Message to MembersDear Chamber Members:

While we hope our gratitude is evident year-around, we recognize that the holiday season is a traditional time of offering thanks and appreciation for the many blessings of the last year. As The Chamber’s President/CEO, I am blessed every day by so many things.

I offer my gratitude first to the staff of 14 incredibly talented, organized men and women who do such a wonderful job of serving you, our members, and moving our organization forward. I find it a blessing to work alongside these individuals on a daily basis, and I can testify that their dedication and commitment is what makes The Chamber so successful.

The 16 individuals who serve on our Board of Directors also deserve my thanks. These business leaders take time out of their busy schedules to champion our efforts and support our events and programs.

We have so many volunteers that I am overwhelmed with gratitude when I think of all that they do and accomplish in a given year. The individuals who serve on our eight committees have earned my respect and appreciation, and I know we couldn’t accomplish everything that we do without them.

Finally, I thank you, the more than 2,100 member businesses employing 94,000 people in our community. You serve as our daily inspiration for going above and beyond in our work to continue serving you in a way that brings you growth and success.

I wish all of you a safe and blessed holiday season, and I thank you, sincerely, for your membership.

Terry Bradshaw Entertains Historic Voices of Vision Audience

In his signature gregarious style, Terry Bradshaw delighted an audience of more than 1,000 people with anecdotes, wisdom and more than a few jokes during The Chamber’s fifth annual Voices of Vision event.

“We’re always measured by how well we handle the bad things,” Bradshaw explained, talking about his early days as the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He noted several times that being in a huddle is like being in a place of business, and he had three principles for success in both realms.

“You want to be successful in business? Learn how to smile. We all have to work on caring about others,” Bradshaw said. “And we have to spend quality time getting to know the people around us.”

The crowd was the largest Voices of Vision has drawn in its five years of existence; it was also the largest event hosted by the Ramada Plaza & Suites and Conference Center.

Bradshaw kept the audience entertained with stories from his playing days as well as experiences he has had since retiring from football in 1983. But Bradshaw wasn’t afraid to get serious every now and then.

“We will never accomplish anything without needing to thank someone,” he explained.

As his address came to a close, Bradshaw offered some honesty.

“Even if I could stand up here and wish you happiness, I wouldn’t do it,” he said. “Because happiness ebbs and flows... But joy - joy is rooted deeply in your spirit...Joy will sustain you.”

The audience was prompted to suggest ideas for the 2015 Voices of Vision speaker, with nearly 40 individuals noted. Some of the suggestions include Arianna Huffington, Mark Cuban, Donald Trump and John Maxwell. Search #VOV14 to see all the suggestions as well as other tweets from the event. You can also see additional photos from the event on our Flickr account.

Past Voices of Vision speakers included Oliver North, Bob Woodward, Joe Theismann and Jeb Bush.

Tax ExtendersJoining chambers from across the United States, The Chamber has urged Congress to extend expired and expiring tax provisions critically important to U.S. jobs and the broader economy. Set to expire in the Lame Duck session include credits for maintaining railroads, employer wage credits for active military reservists, premiums for mortgage insurance deductions, deductions for state and local general sales, deductions for qualified tuition expenses and others. The Chamber urged members of Congress to work together to extend seamlessly, enhance, or make permanent important tax provisions to this year to provide a necessary bridge to comprehensive tax reform.

Candidate Cracker-BarrelThe Chamber extends a huge thank you to the 42 candidates who made the Chamber’s second Candidate Cracker-Barrel the best yet. Candidate’s spent 90 minutes meeting with dozens of Chamber members in small groups talking about issues important to our various economic sectors. From education to transportation to needs unique to Cass and Clay Counties, the fervent discussions were personal, informal and meaningful. As defined by its name, the cracker-barrel is intended to be reminiscent of an old fashioned, habitual discussion among friends, and it certainly felt that way.

Here’s what a few participants had to say:“Good job with the Cracker-Barrel yesterday! I thought everything was perfect, and it was fun, too! Thanks for organizing the event.”

Connie L. Nelson Grant Writer/Manager, Fargo Public Schools – District #1

Advocacy in ActionNew Minnesota Initiatives

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has launched three new initiatives that offer assistance to help small businesses expand or improve their operations.

1. Greater Minnesota Job Expansion ProgramUnder this new program, businesses in Greater Minnesota will receive sales tax refunds on all purchases made during a seven-year period. To qualify, a participating business must have operated in Greater Minnesota for at least one year and must commit to expanding its workforce at a single facility. The business must increase full time employment at the facility by two employees or 10 percent of current employment, within three years. Deed will determine the size of the sales tax refund that each business will receive, up to $2 million annually and $10 million over seven years, based in part on employment and capital investments.

