For anyone that has traveled and played tournaments, every pool hall in every town has its own characteristics. Whether the table has a lean to it or the lighting is different or the felt is slow, top players learn to deal with it. Top players like eight-time world Champion Nick Varner and four-time world champ, Johnny Archer don’t let those kind of playing conditions affect them and advise others of the same.“You have to learn to adjust to the equipment,” Varner told the crowd of spectator during a question and answer session when the Legends and Champions Pool Tour stopped at Black Diamond Billiards and Eatery in Spokane, Wash on April 10 and 11. With a microphone in hand, Archer ran a table, explaining how he analyzes

the table, identifying trouble balls and his shot selection. He later added that he does not like draw English because speed and draw length are hard to control. In an interview after the exhibition, Archer pointed out how to improve on an often overlooked aspect of the game, “Stick with a pre-shot routine,” Archer said with a prominent, Georgia accent. “It helps you stay in the moment better.” Staying in the moment took some time to learn. Archer said as he was coming up through the ranks, playing in bigger, higher profile tournaments toughened up his mental game and made him concentrate on the basics. He said the size of the crowd and the television lights made him nervous the first time he played a televised match. Archer said he

adjusted and learned to block it all out. The experience helped in the long run. He said the exposure improved his confidence, making him a better player. In the exhibition, Varner also demonstrated numerous masse and trick shots including shooting a ball out of a spectator’s mouth and the shot from the Lite Beer commercial in the early 1980s created by Steve Mizerak. Archer and Varner took questions from the audience, a few of then centering on less then ideal playing situations like unlevel tables and what female player they would be partnered with to play mixed doubles. The exhibition finished with a challenge match. Steve Rijon of Spokane, Wash., won a “Play the Pro” tournament held at Black diamond on April 4. He emerged out of a field of 25 players to be eligible to play a race-to-seven set against Archer. Archer was also gracious enough to spot Rijon “two on the wire.” With an early advantage, Rijon went right after the “Player of the 1990s,” wrestling two matches away from Archer to take a 4-0 lead. That’s when the music stopped for Rijon and the Archer show started. Archer answered with a break and run, a run out from a Rijon break, an early 9, a run out after a skirmish of safeties, and then broke and ran again, taking a 5-4 lead. The eighth table of the match was ugly because balls were clumped up. Archer uncharacteristically missed, and Rijon had to kick after a hooking himself. Archer took that games and ran out another time to win 7-4. Both Varner and Archer have a lot on common. They’re both from the southern U.S., they both started playing as teenagers. The Kentucky-raised Varner, got serious about playing pool in 1969 while attending Purdue University. He has won 80 major titles and been a world champion eight times in five different pool games. He was inducted into Billiards Congress of America's Hall of Fame in 1992. The Georgia-born and raised Archer is a four-time world champion, a six-time player of the year and has won 37 major titles since 2000.

Toadstool held its first annual ladies only Sunday 8-Ball Tournament on March 25th. A successful turnout of 18 competitive women from Southwestern Idaho and Eastern Oregon including our consolation champ who came all the way from Southcentral Oregon. This event attracted quite a few male fans for a packed house at Toadstool Billiards in Emmett, Idaho. Several players came together from different leagues, some of which had never played with BCA 8-Ball rules. Entries were kept to an affordable amount of $20 and greens fees of $5 were all returned to the prize money by the Toadstool to promote this annual event. When asked why we came up with this event, owners, David and Suzanne Mackey, "wanted to do something special for the ladies of pool". "This will be an annual event and shows much promise for future interest!" Each of the ladies took home a long-stemmed yellow rose from the Toadstool and a new insight into the caliber of players rising up out of our area. A good time was had by all! The Calcutta

brought in a total of $260 that

was distributed among the top three players and their successful bidders. Special thanks to the Pool & Game Table Store of Boise, Idaho, for co-sponsoring this event. See you again soon! Please note that the 4th annual tax relief tournament has been moved to Sunday April 15th due to a scheduling conflict with VNEA end of year league banquet.

“The Viper”THIS MONTHS FEATURE REFLECTS MORE POOL RELATED QUESTIONS ASKED BY MY FB FRIENDS.

QuestionsMark Chernin/Topeka, KSHow many balls have to hit a rail on the break playing one-pocket?

Viper: After contact, only one ball has to hit a rail, which includes either an object ball or the cue ball.

Adam Pfeifer/Manhattan, KSWhat kind of an aiming system do you use?

Viper: When I was younger I used the light system; the light system is looking at the reflection of the table lights on the object balls. When cutting a ball into a pocket you would draw a imaginary line from the right side of the reflective light on the cue ball to the left side of the reflective light on the object ball and shoot into that imaginary line to pocket the ball. But as I got older, I started working on my pre-shot routine and approach to each shot. So, my routine is to look at the ball to the pocket, then the cue ball to the object ball, and then walk into each shot. As far as my current system, I use more of the mirror image system. But, I suggest that each of you Google “Aiming systems for pool” and find one that best suits your game and thinking.

June Smith/Littleton, COWhat drills do you find most effective?

Viper: June, I think ANY drill is good for your pool game. Personally I like to play the ghost or 15-Rack which is basically the formats my local 10-ball league. For more on how to play visit www.15rack.com. But if you want just plain old drills visit a cool site here: www.ozonebilliards.com/drillsgt.html developed by Dominic Esposito and hosted by Ozone Billiards.

Aaron Kieu/Loveland, COHow does the (intimidating factor) effect players and what can I do to overcome it?

Viper: When others intimidate players usually the victims body goes into fight or flight responses. There blood pressure rises, the mind is scattered, and/or there brain freezes. And most of the time there emotions cloud there thinking as well as their motor skills. I was taught to practice as if you were participating in the world championships ALL of the time. So when it becomes show time, you will be ready for any kind of pressure. Now, if a player tried to intimidate me at the table then I try and go back to the basics of the game and really focus on my pre-shot routine. Believe me it’s a working progress for me and the other pros! Remember, that it’s okay to be nervous… and, all that means, is that you’re alive and ready to compete.

Travis Rohrich/West Fargo, NDHow do I know if the tip I use is right for me and how I shoot?

Viper: Travis, it really is trial and error but I suggest you ask your local pro what they use. There are sooo many good tips out there I could not even try and suggest them all. But I can tell you that I LOVE using a layered tip called the “Sniper” made by Tiger Products based out of California. Why? Because this particular tip does not allow for me to miscue, it lasts longer then a normal non-layered tip, and I feel like I get more action off of it.

