For its last stop of 2010 the West Coast Women’s Regional 9 Ball Tour (WCWRT) returned to familiar surroundings—Family Billiards on Geary St. in San Francisco. Family is a mainstay of the Bay Area pool scene and owner Delbert Wong has always been a strong supporter of women’s pool, hosting many women’s events over the years. We want to thank him and his staff for giving us such a warm welcome again this year. Our 28 players got right down to work Saturday on Family’s Brunswick Gold Crowns that feature tight, challenging pockets. By the end of the day, four players—Kim Benson, Emilyn (Em) Callado, Eleanor (El) Callado and Revelina (Rev) Um—remained unbeaten. Helen Gaughran, Christy Hawley, Tracy Palma and Bonnie Plowman had each lost just once. Sunday morning, on the winners’ side, Eleanor Callado defeated Kim Benson while Revelina Um played El’s twin sister Em in a match that went hill-hill. Rev took the case game and advanced to the hot seat match against Eleanor. Another hill-hill battle ended with El taking the match. After her loss to Revelina Um, Emilyn Callado proceeded to play Tracy Palma, who’d defeated Christy Hawley (7-4) in her first match. Christy ended in 7th/8th , her second top 8 finish in a row. Tracy had earned the admiration of the entire tour this year by starting out very pregnant, missing a single stop to deliver her second beautiful daughter, Zoey Palma-Hwang, then picking up her pool game right where she left off. A (4-7) loss to Emilyn left Tracy in 5th/6th, her best finish of the year and matching her best of 2009. Emilyn, meanwhile, had finished 5th /6th (her best finish) at both the San Jose and Modesto tournaments. At this stop she seemed to be on a mission to break through her personal glass ceiling. Em’s next opponent was Helen Gaughran. Helen had been playing well all weekend and was coming off back-to-back wins over Kim Benson and Bonnie Plowman. Em got off to a fast start, winning the first two games, but Helen came back taking 4 straight to put Emilyn’s tournament run in jeopardy. Em later said that she told herself if Helen could run off 4 straight so could she. In fact, she ran off 5 to win 7-4. The last match on the one-loss side was a rematch between Emilyn and Revelina Um. Since it was her third consecutive match of the day against one of the twins, Rev may have felt like she was trapped in a pool version of Ground Hog Day. An extremely competitive player, she had been knocking hard on the door to the finals--finishing 3rd at the previous two events. Once again, Revelina and Emilyn fought to hill-hill, but this time it was Emilyn taking the case game, setting up the first ever all-Callado WCWRT final. In the finals, Em came on strong winning the first match 7-6 to give each sister one loss in the tournament. But in the second and deciding match, Eleanor beat back her sibling challenger and won 7-4. While the 8 finalists in the Main Event battled it out, 15 other players returned to play in the Second Chance Tournament. Heather Pulford won that event and $80, A Aiem-Sa-Ard placed second winning $60, Linda Carter and Jessica Skye placed 3rd/4th receiving $30. Since Family Billiards was the fifth and final stop of the Tour, the 21 players who played in four or more tournaments received their share of the end-of-season points prize

fund. A portion of each sponsor’s contribution goes into this fund and any money collected through fees, etc. not needed by the Tour for current or next year expenses is added in at the end of the season. All players who played 4 or more times receive a portion of this money. The prize fund this year was $2,000. Due to her first place finish, Eleanor Callado, will remain a WPBA exempt player in 2011, regardless of her results in the WPBA’s Niagra Falls tournament in December.The situation at the Family finals was unique, but the drama wasn’t. Every one of the WCWRT tournaments this year has been exciting, with lots of hill-hill matches and well played pool. The organizers of the Tour feel that this year, the Tour’s second, was extremely successful. Among our accomplishments was running tournaments in cities—Modesto and San Jose—that had never hosted women’s regional pool before. Most important, everyone is still having fun. The most

frequent comment we heard at Family was “I can’t believe the Tour is over already. When does it start again?” Next year we plan to continue to grow. We are considering expanding to six stops in 2011. We also hope to draw in more league players. League players are often hesitant to play, feeling that their skills are not up to the caliber needed. In fact, many WCWRT players are primarily league players without much tournament experience outside of WCWRT. Most of our players aren’t trying to graduate to the professional ranks, they simply love to play pool and to compete with other women. On November 6, 35 ladies representing three US states and two Canadian provinces came out to compete in the final tour stop of the 2010 season hosted by The Parlor Billiards and Spirits in Bellevue, WA. The NWPA would like to thank our sponsors, BDA, Sanmar and Ozone Billiards. Because of their great support and the support of the Parlor a grand total of $1750 was added to this event. Even the second chance tournament saw some added monies. The weekend was filled with great action and only twelve ladies remained in the main event on Sunday. In the winner’s bracket Liz Cole defeated Cindy Sliva 7-4 and Suzanne Smith defeated Jackie Karol 7-6 to advance to the point match where Liz took it up a notch and handily defeated Suzanne 7-2 to earn her spot in her third (second consecutive) final of the 2010 season. On the one loss side, Regene Wentzell defeated Shari Ross 6-3, Deby Welfringer defeated Janie Reckard 6-3, Jana Montour defeated Denice White 6-5, and Mikki Small defeated Shelby Locati 6-4. Morning victories by Regene and Jana gave them momentum to carry them through the second round, where they defeated Deby W. and Mikki S. 6-3 and 6-4, respectively and the third where they defeated Cindy S. and Jackie K. 6-4 and 6-5. However, one run ended as they squared off against each other and Jana defeated Regene. Congratulations Regene on your best finish this year. In the battle for third place, Jana seemed to be well on her way to her fifth final of the year, up 4-0 against Suzanne. After a well-timed break, Suzanne started her come back with a break and run and then a table run, only to end up tying things at four games a piece. A critical miss on the seven ball in rack 9 and a table run in rack 10 gave Jana the 6-4 score needed to advance to the final. The FINAL: Liz Cole vs. Jana Montour, One Race to 9, Alternating Break It seems only fitting looking back on the 2010 NWPA season that the final battle would be between standings

leader, Jana Montour, and Liz Cole (2008 and 2009 Tour Champion). Coming into the final event Jana had won 3 out of the previous stops and Liz 2. There was no way that Liz could catch Jana in points; however, that wouldn’t stop her from taking the year end title, along with the additional prize money…

With some critical mistakes made by Liz late in the early racks, Jana jumped out to a 4-1 lead. After taking a break, Liz came back and won the next couple of racks to bring the match within one game. Jana and Liz exchanged racks for the next couple games, and Liz ended up tying up the match at 5 games a piece. They exchanged games to 6-6 and a couple of early 9 balls put Liz on the hill at 8-6. A missed 5 ball let Jana get within one at 8-7, but it was not in the cards for Jana as in rack 16, she opted for a 5-9 carom, which she missed, allowing Liz back to the table with an open run. Liz ran out the rack to win her 3rd stop of the season. Congratulation ladies, you both had a great season! Liz’s path: Kathy S. (6), Carol M. (2),