2. Innovation Voucher Pilot ProgramThis pilot program provides up to $25,000 to help small businesses pay for technical assistance and services from public higher education institutions and nonprofit entities. Qualifying companies will receive vouchers which can be redeemed for technical assistance and services that include research, technical development, product development, commercialization, marker development, technology exploration and improved business practices. Companies with 40 or fewer employees, with at least half of the employees based in Minnesota may apply.

3. Job Training Incentive Pilot ProgramThe program, an outgrowth of DEED’s Minnesota Job Skills Partnership, provides grants of up to $50,000 to new or expanding Minnesota businesses that need to train new workers as quickly and efficiently as possible. The program is available to businesses that have fewer than 150 full-time employees and are increasing their Minnesota workforce by at least 10 percent, with a minimum of five new jobs.

Board of Directors Approved 2015 Public

Policy Guide The Public Affairs committee delivered the 2015 Public Policy Guide to the Board of Directors for approval in setting the policy priorities for the Chamber in the upcoming year. The annual guide is a collaborative effort that brings together stakeholders from a cross-section of our membership. A few highlights of the 2015 guide include an emphasis on moving statewide infrastructure projects forward, addressing workforce needs

through a variety of facets, seizing opportunities to reduce or eliminate corporate and personal income tax, investments in entrepreneurism and innovation and continued support of permanent flood protection. The Board unanimously approves the publication.

Leadership Fargo Moorhead West FargoLeadership Class Learns the Importance

of Innovation in the WorkplaceThe Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class spent its November session at the Fargo Jet Center learning about driving innovation in the workplace and the importance of understanding communication styles.

Eric Piela of Flint Communications, Inc., Casey Steele of Square One Kitchens, Mike Dragosavich of Spotlight Media and Dean Atchison of Spectrum Aeromed started our day off by sharing their own experiences of innovation in the workplace and entrepreneurship. The class discovered that many of the traits one needs to be a successful entrepreneur — tenacity, passion, vision and flexibility — are also traits one needs to be a successful leader. Piela’s presentation said it all: they learned how to be entrepreneurs…without being actual entrepreneurs.

The class also learned about communication styles from Dawn Kaiser, The Village Business Institute. Studies have shown that each individual has a preferred mode of communication and that as a leader, one must be able to flex their style to connect with followers. Kaiser guided the class through the session to assess personal styles and then worked together to identify ways to be flexible in order to open up the communication channels and gain understanding with those being led.

The day ended with a tour of Drekker Brewing Company, Fargo’s newest brewery, to learn about their entrepreneurial story and how they’re developing an engaging, positive and downright fun workplace culture. The class even got to partake in their ribbon-cutting ceremony to help The Chamber’s Member Relations Ambassadors welcome Drekker to the organization.

It’s for you. It’s for your people. It’s for your business.

You believe a thriving organization is only as strong as its people. You’re right. But you can’t flex those muscles without the right training, tools and time. Even the strongest among us need maintenance and motivation to keep us at the top. Member ProfileIntegreon Focuses on Efficiency While Providing Positive Workplace Culture

For more than 13 years, Integreon has been providing some of the largest corporations and most prestigious law firms throughout the world the administrative services they require to operate more efficiently and successfully. And they’ve done it while modestly flying under the radar, until the company was named The Chamber’s 2014 ChamberChoice Business of the Year.

Julie Laufenberg, general manager, explained that much of what the company does is considered outsourcing, but that’s not as scary of a term as some might think. “We work with a variety of law firms that require administrative and document services as well as investment bank and large corporations,” she explained.

Integreon, which has 12 delivery centers that employ 2,200 associates on four continents, includes four business units that each have a specific focus:

§ Legal Services – includes document review, forensic consulting, image extraction, eDiscovery, etc. § Business Services – includes, procurement services, employee relations, talent management, CRM, etc. § Document Services – includes archiving, corrupt document repair, indexing, PowerPoint creation, translation, etc. § Research Services – includes business development research support, equity research, brand tracking, social media analysis, etc.

Fargo’s delivery center is split between document services, which accounts for 80 percent of the work, and legal services for the remaining 20 percent. Approximately 340 associates work in the Fargo delivery center, the company’s only 24/7 service provider. As such, the company has assembled a severe weather action team of employees who have signed up to stay at the office to ensure work is completed on time, Laufenberg said. Employees receive a kit that includes bedding and supplies necessary to allow the employee to stay in the building until the weather event has ended.

That commitment to the work stems from a culture that embraces a philanthropic mindset. Integreon has programs in place to offer employees the opportunity to give back to their community, wherever they are and in whatever way they believe is most beneficial; the company also supports efforts like International Children’s Day, International Women’s Day and International Men’s Day.