Passing Through How many times towards the end of a game of 8 ball have you found yourself frustrated by a position like those in the diagram? You have cleared your group and are ready to claim a win except for one unfortunately placed ball of your opponent. Here are six techniques that may help you escape from this trap and win on this turn. In Shot 1 the 8 and the 11 are frozen together. In this situation, if you shoot the 8 straight towards the 11 -- and in the diagram hitting the 8 full will drive it directly towards the 11 as required -- the 8 will travel forward after the 11 leaves. Draw on the cue ball will help with this but it’s not absolutely required. To test the shot without draw, put a third object ball in front of the 8 where you want the cue ball to land and try the 3-ball combo. Shoot firmly. The middle ball (8) should follow the other ball into the pocket. The 8 and 11 must be really, really touching; even a small gap will destroy the action. In Shot 2 a different technique is needed because the 8 is not touching the 12. Depending on the balls, it may be possible to use draw on the cue ball and transfer enough follow to the 8 ball that it will follow the 12 into the pocket. Try this on your table with about a quarter-inch between the 8 and 12 and with medium draw on the cue ball. Super draw is bad here because it will just slip on the 8 and not grab. Try different speeds from moderate to high to see what works. While trying the draw shot method, you may have found the third technique: if you shoot Shot 2 hard with a little elevation, the cue ball may jump up a little and land on the 8 which is still whereit was when it hit the 12. This is a little risky as you might land the cue ball on the floor instead. A fourth technique works in Shot 2 if you are playing with a “bar ball” -- a large cue ball on a table that has that kind of ball-return sorter. Just shoot firmly with draw. The cue ball, being more massive than the 8, will not stop on contact but will slide through to contact the 8 ball a second time. In situations like this you can get remarkable draw from a cue ball that normally destroys your backspin. A fifth technique, also for the position in Shot 2, is to use follow on the cue ball. This is a finesse shot and you must shoot along the right line with the right speed. If the shot is not absolutely straight, you will have to

pick the angle that will maintain the needed cue ball-8 ball contact. Shot 3 shows a situation where the table will provide the needed follow for the 8 ball. As the 8 travels across the cloth to the 13, it will pick up top spin by rubbing on the cloth. The amount depends on the distance it travels before hitting the 13, the stickiness of the cloth, and the speed of the shot. On this shot you do not want high speed as that doesn’t give the 8 ball time to pick up spin. Try this shot on your table with a variety of speeds and distances between the balls to see what works best. Finally, you shouldn’t overlook a safety opportunity if you are not ready for the “hero shot.” In Shot 2, playing the combo very softly will leave your opponent stuck for a shot if he doesn’t have something nearby to shoot at.

BY DAVID TELLER Don’t fall asleep in the Spokane open because it may result in an early trip home. A few players learned that parable in some key match ups in the open 9-ball tournament in Spokane, Wash. A little motivation goes a long way as a come-from-behind wins determined many of the matches. The 9-ball event brought 53 great shooters from all over the northwest to Black Diamond Billiards and Eatery on March 31 and April 1, with Brady Gollan nabbing the top prize for the eighth time. In early rounds, Gollan, the sixth place finisher in both the 2011 Canadian snooker open and 10-ball open, coasted through the tournament, drawing a bye in the first round, then posting convincing wins: 7-0, 7-2, 7-2, 7-3 and 7-2 to get the driver’s seat. For the rest of the field, advancing in the tournament wasn’t so easy. Stan Tourangeau staved of a surge from Damian Pongpanik in a fourth round match up. The two went toe-to-toe until they were at 3-3. Pongpanik had a crucial miss, then a bad roll and quickly found himself down 6-3. Undeterred, he tightened up his game, played more conservatively to catch up and make it 6-5. Tourangeau, who won the U.S. Bar Table 9-Ball Championship last February, cleanly ended it with a break and run to win 7-5 and advance to the fifth round of the winner’s bracket. Down to the final twelve, the second day had some key match ups too. Tourangeau got ahead of Eddie Carrido, 5-2, but cooled off. Carrido charged back and beat him, 7-6.Freshly deposited in the loser’s bracket, Tourangeau held off another come-from-behind attack. He was up 4-2 against Daniel Vostitsiamos, who turned it around and got Tourangeau down 5-4. Tourangeau crawled back on top eventually winning, 7-6. Jumping from the kettle to the fire, Tourangeau out lasted the fast-paced, hustler-style play of Miguel Morfin in a tight race-to-7 to get another shot at the man that put him in the one-loss bracket, Carrido.

Tourangeau continued playing strong. The two were tied up at 2-2, and then a stingy Tourangeau commanded the table and held off Carrido who scratched on the 9 when Tourangeau was on the hill. The 7-5 loss gave Carrido a third place finish. In the finale, Golan jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of break and runs. Tourangeau answered back with a pair of his own. Golan, who had a make on every break in the match, managed to wrestle away. another three matches to get a 5-2 advantage. Tourangeau’s offense heated up with a few more run outs,

but his effort was cut short when he sold out the 9 with Gollan on the hill. Gollan won 7-5. Two NWPA players, Shelby Locati and Sheila Clark, double dipped in the tournament action. Both players made a splash in the open tournament and then split the finale of the women’s tournament also being held at Black Diamond. In the match for the driver’s seat, Locati soundly beat Clark 5-2. Clark, who was the top female finisher in the open tournament, went toe-to-toe against Phyllis Fernandez to get another shot at the top prize. Worn out from competing in two tournaments and facing long commutes, the player’s opted to split the first and second place prize. Both tournaments were played by Billiard Congress of America rules on 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown tables with Red-Circle cue balls and an alternating break. For the open tournament, the entry fee was $50 with $10 greens fees and $830 added. The total purse for the open tournament was $2950. The race was to seven on the winner’s side and to five on the loser’s bracket. When the disqualifying matches ended in a payout, the

loser’s bracket matches were a race to seven. For the Women’s tournament the entry was $25 with $5 greens fees, the purse was $325. The race was to five on the winner’s side and to four on the loser’s bracket. When the disqualifying matches ended in a payout, the loser’s bracket matches were a race to five. Tournament director for both events was Brian Kvasnicka. Black Diamond Billiards is located at 9614 E. Sprague, Spokane Valley, Wash.

The first time I saw this shot was on a video by Yoshikazu Kimura. Everyone loves this shot, which Earl Strickland christened the Slam Dunk. Others call it the Smiley Face or Half Moon Shot. The set up is the big key to this shot because three of the balls must travel long distances to the corner pockets. So take care in lining up the combos and tangent lines as shown on the diagram. Hit the cue ball in the center and aim for a full hit on the 1-ball. Use a hard stroke. When practicing this shot, it helps to have a friend watch closely so they can tell you where each ball that misses hits the rail. This will help you make the necessary adjustments. For instance, if the 2-ball hits to the left of Pocket A, you will need to move it clockwise just a little so that the tangent line points a little farther up the long rail. You can place a series of object balls where the dots are located. This makes the shot even more impressive because the balls in the cluster appear to explode out of the center of the table. Once you’ve mastered this shot, you might try placing glasses of water where the dots are located. But be aware that an error could possibly damage the cloth.