2010 Montana State 8 Ball TournamentBILLINGS, MTThis year we had a great tournament with new champions, repeat champions, record number of teams and a record number of singles entries. We had players from all parts

of the state including representatives from over 23 Montana cities and towns. Thanks to all who played in this very competitive tournament, we appreciate all the class and great sportsmanship all players added to our tenth State Tournament. Special thanks to Bullwackers for hosting and supporting our event for the tenth year. We had 3 new men’s champs and a repeat champion for the ladies division. In the team events the open division crowned a new state champion and the mixed

event was the closest ever with a 3 way tie for first and the defending champions coming through to repeat. Friday we played a one day team event and the team from Bozeman(Nate Neergaard, captain) took home the title going undefeated in the tournament. They defeated a team from several communities(Jim Winter, captain) in the title match. Last years mixed team(captained by Barb Walker) won a squeaker over a team from Great Falls, (Stephanie Barnes, captain). Wade Thompson, Great Falls, played really well to claim his first state championship in the A Division. He had to as the competition was excellent. He had do defeat Jim Winter, Billings, twice in

the championship and both matches were 4-3. Jim played really well also, the only player in the tournament he lost to was Wade. Chase Guthrie(Missoula) finished third. Dave Willis, Miles City, won the B division tournament going undefeated all week end. He defeated Gary Kenney, Butte, in the championship. Both are strong players and worked there way through a tough field to reach the c h a m p i o n s h i p match. Shane Mickelson, Billings, had his very best tournament finishing third.

Dan Bummer, Laurel, won his first state title finishing at the top of the Seniors division. The Seniors played a round robin and had a “great” day. Lyle Cusson, Butte, was the runner-up and Randy Howard, Billings finished third. This division continues to grow and will be held again next year. The ladies championship matched two three time state champions as Linda Asleson, Billings, went undefeated in the tournament beating Sky Tigart, Great Falls, in the final match. Linda claimed

her record 4th title. Stephanie Barnes, Great Falls had her best State finishing in third place. Thanks to all the volunteers for making this a success. Next years tournament will begin the first Friday in November.

In Memory of Mike DalagerDear Northwest pool players, I regret to inform you that our longtime and very dear friend Mike Dalager has passed. Some of you will know him as a skilled competitor and organizer of our annual Memorial tournament here in Kalispell. He was also a loving husband and father, a respected member of the community, self employed business owner and best friend. He loved his country, stood up for what he believed, hunted and fished and made a difference in this world. What more could be said. He willbe missed. - Don Lundy

Mark Hadad returned from a loss in the hot seat match to meet and defeat Tony Piazza twice in the finals of the Lucasi Hybrid 10-Ball Tour stop on Saturday, November 20. The $1,000-added event drew 23 entrants to Greenfield’s in Lakewood, CO. From among the winners’ side final four, Haddad got into the hot seat match with a 9-5 victory over Shane Wertz. Piazza. joined him, following an identical 9-5 victory over Neal Morrison. Piazza dominated the hot seat match, winning 9-2 and waited for Haddad’s return. On the one-loss side, Bill Skinner and Ruben Silva were waiting for Morrison and Wertz, respectively. Skinner and Silva had chalked up four identical 7-3 victories over their previous two opponents to reach Morrison and Wertz; Skinner defeating Jim Caldoron and Frank Urbaneck, Silva defeating Rich Montoya and Bobby Begey. Two more 7-3 victories advanced Morrison and Wertz to the quarterfinals; Morrison over Skinner and Wertz over Silva. The streak of 7-3 matches ended right there, as Wertz shutout Morrison and advanced to the semifinals against Haddad. Haddad got his second chance against Piazza with a 7-5 win over Wertz. In the true double elimination finals, racing to 9, Haddad took the opening set 9-6 and stepped it up to take the second set 9-3 and capture the event title.

In remembrance of our friend and tournament director Mike Carey, and to benefit Mikes surviving son Cameron Carey, please join us for our 3rd annual Mike Carey Benefit Tournament held on Saturday, December 11th 2010. This is a BCA rules double elimination 8-ball tournament, race to 5 for master players and race to 4 for open players. The charge for this tournament will be a $15 entry fee plus a $5 green fee. The house will add money for each player. Guaranteed $250 adds for 32 players or $500 adds for 64 players. 100% of the money will be paid back to the players, with approximately 25% of the field being paid. Play starts at 11 am; tables will open for practice at 10 am. 10% of all tournament sales will be donated to the Cameron Carey foundation. We also have a benefit raffle going on this day as well. We are going to raffle 2 griffin cues. Tickets for those are $1 a piece or 12 tickets for $10. Each ticket sold for the griffin cues have 2 chances to win! Chase Guthrie coasted to a tournament championship by handily beating out a field of experienced shooters, many of whom were at least twice his age, as open 9-Ball action returned to Spokane, Wash. on Nov. 20 and 21 What was supposed to be a one day tournament turned out to last two days due to better than expected turn out. Though event organizers Brian and Alicia Kvasnicka planned for a 64-player bracket, the turnout of 52 entries exceeded their expectations, as well as everyone else’s. An unexpected overnight stay did not hinder Guthrie, 23, of Missuola, Mont. who only had one match go hill-hill early in the tournament and was not seriously challenged again until a quarterfinal match ended closely when he beat Scott Chandler of Everett, Wash. 7-5. In the loser’s bracket, Chandler met Joe Gilliland of Spokane, Wash. in a rematch that would decide third place. Chandler won the earlier match that sent Gilliland to the loser’s bracket. In the rematch, Gilliland rallied back from a two-game deficit to tie it up at 3-3, only to get a visit from the scratch bug. Three times in one game Gilliland gave up a ball-in-hand. Chandler took advantage and won the rematch 5-3, giving him another shot at Guthrie. Then Chandler’s game cooled off. In the championship match, several missed shots plagued his rematch against Guthrie. Chandler tried to play through it and despite well-played safeties, a pair of successful jump shots and a easy 9-Ball it was not enough for him to keep up with the smooth-shooting Guthrie, who rolled on to a 6-1 win to take the tournament just in time to get back on the road as a snow storm arrived in Spokane.

The tournament ends a two-and-a-half-year hiatus in Spokane. Last July, Steve and Kenna Legault bought the floundering McQ’s Billiards and Sports Bar and after a renovation it emerged as Black Diamond Billiards & Eatery. The next event at Black Diamond is an open 8-Ball tournament scheduled for Dec. 18 and 19. Entry fee is $25. For questions call (509) 891-8357. In the Nov. 20 tourney, the race was to seven on the winner’s side and to five on the loser’s bracket. It was played by Texas Express rules on 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown tables with Red-Circle cue balls. Entry fee was $25 with no greens fees, but no extra money added. Question: “What are some differences between playing on a "bar-box" and a 9 ft. (regulation) table? And which do you prefer?”

