I hope that you have been able to take advantage of the opportunity for recollection, a quieter pace and closer spiritual union with Christ The Lord, and for time with family. We are called to bear witness to the love of God in Christ towards neighbour also in the current circumstances. One possible way might be to look out for and reach out to people who may be living alone, especially the elderly and the vulnerable. Perhaps they can be contacted by phone or a note left in their letter box to check if they are safe and if they need assistance - for example, with necessary provisions. All this can be done observing the necessary distancing and other precautions. A number of people in the parish have offered to make themselves available to assist if we receive calls for assistance at the parish office. Please let us know, and we will pass on details. Please bear in mind, though, that the parish will now be having to operate without weekend cash collections, which means a significant shortfall of around $10,000 a month. FROM THE LONDON (BROMPTON) ORATORY Father Wilfrid Faber (1814-1863) was the founder, under Newman, of the London Oratory. Faber and a small group of Newman's disciples came from Birmingham to London in 1849. They began their community in premises variously described as a whisky-store, a gin-shop, a dance-hall, in King William Street (now William IV Street) just off the Strand. After three years there, a better property was found in a small village called Brompton, on the outskirts of London. The present Oratory house was built first. The present church was consecrated on the 16thApril 1884. Faber the preacher, Faber the hymn-writer, Faber the spiritual author, must all give way to Faber the founder and first Provost of the London Oratory. Father Faber became an influential figure in the London of his day. His enthusiastic and, some might say, faintly flamboyant personality might lend itself to unsympathetic treatment by those who do not understand him, and by those who do not read his books. In the words of his early biographer, Fr. John Bowden, Faber's life was "from first to last religious". His character was not something fixed or static. Faber's early religious training may have had a Calvinistic bias, but all his Catholicism was drawn from Italian sources. He felt naturally at home with the Italian temperament, and might perhaps have lived happily in Italy were it not for his burning zeal to save souls in England. The spiritual depths of this great servant of God may be glimpsed in his "Notes on Community Life in the Oratory". In 1849, Faber wrote of his vocation to the Oratory as follows: "Why did I come here? Not to spend a lazy life, not to have pleasant companions, congenial duties, or a home without temptations. All these things I turned my back upon, when I turned my back upon the world. I came here that I might love God fervently, and nothing but God - to rehearse now what I hope will be my blessed occupation in heaven for all eternity - to learn to mortify myself by continual mortifications and incessant prayer - to sanctify myself first of all, and then to try and save souls for Jesus.

PALM SUNDAY

Take a green branch from your garden. Gather the family together and,

with each person holding a branch, pray together.

FAMILY PRAYER

All In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Leader: During Lent, we have been preparing our hearts to celebrate Easter. Today we join Christ as he enters Jerusalem. In the coming days, we will relive the mystery of his death and resurrection. By joining ourselves to Christ, God’s grace will lift us up and rescue us.

Reader: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

When they were near Jerusalem, the disciples brought a donkey to Jesus and laid their clothes on its back. Jesus sat on the donkey. A great crowd spread their clothes on the road, while others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in his path. The crowds who went in front of him and those who were following were crying out: Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna

in the highest. And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil as people asked, ‘Who is this?’ and the crowds answered, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.’

The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

HOLY WEEK AT HOME

Spend a few minutes in silence to think about the Gospel. Then talk together about what Jesus will do in Jerusalem in the coming days. What will happen on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday?

Leader: Let us pray.

All: Lord, increase the faith of your people

and listen to our prayers.

Today we honour Christ our triumphant king

by carrying these branches.

May we honour you every day

by living always in him,

for he is Lord for ever and ever. Amen.

Make your own prayers for those who are sick or in need. Ask God to protect them. Finish each prayer with:

Lord, hear us.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Let us pray in the words Jesus himself gave us:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Leader: May God bless us and keep us safe.