GETTING WAXED IN JAPANI was in Japan for a TV show when disaster struck on the Slam Dunk. Before an exhibition I always go over the table and check out my shots, especially the set-up shots. After evaluating the table I decided to go to dinner before the show. While I was gone the organizers waxed the balls to a bright

shine. The producers wanted them to look their best for the show. Before I left for dinner the balls looked immaculate. So when I went back to the table I didn’t think the waxing would affect my shots. I was wrong. I set up the Slam Dunk with 13 shot glasses full of water spaced so that the balls would go between the. When I shot hard into the 1-ball, it forced through a little more than I had planned for and hit the point of the side pocket. It then bounced out across the table, breaking four of the glasses. I was reminded of why 13 is the unluckiest of numbers. It was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. Now when I do an exhibition and use glasses of water, I always leave this shot for last just in case. In all of the times I’ve played this shot, this is the only time I’ve spilled a drop. Whew!

I am in Manila right now filming a clip for a company in New Zealand.

I am in Manila right now filming a clip for a company in New Zealand. This place has a wonderful following for the game of pool. In many restaurants they have a poster of Effren Reyes. He is a national hero in the Philippines. How do you become a hero in this game? You must learn how to practice. This is vital to any form of skill development. Deliberate practice and specific training will take away any limits you might have. It is not talent that brings you to the top it is commitment and a dedication to excellence. Effren once walked in to a Chicago pool hall broke and ran three racks of rotation in a row. That killed all his action. He is that good. He could very well be the greatest player who ever played the game. He told me he spent hours upon hours working on one shot. He did not run balls he worked on building skills. He would set up a shot and see if he could get the cue ball three rails to land on a dime circle. He ever told me he used my 2-7-2 Cue Ball Speed system to perfect his position play. What I like about these Filipino players is that they perfect one shot before they move on. They know how to train. I had a student in Russia who went through my book The Lesson and mastered every single lesson. When I was in Moscow we filmed him shooting each shot. His sponsor told me he worked on The Lesson book for almost two years. In New Zealand Matt Edwards worked on shots from The Lesson until he became the top player in the south Pacific. I really enjoyed working with this remarkable boy. We spent two years together. His skills are enormous. You become a hero when you work on skill development. These players and many more champions did not throw balls on the table and play games. They did not go out and compete in meaningless matches, instead, worked for hours on Cue Ball Speed, Shot Making and the Four Strokes of Pool. I went to a pool hall here in Manila and worked on a Cue Ball Speed pattern from my book THE ROAD PLAYERS NINE BALL TRAINING. I told myself

to slide across the table for an angle shot on the next ball. Many times I went too far and ended up straight. I continued my training. It was vital I build the muscle memory that would enable me to land the cue ball in a specific spot. Once I achieve this, I logged it in my mind and continued to deliver the stroke that would give me the desired results. I became aware of how it felt, what it sounded like and the visual experience of seeing the ball slide to the right spot. In other words, I mastered the skill until it became mine. When you “pile rocks” you must focus on one specific skill. I will shoot balls and pay close attention to how I land on the cue ball and my finish. I shot many shot like this. I also focus on the sound of the cue tip going through the cue ball. There will be times in a match when I am tired and cannot think. I will need to recall how it sounds to hit a good shot. I build skill in everything I do. Training is skill development. You must also build the way you think. Effren Reyes once faced a tough three rail shape shot to win close to a half of million US dollars. He could have clinched the shot and then had a tough shot on the eight ball. I would have done that. I would not have taken the chance with the three rail shot for position. Effren, on the other hand, knows what shot to shoot. That is his mind set. “I try to shoot the right shot all the time”. He is not thinking about the money. He has mastered his mind. After he delivered the stroke, he was straight in with an easy shot on the winning eight ball. See the shot know the stroke shoot the shot. You should begin your training so you become a hero, if not a hero in the world, a hero in your home town. Become the player you deserve to be. I have scheduled a two day workshop in Atlanta Georgia for May 26th & 27TH. I hope you will make plans to attend. Go to my web site, www.monkbilliardacademy.net and learn the details of this remarkable workshop. As always, I bring exciting guest teachers so you receive personal attention to your skill development.

e had a beautiful day in Everett on Sat the 21st of April. So lets cover the windows and hang out in the bar all day.The Everett

Invitational was back after a year hiatus. It just seemed like there was not enough weekends. We brought it back this year and still got scheduled over. Oh well, thank you to all the players who

participated!! A very special thanks also goes out to the owners of the White Buffalo and the Soundview Bar and Grill. Both places sponsored the event by donating $250. each. Without a full field, to get all of the added money, is well, unheard of. More thanks to the staffs of the two bars where we played, great job!! The food and service was awesome, and the pizza at the White Buffalo is very, very good. We had 8 teams come together, and DJ cues.com with Miguel Morfin, Chris Suarez, John Te, and Clay Belvoir, came out on top and won $1050. and $350 in side pot. 2nd place went to Islanders Paul Purdy, Ben and Chuck Hassler and Randy Click. winning $630 and $210 side pot. These two teams also met in the first round of this tourney with DJ cues.com taking that match in route to the point. Soundview Bar and Grill with Jim Conway ,Greg Odal ,Loy Long and Ed Slade picked up the final piece of the prize money with 3rd place and $ 420. and $140 in side pot.

Tribute to

Grady ‘The Professor’ MathewsJanuary 3, 1943 - April 18, 2012

They called him ‘The Professor”, but they could just as aptly have called him Mr. One Pocket. It is hard to imagine a model for

contributing more to the game of One Pocket than exhibited over the career of Grady Mathews; he has truly been an ambassador to the game.

Born January 3, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas, when Grady was a teenager his family moved to San Mateo, California, just about 25 miles outside of the pool Mecca of San

Francisco. Grady was a good natural athlete, but once he got started with pool, that is where he turned his attention. He proved to be an adept student of pool, especially the game of One Pocket, honing his skills at fabled Cochran’s in San Francisco in the early 1960’s before he took to the road. Just about every great player of that era made appearances at Cochran’s. As Grady tells it, “You had guys there at Cochran’s like ‘Bananas’ Rodriguez. ‘Mexican Phil’ was another one. Those two guys couldn’t run a lot of balls, but boy could they play One Pocket! The young guys like me and Rich Marques and Ronnie Barber and Denny Searcy and ‘One Eyed Hank’; we’d kick shots around, trying different ways to do things. We learned pretty quickly as young people are wont to do. I don’t think you could find a better learning facility than Cochran’s.” Grady actually worked at Cochran’s for a while, until it became clear he could make more money playing pool than he could working. In the late 60’s, Grady moved to Texas and ended up at another great action room, Le Cue in Houston, frequented by such greats as Jack ‘Jersey Red’ Breit, Danny Jones and ‘Connecticut’Johnny Vevis, the winner of inaugural Johnston City One Pocket tournament.

In 1975 Grady opened his own poolroom in Denver, CO, which he ran for seven years. It was during this time that Grady’s One Pocket game really matured.