Answer: There are numerous sizes/shapes to pool tables. Here is a list of table sizes • 3.5 ft by 7 ft tables (bar-tables are usually in

taverns and some poolrooms) • 4 ft by 8 ft tables (“home table” generally what

you might put in your home) • 4.5 ft by 9 ft table (a regulation size table, which is what the WPBA uses

and most professional players are used to) • 5 ft x 10 ft table (associated with snooker & 3-cushion tables) • 6 ft x 12 ft table (an old English snooker table)

What do I prefer? I prefer playing pool on a regulation size table but that is what I am used to playing on. I grew up in Boulder, Colorado and there was a poolroom close to where I worked that only had 9-foot tables. It was not until I stepped out of that particular room and ventured into local bars where they supplied bar-boxes. Earlier this year, I traveled to Reno, NV to play in the US Bar Table Championships. Since I was not used to playing on bar boxes I had to spend a few extra days practicing beforehand. At the beginning of practice I thought how easy these little tables are. But in reality I realized it was harder then I originally thought because of the size differences plus I felt like the balls were congested. At the beginning of the tournament I had to actually get a few pointers from Shane & Oscar on strategies. Surprisingly, I won both the 8-ball & 9-ball events. I suggest playing on all sizes of tables, because in the long run you will become more of a “solid player”

Lucky Part IV: Lucky and the Doc Recap: In Part III I was a guest at Lucky’s ranch, listening to stories of his life and politics and anticipating action in town the next day. I woke up the next morning to a crowing rooster instead of an alarm clock. I could see blue sky through the window and immediately jumped out of bed, feeling extraordinarily refreshed. After a quick shower, I followed the bacon and coffee aromas and found Lucky downstairs, drinking a brew and reading the local paper. “Good Morning! Sleep ok? Bacon and eggs over on the stove. Check out this story here!”

I replied, “Mornin’. Yes, thanks. Where’s the coffee?” And noticed the local newspaper headline was news I had already read back home three days before In the truck on the way into town, we talked about the upcoming day. “Everyone will play hard,” he said. “I just have to make it look tough." It was remarkable, the confidence Lucky had. Some of these guys were famous money players. But, I saw Lucky play last year and he did not miss a ball. No one I've seen has ever played like that. “I'll win some money today and everything will be ok.” My ears perked up. “What do you mean everything will be ok? Does it have to do with the stuff you wrote in your letters? “Oh, I’ve been ailing a little this last year. Finally went to the Doc and he keeps me under lock and key! Lucky chuckled. “Gets kinda expensive! Don’t have “medical insurance” and I’m eating my savings up.” He wished a push for universal health care were more assertive. Insurance companies and medical costs are the real culprits. I was speechless. What could be so serious that it would cost Lucky all his savings? My heart was sad for him as I listened. But, as before, Lucky stopped talking about it when we hit town, and I didn’t make an issue of it. It was better not to get into a big discussion like that before a match. I couldn’t think of anything to say to get both our spirits up. Then, out of the blue, Lucky asked me, “Do you know this old salt, John Antons?” I said, “Sure do. He’s a friend back home.” Come to find out, they knew each other and Lucky had even been sailing with Antons. I told him John used to play pool with my father! We talked, too, about another old friend of his, Eddie Parker, an old time pool hustler who, at this recounting, has passed on to play with the pool gods in the sky. Lucky and Fast Eddie matched up in the early 50’s and went on the road for a while until they had an argument about, guess…money. We sneaked in the back of the hotel and walked out the front. People were waiting around. It reminded me of the movie High Noon. One cocky guy stepped in front of Lucky and said, “You’re going to lose today.” Lucky just brushed past him, saying to me, “Ronnie Allen said the same thing thirty years ago. He left busted. True champions say nothing. They don't talk -- they just play. That was false confidence. Trying to verbally intimidate the other player shows weakness. I learned that from Caras.” We walked in and immediately the crowd opened up a path to the pool table. Two city slickers were playing a race to something for a thousand. We waited and watched. The crowd kept sidling by Lucky and peering at him. They looked like a wolf pack on their prey. It didn't seem to bother him at all. He just watched as if the two guys playing were the marquee match. I noticed the crowd had thinned out from yesterday. Probably losers, leaving town while they still had gas in the tank. A gangly kid standing next to me kept cracking his fingers. I asked him how the ring game went yesterday. He sniffed and said, “Aw, it wasn’t nothin’. Pretty even. Two of ‘em argued over every dollar and finally got throwed out.” The match ended. It was apparent they weren’t going to play anymore. Maybe they would have continued if Lucky had not shown up. Lucky knew what time it was and just cut to the chase. He spoke clearly and to no one in particular, “Who's first?” and moved over to a counter near the table and took out his cue. He stood there rubbing Cue Glide on his shaft, ignoring the crowd, who were kind of looking around at each other, waiting to see who would come out first. “Humpf,” said Lucky. Then the young player I’d talked with earlier jumped up and said, “Ok, let’s play some. “ “How much?” Lucky murmered. “Two thousand to nine,” from the kid. The side bets started, so I got in, putting five bills on the set and a bill a game with one guy. I also took a few smaller bets on the set. I figured I’d make fifteen hundred on the match. Pocket change for some…a lot for me. The kid played pretty good, but Lucky won 9 to 4, and the kid sniffled his way out the door. I collected my grand from one guy and the other five from the rest. One of two men who were hanging together approached and placed two grand on the table. “Bet?” said someone. “Sure,” said I. Lucky made it look tough, won 9-7. The player conferred with his stakehorse. Another two grand on the table. “Bet again?” the stranger said to me. “This time I want two games on the wire for a thousand, nothing on the games.” “Ok” I said. The games went back and forth. The score was 8 to 6, Lucky. I hadn’t told Lucky I was side betting. He broke, made nothing. His opponent was running out. I would be back to square one if this guy got to 7. Somehow he left himself with a bank on the nine and missed it, to my relief. Then Lucky missed and left a small angled cut shot, and I thought, that’s it. The player eagerly shot it but over cut it. He left another bank shot for Lucky. Lucky shot. It looked like it was going in but it settled on the end rail just next to the pocket. He’s planning to lose, I realized! I was reaching into my pocket to get out the money. Thok! What the? The guy miscued, but the cue ball rolled right up to the nine ball, pushed it to the rail, but failed to drop it. Oh brother. Lucky shrugged his shoulders slightly and pocketed the ball. How lucky was I. The stakehorse was shaking his head, but came up with the money for another set. I tried to signal Lucky and let him know I was betting on him, but I couldn’t get his attention.

