Dow employee to windsurf Channel in aid of cancer researchEuropean marketing director for STYROFOAM™ manufacturer Dow Building Solutions, Marco ten Bruggencate, willbe hoping for better weather this September as he attempts to windsurf across the English Channel.Marco plans to set off from Folkestoneon the weekend of September 15/16thas soon as winds allow, and is aiming toland near Wimereux in France aroundfour hours later. The ambitious journey has its roots inMarco’s own battle against testicularcancer and is in aid of a charity calledKiKa, which funds research intochildren’s cancer. Marco was initiallydiagnosed with the disease back in 2000.“It feels like the right time to givesomething back,” he said. “No one, andespecially not a child, should have to diefrom cancer and I know from my ownexperience the impact the disease hasnot just on the individual concerned butfamily and friends.”

Marco’s original diagnosis meant he hadto have an urgent operation at Kent’sMedway hospital to have the tumoursurgically removed. The cancerunfortunately returned, leading to acourse of chemotherapy and two followup operations. His last check-up inAugust 2011 finally showed him to becancer-free.“It’s been a tough, long battle and I’vebeen lucky to win against cancer – butthe sad fact is that although treatmentshave improved since the 1960s when thecure rate was around 30%, one in fourchildren diagnosed with cancer will stilllose their fight,” explained Marco.

Presented by Sadolin TechnicalConsultant Sean Thompson, this is thesixth in the ‘This Is Sadolin’ series ofseven videos, all produced to givepainting and decorating professionals awide-insight into current woodcaretopics . Sean said: “Whether the cladding ismade of hardwood, softwood ormodified timber, an appropriatemaintenance and redecorationschedule is the key to maximising itsperformance in all weathers andretaining the natural attractiveappearance of the wood over the longterm.“The video starts by looking at thesolvent borne woodcare range andreveals the versatility of Sadolin Classic, one of the most well established

products in the Sadolin portfolio. “Used alone it delivers colour and a flatmatt finish to wood, allowing thenatural grain to show through, with upto four years’ weather protection. Usedas basecoat with two coats of SadolinExtra or with Sadolin Clearcoat, thetranslucency can be maintained and ahigher sheen finish can be achievedwhilst the redecoration schedule isextended further still.“The video then looks at Sadolin’swater borne range, starting with QuickDrying Woodstain, which will provideup to six years’ of protection. Because ithas such a rapid drying time it can beused even when there’s a threat of rainin the air. “When quick and easy maintenance isa priority, Sadolin Advanced Onecoat

offers an ideal solution – a single coat isall that is required. This woodstaindelivers a translucent finish and long-lasting colour, and can also disguiseimperfections and flaws in thesubstrates. “Completing the line-up of Sadolinproducts suitable for use on claddingare two very different types ofwoodcare system. For a rich opaquefinish that will flex with wood and resistpeeling and flaking, no matter howextreme the weather conditions andfluctuations in temperature, SadolinSuperdec is an alternative to traditionalgloss paint that will give up to eightyears’ protection. “Finally, at the other end of thespectrum is the Sadolin Ultra HighlyTranslucent Woodstain system which

shows off all the natural beauty ofwood thanks to the exceptionally fineiron oxide pigments in the advancedformulation and the elimination of allpigments from the basecoat. “Ultra’s UV light absorbers preventradiation damage and fading, and whenused as recommended on new wood oras a maintenance solution, thispremium translucent system candeliver up to seven years’ protection.”

Precision, speed & ease of fittingsSynseal’s Global conservatory rooffeatures a single 8mm bolt and 13mmnut system for the all-important rafterfixing detail, which is both practical andsimple to fit. The precision-engineeredsecurity locking bolt eradicatesmovement between the bolt and rafter, with no drilling of the roof rafterrequired as the fixing bolt locates into aspecial purpose-designed channel. Thisdesign leaves rafter drainage channelsunhindered to work effectively andeliminates leakage points, as no drillingmeans no leaks. When the fixing bolt istightened with an allen-key, the cuttinghead of the bolt bites up into thechannel to firmly lock the assembly intoplace. This results in a connectionwhich is strong, reliable and secure. The single fixing bolt is positionedthrough pre-drilled holes in both therafter bottom cladding and eaves beamand is then fastened with the nutinternally, to save valuable installationtime and eliminate any need forawkward rafter positioning andfastening of multiple bolts.