It was also during this time that he recalls first starting to take notes about the

nuances and details of One Pocket – the kind of studying that may have contributed to his moniker, ‘The Professor’. Those notes certainly contributed to his wealth of knowledge about the game, and over the years Grady really developed his role as teacher, including many years of regular magazine columns, eleven instructional videos on the game, hundreds of exhibitions, clinics and private lessons all over the US – mostly featuring One Pocket. As a tournament player, Grady topped very tough fields to win four major One Pocket tournaments: • 1983 Red’s Open One Pocket • 1984 Sid Mann’s World One Pocket • 1985 Red’s Open One Pocket • 1995 Olathe, KS Legends of One Pocket As a One Pocket tournament promoter Grady brought fans of the game 19 major One Pocket tournaments spanning twenty years, including his gold standard, Legends of One Pocket. The “Super”One Pocket tournament he and his good friend Richie Florence promoted in 1993 (won by Ed Kelly) featured what to this day is the highest purse for a One Pocket event. Many of his Legends of One Pocket tournaments were filmed by Accu-stats featuring excellent expert commentary, leading to a wide distribution of One Pocket knowledge to a whole new generation of players and fans. All of this adds up to why Grady was the top vote-getter for our very first One Pocket Hall of Fameelection back in 2004. He was the ideal candidate -- a great player, great teacher and tireless promoter of the game. Yes, he is ‘The Professor’, but you could also call him ‘Mr. One Pocket.’

Thank you, Grady Mathews, for your unsurpassed contribution to the legacy of pool, and especially One Pocket.

A CHAMPION

Billings, Montana

Jeff Boucher

McmoaBY: DON “CHEESE” AKERLOW

MCMOA STATE 8-BALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 32ND ANNUAL WAS FINALLY HERE. DUE TO A SCHEDULING CONFLICT WITH THE VENUE WE WERE NOT ABLE TO SET UP THE OTBNTV LIVE STREAMING EQUIPMENT UNTIL THURSDAY BECAUSE THE NEW VALLEY POOL TABLES HAD TO BE IN PLACE FOR THE TEAM EVENT.

We were really excited about returning to the convention center at the Holiday Inn Grand Montana in Billings, Montana. This room is spacious, plenty of room for players and guests. The tables were spaced far apart with seating in between each row.

The 2012 Montana Coin Machine Operators Association (MCMOA) 8-Ball Championships. Thursday was the beginning of the tournament with a Team Championship. This was a 4 person team which had to have at least 2 original members of a VNEA Sanctioned team. Next year 2013, will be a change to the team event. All players must be a sanctioned VNEA player according to Sid president of the MCMOA. Talks are also being discussed for an A and B Team Divisions.

Round Robin format with 14 teams participating. The team with the highest total points would win the event. The teams assembled and play began around 6pm. We started the OTBnTV live stream around 7:30 pm and continued until 12:30 pm. Play was scheduled to begin around 9 am Friday morning and

continue until all the teams had played each other and the champions were crowned.

We went live at Noon and the tournament finished around 5:30 pm with the final match on the TV table being between the first and second place teams. The Cats Paw team had a 21 point lead going into the match. The Helena Eagles team jumped out to a 40-6 lead erasing the 21 point lead and went on to win the match 132-66 and the championship. The Eagles #4 team from Helena, Montana consisting of Dan Hamper, George Price, Jerry Churchill and Josh Morgieau. Taking second place was the Cats Paw team from Bozeman, Montana with Jeff Grinwis, Doug Crossman, Jon Kaphammer and Nick Douma.

The MCMOA Singles tournament immediately followed the Team event and got underway around 7 pm Friday night players played one round or until you lost and would return at 9 am Saturday to continue. Many past winners were in attendance again this year, trying to capture another title. For the men there was Jeff Boucher (‘12, ‘07, ‘06, ‘04, ‘99), Dave Schwartz (‘00), Nick Douma (‘09), Dan Hamper (‘10, ‘08, ‘03), David Willis (‘10), Brian Dyson (‘06), John Townes (‘05), Terry Bummer (‘96, ‘93) and Jeff Grinwis (‘04). On the women’s side it was Janet Dunks (‘11, ‘99, ‘92), Linda Asleson (‘10, ‘08, ‘06, ‘04, ‘95), Morgan Steinman (‘12, ‘09, ‘05, ‘03, ‘01), Sky Tigart (‘07, ‘02, ‘96), Susan Miller (‘97) and Misty Debates (‘12, ‘09).

Saturday brought some great matches to the TV Table and all throughout the event. The tournament was full of surprises. Saturday the races were to 3 while Sunday would see the men race to 4 with the finals being a race to 5 and the women to 3 and 4 for the finals.

Jeff Boucher was in the hot seat in the Men’s A Singles and sat in the OTBnTV booth and commentated for several matches while awaiting his opponent in the finals. There were some good back and forths on how to play the table with different strategies between myself and Jeff.

Jeff has sat in the OTBnTV booth on several occassions. The commentary has always been interesting with different styles and knowledge of play. Jeff and I go back a long ways, back to the 80’s when Jeff was living in Butte, Montana. It was easy to see with Jeff’s commentary that the most important part of his game (between the ears) was in tune. Brian Dyson also sat in the booth for a match and gave his insights into the match we were live streaming. Brian said that he’s never had much trouble talking but sitting in the booth was harder than he anticipated. His expertise was obvious being a past winner himself (2006). The Men’s B Division was being played on an adjacent table and we were able to live stream some of the match between Dan Horn and Mike Thompson. Congratualtions Dan for winning the B Division. We went back and forth between the Men’s A Division and the B Division. The Women’s A Division was more of a challenge since they were playing several tables away but after the Men’s tournament finished we were able to live stream the last shots and see Morgan Steinman take the title against Sky Tigart. Congratulations.Unfortunately the Women’s B Division match was out of camera range and we were unable to live stream it. Misty Debates and Jessica Jenewein were battling it out for the

championship and Misty came out on top. Congratulations, Misty. OTBnTV would like to thank the MCMOA, Holiday Inn Grand Montana for allowing us to live stream this and providing us with great accommodations and a great venue. We would also like to thank Tiger Products our title sponsor. Local sponsors for the OTBnTV LIVE Stream are the Molly Brown in Bozeman, Reno Club in Billings and Rocky Mountain Gaming from Bozeman. This was another great tournament and we are looking forward to next year. See you there! On the last live streaming Singles-14 you will at the end find an interview of Jeff Boucher and Morgan Steinman. http://www.ustream.tv/otbntv-live We had over 160,000 live viewers. Thank you everyone.