If you find yourself in a spot like the diagram where you have to kick three cushions at the one ball, you might be tempted to apply the “corner-5” system. You would decide on a third-cushion contact point, estimate the cue ball’s origin, do some arithmetic to one or two decimal places and then shoot to the calculated spot on the first cushion. It’s amusing to watch a diamond system player who is not so good at math as they miss the target by exactly one

diamond -- oops, forgot to borrow during the subtraction. A much simpler system is Ray Kilgore’s “opposite 3” system, which is described in detail in Robert Byrne’s book “Wonderful World of Pool and Billiards.” Kilgore was a champion 3-cushion player, and the system is most useful on a carom table, but with the modifications below, it is useful and easy on a pool table. The basic idea is that if you are shooting from one side of the table and want to return to the same spot on the other side of the table after three cushions, all you have to do is shoot to a magic spot on the table. In the diagram, you are shooting from a spot 2 diamonds from the corner pocket on the long rail, and you want to go to the spot directly across the table, also two diamonds from the corner pocket. I’ve marked a spot X which is close to the magic spot for most pool tables. If you just shoot over the X, the cue ball will hit the one ball. If you are shooting from the corner pocket at A, and you shoot over X, the cue ball will go to AA. Same thing for B-BB. The main problem is that the spot is in a slightly different place on each table. This is solved by taking a few shots such as the shots shown to discover where the spot is for your conditions. Start by shooting from the corner pocket to get to the other corner pocket. Remember to use medium speed -- enough to move the object ball to somewhere useful -- and running English, which would be left side in the diagram. Also, use follow for best consistency.Mark the rail once you have found the direction for a pocket-to-pocket shot. Then try the shot shown in the diagram, marking the rail again. Finally, try the shot from and to the end cushion, BBB. If you look at the three paths, they should all converge at a single point, or close to it. That’s the magic spot on your table. Any shot you try between the calibration shots should be right on, and even shots from slightly outside that range should be close. Where I play, the spot is close to where I’ve drawn the X in the diagram. The large disadvantage of this system is that if you have to go to somewhere other than directly across the table from where you start, the system doesn’t work. For example, if you have to hit the 9 ball instead of the 1 ball, shooting to the X would land in the wrong place. You can roughly fix the shot by splitting the difference: since you want to land a diamond farther down the cushion to hit the 9, aim half a diamond farther up the cushion. Practice to get a feel for the adjustment. This system is easy to master and because you will calibrate it for your stroke and your table, it can be very accurate. It’s called “Opposite 3” because on a carom table the magic spot is right by Diamond 3 on the long cushion. For more details, see Byrne’s book.

No, seriously. Get yourself out of town and play some pool. Once you start playing seriously, one of the best things you can do for your competitive game is to get out of town. Travel to a tournament in another town, even another state, and compete. It’s easy to become so comfortable in your own zip code that when you do finally have to leave town for an event, the foreign pressure becomes so overwhelming that you can’t perform. You may even find that you play better because there are no expectations from others. There are no friends or family to distract you or to break your concentration during the event. You also force yourself to play under different conditions. You test your skills and concentration. Attending out of state pool tournaments is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people with similar interests and experiences. Developing new friendships only helps our great sport grow.

Top Ten Reasons to Leave Town for a Tournament 1. Learning to play on different equipment and in a different environment. It’s easy to get so comfortable in your element that when you’re finally forced to step outside the box, you can’t perform. When you only leave town once a year for Vegas nationals, you may find you put so much pressure on that one event instead of realizing it’s just one of many. 2. Winning when you know you’re not the favorite. There’s nothing more rewarding than coming out ahead in a match when the crowd is all pulling for your opponent. It takes a lot of mental strength to fight through the feeling that everyone is rooting against you. 3. Competing against different players. You already know what to expect from the top players in your own town. You’d be surprised what you can learn when playing against and watching new players. 4. Benchmark your game. What better way to gauge your level of play than by testing your skills against new and unbiased competition? It’s difficult to truly measure your true progress when you are facing the same players in every event. 5. Return home a better player. Each time you prepare for a big event and play your heart out while you’re there, you always return home stronger and more confident than before you left. Learning to compete under a higher level of pressure always brings out the best player. 6. Change the monotony and break the glass ceiling. When you’re constantly playing against the same players over and over again, you begin to have expectations. After a while, you know who you’re going to beat and who you’re going to lose to. The get stuck at a level where you feel expected to be at. 7. Big fish in a little pond? If you’re the best in your town, playing against great players from other towns can give you a better idea of where you stand in the big picture. 8. Little fish in a big pond? And likewise, if you’re constantly losing to the same people, change things up a little and challenge yourself with some fresh competition. You’d be surprised how you’ll come back a better player. 9. Meet new and different people. Have a little fun. 10. Explore a new city. Do some sightseeing and enjoy yourself! The next time you get the chance to take a weekend road trip to a tournament, even if it’s just a neighboring town, take advantage of the opportunity. The benefits are countless. The 2nd Annual Southwest Pocket Billiard Championship held Nov. 4th-7th at Bull Shooters in Phoenix, AZ proved to be successful and worthy of consecutive events. Entrants came from as far as the Chicagoland area, Las Vegas, and many different areas in Arizona on a beautiful weekend for the four day event. The host site was well prepared; the food was good with different specials offered each day with fast and friendly service throughout. All play was on the 7 foot bar boxes that were in great condition. Eight –time World Champion, Nick Varner, offered an Instructional Clinic to those who desired to improve their pool playing skills. Nick graciously made his world class presence available each day to meet and greet the players and the public. On Saturday Nick displayed several of his talents proving why he is one of the most prolific players in the history of the game with a “Skills and Trick Shot” show. Nick explained each of the skills needed to perform each shot as he proceeded to make each one. Afterwards Nick mingled with the crowd providing autographs and participating in challenge matches. To have played with a real World Champion was a privilege and an honor as we all aspire to become so great! Our most special thank you to Nick Varner. The 2nd Annual Southwest consisted of a series of consecutive events from small to mid-size tournaments that were scheduled over the four day period. New divisions were Seniors 8-ball and 9-ball. The two day 8-ball tournament was split into three divisions, Platinum, Gold, and Silver for the purpose of placing players by skill levels. In the Open tournaments Platinum players had to play one extra game per match. Thursday opened with 9-ball Seniors. A field of thirteen participated. This inaugural event was well worth the money as one hundred percent of the entry plus added money made for a nice prize fund. Fourth place went to Milton Strack from Monticello, Illinois eliminated at the hands of sharp shooting Ed Scott. Placing Ed in third was Charley Huen who went on to face the rocking chair winner, Fred Boggs of Las Vegas. Having never experiencing a losing match in this event Fred was not about to be denied as he prevailed with a 6-1 victory capturing the first place prize. A qualifier was played in the Women 9-ball division. The results had Barb Allen tied with Leandrea Gaff at the finish. However, based on head-to-head play Barb was declared the winner placing Leandrea second with a 5-2 match play win. The Open 9-ball division had 24 entries with some great play within. Platinum players had to race one ahead of open players. Fifth/Sixth places went to John Nauman, barely missing a chance to advance and Mike Strudas . Fourth had Jimmy Moore who was defeated by the red hot play of Ben Sutherland who also ran over Ronnie Allen. This earned him a spot to play Fred Boggs in the championship round. After witnessing Ben’s display of skill Fred turned it up a notch for a convincing 6-0 shutout and the glory. Friday started with the Seniors 8-ball division. Twelve players (11 male & 1 female) were all in stroke to begin the match. The hottest player there had to be Dale Teague, master cue builder and local favorite, as he eliminated one opponent after another. Dale had to play Fred Boggs twice, winning when it counted, placing Fred in fourth 5-3. Dale then placed Milton Strack in third by a score of 5-3 before finally facing off with speedster Jimmy Moore of Las Vegas. Moore took the honors with a narrow margin of victory, 6-4 to again secure a title for Nevada.

