SPIKE AWARDIn building a strong association, Spikes are priceless. A Spike is a member who works to recruit new members, gets members involved and retains members. Here’s how to start: You must earn six credits within two consecutive membership years. You receive one Spike credit for each new member you recruit, and an additional half credit when that new member renews on or before their anniversary date. You must earn two credits per year until you reach 25 credits to become a Life Spike. Each year, BATC recognizes the member who has recruited the most new members as our Spike of the Year.

LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD BATC’s Legislator of the Year Award is given to members of the Minnesota Legislature who have championed the advancement of our policy agenda and legislative priorities. These legislators work closely with BATC to introduce or support legislation or amendments that advance our legislative goals. The award is given only when a deserving Legislator is identified, and there can be more than one recipient in any given year.

ADVOCATE OF THE YEARThis award recognizes members who have made major contributions in support of BATC’s advocacy mission and platform, complimenting BATC’s mission to “Helping our members build their businesses – through marketing, advocacy and industry connections.” Recognition of an individual may be based on his or her contributions in a given year for outstanding service in promoting BATC’s legislative platform or for outstanding service over several years. The award is given only when a deserving member is identified, and there can be more than one recipient in any given year.

ROBERT L. HANSON INDUSTRY SERVICE AWARDWe thank all of our members who are involved in the industry. But there are more than a few of you who go above and beyond, offering your time, energy, and talents to serve here at BATC, at our state and national associations, and in the industry as a whole. That dedication and service is what the Robert L. Hanson Industry Service Award recognizes.

REGGIE AWARDSSM

For more than 40 years, local Builders have coveted the Reggie Award more than any other. Winners are selected by judging teams of Builders and Associates who visit homes within their category and meet together to select the best example of excellence in design, construction quality and value.

ROMA AWARDSThe Remodeler of Merit Awards (ROMA) honor our remodeler members for quality and value in remodeling projects that range from baths, kitchens and additions to whole-house remodels. Professional remodelers judge their peers on creativity in meeting the unique challenges of remodeling, and in successfully meeting the needs, desires, and budgets of their clients.

TRILLIUM AWARDSSM

The Trillium Awards were established to honor our Associates for their partnership with Builders and Remodelers. As Reggie-winning homes and ROMA-winning projects are judged the very best, the Trillium Awards are given to all entered participating Associates in a ROMA-winning project or a Reggie-winning home.

OUR MISSIONTo work in partnership with others to provide safe, affordable housing for those in need.

OUR GOALTo make a difference for people and communities in need. We join with social service organizations and BATC members to repair or replace existing housing.

Formed in 1995, the BATC Foundation is the charitable arm of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities. Through donations and volunteer efforts, we are able to lower costs, making projects affordable. The experience and talents of our BATC members are our greatest assets.

OUR NEXT PROJECTSThe BATC Foundation is excited to start several new projects in the coming months.

Karen was a surgical nurse when she underwent routine back surgery. During surgery she experienced a significant brain injury that left her extremely sensitive to light. A few years ago she started to remodel her basement because she felt she could better control the light levels there. Unfortunately, an unscrupulous remodeler took her money but left the project largely uncompleted. The BATC Foundation is thrilled to provide the means to finish Karen’s basement, giving her a more comfortable home.

Marco Solt was on his first tour of duty in Afghanistan when his vehicle hit a roadside explosive device. Marco’s injuries were severe, including the loss of both legs. The BATC

Foundation is pleased to partner with Homes for Our Troops to provide Marco and his family with a specially adapted home. Construction will begin next spring in Ramsey, MN with Build Partner Accent Homes, Inc (read more about Marco on the following page).

Bluebird House is home to four exceptional young men. Each has significant medical needs and requires 24 hour nursing care. Homeward Bound, the organization that operates Bluebird House and several other group homes, needs to remodel and expand the current structure. The new addition will allow all four men and their medical equipment to be together in the same room. Having worked with the Foundation in the past, Homeward Bound approached us to see if we would be interested in partnering again. Construction on this project will start in 2015.