Takes the TitleThe Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour (TWCWT) got off to a roaring start for 2012, hosting the California State 9 Ball Championship for the first time. More players (56) entered the State Championship than entered any of our previous tournaments or any State Championship in the past several years. Part of our success was due to the cooperation of the So Cal Ladies 9 Ball Tour (SCL9T) and Melissa Herndon, its director. They helped spread the word and several players made the trip up from Southern California to compete. Our two tours have agreed to reciprocal membership privileges and to alternate hosting of the State Championship. Our goal is to get more women playing more pool up and down the State and to grow the size and prestige of the State Championship. Melissa Herndon, of course, is an outstanding pool player and a former tourning pro as well as a tour director. It was a treat for Northern California fans to get a chance to see Melissa play. California Billiard Club was a perfect

setting for the event. Having 22 Brunswick Gold Crowns kept the Tournament moving along nicely and the availability of spectator seating allowed many people to enjoy the action. The good food and full bar contributed to everyone’s comfort as well. Our format was double elimination, race to 7 on the winners’ side, race to 5 on the one loss side. On Saturday we played down to the top 8. Two contenders who drew each other in the first round were Stacy Novak, a top player from So Cal and Mary Rakin, a top player from Nor Cal. Mary was up for the challenge, defeating Stacy and moving on with wins over Kirsten Karim and Carolin Koo, before losing to Melissa Herndon in a tough hill/hill match. Like Melissa, Revelina Um made it through to Sunday without a loss. On the other half of the chart, Eleanor Callado and Bonnie Plowman, who had been steadily making their way toward another of their many confrontations, were the other two players who remained unbeaten

Saturday. On the one loss side, Heather Pulford defeated Tiffany Finnan to make it to Sunday, while Mary Rakin beat Vivi Chen to do the same. Emilyn Callado (yes, there are two of them) lost her first round match then won 5 straight matches to stay in the hunt. In the final match of Saturday night, Stacy Novak who, like Emilyn, followed a first round loss with five consecutive victories, played Teresa Tong Mojica whose only loss had been to Eleanor Callado. Teresa, who once worked at California Billiard Club, is a very popular player who hasn’t been able to make many stops on the tour in recent years. She was having the tournament of her life. The magic seemed to continue as Teresa played to a 4-1 advantage. But Stacy, no pushover, fought back to hill/hill. In the case game, with only the 8 and 9 balls on the table, Stacy shot what seemed to be a good safety. Teresa then made the best shot of the night, kicking into the 8 Ball and pocketing it, while sending the cue ball off a second rail into nice

shape on the 9. Those watching the match were silent for a moment in amazement then burst into applause. Calmly, with no hesitation, Teresa pocketed the 9 Ball from the far end of the table winning herself a spot in the final 8. On Sunday morning, Emilyn Callado ended Teresa’s run with a 5-4 win. Heather Pulford finished with a loss to Mary Rakin. Melissa Herndon met the always competitive Revelina Um, getting past her 7-5 to claim a place in the hot seat match. The lion’s share of the attention, however, was on the Eleanor Callado-Bonnie Plowman match. These two are friends who know each other very well as players having battled many times. Unsurprisingly, their match reached hill/hill. With Eleanor at the table facing a spread of balls that looked like she could run out, the six ball rattled out of the pocket. Bonnie took over and finished out the game. El was sent to the one-loss side while Bonnie progressed to the hot seat match. In that match Melissa, looking very much the Dragon Lady of her WPBA tour days, was overpowering--easily winning the hot seat. But Bonnie, having more second and third place finishes on the TWCWT Tour than she cares to think about, has had a habit of making her way back from the one loss side to the finals. Before she could go to work though, there were matches to be finished between Emilyn Callado and Revelina Um (Revelina won 5-1) and between Eleanor Callado and Mary Rakin: the first and second place players respectively over the TWCWT 2011 season. (Bonnie was third.) Eleanor and Mary are also well matched players with a long history of competition. This time Eleanor had the best of yet another hill/hill match and went on the defeat Revelina, leading to an encore with Bonnie. TWCWT fans all knew Bonnie could take a match from Eleanor, but no one had yet seen her take two matches from El in one tournament. Turned out, this was the day. Bonnie won the case game and headed to the finals to take on the Dragon Lady a second time. In the final, Melissa took the first game. But Bonnie’s energy was entirely different from what it had been in the hot seat match. When Melissa hung the six ball in the second game, Bonnie went on to win it and pushed the score to 5-1 before Melissa won a second game. Bonnie came right back to take the next two games and reach the hill. Melissa managed to bring the score to 6-4 before Bonnie finished it. A race to 5, second set was played to determine the winner. Again, TWCWT followers had seen Bonnie come from the one loss side to take the first set of a final more than once, but they hadn’t yet seen her take both sets and win a tournament. Turns out, this was the day for that too. Melissa took the first two games; Bonnie got the next two. She gained her first lead at 3-2. The sixth game was the pivotal game of the match. Bonnie scratched on the 8 leaving Melissa with a very makeable 9. But Melissa hung the 9 and instead of being tied 3-3, she was behind 2-4. Bonnie took the next game and the title of California State 9 Ball champion. Bonnie is no stranger to titles having been the Canadian National

Champion in both 8 Ball and 9 Ball. But this one--following as it did a year of frustration when she was always close but never first--had to be particularly sweet. At the trophy presentation she was asked if she wanted to say anything. She wouldn’t take the mic but she mouthed “Monkey off back” to the crowd. The tournament was also a double qualifier for the WPBA US Open. Those players whose chose to join WPBA and pay an additional entry fee were eligible to win one of two paid entries to the Open, a $500 value. One of the paid entries was won by Melissa Herndon. There was a tie between Emilyn Callado and Mary Rakin for the second one. There will be a playoff at a later date to see who wins that paid entry. While all this excitement was going on, 24 other players came back Sunday to participate in the Second Chance Tournament, a single elimination, race to 5 contest. The complete list of payouts for both tournaments follows this article. We want to thank our Tour sponsor, Tiger Products, who donated one of their new Hustler line cues to help raise money for the event. Also, Magic Rack, who provides the racks used on the Tour. Many thanks to Chris Swart and Ben Farmer for the $1,000 added by the room and for the hospitality they and their staff provided all weekend. Our next stop will be on June 23 & 24 at South First Billiards in San Jose. Players can join at any stop, spectators are free and always welcome. We will be live streaming selected matches on Sunday, go to our website www.twcwt.com for the link. Our stop in July will be a new one for the Tour—Diamond Billiards in Reno—bringing our total number of stops to seven. We’re very enthusiastic about that and all the exciting pool that we’ll be sure to see this year! Come join us!