The new Platinum division could have had an even dozen players but only four braved it out for a tough fought qualifier. The top two played a race to five for first and second. Richie Daniels, Prescott Valley, who lost in the qualifier, 5-4 to Larry Eans, returned the favor on the hill victory to secure the title. The Women Silver division qualifier came down to the wire. All had a chance to win depending on the last round scores. The final two were Sara Sorg and Vilene Stutsman that made a dash for the cash, taking the title with a 5-3 win. The Gold division consisted of open players only. Mike Strudas, Burns Harbor, Indiana, placed Todd Dilley in fourth. Still smarting from the last match, Vic Tyynismaa, Lake Havasu, put Mike in third. Chris Akey was well rested and waiting for Vic. Chris gained another title for Las Vegas with a resounding 4-1 win over Vic. Saturday evening introduced another new tournament, the 2+2 Sudden Death 8-ball/9-ball. This is a series of a race to two of 9-ball then 8-ball with the same opponent. In case of a tie a flip of a coin determined by the winner of the call, breaks the game of choice in a sudden-death tiebreaker. The championship was played by Troy Ridder and Jimmy Moore. Moore coming out of the one loss side won two matches securing another victory for Las Vegas. Brian Poore placed third. Super exciting is how it was described by many. With only three tournaments left Scotch Doubles began in the evening. Thirty-four players (17 teams) were ready for action. The proof of this were fifty percent of the matches tied until the last game. Platinum teams of Larry Eans/Sophia Marquecho and Marney Teague/Cecil Messer raced ahead of open teams’ two games and one game over teams with one Platinum player. Those teams raced one ahead of open division teams. This made for a very equal

field of play. Fighting their way undefeated to the rocking chair was the team of Tyson Cole/Beverly Cook. They arrived there with a bye, Rd 2 win over Donna/Charles, Rd 3 win over MaryHelen Mondragon/Richard Haynes, Rd 4 over Larry/Sophia, and Rd 5 Marybeth Johnson/Joe Nicita. On the one loss side Sophia/Larry defeated Veronica Poore/Carlos Avalos placing them fourth. The next match was quite the nail biter as the winner would play for the championship with Tyson/Beverly. Marybeth/Joe came away with a hill win placing Larry/Sophia in third place. Noteworthy is that Marybeth/

Joe are open players. They gave the very skilled team of Cole/Cook all they could handle. Without a doubt the Beverly/Tyson team was prepared to play as they won the well deserved first place honor in the finals. Sunday was the wrap up with the Lucasi Tour Stop 8-ball tournaments. Thirty players were divided into two divisions, open bar box (22) and open women (8). Each had added money as did all events throughout the four days.

As always the women players showed their intense competition level in the

qualifier as the 7th round of play held the results. Congratulations to the players that made this so exciting Lee White, Patience West, 2009 winner, Ann Burgess, Marney Teague, platinum player spotting one game, MaryHelen Mondragon, 2009 runner-up, and Lynda Niichel that placed third. The final was played between Pearl Napa and Leandrea Gaff with Gaff prevailing to take the crown 4-1. The Mens’ Open had 22 players dominated by one-third of the field that were platinum players. They raced one ahead, however; that did not deter the efforts of quiet Chris McCreary, Las Vegas. He proceeded to run

off racks against Jimmy Moore on the way to a fifth place finish. Joining him in fifth was his friend, Fred Boggs.

Chris almost went up one more rung on the ladder if not for the crafty play of Ronnie Allen, who came in fourth. By way of a split, Greg Kuhl, Las Vegas, and another local favorite Larry Eans were to face off for the rocking chair. Greg had just won over Chris Akey. Larry Eans was the winner with Greg Kuhl second and Chris Akey third. A total of 650.00 was added into the two divisions, 525.00 men and 125.00 women. Eans and Gaff also earned a paid entry into the 2011 National ACS Singles Championships at the Tropicana in Las Vegas May7th-14th. In the past two years the Southwest Championships have tried many different tournaments within the event. With this history, we now have a feel for the Players over-all desired discipline for future events. Our thanks to the experienced league operators that supported and ensured the success of the event. Special thanks to Jerry Stuckhart for his insight, Larry Eans, for all his hard work in promotion, Lee White and her loyal players, and the help of the various media outlets. The Greater Midwest Poolplayers Association is proud to announce that the event will be back at Bull Shooters next year. It is tentatively scheduled for October so that it does not overlap with the Tap Nationals. A new division called the Bronze Division will be in place as a walk up entry type. This will be geared toward the average and novice skill player. Allowing everyone to have a chance at winning the cash. With this support, the various divisions, and the great playing arena we look forward to big numbers next year.

Seattle OpenBy Shari RossLYNNWOOD, WAThe 4th annual Seattle Open at Uncle Jacks in Lynnwood, WA was nothing short of a who’s who in Northwest pool. With a full field of 64 and $1015 added to the event the players were vying for their share of a $3850 prize purse. Looking through the field it was hard to

find a true favorite having names like Glen Atwell, Stan Tourangeau, Dan Louie, John Doherty & Rich Geiler just to name a few, who could pick but in the end only 1 name was left, Damian Pongpanik, formally of Salt Lake City.Play kicked off Saturday morning with a couple big match ups first round putting 2 of the favorites on the b-side. Bob Zack was one of those, losing to Glen Atwell only to make a very strong comeback winning 7 on the b-side to finish 7-8. With the number of top players it was inevitable some would be on the back side with Bob while others remained on the A. Sunday morning found 6 of them on the b-side, Mark Vidal & Damian were amongst them, while players like Randy Camantigue, J.D., Glen Atwell and Lance Mason were still undefeated. Showing his hard work and love for the game Damian began his march through the toughest b-side I have seen outside of a pro event winning 6 matches to find himself in the semis against Glen Atwell. After a bit of back and forth Damian was up a couple games but was unable to keep Glen at bay. Glen then reached 8 first in this race to 9 to put the heat back on Damian for which he had the answer for emerging victorious earning the right to play Dan Louie who was sitting in the hot seat. Just like the semis, the finals started with the one for you one for me but about game 5 Damian started his run away. Never looking back he preceded to go on to win 11-6. And after an almost 30 hour tournament it was made know that this was Damian’s 1st win in the Northwest and if his play says anything at all its far from his last. Congrats Damian on your well deserved win. We would also like to say it was nice to see Hsin Huang back playing again and hope to see her more. And the honorable mention goes to Don Rachels for his comeback through the b-side after losing his first round match.Randy Camantigue (owner/operator) and his staff (Ana, Trisha, Linden, Candice,) & Shari Ross (tournament director) were prepared for everything to make sure all ran smoothly from the tournament to the service to the food. OTBnews brought in a top of the line setup so those of you who couldn’t be there could still have front row seats. And the proof is in the pudding, with over 66,000 unique viewers and 102,000 total views the people are saying this is what they want. Figuring in these numbers and

What a beautiful room! The warm, inviting atmosphere made you feel comfortable and welcome as soon as you walked through the door. We decided on the area and returned Friday to set up the OTBnTV booth. Four hours later everything was set up and ready to go. Mini tournaments were scheduled to start about 7 pm and Randy was trying to put together a ring game so we could live stream it, but it didn’t pan out so we stayed on the air for a few hours and signed off for the night.Saturday play started at 11 am and there was a full field of the best