On November 13, support your industry charity – the BATC Foundation! Give securely on your phone or computer.

Page 41: The BIG Night Program

On May 1, 2012, Army SPC Marco Solt was on his first deployment in Qara Bah, Afghanistan when the vehicle his unit was riding in was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED). The blast resulted in the loss of both of his legs below the knee.

After SPC Solt’s platoon leader pulled him out of the vehicle, he was medically evacuated to Bagram, Afghanistan and then to Landstuhl, Germany. Eventually he was brought stateside to Walter Reed Medical Center (Bethesda) where he underwent months of extensive therapies and rehabilitation.

Marco credits his wife Eugenia for the progress he made in his rehabilitation. Early on during his recovery, Marco was frustrated by the amount of medication he was required to take in order to be pain free; he also found it difficult to be dependent on hospital staff for his every day needs. But, says Marco, “My wife wouldn’t let me mope.”As the two look to the day they’ll move into their specially adapted home, they envision a barrier-free living space where Marco’s wheelchair can move freely from room to room, especially the bathroom. A roll-in shower will ensure that Marco can maintain his

independence. Every inch of the new home will be fully accessible, enabling Marco to help Eugenia around the home with chores and caring for their busy toddler Devin. Marco looks forward to maneuvering in a kitchen equipped with lowered countertops and pull-down cabinets, features that will remove the hazardous risks of “climbing” counters when Marco needs to reach something up high.

Both Marco and Eugenia are grateful for this life-changing gift, one they know will help their family rebuild their lives. A mortgage-free home will help Marco assimilate into civilian life, and ease the burden of worrying about caring for his family. The home will also allow Marco to focus on his education and career goals, which include going to school for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and working fulltime in the industry.

The BATC Foundation is pleased to partner with Homes for Our Troops, a Massachusetts based program that specializes in providing specially adapted homes for our nation’s most severely wounded Veterans. You will have the opportunity to give a cash gift to help support this very special project during tonight’s program.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

The BATC Foundation is a tax-exempt 501c3 nonprofit organization. Your gift of cash or materials is tax deductible

as allowed by law.

Parade of HomesSM and Remodelers Showcase®

Our signature events remain a primary focus for BATC. This year we continued to work on our web site administration, improving your entry process and building an online proofing system. With your feedback, we plan on even more improvements over the coming months. Best of all, with online entries and proofing, we’ve been able to extend our entry deadline by over two weeks (December 3, 2014 for Spring tours).

This year we also embarked upon a partnership with KARE 11 TV to rebuild their iconic Backyard (seeing nearly 2,000 visitors to the Backyard during our Fall Parade of Homes). Pairing BATC and the Parade of Homes with KARE 11, one of the most respected brands in the Twin Cities, is enhancing our image, while helping us gather hundreds of names with which we’ll be communicating in the future. More than one out of three Twin Citians watches KARE, so it’s exciting that we’re continuing our relationship in 2015, and working on a number of new promotional opportunities.

Artisan Home Tour by Parade of HomesSM In its first year, this high-end, ticketed home tour was a rousing success. With over 16,000 visits, each of the 24 incredible homes averaged 700 visitors during the nine-day event. We gained a lot of insight (especially from our online ticketing app, Parade Craze) that will help us make next year’s tour even better, as well as providing intel for future consumer events. We’re especially proud that through ticket revenue from this event, we contributed $16,000 toward our Foundation. If you haven’t seen our Look Book (polybagged with the October issue of Artful Living Magazine), check out the E-book at ArtisanHomeTour.org.

BATC 2014 ACHIEVEMENTS

BATC volunteers and staff have been working hard this year to fulfill BATC’s mission to help you build your businesses through Marketing, Advocacy and

Industry Connections. Here are just some of the highlights:

MARKETING

MN Green Path Our energy label and green build program continues to grow with well over 1,000 homes receiving Green Path Home Performance Reports (HPR).