STORY

BY: ANDREW MONSTIS

The ShotLucky #17

After the long rest at the ranch, medical news, and the passing of an old friend we head to one of our action spots, Las Vegas. We were driving on our way to Vegas taking the long way as to hit a few spots. It was dusk and we were getting hungry. Driving through Flagstaff, we noticed this place that looked interesting. We had just walked in this lounge called Monte Vista it was open. As we walked in a crowd around the pool table. It was like a scene out of some pool movie……… This guy’s was shooting. The game was in mid-progress. Running it down to the 8 Ball. One guy was wearing a white dress shirt and a tie, His suit jacket on the back of the chair He downs his bourbon, weaves a bit, bends over the table, and awkwardly pokes at the cue ball with his stick, missing an easy shot. Several more locals have come in from the bar and were following the play. The barmaid offers more beverages as soon as the glasses are emptied. On the Jute Box is playing….Maggie Mae by Rod Stewart “make a living a playin’ pool” looking around I thought what timing….. Four balls lay side by side semi clustered on the table. Three stripes and the 8ball cue ball across the table. The 8 ball tucked in the middle he only has a long cross bank available. The shirt and tie guy peers at them, trying to figure his shot, blinking his eyes to stay focused better. Some of the onlookers seem unconvinced he will make it. But the shirt and tie guy pats the corner pocket over confidently, leans over, and throws out his stroke with many, many contortions. The 8 ball banked slowly in. The shirt and tie guy says “I made it, man! I made it! Payday”. He put his hands on his pal’s shoulder and acting a little weak sits into his chair. The guy he was playing paid him what looked like a hundred dollar bill. His Pal” You ought to take up shooting craps. Talk about dumb luck”! The shirt and tie guy “Luck! Whaddya mean, luck?” I tried to make that you don’t give me any credit. His Pal “You know what I mean. You couldn’t make that shot again in a thousand years”. The shirt and tie guy “I couldn’t, Okay. Go ahead. Set ‘them up the way they were.”The way they were! His pal says “Why?” The shirt and tie guy “Go ahead. Set ‘them up the way they were before. Bet ya hundred bucks. I can make that shot just the way I made it before. The pal “Nobody can make that shot and you know it. Not even a lucky drunk. Stunned by his pals statement, the shirt and tie guy leans across the table and placed the balls as they were. They were close but not exact….. We were just standing watching this situation. Lucky whispered to me “this is a classic Hustle” the drunk guy bit….A whole lot of theatrics going on here. The shirt and tie guy ‘How’s that? To the crowd is that the way these balls were before? The guy he was previously playing said “Yeah, that’s about right.” The shirt and tie guy said to his pal C’mon, put it up. Ok I’ll put up a hundred. I’ll take your money. The shirt and tie guy (Hustler) shot and missed it was too hard and his ball fly’s over the side rail. His pal collected from the rail and laughed. The bartender cannot contain his own laughter either. “I can make it” the hustler said over and over. He toss his money on the table, and the shirt and tie guy says again, the shirt and tie guy Set them up again ... C’mon, set them up again. His pal was putting away the cue to the cue rack, “You’re drunk,. I’m not going to bet anymore.” The shirt and tie guy Stares at his pal “What do you mean?” His pal said lets go back to the car. You have to be at work in the morning. You need to sober up. The shirt and tie guy C’mon, You got my nose open now. I have my

money on the table. I make several 10 G’s a month I can afford it all… His pal “I don’t want your money aren’t we friends.” “All right, you want some easy money, huh? Here’s three thousand. That’s one week’s commission. Now you want to take the whole thing, and then you get a crack at your easy money.” Garbled words, He made no sense…sounding drunk…. Many bystanders were enticed to what seemed like easy money and wanted to bet. Many of the patrons were rustling for their wallets, purses and money in their socks. The hustler and his cohort look at each other. They made an eye contact signal. They got the crowd to bite. The rail got to about $600 The balls were set up and the tie guy shot it and made it the crowd went silent and they collected the money… “I was just lucky” now people were skeptical about the whole thing… then Lucky spoke. Lucky dressed in his farmer overall and ‘where’s the beef ’ hat said stepping up “I’d like to make a bet”. The two hustlers were all on it. How much they said. Lucky said “$200 , only I shoot the same shot”. I watched how you did that. I think I could do it…. Ok… Lucky got a cue stick off the rack and rolled it on the table it flopped around so he tried another cue and it was not much better. “Oh well” They set the ball up and Lucky placed the money on the table along with their money. Lucky lined up the shot. The crowd of about 18-20 came back to watch. Lucky shot it just like a little kid and missed it badly. “Sorry old fellow you gave it a try.” Lucky said “I like to try it again”. Shirt and tie guy said you have to bet more money” Lucky said “how much is there in your hand. I mean how much have you won?” and what you have in your pocket too. I like to really bet. Lucky said I have about $10,000 and flashed his back roll. These guys thought they had a stiff. Eyes bugging out at the money rapped in a rubber band. Again they were all over it. We have about $3800 how about we bet that. Ok they hurriedly set up the balls and handed the cue ball to Lucky. I know Lucky he shot the first shot to gauge the table. The crowd now got closer to the table. It may have been the most money they had seen bet before, especially in that place. Lucky peeled off $3800 They had me hold all the $7600. Lucky lined up the cue ball swaggered like he was off balanced as old men sometimes do. A little drama. Took a big breath then sighed shot before all the air was exhaled. He banked that eight ball right in the hole. The crowd cheered Lucky said “I got lucky”. Lucky collected the money and walked over to the bar and said drinks & food are on the house all night. He took their money to pay for this impromptu party. He gave $2500 to the bartender for drinks, etc… and walked over to those others who lost money previously and gave them their money back. The two hustlers leaving one ripped his suit jacket off the chair and scooted out like an Impala running from an African lion… You could see the two quarrelling out the lounge window as they rushed into the car. They were there to hustle and got hustled. These patrons were all singing and dancing. People were mobbing Lucky thanking him. Lucky said round of drinks for everyone keep them coming…. The song on the jute box was “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Lucky was singing it along with the whole place. “Mamma told me… when I was young…. come sit beside me… my only son……..”Simple kind of man”……. It didn’t matter if anyone was in tune but collectively they were pretty good. The place was rockin’ a whole lot a happy people. What a night, all we did was walk into this situation and created a party…… Lucky is great to be with. He tries to avoid the lime light but tonight he was relishing in this one. Good to see him having fun…Especially after the past few weeks?? And the not so good news??.........

Saratoga, Wyoming- Rodney "Rocket" Morris won his second time in Saratoga at this year's 5th Annual Wyoming Open. He went through a talented field of 8-Ball players that included the likes of Charlie Williams, Raj Hundal, Amar Kang, Mark Tadd, Tony Piazza, Marc Vidal, and more. The event was sponsored by Poison Cues by Predator and Asia's

#1 cloth Andy Cloth will be the official

cloth used during the event.

The Wyoming Open drew nearly 150 players from

Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and of course the top pros

which came from England, Florida, and California. There were a total of 5 events

including the opening night Saratoga Open, and the 8-Ball main events with Sportsman, Classic, Masters, and Ladies divisions.

" Almost all the divisions were full, so I'm really ecstatic about that. There will definitely be a 6th Annual Wyoming Open next year. I plan on making the event bigger and better for all the players and divisions. We always want improvements. ", says EJ Glode , promoter of the Wyoming Open.

In the Classic Division which was hosted for intermediate level players, Ronnie Chavez defeated

Chris Wilson in the 64 man field. Jordan Thayer and Chris McCreary rounded out the top 4.

In the Sportsman Division, Eric Burgman won the event over Brian Guice. The Poison Cues Ladies Open

saw Melissa Little go undefeated over Tenille Whitten in the finals.

The Masters Division drew 57 players with several contenders. Defending Champion Charlie "Korean Dragon" Williams took an early loss to Raj Hundal in the second round but managed to come back

and qualify for the final 16 bracket. Raj Hundal only dropped 2 games (to Williams), in his first 3 matches with two 7-0 shut-outs. Rodney Morris cruised through along with road buddy Amar Kang to the winner's bracket finals which Amar won.

