Singer, Burr
(Bernice)"Loading on the Levee" (1938)
Work/paper
Drawing, Charcoal 5/16/2011
Singer (1912-1992) was born in St. Louis, but
moved to Los Angeles in 1939.She also studied at
the Art Student's League and worked in Taos.
She became a popular and very well-known water-
colorist in S. Calif. Selected as part of the Missouri
collection for the New York World's Fair of 1939
and included in theArtists for Victory Exhibition at
the N.Y. Metro. Art Museum in 1942. Much of her
early work depicted African-American imagery, and
the plight of the African -American community, and
(perhaps for this reason) she is sometimes referred
to as an African -American artist. Sources that B.
Feldacker contacted (see research material) who
knew Singer or were close to her confirmed that
this was erroneous. Note: this drawing appears to
be a study for a painting of basically the same
waterfront scene done the same year. Ivey-Selkirk
Auction House confirmed that the drawing was on
consignment from an L.A. gallery which may have
represented Burr's estate. It is possible she
retained this drawing from St. Louis when she
moved west.

Louis Post Office on Market St. in 1942, depicting
the History of Missouri. This project bid price was
the largest commission paid by the Treasury
Section of Fine Arts for a post office mural. Siporin
went on to become the first Chair of the Fine Arts
Department at Brandeis University.