The CPPT took to the road once again, traveling to On Cue Billiards in La Mesa the weekend of November 6-7 for the second Southern California stop of Tour. It was a great way to celebrate On Cue’s new owner, Clyde Nooris, who along with his family graciously welcomed us all to his spacious room by providing a delicious banquet -- it was most generous and much appreciated by all in attendance on Saturday. Even though our event was up against the Hard Times Bellflower first of the month tournament, thanks to the tireless efforts of our good friend Fran Smith, a fairly even mix of 49 players came to On Cue instead. Entry fees totaled $3025, which combined with $500 added by On Cue and $500 from Fran Smith’s Metro BCA League, made for a total prize fund of $4025 to distribute among the top 25% of the field. After the draws, the contestants got down to business and battled all day Saturday. When the smoke cleared 12 very excited players returned to the money round on Sunday. The format was very well received, and many players commented about how fair they thought it was. Even the usual “complainers” expressed approval, saying it was "fair and awesome." The popularity of the Magic Rack continues to grow as more players are introduced to it at CPPT events and experience first-hand its ease of use and superior performance. The 12 returning players vying for the prize money gave a hearty round of applause when they saw the payouts, then got down to the business of determining who would collect how much. Josh Ulrich and Bruce Choyce were the two finalists on the winners side of the Pro/A bracket, and Bobby Bosita and Carlo Cabarlo went undefeated in the B/C

bracket. Advancing from the one-loss side were B/C players Josh Silva, Joseph Dino, Franco Bressanutti , and Levi Lustado, and from the Pro/A bracket Jesse Garcia, Zeke Morrison, Dan Boone, and Paul Bramwell. Many of the players who did not make it to the second day were still happy to have participated and came back on Sunday to watch the finals. The money bracket was redrawn, the match-ups were made and the action began. On the winners' side, Carlo Cabarlo defeated Josh Ulrich 7-6 and Bruce Choyce defeated Bobby Bosita 7-4, resulting in a hot seat match between Carlo and Bruce. Carlo got the better of Bruce and won the match 7-4. On the one-loss side, Paul Bramwell finished in fourth place

with wins over Levi Lustado (who unfortunately had to forfeit his match due to family commitments), Joseph Dino 7-5 and Bobby Bosita 7-3 before losing to Dan Boone. Dan Boone defeated Jesse Garcia 7-6, Franco Bresanutti 7-3, Josh Ulrich 7-4 and Paul Bramwell 7-5 before he got to Bruce Choyce. Dan played well but couldn’t overcome Bruce’s hunger for a rematch with Carlo Cabarlo, losing 7-4 and finishing in 3rd place. In the final single race to 9, Bruce jumped out to an early 6-1 lead before Carlo came roaring back to life and took a 7-6 lead, which he never relinquished. Every roll seemed to go in Carlo’s favor during the second half of the match, and Bruce managed one more game before Carlo was able to close it out for a 9-7 victory.

Carlo played some excellent pool all weekend against some top-notch competitors to come out victorious, improving upon his 4th place finish at the College Billiards stop in September. Bruce displayed his talent and drive with his superior play in his first CPPT appearance, and will surely see him at future events. We were very fortunate to have live streaming provided by Chris Rose and Kevin Brock on both days of the tournament, which went off without a hitch and reached over 385 dynamic viewers during the broadcast. Several others took turns in the booth so that Chris and Kevin could also play in the tournament. (They were given reduced entry fees in exchange for their services.) The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with viewers complimenting the quality and content of the live streaming. A custom Dave Whitsell cue valued at $800 was donated to the CPPT and raffled before the final match was played on Sunday. Congratulations to Dave Warner on winning this beautiful cue! Many thanks to Dave Whitsell for his generous donation. "The CPPT tournament's format was very popular,” said Clyde. “It was a pleasure having them visit my establishment, and I look forward to hosting a stop next year.” Thanks again to everyone who came out to compete, watch and celebrate Clyde’s ownership of On Cue Billiards. Malarkey’s Thanksgiving 9-Ball Classic16th Annual

TACOMA, WAby: Andrea Saenz-Maes and Kimberly KirkQuickly becoming one of the largest independent events in Washington State, this 9-Ball Open tournament was a huge success with Malarkey’s in Tacoma hosting 100 of the Northwest’s top pool players. With this many players competing on the 10 newly retrofitted gold crowns, coming out on top of the pack takes more than just mastery of skill, but is a true test of endurance.Malarkey’s champion was Canadian Simon Pickering of British Columbia. Simon is the owner of West Coast Pool Table and the BCA League Operator in the greater Vancouver area. Simon is probably best known for his BCAPL National Grand Masters 8-Ball win over Shane Van Boening in Las Vegas in 2009. Mr. Pickering’s road to the hot seat was no easy undertaking either, with wins over Ryan Shaffer, Cindy Sliva, Jay Siongco, Glenn Atwell, Daniel Edwards, Eddie Mataya and Rich Geiler.After losing the match to Simon on the A side,2009 Western BCA 9 Ball Masters Champion Eddie Mataya made it to the finals match with wins over Glenn Atwell, Stan Tourangeau and Rich Geiler. Nice! The finals match started at __3am__ (yes, in the morning) and was a real nail-biter going hill-hill.We really enjoyed our time at Malarkey’s which is a great venue with a little something for everyone. They have eleven 9’ and nine 8’ tables, terrific food, a full bar and even a nightclub which Saturday night hosted comedian Marc Price, better known as Skippy from the ’80s show “Family Ties”. Malarkey’s owner Clark Smith is a great supporter of billiards and added almost $2,500 to the tournament. Thanks Clark! Tiger Products has joined the Tour as a title sponsor in 2011, providing high quality merchandise for raffle and sale. We are excited to be introducing Tiger products to our membership, and thank Tony Kalamdaryan for his support. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the players. When we first announced the Tour, over 50 people signed up for membership in the first month, including non-players who simply wanted to support a new tour in California. Membership gradually increased and currently stands at 170. Thanks to all of

you for embracing this unique new format and for doing your part to support the pool community! Some changes and improvements are in the works for 2011, including, among other things, a revised membership structure and reduced entry fees. We will do everything we can during the off-season to recruit more sponsors and players, but we need your help. Email your ideas or suggestions. Talk to other players and tell them about your experience. Approach your room owners and encourage them to host a stop. Contact us if you have sponsorship leads. Volunteer any special skills or services you can provide. Working together will ensure the continued success of the Tour. Damian Pongpanik defeated Dan Louie 11-6 around 1:30 am Monday morning and claimed the Seattle Open Title. His first victory since moving to the Northwest. CSI Preps for 2011 U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship and Adds 12th U.S. Open