In the final 16 rounds, the players were all drawn into a new double elimination bracket. Unknown local Utah talent Ace Brown upsetted Charlie Williams 6-4 in a stellar played match. Raj Hundal dropped his match to Amar "AK-47" Kang but rebounded with a

7-6 decider over Ace Brown. Williams rebounded with back to back wins including a 7-1 over Vidal, a 7-6 revenge match over Hundal, and a 7-6 over Mark Haddad. Leaving the final three players Williams, Morris, and Kang which became known as the Rat Pack, the pro crew of players that traveled to the event together and roomed.

Morris stopped Williams from a Wyoming Open repeat at 7-4 and then defeated Kang 7-6 in the first set of the finals. Forcing a deciding set, Morris came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 7-4 to become the Wyoming Open Champion again.

"EJ does a terrific job promoting pool in the region of the country. I always look forward to coming here to play and help out", said Morris. Rodney is sponsored by Poison Cues made by Predator which he has his own signature line, and managed by Dragon Promotions.

Coincedentally Morris, Kang, Williams, and Hundal all use Predator Poison technology and they represented the top 5 finishers of the event which was sponsored by Predator and Poison Cues.

The pro players will give fans and players an opportunity to learn tomorrow in Wyoming at the Poison Pro Pool School hosted by Duke's Bar & Grill.

The event is majorly supported by the town's own businesses which include : Hotel Wolf, Duke's Bar & Grill, Valley Foods, Riviera Lodge, Carbon County, and Shively Hardware.

For more info or to play in the Wyoming Open contact EJ Glode [email protected] or 307-329-8924.

BTRT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

WINNOWS OUT WINNERS!THE BEHIND THE ROCK TOUR’S FIRST TRI-ANNUAL TOURNAMENT (BTRT) OF THE YEAR CAME TO A CLOSE EARLIER THIS MONTH, AND THE COMPETITION WAS AS FIERCE AS ALWAYS. Held across the nation from Georgia to Texas to Washington, the 211 tournament drew competitors with almost a dozen BTRT weekly tournament competitions under their belt. (Yes, this tournament occurs across the nation each week!) The eventual money winners were seasoned veterans of the tour who brought their “A-Games” to the final round of this scored 10-Ball vs. The Ghost competition. The Tri-Annual Tournament consists of three rounds: Preliminary Round, Sudden Death Round, and the Finals. In the Preliminary Round, each competitor plays two 211 matches to post their best score which is added to their handicap for a net score. The lowest 25% of the net scores are eliminated and the other 75% of the players move on to the Sudden Death Round. In this first round of competition, some players really performed to stay in the competition! Larry Francisco out of Tacoma shot an 82 (just barely eclipsing his prior best of 81) and Pat Pilgrim, also from Tacoma, bested his best with a 44 (former PR was 39). At the end of the Preliminary Round Larry held first position in the Open Division, Pete Gonzales (Tacoma) sat in second, and Deby Welfringer (Tacoma) slid into third with a host of others hot on their tails. In the Intermediate Division, Pat Pilgrim commanded attention in the first spot as the man to beat with Francie Johnson from Golden Fleece out of Lynnwood, WA in second place, and Greg Cole from Cues Billiards, Georgia in third, again with others scrambling behind them to escape the first round hoping to make their mark in the Sudden Death Round. Sudden Death Round separates the players from the money makers! Only the top third of the field moves on. Players must shoot well to escape this round and make it into the Finals. Every shooter gets just one match in the Sudden Death Round to post a score good enough to be in the top third of the field. Players who get past the Sudden Death round are into the money, then it’s a race in the Finals to see who takes the most loot home. The rooms are pretty quiet when this round is in play! A pair of monitors providing live score boards for all the rounds in all the rooms was provided in Tacoma and spectators and players gathered constantly to watch the live boards on both days as the competition matured. All players wondered if their score would be enough. The tension was palpable! In the Sudden Death round, from the Open Division Eric Nickerson out of Cues Billiards in Marietta, GA scared Tacoma’s Malarkeys players with his personal best raw score of 96 (former best of 65!) which put him in the 1st seat out of the Sudden Death Round. Scott Thurston from Tacoma secured 2nd seat by also shooting his personal best of 76 (former PR of 70), and Walter Hawley from Hawley’s Billiards in Dallas, TX took the 3rd seat. Tommy Sliva and Dennis Hostak from Tacoma slid into fourth and fifth places. The First Round winners could not keep up as Francisco, Gonzales,

BTRT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

WALTER HAWLEY 5TH OPEN DIVISION

CINDY PARVALA 1ST INTERNATIONAL DIVISION

and Welfringer lost out at a chance for the finals when they each withered in the heat of the competition! In the Intermediate Division, Pilgrim also faded to be replaced by Cindy Parvala from Texas who won the 1st seat with Greg Cole (GA) in the second seat, both moving to the Final Round on Sunday. Again, the live score feeds kept the interest high in the Tacoma room on Sunday during the Final Round play. Players at Malarkeys hovered around the monitors to see what scores the other players across the nation posted while playing their matches and watched the live in-room scoreboards as participants played their matches. After the first round of two Finals matches, every player knew they had to perform their best to make the weekend worth their while. It was tense! At the end, each of the top three players in the Open Division posted personal records to take home the top prizes: Scott Thurston from Tacoma shot an 83 bettering his prior best of 76 to take first place worth $374. Tommy Sliva out of Malarkeys in Tacoma WA shot a 94 to beat his best ever by 2 for second place ($183), and Dennis Hostak, also from Tacoma, shot a 75 to beat his best ever by one to win third ($119). Eric Nickerson and Walter Hawley filled out the winners round for fourth and fifth places. In the Intermediate Division, it was Cindy Parvala from Texas edging out Greg Cole out of Georgia for first place. All of the rooms added money to the tournament payout along with the BTRT contribution. The added money totaled $550 from the tour and hosting locations. Thanks to Hawley’s Billiards out of Dallas TX, Malarkeys Pool & Brew in Tacoma WA and Cues Billiards