Recognizing local connections is important to the company. For example, in Fargo, Integreon has assembled client gifts using locally made products and the new delivery center will feature the work of local artists through CHARISM, a local nonprofit that uses a neighborhood-based approach to improve the community as a whole.

The new delivery center, which was completed last month, provides 330 workstations to accommodate 700 associates who work across the three shifts. In addition, the facility will offer a training center, modern café and patio area with access to green space. Employees began moving to the new office, located at 3247 47th Street South in Fargo, at the beginning of the month, and the plan is for all employees to be in the new space by the end of January.

An important aspect of the new office is not just how employees will be organized — by client — but how comfortable employees will be in their new space. All employees, no matter position or title, will have a cubicle, and huddle rooms that will be available for private meetings that feature large glass windows to maintain the open layout. In addition, a variety of workstations will be available—from the traditional desk to walking stations to height-adjustable desks, Laufenberg said. Samples of the materials and set-ups and mock-ups of the spaces offered employees a glimpse into the new space before it was even completed.

Member ProfileEmbracing Global Markets: Spectrum

Aeromed Maybe you’ve never heard of Specrtum Aeromed. Maybe you heard about them for the first time when they were in the news with the Ebola coverage. Maybe your first encounter was when the company won ChamberChoice Small Business of the Year. No matter how you learned about the company, Spectrum Aeromed is a local business making huge global strides.

Spectrum was founded in 1991 in Wheaton, Minnesota. Current President and CEO Dean Atchison bought the company in 2007. In 2008 he moved operations to Fargo, enabling the company to have nearby airport access, a larger talent pool to recruit from and more abundant resources. The move, along with Atchison’s leadership, proved to be exactly what the struggling company needed to become the highly successful global company it is today.

Spectrum designs, manufactures and sells medical equipment that converts aircraft into air-born ambulances. Each system they create is specifically tailored for each client. In a highly specialized niche market like air ambulance equipment, Spectrum works closely with customers to develop new products that will meet their specific needs. “We offer a full turn-key solution,” said Chad Kost, chief operating officer. “It’s highly customizable.”

Besides selling in a highly niche market, Spectrum has the added challenge of selling in a global market. “One of our biggest challenges is finding the potential market,” said Tammy Enright, SVP — business manager. “It’s such a unique market,” said Kost. “We look to 2015 and beyond to determine the scope and size of our market.”

When working in global markets, research is vital. “Make sure you have a clear understanding of the government you are dealing with,” Kost said. “If there is uncertainty, make sure you seek out professional services.” Kost recommended U.S. Commercial Services, the North Dakota Trade Office and the Export-Import Bank of the United States when dealing with crediting and financing. “You have to make sure you are getting paid.”

Being a successful global company takes more than just global knowledge. Spectrum has made its name by being a leader in customer service. The company prides itself on developing more than just a product, the company delivers a customized solution. In some instances, a customer may not even know what they need to achieve their goals. In those cases, the team at Spectrum works with the cusotmer to develop solutions to fit specific needs. It’s that type of next level customer service along with exceptional quality that has made Spectrum Aeromed a notable name in the with air ambulance industry worldwide.

We Arenʼt the Only Ones to NoticeSpectrum was named to Inc. Magazine’s 500/5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in the United States in 2011, 2012 and 2013. In 2014, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce honored the company with the DREAM

BIG Small Business of the Year Blue Ribbon Award.

Fargo Public School Boundary Changes Effective Fall 2015In June 2014, the Fargo Board of Education approved boundary changes for Fargo Public Schools’ elementary schools effective in the fall of 2015. These changes set an attendance area for the newly constructed Ed Clapp Elementary School and allow for future enrollment growth at elementary schools as the city of Fargo grows southward.

Schools affected by the new attendance boundaries are: Bennett, Centennial, Kennedy, Lewis & Clark and Lincoln Elementary Schools.

FPS boundary maps and resources are available online at www.fargo.k12.nd.us/boundarymaps, including a look-up tool to determine which school your address is assigned.

Any middle and high school boundary adjustments were postponed until the Board has developed the school district’s next long range strategic plan.

It really doesn’t matter how big or small your office is. Our process is the same and we get things done.

Maybe you’re a startup legal office with three employees and a low volume photo copier, or a national corporation that needs a fleet of high volume devices. Perfect. We can outfit you with a fleet of high volume multifunction devices that can print, scan, copy, fax, staple, collate, fold, brew coffee and make sales calls. Well, maybe not those last two, but you get the idea.

When it comes to copiers and printers, we know what to do and we do it well.