Crittall Steel Windowsright formula for Science Museum

The Science Museum in London isa much loved and familiarlandmark, but over the years, theexterior has fallen prey to the wearand tear of the London way of life. A replacement window programme wasrecently announced, and appointed byarchitects, Kirsop and Co, Crittall had todraw on its extensive experience and expertiseto replace the windows to the ExhibitionRoad entrance. Having provided initial elevation and detaileddrawings for planning purposes, Crittallhelped to obtain permission to the satisfactionof all parties, including main contractor, DBR(London) Ltd, and supplying its Corporate2000 profiles, began the meticulous and exactreplacement programme. One of the features of the glazing was theinclusion of Enduroshield transparent coatingto the surface of the glass for the very largetop hung fixed light Corporate 2000 profiles. The openings at the top are supplied withelectronic chain actuators, supplied by longterm Crittall partner, SE Controls. Doubleglazed, the centre pane of the glazing achievesthe required U value of 1.2w/m2K for

compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations, with Low E glass on the inside tocontrol heat gain. The windows were finishedin black matt polyester powder coating. Logistically, Crittall faced numerouschallenges on the project, with a limited timeperiod each day to strip out, glaze and installthe profiles. With no deliveries allowed before6pm, the timing and meticulous attention todetail had to be exact in order for the smoothprogression of the instalment. However, withintense planning and thorough application, the windows were installed to schedule andwithin the time limits. “We are delighted with the finished result,”comments Mr Andrew Haycock of theEstates Department at the Science Museum.“In addition to brand new windows that meetall the requirements in terms of aesthetic andthermal value, the replaced windows were allrecycled, which reduced wastage and disposalcosts and which is a major environmentalbonus.” www.crittall-windows.co.uk

Flexible solution for anexceptional homeAn exceptional 5 bedroom new builddetached arts and crafts style home, approximately 680m2 over 4 floorslocated on a grandeur estate in Surrey isheated entirely by one air source,air/water outdoor unit. The luxurioushouse has under floor heatingthroughout and en-suite bathrooms toeach bedroom, all heated by wall to floortowel rails and fitted with larger thanaverage power showers, requiring a highvolume of water. The Daikin Althermalow temperature split system was initiallyspecified for the central heating anddomestic hot water, consisting of an8kW unit to the basement, a 16kW forthe ground floor and a further 16kWoutdoor unit for the 1st and 2nd floorheating and hot water. Space Air, distributors of the entireDaikin Altherma range changed thedesign of the system to one DaikinAltherma 39kW Flex outdoor unit.

Ground source heat pump from NIBEThe Newton Hall mansion, built in1722, was the home of theWiddringtons. Paul Hindhaugh,Managing Director of HindhaughHomes, purchased this magnificentGrade II listed Country House, which isroughly one quarter of the whole estate, with a view to restoring it back into abeautiful home for his family. From Paul’s previous experience of lowcost heating, from building a detachedfarm house that incorporated a NIBEground source heat pump, he looked atthe size of this new mansion house andthought that if the heating was going tobe provided by either oil or lpg, it mayhave meant exhorbitant utility bills. However, with installing renewabletechnology from NIBE, in conjunctionwith fitting underfloor heatingeverywhere within the property, theynow have an even heat distribution withconstant temperatures throughout thewhole house.

Ultima Solar launches cutting-edge technology to the UK Ultima Solar specializes in the

manufacture and distribution ofrenewable energy products thatenhance the green environment, and the new Thermodynamicpanels and hot water cylindersystem is the first of a raft of newrenewable products that thecompany plans to introduce ontothe UK market. This very excitingproduct combines tried and testedtechnology with an innovativesystem concept to produce hotwater for a fraction of the cost ofwater heated using more traditionalfuels. Thermodynamic panels are part ofthe next generation of greentechnology. Unlike traditional solarthermal heating that relies on thesun and daylight to generate heat, the Thermodynamic panels workday and night, in wind and rainbecause the panels are capable ofabsorbing both solar andenvironmental energy all year long, even during cold periods. They system comprises just twomain components — an aluminiumblack-coated panel that is fittedexternally either on the roof or walland a cylinder and compressor unithoused in a fully insulated casingalong with the necessaryelectronics. The system works in asimilar way to a heat pump orfridge as it uses a non-toxic andozone-friendly, sealed refrigerant to