One Pocket to May Riviera RosterLas Vegas becomes Mecca to top amateur and professional players worldwide every spring when CueSports International (CSI) moves into the Riviera Hotel & Casino Convention Center. Each May CSI produces a unique mix of the high octane amateur competition, with the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships, alongside equally exciting pro level events. In 2011, the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship enters its 2nd year at the Riviera May 16-21. The $25,000 added 10-Ball event will be limited to 96 players and preceded by the 12th U.S. Open One Pocket Championship. The U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship is a Billiard Congress of America (BCA) points event and recognized by the WPBA. In accordance, CSI will hold an invite spot for the top 20 U.S. men and top 10 WPBA players. The invitee’s spots will be guaranteed till March 18, 2011. The 30 invite letters will be sent out December 22-24, 2010. Any invite spots that are either declined or entry has not been paid by the March 18th deadline will revert to an open spot. The remaining 66 U.S. Open 10-Ball spots will include approximately 6-10 qualifiers. The qualifier’s locations and dates will start to be posted on the CSI and BCAPL sites by Mid-January. Prior to the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship, CSI will hold the 12th U.S. Open One Pocket Championship May 13-15 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. With $10,000 minimum added and a field size limited to 32 players, it is anticipated to attract some of the best one pocket players in the world. CSI will also be working with other producers and host rooms around the U.S. to schedule a limited number of qualifier spots. Further information about the 2011 U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship and the 12th U.S. Open One Pocket Championship can be viewed on the CSI (www.playcsipool.com) and BCAPL (www.playbca.com) websites by mid-December. The qualifiers will be listed on the sites by mid-January.CSI will be taking online registration for all CSI / BCAPL / USAPL events starting in January 2011. My Participation in the Billiard Education Tournament in De Kalb Illinois July 7-11 2010

by Chris ByersMy experience at this tournament was very fulfilling and I could not have attended this tournament without the support and help from the following individuals. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following individuals. Andrew Monstis and Sharon (Sassy) Campbell for their financial contribution (League Operators of Cascade Pool League) which I could not have attended without them. I would like to thank Steve Marker, (League Manager, also from Cascade Pool League) for contacting the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) to get the application process going and spearheading the financial contribution efforts. I would like to thank Sara Rousey from BCAPL in Henderson Nevada for her help in making sure my application got to the right people at the (BEF). I would like to thank Brendan Crockett and his dad (Bill) for allowing me to stay in their hotel room with them at the

tournament. I would like to thank Shelby Locati helping me financially and giving me supplies I needed for the tournament. I would also like to thank Simona and John for their friendship and support. I would like Paul Schorzman (Classic Billiards Owner) for providing me with free pool

time in preparation for this tournament. I would also like to thank the following individuals for donating their precious time in helping with my game prior to the tournament:Glenn Atwell Todd GoochDarrin Walding Andrew Monstis I was awarded 7th/8th place in the tournament out of 40 kids in my age group. I learned a lot, made a few friends and played a lot of pool. The tournament itself was very competitive and a very good experience for me since it was the first big tournament that I have attended. Lastly, I would like to thank everyone that donated money to help me get there, your generosity was much appreciated and to Mark Griffin from BCAPL

for their support in promoting billiards competition for junior players. My current plans are to attend the next tournament from the (BEF) this next year. Thank you again to everyone that made it possible for me to attend this tournament.

November 19-21st, 2011 the WPBA Amateur 9-Ball National Championships was held at the Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver, CO. The event featured 49 of the best amateur players from all over North America, which also included 21 of Colorado’s finest contestants. Friday night’s festivities included a players meeting that included words of encouragement from top-professionals Laura Smith and Nicole Keeney. The meeting concluded with a food/beverage reception sponsored by the Wynkoop and everyone went home with a special goodies bag that included a Wynkoop t-shirt and billiard items from Pool Dawg and the Colorado Cue Times. The 1st round began with eighteen 9 AM matches, and the rounds continued all day until play ended after three rounds of play around 6 PM. The top-24 players came back Sunday for day two and conclusion of the tournament. The most notable player of the weekend was the eventual champion Rebecca Wagner of Las Vegas, NV. She lost her first match to Sunny Griffin 7-4 and dominated each match after in the losers side winning matches

against players like Kathy Crump 7-5, Nicole Winters 7-2, then Sunday morning pouncing on Rebecca Masching 7-2, Lisa David’s 7-5, Jackie Karol 7-6, Jacqui Herrera 7-4, Sam Diep 7-6, Angela Jackson 7-6, Tammie Jones 7-3, and then a rematch against Sunny Griffin winning 7-2, to make it to the finals with the winner side champion Betty Sessions from Atlanta. The finals were one race to 9 and Betty got out to spectacular lead of 8-3. Late into the night, spectators were thinking it was all over until Rebecca took a five-minute break to come back to the table asking to win just one more game, then one more, and then one more until she eventually won six games in a row to win the championships 9-8. What a great showing from Rebecca, a player with so much heart and actually six-months pregnant with her second child. Rebecca also won a paid entry into the 2011 WPBA US Open for her efforts plus custom Delta-13 rack. Congratulations to Angela Jackson, Colorado’s highest finisher who won a custom Ernie Martinez cue for her efforts. A very special thanks to all of the volunteers

who donated countless hours to help with the event; Tournament director James Brothers, Chris Macey, David Merrell, Randy Little, Nicole Keeney, Laura Smith, Chris & Terry Hulseberg, Pete Way, Burt Maestas, Dave Gross, Steve Thomas, and also to the sponsors; Wynkoop Brewing, Pool Dawg, Delta-13, WPBA, and London Bridge.

More bets were placed, mine included, and Lucky broke, then stalled, giving up shots all over the place. He had to be trying to keep the players lined up to play him. While I was winning money by the narrowest of margins, I was thinking about Lucky’s illness, the only thing that would cause him to be playing this kind of pool. He must have needed the money bad. Lucky pocketed the nine on an early combination to end the third set. “I’m done,” the guy said. “My stakehorse quit, not me.” How many times have I heard that excuse, I thought. An older man wearing a nice sport coat stood up and asked Lucky to play some One Pocket. “We can bet more … five thousand a game all right with you? Lucky stood there chalking his cue for about ten seconds. Then he looked up at the guy and smiled. “I like that idea,” he said. They posted the money. This guy said, “I know you’ve been stalling - that doesn’t bother me.” Lucky took a break, and the challenger checked over his equipment. Side bets were placed. Chairs were rearranged. I got a good seat and table with a clear view of the pool table, and I was glad to see the old guy who took the other chair didn’t light up a cigarette. The waitress was kept busy taking orders for food and drink. Someone opened the door for a few minutes to clear the air. The atmosphere crackled. The stage was set. Lucky and the challenger who some said was a lawyer, lagged for the break. Lucky’s ball stopped an inch from the headrail, the challenger’s an inch behind.