in Marietta GA for participating! The 211 competition is a weekly tournament across the nation that uses a player’s raw score in a scored pool game of 10-Ball versus The Ghost. After just 6 matches, players receive a handicap and play in either the Open or Intermediate Divisions. As in any handicapped scoring system, a player’s raw score added to a handicap allows competition on a level playing field for all players. The Behind The Rock Tour is the ONLY tournament that can be played anywhere in the USA from remote locations. They also pay weekly! BTRT uses a numerical scoring system allowing players to compete at the same time and uses a 90% handicapped scoring system not offered by any other tour or league. For players who like statistics and want to see their game improve, this is the tournament for you! If you’d like to view some of the live stream matches from Malarkeys to see how the game is played, go to stream.tv/channel/btrt. If you are interested in joining the tour, contact us! This tour is perfect for players with growing skills and interest in the game, so come join us. More players means bigger payouts! Henderson, NV. - April 4, 2012 - CueSports International (CSI) is proud to announce the sanctioning of Pool300 by the BCA Pool League (BCAPL), starting June 1, 2012. CSI and Pool300 have reached a long term agreement to sanction all Pool300 players with BCA Pool League. “CSI is proud to be affiliated with Pool300. We are very excited about Pool300 sending 50% of all local teams to our BCAPL National Championships at the Rio Hotel & Casino Las Vegas in July 2013. This is the highest percentage that any league has ever tried to send to nationals. It allows more players to participate in The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World and reinforces the CSI mission: More Choices for All Players,” stated Mark Griffin, CEO of CueSports International. From a recent Pool300 press release:“Most competing Pool Leagues either don’t offer a paid trip to their National Championship or reward a very small percentage of their teams, usually 5% or less. Pool300 will reward 50% of the teams in each league with a trip that includes roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, and entry fee into the tournament. “In POOL300, clearing the table in order without missing gets the shooter a strike. Clearing the table with one miss is a spare. POOL300 is 100% offense. When it’s your turn, you’re shooting for yourself, not directly against another player. Players are handicapped in the same way as bowling so beginners can compete against accomplished

players and still have a chance to win. “For complete details go to http://www.pool300.com or to get a league started contact Scott Willoughby at 855-TRY-POOL300.” For more information about the BCAPL National Championships visit www.playbca.com. CueSports International (CSI) is dedicated to creating more choices for all players. In the past seven years CSI has directly paid out approximately Seven Million Dollars to players. CSI is the parent company of the BCA Pool League and the USA Pool League. CSI also produces independent events such as the US Bar Table Championships, the Jay Swanson Memorial, the US Open One Pocket Championship and the US Open 10-Ball Championship. Visit www.playcsipool.com, www.playbca.com and www.playusapool.com for more information about CSI and its divisions. CSI leads the billiard industry in the development of technology. Diablo Valley Pool League

DVPL brought yet another women’s session to successful completion last April 25th as they had their “end of the league event” and “pay out to all teams”. The evening started at Scores Bar, since they sponsored the newly crowned champion Jesse’s Mix. Congratulations to this group of women, all veterans of the game who right now are totally committed to bringing their game to a higher level by participating on the many events offered. The core of this team is fully involved in men’s league, scotch doubles, single 9 ball and Tiger 9 Ball Tour. This team was able to break up the dominance of previous champions and excellent group of shooters from Secret Sauce Junior Mints and Motley Cues who for the last sessions were the ones finishing up on top 3 positions.

Cony Mendoza’s game continues to become more solid while her defense is yet her strongest skill, Kacie’s control of the cue ball and

excellent accuracy makes her game tough, and Jesse’s highly improved stroke and now mastering her jump shots, made this team a tough one to beat. Their 3 alternates Josie, Karina and Torri complemented them and helped them achieve the maximum goal. They held the top 1st spot for 89% of the season from October 2011 to April 2012. Karina was able to take advantage of the opportunity provided and contributed with many rounds. This league ran from September 28th to April 25th, for a total of 27 weeks of play. We had 13 teams participate in the double elimination format with a template of 14 teams and 8 sponsors.Last years champions, Secret Sauce from the Office Bar had a slow start but at the end won enough rounds to get close to Jess mix, they however fell short on a key match against Carmen’s team from Vinnie’s Bar and were able to only take 1.5 rounds which at the end would represent a key match to set up for position round and final standings. They definitely made their return felt by all the teams. Secret Sauce locked 2nd Place prior to Position Round which left two former champion teams, Montley Cues lead by Jenny McCary, from Cue N Brew and Jr. Mints from Vinnies lead by Erin Mckibben in a tight battle for 3rd place.Leslie Bernardi claimed Top Shooter again this season for a prize of $100, but we had a new recipient for Most Improved. Sally Harvey who is a veteran of pool and DVPL started the season shooting with fierce concentration and accuracy; she also finished the season with the same great shooting skills and focus. Her average improved from last season by 1.17.

Our women’s league has become very competitive. This group of women have participated year after year and continue to show the love for the competition at all levels. The handicap system of 135% allows all players to have a chance to the pot as well as it forces the more skilled players to shoot their best.Let us take a moment to again thank all our sponsors that made this league a successful one by supporting the teams. They are Scores Bar, Vinnie’s Bar, Diablo Lanes, Rack em up, CJ’s lounge, Farrington’s Bar, The Office Lounge. Thank you to all of those who help us with the smooth running of the league, you all know who you are, and of course thank you to all the women who keep participating and excelling in their games bringing our level to a higher level.Good luck to all the teams traveling to Las Vegas National 8-Ball championship this coming May to represent us as well to the many players joining in the 9 ball competition with Tiger West Coast 9 ball Tour.1st $1730 Jess Team, Scores + $600 Vegas Jess Quinata (Captain), Karina Aragon, Kacie Ragen, Cony Mendoza, (Missing: Josie Baraquil & Torri Connelly)2nd $1460 Secret Sauce, The Office, + $400 Vegas Jolene Akin, Gloria Cheng, El Callado, Salene Castaneda, Denise Domingo (Captain) & Dar Domingo3rd $1230 Montley Cues, Cue N Brew, + 300 Vegas Diane Friedman, Brenda Clark, Darla Decker, Dez Valdez & Jenny McCary (Captain)4th $1040 Jr Mints, Vinnies, + 200 Vegas5th $865 The Outsiders, Vinnies6th $720 It Is What It Is, The Office7th $595 Sharp Shooting Divas, Diablo Lanes8th $490 Farringtons, Kristin9th $405 Four Cues, Farringtons10th $325 Your Average Killers, Farringtons11th $260 The Shaft, CJ’s12th $195 Scores, Kim13th $165 Still Standing, Diablo LanesTop Shooter $100 LESLIE BERNARDIMost Improved: SALLY HARVEYFor the end of league tourney 8 teams showed up to participate on a single elimination Vegas style event. Product Review

PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONTiger Hustler Series Cue (TH-2)This HUSTLER cue features Sneaky Pete design in Bacote, fully spliced into a light color Canadian Hard Rock Maple forearm and accented with black, natural and black point trims. Thin black phenolic ring complements the butt cap and wood to wood joint creates solid one piece cue look. Each cue features the Ultra-X® high performance patented technology shaft (low deflection shafts are optional) and a radial Tiger joint protector.

MSRP $409

I wanted to try out the new HUSTLER cue by Tiger Products and asked Tony to send one to me for evaluation. He sent the TH-2. It has a Sneaky Pete design, which I really like. I was struck by the feel of the stick when it hit the cue ball. The Sniper laminated cue tip which comes standard provided the perfect hit.

Tiger’s patented cue design is unlike any other and you really want to try this cue out. It features the Ultra-X® high performance shaft that Tiger is known for and that plays so well.

Visit the Tiger Booth (23-24) at the BCAPL National 8 Ball Championships in Las Vegas in May. Tell Tony that “The Break” sent you by to test out the cue. I recommend it.