transfer heat to the domestic hotwater. Its main source of energy isextracted from the outside air andincludes solar, wind and rain. Oncethe panel has extracted the energyfrom the atmosphere, it heats therefrigerant turning it into a gas, which is compressed to produce theheat that is transferred to the waterheld in hot water cylinder. Thepanel is capable of collecting theenergy from both sides of the paneland this cycle is constantly repeatedgiving hot water at 55°C on-tap,24/7. An added bonus is that thepanel doesn’t have to be southfacing; whether it’s facing south, east, west, or even north, it will stillproduce hot water! The specially designed cylinder ismade from high quality stainlesssteel and is for use on an unventedsystem. It is available in threecapacities – 100 litres, 200 litres and300 litres, catering for virtually alldomestic hot water needs. Afurther feature that makes theUltima Solar Thermodynamiccylinder superior to other productson the market is that the coilcarrying the refrigerant is woundaround the outside of the cylinder. This patented design means thatthe refrigerant cannot ever comeinto contact with the domesticwater. The cylinder includes a simple-to-use control panel that includes a

manual thermostat controlenabling the householder to set thedesired temperature of the water.Maximum heating capacity for thecylinder is 2500 watts, with aworking pressure up to 6 bar. Toavoid the risk of legionellapneumophila bacteria developing(the cause of Legionnaire’s disease),a 2kW electric immersion heater isincluded and is programmed toautomatically switch on for fivehours, once a week, to bring thewater up to 61°C (at 60°C anylegionella bacteria is killed within32 minutes*). Additional safetyfeatures include pressure andtemperature valves and the panelitself is tested to 10 bar. Installation is straightforward as thepanels, which weigh less than 8kgand measure 1960mm high x920mm wide x 20mm deep, can befitted to a wall eliminating the needto clamber over a roof; there is noglass or glycol to worry about aswith other solar panel systems, butfitting must be undertaken by F GasEngineers. The overall dimensionsof the cylinder — 600mm wide x590mm deep x910mm/1360mm/1925mm high)— allow installation in an airingcupboard, utility room, garage evena loft space, and replaces anyexisting hot water cylinder.

Truly affordable hot water has arrived inthe UK and is set to take over fromtraditional hot water heaters that use gas orelectric, and even existing solar thermal andPV systems. Ultima Solar of Chelmsford,Essex, has been given sole distributionrights in the UK for the ThermodynamicPanel, which is made in Spain.

The Yutaki air to water heat pumpalready has the highest COP on themarket and this new innovation makesfurther strides in seasonal efficiency. Hitachi’s Yutaki heat pumps producesanitary hot water and heating like anyoil or gas boiler but transformsrenewable energy from the air outsideinto heat. Every 1kW of electricity usedto power the heat pump can provide upto 5kW of energy for heating; this canreduce heating bills by up to 60% andcut CO2 emissions by 50% compared totraditional boiler-led systems. The extra innovation in the Yutaki-S80is that it has two compressors, workingin a smart cascade system, with tworefrigerant cycles - R410a and R134a.To maximize seasonal efficiency, thesecond refrigerant cycle is only operatedas a booster, when very high watertemperature is required - the rest of thetime, only one cycle is used. The Yutaki-S80 will be ideal for existingproperties, in particular olderestablishments where higher watersupply temperatures may be required tokeep the house warm – as well as fornew builds. It is designed for boilersubstitution, offering heating andsanitary hot water all year round,

without boiler back-up. The Yutaki-S80 is easy to install andoperate; it’s a split system, usingHitachi’s IVX outdoor unit with abrand new standalone indoor unit, which is designed and manufactured inHitachi’s purpose-built factory in Spain.Six different models, covering a rangefrom 10 to 16 kW are available in singlephase or three phase versions. Theindoor unit is a standard width of 600mm allowing seamless integration intokitchens and utility rooms and includesa 200 or 260-litre SHW tank. The system is simple to control; itswireless remote controller is a variationof the well-received and successfuldesign used with the existing Yutaki-Ssystem, which includes a helpful LCDgraphic display, one-touch holidaybutton, weekly timer and frostprotection.Rodolphe Jacson, European MarketManager, Hitachi Air ConditioningEurope SAS, said, “The Yutaki range isat the forefront of technology inDomestic Heating and Hitachi isdelighted to be bringing the Yutaki-S80to its customers, with its impressive arrayof energy-efficient benefits.” Other models in the Yutaki-S split