Lucky reached for the cueball and set it for the break shot. But when he stroked through it, he stumbled, his legs buckling. Time stopped as Lucky flailed his arms in an attempt to regain his balance and not fall onto the table. Oh no! The cue ball hit the rack hard and opened up the table. Balls were scattering all over for an easy run. Then Lucky fell, his body folding to the floor. For a moment no one moved, then pandemonium broke loose. I was the first one to reach Lucky. “Stay back! Give him air! Call a doctor!” Lucky just lay there. I grabbed a coat someone handed me and placed it under his head. He was conscious and tried to talk to me. “It’s the illness,” he whispered. Oh boy, I thought. I tried to quiet him. “Don’t talk,” I told him. “Just relax, you’re going to be fine.” But he croaked, “Did I make a ball?” Several voices called out, “Yeah, we saw a ball drop in his pocket.” Lucky’s eyes closed, and I leaned down to check his breathing. He seemed to be slipping into unconsciousness. Now the crowd was becoming anxious on another level. “What about my bet?” I heard someone say. “He’s got to finish or he will forfeit the money he posted!” Lucky’s eyes fluttered open. He struggled to raise his arm. In a weak voice, he said, “Let him play for me.” He was pointing to me. Everyone’s eyes turned to me and lit up. Sure! Yeah! Some people in the crowd betting against Lucky said, “Sure let him finish, if that’s what Lucky wants.” “No!” I protested, trying to tell Lucky I couldn’t do it. I yelled, “Everyone stand back. Give him a break. He’ll finish the game, just give him a break.” The local doctor quickly arrived, and when he saw it was Lucky, he looked really worried. While he checked Lucky over, the crowd stood by, talking quietly. I stayed there with Lucky, and heard the doctor tell him he’d have to take him in to the hospital. Lucky shook his head feebly, and tried to get up, “No, I’m fine, I’m fine. I have to do this first. I can’t go now.” The doctor pushed Lucky back down and insisted. Lucky gave a tired sigh and stared up at me, his eyes pleading. “Drew, you have to play for me. I need you to win for me. Please, Drew, you can do it.” His eyes closed. I started to sweat. I never heard of this before. The players betting on the match talked it over and all agreed that it was fine with them. Lucky’s challenger sized me up and said, “Sure, he can finish the game. I took a deep breath, stood up, and said, “Ok, let’s do it.” I saw the corner of Lucky’s mouth turn up ever so slightly. We got him to the doctor’s car, and he kept whispering, “You can do it, you can do it, Drew.” I stood there, watching until it disappeared in the distance. Lucky, I will do this, I promised. I’ll do it for you. Slowly, I turned and walked back into the lion’s pit. I held Lucky’s cue, finding the balance, stroking the slender shaft. My shot. Oh man, I thought. The first shot was very difficult. If I missed playing it right, I’d sell out…why not just shoot and miss and let this guy win. Just give him the game. All I wanted to do was get in my car and go to the hospital. This game didn’t mean anything. But, with a sigh, I knew was important. Lucky’s health was at stake, and no one was just going to hand him a big wad of money. So the decision was made for me. As soon as I could get out of there, I got directions from the hotel to the town where the hospital was and took off in a cloud of dust. The hospital really wasn’t much

more than a small clinic, in fact, it looked like the veterinary clinic we take our cats to back home. A nurse in bright pink scrubs directed me to a room down the linoleum hall. She wouldn’t tell me anything. I feared the worst, I opened the door but found Lucky sitting up in bed, watching tv and I thought I saw Lucky spinning a pool ball on his finger as he quickly put what ever he was spinning under his covers “Are you all right?” I asked, concerned and confused. “Did you win?” “Lucky, are you all right?” “Did you win?” “Look, are you all right?” I was beginning to panic. And was he spinning a pool ball on his finger. “Yeah, I’m ok. Did you win?” “Lucky, I really need to know what’s going on,” I said to him. “I can’t deal with this. Why are you here? I don’t know what to do. I’m really worried.” Lucky sighed and looked at the ceiling. “You lost the money.” Frustrated, I paced the room. “Ok, the first shot was the hardest one of the whole game. When you miscued you messed up the table pretty good. I had to kick the fourteen, and make it or not, leave me good and him tied. The balls were fairly scattered, so I had catch a certain spot to get the leave. I wasn’t exactly geared up for the game, you know,” I stopped pacing and glanced over at Lucky, who was still studying the ceiling. “But I made it, and got the leave.” I reached in my pocket and pulled out ten thousand dollars and tossed it on the bed. “After that first shot the rest was pretty easy, actually.” Lucky reached out and collected the bills in gnarled fingers. I calmed down, then. I knew he wouldn’t tell me a darn thing until he was good and ready. No use getting into a knot about it. As Lucky smoothed out the bills, it occurred to me he might have done this whole thing to me on purpose. Did he set me up to challenge me? The whole thing seemed planned … choreographed, a real Oscar performance. Stop it, Drew, I said to myself. You don’t know anything about any of this. The door to Lucky’s room swung open and a doctor came in. When he saw me he asked me to leave for a few minutes. Lucky held up a hand, “No, doc, let him stay.” Then I found out that Lucky really was sick. I didn’t understand all that the doctor said, but the gist of it was that Lucky probably wouldn’t be around a much longer if he didn’t follow orders and take these medications. I looked at Lucky in alarm, but he didn’t seem bothered much by the prognosis. The doctor reassured Lucky that with regular medication and treatment, he’d be able to do pretty much everything right up to D-Day, whenever it came. Then he reamed Lucky up and down for not taking his advice. With a start, I realized he probably hadn’t had the money. Lucky threw me a warning look and said to the doctor, “Yeah, I know, I just keep forgetting.” Lucky didn’t have to stay long at the clinic, so we drove back to town to get his truck, and I followed him back to the ranch. I felt somewhat reassured by the doctor’s word’s that Lucky was going to be ok as long as he took his medication, and had made sure that he filled his prescription before we left the clinic. Lucky he had money on him, because the stuff cost a fortune without insurance. Over lunch, Lucky was assuring me he’d be ok, and I should go ahead and head for home. “I have friends here,” he

said. “I’ll be fine. But before you go, I want to propose something.” He chugged a half a glass of milk and swiped his mouth. “I want to go on the road. Can you get away for a couple of months?” Now that was something I didn’t expect. “I thought you never wanted to do that again,” I said, somewhat astonished. “Why now? You’ve got this great place and you seem happy here. Why would you want to go out there when you’ve got this?” With a twinkle in his eyes, Lucky scratched his head and said, “Well, I thought so too, but you know, if I’m only gonna be around for a little while, I kind of like the idea of shooting some stick. I’m getting kind of tired of this peaceful life anyway. I just need a couple of months to take care of some things here. So what do you think?” “Let’s do it,” I said without hesitation, already knowing my wife would be supportive and enthusiastic. “I’ll be ready.” I couldn’t turn this down! I was ready to jump up and leave so I could hurry up and get back “Good,” said Lucky, “and before we go, I will share more pool secrets with you.” We talked awhile longer, then said our goodbyes, and I left in a cloud of euphoria on one hand, and concern for Lucky’s health on the other. On the long drive home I was thinking that maybe I shouldn’t tell anyone what we were planning. Or that Lucky was sick. I still didn’t know how his illness would affect him on the road. Come to think about it, I still didn’t get his real name, either! Well, you’ll all be the first to know how it went. But that will be awhile down the road…I still can’t figure out how he can spin a pool ball on his finger. I have to practice spinning that ball.
