our hearts are filled with gratitude.

This practice of looking backward might also help us to identify where I have failed or fallen short in my life with God. Perhaps I need to take responsibility for the lack of effort on my part to let God grow in me. This calls for repentance and new resolutions. Maybe I need to make a trip to the confessional. A great gift of our faith is the message that our God is ever ready to make “all things new” (Rv 21:5). God is ready to help us. I invite you to take a moment and express your gratitude to God for the blessings in your life. I also challenge you to make new year’s resolutions in regards to your faith life. How can I better practice my Catholic faith? How can I take advantage of the full sacramental life of the Church (confession & going to mass)? Look forward to the new year, and bring Christ and his Church to the center of your resolutions. Then together let us see what a good year it will be with God at the center! Have a happy and holy New Year

You should have receive your January/February envelopes in the mail by now. This process will help us keep our census up to date and hopefully will help those of us who lose our box! Now we will get a

new one every few months. If you do not receive the envelopes in the mail, please check with the office. We may have the wrong address for you – or we may not have you officially registered.

Did you get your envelopes?

We have posted it in the main entrance of the church and have made copies available there. As you finalize your gift giving - would you consider getting your parish a Christmas present? We have some larger gifts and some smaller ones. If you like one of the large gifts and can only pay part of it – that is fine. We will collect as much as we are able to enhance the life of our parish liturgy. If you would like to give a gift – please mark your check or put it in a plain envelope. List the gift to which you are contributing. We’ll publish a report of which gifts we were able to purchase from our wish list.

If you or a family member is in the hospital and would like a visit from one of our priests – please call the office. We do not always know when people have been admitted. Many lay volunteers and ministers regularly visit the hospital to distribute communion so

we do try and be present to our parishioners through their ministry.

In the hospital?

Thank you

During these winter months please take care when walking around our facility – especially when there is snow and ice. We have many steps and many places where ice tends to form. Please notice that we have put snow shovels and ice/snow-melt near many of our en-trances. Near these items there is also a clip board with

a form. If you are kind enough to help remove snow – or to spread the ice-melt we ask that you please record what you did and the time you did it. This helps us with our Catholic Mutual insurance company requirements.

We have almost come to the end of our efforts to get the Somali family launched in the USA and Grand Island. We will be there if they need us, but now we begin to back off and let them “fly “on their own. We will have a monthly visit follow up between now and April and will have some ongoing contact to let them know we are here to help if called upon. Per the chairperson Richard Hoffman report, we did a very good job and more importantly did what the Lord asked of us. Thank you to all who donated items for the family household, they are greatly appreciated. We will continue to take donations for goods until further notice for our future refugees. We now have storage space available for furniture. Please call Ann Baker with the Thrift Store or bring smaller items to the Church office. Thank you again for your generosity. Kena Zebert

PASSIONS We should employ our passions in the service of life, not spend life in the service of our passions. —Richard Steele

The best quote that represents Al-Anon is ‘Say what you mean, mean what you say, don’t say it mean’. If anyone has experienced drama during the holidays, chances are you have been around an active alcoholic relative. Al-Anon members do not give direction or advice to other members. Instead, they share their personal experiences and stories, strength and hope. The best place to learn how Al-Anon/Alateen works is at a meeting in your local community. Members invite other members to “take what you like and leave the rest”, that is, to determine for themselves what lesson they could apply to their own lives. A significant other can affect our emotional well-being, for better or for worse. Problem drinking can make life extremely difficult for the non-drinking partner. Personal contact is an important element in the healing process. Many Al-Anon members have come to understand how their current life situation was affected by their experience growing up in a home where a parent had a drinking problem. It is not usual to see inter-generational effects of alcoholism, where grandparents, parents and children are all affected by a family member’s drinking. One of the most difficult challenges in life is trying to cope with a child’s problem with alcohol and drugs. Many people come to Al-Anon for the support and understanding they need to handle this heart breaking situation. When adult children have problems with alcohol, it is natural to be concerned about grandchildren. An increasing number of grandparents are finding support and understanding in the Al-Anon Family group. Alcoholism has a negative ripple effect for all concerned. But Al-Anon has the same ripple effect when the active member brings serenity in the alcoholic home. If you have questions if Al-Anon is for you call the Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism for a meeting list near you @ 308-385-5520. Ref: Al Anon Family groups.org

Sunday: Mary, the Holy Mother of God; The Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord; World Day of Prayer for Peace; New Year’s Day Monday: Ss. Today Readings First Reading — The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Numbers 6:22-27). Psalm — May God bless us in his mercy (Psalm 67). Second Reading — God sent the Spirit of the Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave but an heir, through God (Galatians 4:4-7). Gospel — The shepherds glorified and praised God for all they had heard and seen (Luke 2:16-21).

The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness.