system range, all of which includeauxiliary heating as standard, areavailable with up to 60°c leaving watertemperature and in capacities from5.1kW to 24.0kW. This energy efficientrange is Eurovent and NF PAC certifiedand the 5.1kW model has a market-leading COP of 5.0. Hitachi also manufactures a range ofYutaki-M Monobloc heat pumps withoutputs from 5kW to 17kW all withMicrogeneration Certification Schemeapproval and NF PAC certification. TheYutaki-M won Hitachi the ‘HeatingManufacturer of the Year’ title at theInstallerLive Awards UK 2011, for itsenergy efficiency and innovation. All of the Yutaki range can beconnected to underfloor heating, convectors, radiators and domestic hotwater tanks. At the end of 2012 Hitachiwill launch the KNX Gateway, allowingthe full Yutaki range to be controlled bya BMS system. The Yutampo is another heat pump inHitachi’s range and can be installedindependently of Yutaki-M or S. Itcomprises a single-split heat pumpoutdoor unit and an indoor, 262-litrestainless steel tank. The outdoor unit isequipped with a DC inverter

compressor and facilitates a servicewater temperature of up to 65°C (withactivated electric heating). Training and support for all thesesystems is available for installers atHitachi Aircademy centres acrossEurope and through its largedistribution network.

AERECO: Expert says ‘DCV more effective thanCONVENTIONAL MECHANICAL VENTILATION SYSTEMS’According to independent H&V consultant Dr. Chris Irwin, DCV systems are far

more effective and energy efficient than their MVHR counterparts. Here he details the evidence and data.

Increased emphasis on SAP as house builders lookfor the most energy efficient method of ventilationhas led to a situation where MEV and MVHRventilation systems are perceived as the onlysystems that can ventilate air tight homesadequately and still meet Target Emission Rates(TERs).

We are half way towards the Government’s target tomake all new housing carbon neutral by 2016, butDCV, probably the most effective energy savingventilation innovation proven to reduce emissionsand slash running costs is left to languish on thesidelines of new build projects because the Code forSustainable Homes (which DCV satisfiescompletely) is so tightly tied to SAP.

The SAP assessment procedure is only applied to‘recognised technologies’, ie: mechanical extractventilation (MEV) & MVHR; the “key” indicators ofenergy efficiency measured under SAP beingspecific Fan Power(SFP) and heat recovery efficiencythrough the heat exchanger.

DCV systems can’t be measured against SAP as theyprovide variable ventilation depending onoccupancy.

This state of affairs has left the not so effectiveMVHR in pole position simply because SAP has nomethodology to measure DCV performance, whichhas unfortunately put the technology on the backburner despite its many advantages over MVHR interms of better indoor air quality, energy efficiency, cost and ease of installation and operation.

Nevertheless, DCV is the system recommended inthe 2009 NHBC report ‘Indoor air quality in highlyenergy efficient homes – a review’ which says: “The

next drive by the industry will be for advancedcontrols and, in particular, for demand controlledventilation (DCV). If the energy savings resultingfrom the potential reduction in fan operation andheat loss are to be realised, the ‘building empty’ and‘room empty’ minimum ventilation rates must bedetermined.”

And now there is conclusive evidence that shows theimpact of different ventilation systems on annualenergy consumption.

The house used for this comparison is a typical1930s two storey, three bedroom semi-detachedproperty with three wet rooms. Typical air tightnessfor this type of property is N50 value around 7m3/hr/m2 envelope area.

The annual heating season is taken to be 33 weekslong and for the purpose of comparison it isassumed that the property has a gas fired centralheating system.

The research shows that the most energy efficientventilation system is Demand Controlled PSV,followed by MVHR and thirdly, Demand ControlledMEV.

The three worst energy consuming ventilationsystems are in the following order Standard MEV,Positive Input ventilation (PIV) and finally,Individual Extract Fans.

In SAP Q bench testing, MVHR meets all the Codecriteria for energy efficiencies but in reality aninstallation turns in different results to a SAP benchtest carried out in laboratory conditions. Theproblem is that for the technology to deliver the highefficiencies seen in the SAP Q tests, the dwellingsmust be air tight – and this is not happening.

