From the Parish Priest Work is continuing on Mary Immaculate
Church. Thankfully, we were able to get back in the church so quickly thanks to everyone’s hard work, and we can now work around the ongoing things that need to be done. We’re immensely grateful that the roof contractors have begun re-tiling the broken roof. On Monday we began removal of the carpets due to the glass they had been sprayed with, and the foul and muddy water that sections had been soaked in. The water coming through the roof had washed into the church decades of grime from the ceiling boards. The wooden steps that had been added to the sanctuary also had to be removed as the chipboard had begun decaying after becoming water logged. The rest of the carpets will be removed in due course.
We can now see (again) the beautiful marble and tile sanctuary floor. I think most would agree that it would be a real shame to cover it up again, and so we have begun getting quotes to have it cleaned and polished. It’s in very good condition, all things considered, and will look great once its cleaned. It’s a real testament to parishioners of earlier years that they have left us something so beautiful.
The insurance money will, hopefully, cover us for most of the repairs to the church, to fix everything that was damaged in the storm. We do also have an opportunity, right now, whilst we are experiencing this inconvenience, to repair and further enhance the beauty of this “house of God” of which we are currently the stewards. We ourselves have an opportunity now to contribute to what we will leave behind for future generations.
This weekend, we are therefore launching the opportunity to allow anyone who wishes to contribute financially to the repair and restoration of Mary Immaculate Church to do so. You will find special envelopes to do this. We are also launching,
slightly early, our 2015 Art Union, the proceeds of which will be directed to the work on Mary Immaculate Church. We guarantee that all contributions given to this special appeal will only be used for Mary Immaculate Church. We are grateful for any gifts, large or small. We are also planning a fundraising social evening - stay tuned for details.
If any of the benefactors who helped pay for the lead-light windows on the south side of Mary Immaculate Church are still around, I’d be most grateful if you could make contact with me.
Ministers of the Word, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and Altar Servers are invited to register for your ministries for the Christmas Masses on the sheets at the back of the church. Many thanks.
This week will see the final 7:00pm Monday Mass until February.
This Thursday will also be the final all-night vigil of Eucharistic Exposition and Adoration at Saint Elizabeth’s. Thank you to all who have kept watch with Our Lord since we began this earlier in the year. Exposition and Adoration at Saint Elizabeth’s will resume on Thursday 12th February, 2015.
In the Catholic Leader this weekend is a nice article about the recent release of the third in a series of books for children preparing for the sacraments, authored by our Sacramental Co-ordinator, Selina Venier (see snippet inside). Well done, Selina!
In the first part of 2015 we will have a renewal of membership of both the Parish Pastoral Council and the Parish Finance Council. If you are interested in serving on either Council, or would like to nominate someone else you think has the interest and expertise to so serve, please complete one of the forms you will find at the back of the church.

Real Presence of Jesus Certainly Worth Communicating
The Catholic Leader columnist, catechist and Sacramental Co-ordinator at Annerley Ekibin Parish, Selina Venier, has written her third children’s book, Invisible Presence, to help all children and particularly those preparing for the sacrament of First Holy Communion, understand the supreme gift of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Church and in the Eucharist.
Fr Paul Chandler commends Ms Venier’s books “so that children may understand the wonder and mystery of the sacraments.”
“To help children to be well prepared for these moments of intense encounter with Christ is the high point in the role of parents and other
Selina with daughters Gabriella and Alessia educators in the faith”, he said. (With thanks to The Catholic Leader). Warmest congratulations to Selina on this most recent achievement from Annerley Ekibin Parish.
For more information about this book and others visit: www.vineyardofthelord.com.au.
“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others.
Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?” Bob Hope