All In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Place your palm branch beside your bed during the days of Holy Week.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a devotional practice whereby we exercise the mind and heart in desiring to receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist, either as a preparation for participation in the Mass, or when it is not possible to receive Holy Communion. Since Christ himself is the ultimate goal of every human desire, the value of a well made spiritual communion is very great. "When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed upon you." (St Teresa of Avila, the Way of Perfection, Ch35). St John Vianney taught that making a spiritual communion has an effect like that of blowing on embers to make them flame up again, so the love of God flames up in the heart by means of the spiritual communion. The most generally known form is that of St Alphonsus de Liguori:

"My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please enter spiritually into my soul. I welcome you, I love and adore You, never permit me to be separated from You. Amen."

WE PRAY FOR:-Those who are recently deceased:

Those who are sick: Ksenia BORODIN, Rex BOWEN, Verna BOWEN, Clare CLARK, Duncan CARSTENS, Ruth Mary DALY, Sylvia DE LUCA, Shannon EMSLIE, Mark FARRAH, Jane FARRELL, Maria FARRELL, Bryan FITZPATRICK, Joan FLEW, Anne FRANETTOVICH, Gwen GAIR, Gloria GARR, Bronte GREER, Marlene JOHNSTON, Tony LEVICK, Ben McFADDEN

lists above or to remove someone who is now well.

ACT OF PERFECT CONTRITION

Through an act of Perfect Contrition you can receive the forgiveness of your sins outside of confession, even mortal sins, provided that you determine yourself

to correct your life and make a firm resolution to go to sacramental confession as soon as you can, when it becomes possible. Remember, these are extraordinary measures only, for times when a priest is truly not available to you.

Perfect Contrition is sorrow and detestation of sin arising out of the love of God. One way of exciting this contrition in our hearts is by considering the passion of Jesus Christ and making acts of love for Him. We can also think of the infinite love which God has for

us, and express sorrow in our heart in the presence of this great love which we have offended.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for all the sins of my life simply because by them I have offended You and Your infinite love. I desire never to offend You again. Grant that my soul my enter into Your grace, and remain united to You forever. Amen.

Palm Sunday, Year A, 4th/5th April, 2020

MASS READINGS

First Reading: Isaiah 50: 4-7 The Lord has given me a disciples tongue. So that I may know how to reply to the wearied, he provides me with speech. Each morning he wakes me to hear, to listen like a disciple. The Lord has opened my ear. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard; I did not cover my face against insult and spittle. The Lord comes to my help, so that I am untouched by the insults. So, too, I set my face like flint; I know I shall not be shamed.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 21

(Said by all)

All who see me deride me. They curl their lips, they toss their heads. ‘He trusted in the Lord, let him save him: Let him release him if this is his friend.’

Many dogs have surrounded me, A band of the wicked beset me. They tear holes in my hands and my feet, I can count every one of my bones.

They divide my clothing among them. They cast lots for my robe. O Lord, do not leave me alone, My strength, make haste to help me!

I will tell of your name to my brethren And praise you where they are assembled. ‘You who fear the Lord give him praise; All sons of Jacob, give him glory. Revere him, Israel’s sons. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 His state was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave, and became as men are; and being as all men are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. But God raised him high and gave him the name which is above all other names so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation:

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! Christ became obedient for us even to death, dying on the cross. Therefore God raised him on high and gave him a name above all other names. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory!

Gospel: Matthew 21: 1-11

When they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tied, and a colt with her; unties them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, “The Lord has need of them,” and he will send them immediately’. This took place to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

‘Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king is coming to you, Humble and mounted on an ass, And on a colt, the foal of an ass.’

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the ass and the colt, and put their garments on them, and he sat thereon. Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him shouted,

‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!’

And when he entered Jerusalem all the city was stirred, saying, ’Who is this?’ And the crowds said, ’This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee.’

The Gospel of the Lord

Response: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew is as follows:

Matthew 26:14—27:66

Memorial Acclamation: Number One

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.