Thoughts THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE

“Perhaps one of your friends has become pregnant unexpectedly. … Your support might be the only support she receives. Word of Life

Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

January 1, 2017

From the writings of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

“Looking at Mary, how can we, her children, fail to let

the aspiration to beauty, goodness and purity of heart be aroused in us? Her heavenly candor draws us to God, helping us to overcome the temptation to live a mediocre life composed of compromises with evil, and directs us decisively towards the authentic good that is the source of joy.” – Angelus, December 8, 2005

“Dear friends, what an immense joy to have Mary Immaculate as our Mother! Every time we experience our frailty and the promptings of evil, we may turn to her and our hearts receive light and comfort. Even in the trials of life, in the storms that cause faith and hope to vacillate, let us recall that we are her children and that our existence is deeply rooted in the infinite grace of God. Although the Church is exposed to the negative influences of the world, she always finds in Mary the star to guide her so that she may follow the route pointed out to her by Christ.” – Angelus, December 8, 2009

“Consequently, every time we approach the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharistic liturgy, we also turn to her who, by her complete fidelity, received Christ’s sacrifice for the whole Church. The Synod Fathers rightly declared that “Mary inaugurates the Church’s participation in the sacrifice of the Redeemer.” She is the Immaculata, who receives God’s gift unconditionally and is thus associated with his work of salvation. Mary of Nazareth, icon of the nascent Church, is the model for each of us, called to receive the gift that Jesus makes of himself in the Eucharist.” – Sacramentum Caritatis #33

“It is from Mary that the Church always learns the intimacy of Christ. Mary, who carried the small child of Bethlehem in her arms, teaches us to recognize the infinite humility of God. She who received the broken body of Jesus from the Cross shows the Church how to receive all those in this world whose lives have been wounded by violence and sin. From Mary, the Church learns the meaning of the power of love, as revealed by God in the life of his beloved Son: “he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their heart... he has lifted up the lowly” (Lk 1:51-52)… In entrusting his mother to the Apostle John, Jesus on the Cross invites his Church to learn from Mary the secret of the love that is victorious”. - Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church May 31, 2004

EXCERPTS FROM POPE BENEDICT XVI'S SPIRITUAL THOUGHTS SERIES: “CHRISTMAS”

These quotes and reflections from the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, are excerpted from "Christmas: Pope Benedict XVI Spiritual Thoughts Series." "Presence" Advent, this powerful liturgical season that we are beginning, invites us to pause in silence to understand a presence. It is an invitation to understand that the individual events of the day are hints that God is giving us, signs of the attention he has for each one of us. ---Homily at First Vespers of Advent, November 28, 2009 "Waiting" The question is: Is the humanity of our time still waiting for a Savior? One has the feeling that many consider God as foreign to their own interests. Apparently, they do not need him. They live as though he did not exist and, worse still, as though he were an “obstacle” to remove in order to fulfill themselves. Even among believers—we are sure of it—some let themselves be attracted by enticing dreams and distracted by misleading doctrines that suggest deceptive shortcuts to happiness. Yet, despite its contradictions, worries and tragedies, and perhaps precisely because of them, humanity today seeks a path of renewal, of salvation, it seeks a Savior and awaits, sometimes unconsciously, the coming of the Savior who renews the world and our life, the coming of Christ, the one true Redeemer of man and of the whole of man. ---Pope Benedict XVI, General Audience December 20, 2006 "Preparation" Christmas is a privileged opportunity to meditate on the meaning and value of our existence. The approach of this So-lemnity helps us on the one hand to reflect on the drama of history in which people, injured by sin, are perennially in search of happiness and of a fulfilling sense of life and death; and on the other, it urges us to meditate on the merciful kindness of God who came to man to communicate to him directly the Truth that saves, and to enable him to partake in his friendship and his life. Therefore let us prepare ourselves for Christmas with humility and simplicity, making our-selves ready to receive as a gift the light, joy and peace that shine from this mystery. ---General Audience, December 17, 2008 "Sign" God’s sign is his humility. God’s sign is that he makes himself small; he becomes a child; he lets us touch him and he asks for our love. How we would prefer a different sign, an imposing, irresistible sign of God’s power and greatness! But his sign summons us to faith and love, and thus it gives us hope: this is what God is like. He has power, he is Goodness itself. He invites us to become like him. Yes indeed, we become like God if we allow ourselves to be shaped by this sign; if we ourselves learn humility and hence true greatness; if we renounce violence and use only the weap-ons of truth and love. ---Homily at Mass for the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord, December 24, 2009 "Changing" Only if people change will the world change; and in order to change, people need the light that comes from God, the light which so unexpectedly [on the night of Christmas] entered into our night.---Homily at Mass for the Solemnity,of the Nativity of the Lord, December 25, 2008