Nearly 50 percent of our Fall Parade Homes participated in the Green Path Energy Tour, showing off their HPR to their visitors. And as the newly adopted energy code requires blower door testing, increased labeling, and a tight threshold for hourly air exchanges, Green Path is your easy solution to help meet this requirement while gaining a marketing advantage.

VOTE!With elections less than two weeks away, please make sure to vote, and to vote for housing champions. BATC’s public policy and Housing First committees have been working overtime to find, vet, and support candidates that can make a difference. In a first, BATC endorsed 22 candidates for office. In addition, we raised nearly $700,000 to help us influence key races, which will raise our status as a real player in Minnesota politics and help us build a stable of housing champions. Please visit MNHousingChamps.org to see our BATC endorsements, and HousingFirstMN.org for more details about our Independent Expenditure Fund.

Minnesota Housing Coalition Launched late last year, BATC has been leading a coalition of like-minded associations (BATC, the Minnesota Association of Realtors, BAM, Minnesota Bankers Association, Minnesota Multi-Housing Association, and Minnesota Land Title Association) to work together to create the Minnesota Housing Caucus of legislators that we support and who give us access to present our issues.

Codes and the Sprinkler MandateAs you know, the new Minnesota building and energy codes have been released and are going to drive changes in building practices. We worked incredibly hard to ameliorate the worst of any new requirements, and succeeded in many cases. Our biggest disappointment was failing to block the sprinkler mandate due to the complete intransigence of Governor Dayton to acknowledge the wishes of the majority of Minnesotans (polls put support for sprinklers at barely 10 percent of the population), bi-partisan legislation (twice vetoing bills), and the code advisory committee (which twice voted against the sprinkler mandate).

Code Classes and BATC UniversityWith new codes comes new courses as we strive to meet our mission of helping our members build their businesses. BATC University has geared up and is offering classes to help you meet the new code requirements as well as the coursework you need to renew your lead certification (or get certified) to meet the OSHA regulations. And that’s in addition to our traditional array of highly-touted BATC University continuing education courses planned for January through March. Find information at BATCUniversity.org.

ADVOCACY

Builder Day at the CapitolEducating and lobbying our state legislators is a big job, and one of the most effective strategies is our annual Builder Day. In March, almost 200 of you and our greater-Minnesota compatriots met at the James J. Hill Library before heading to the Capitol to meet with senators and representatives. These face-to-face meetings ensure that our legislators see the real-world impacts of the work they do. Please plan to join us for our next Builder Day on February 18. Our goal is to make this event even bigger in 2015. Let’s show our legislators the real power behind an industry that accounts for 15 percent of our state’s GDP.

Builders and Remodelers Show (BRS)Moved back to April, this year’s show at the Minneapolis Convention Center was abuzz with activity. BRS is one of the largest builder shows in the NAHB federation, and this year was no exception. Exhibitors loved the new bar-coded lead system, and are already excited about next year's new online booth booking system with its interactive floor plan (hint: several booths have already been booked for 2015). Make sure you visit BATCBRS.com to exhibit and to check out what’s happening at the show (including our new product section).

INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS

BEMember CommunicationsAs the leading voice for builders and remodelers, we have been very successful reaching out to consumers through our Parade of Homes brand, and now we’ve taken steps to enhance our outreach to our industry and the press. The first step is the addition of Katie Eldred, our new Press Secretary. A former TV reporter, Katie will add to the voice of BATC, both to the media and to our industry. From the new BATC Blog, to the weekly BATC Voice, to our quarterly BATC Digest (yes, we’re renaming the Builders Digest), to our BATC social media, we’re constantly striving to reach every member (and those not yet members) in the manner he or she most wants. Stay tuned as we roll out new and better options for staying in touch.

BATC EventsFrom our January meeting with Economist Elliot Eisenberg, to our sold out Golf and Clay Shoot, to several BATC BE (Business Exchange) events, members have had great opportunities to network and connect throughout the year. We’re planning even stronger networking events in 2015. Check out the calendar on page 35.