At the Zero Carbon Hub conference in February,‘Progress towards 2016’, Alan Gilbert of BSRIAinformed the meeting that in 2011 BSRIA testedapproximately 7500 properties for air tightness ofwhich only 200 were to the 2010 version of theBuilding Regulations. In 2012 he estimates BSRIAwill test 8000 to 10000 properties of which 1500 willachieve Building Regulations.

He went on to say that according to ‘The DomesticVentilation Compliance Guide Section 5.2’measurement of air flows should be performedusing equipment that has been calibrated at a UKASaccredited calibration centre.

BSRIA Instrument Solutions is the only UKASaccredited calibration laboratory for evaluating airvolume devices with a test facility specificallydesigned for products used on domestic ventilationsystems. However, said Gilbert, InstrumentSolutions has to date only calibrated three hoodsand anemometers not belonging to BSRIA for airvolume. “So who is measuring compliance and onwhat authority?” he asked.

A recent Ventilation and IndoorAir Quality Task Force (VIAQ)report raises concerns aboutMVHR that need to be takenvery seriously. “The TaskGroup considers that examplesof failures in typical design, installation and commissioningpractice are all too commonand these will have the effect ofreducing the performance ofsystems. Badly performingsystems may not deliver theanticipated carbon savings andmay result in degraded IAQwith related consequences forhealth.”

It also commented that : “TheTask Group noted thatalthough good control isessential to the correctoperation of systems, goodpractice in the design andprovision of controls isuncommon. Clearly this needsto be addressed. Realising goodperformance throughout thelife of systems also requiresthat maintenance is undertakenin accordance withmanufacturers’ requirements. In this regard the Task Groupnoted that many systems havebeen installed in locations, suchas roof spaces, where access foruser-maintenance is restricted. It also noted anecdotal reportsthat a market for replacementfilters does not exist at present, which suggests that even basicmaintenance is not beingundertaken, possibly becauseusers are not aware of therequirement for it.”

Making the Most of the Rain: Nu-Heat’s RWH By supplying the water for these non-potable applications, arainwater harvesting (RWH) system can replace 30% to 50% ofthe mains water consumption used in a household, making asignificant difference to an average family in terms of water billswhere water is metered. Nu-Heat’s RWH range from Roth includes 3,500L, 5,000L,7,000L and 10,000L options. Roth tanks are amongst the bestavailable due to overall quality and two features in particular.Firstly, the tanks are low profile so don’t require such a deepinstallation pit as other models that have a goldfish bowl shape;this also means that the tank can be installed in locations with ahigher water table. Secondly, the tank is made from a singlemoulded piece without seams, ensuring integrity and makinginstallation more straightforward as the pieces don’t have to beput together on site. The tank is still relatively light formanoeuvring into position. The systems include a number of useful accessories available forpurchase to widen the potential for installation. The first is astronger lid which is suitable for tanks being installed under adrive. The lid is able to withstand a 600kg wheel load. As with anytank installation on a drive, a concrete ring must still be put aroundthe lid so that it doesn’t get pushed down when driven over. A second accessory is a periscope extension. This is for use insituations where a tank needs to be deeper than normal, such aswhere water needs to travel further from the gutters. The existingperiscope is 700mm and the extension is 500mm. Minimal maintenance of the system is required. Visual inspectionfor leaks and faults should be conducted alongside cleaning andclearing of filters and rainwater collection gutters to ensure thatthe rainwater harvesting system continues to operate efficiently. This should be undertaken approximately four times a year, depending on the number of trees around the propertycontributing to the debris collected in gutters and filters.

Nuaire launches market-changingMVHR solution for apartmentsUK market leader in energy-efficientventilation systems, Nuaire hasannounced the launch of its latestwhole-house mechanical ventilation heatrecovery (MVHR) product forapartments, which will offer architectsand consultants greater flexibility intheir designs due to its very low depth. The new MRXBOX95-LP1 offers thelowest specific fan power of any low-profile void-mounted MVHR systemand is specifically designed to fit easilyinto apartments with ceiling voidrestrictions where space is at a premium.A recent study by the Royal Institute ofBritish Architects (RIBA) stated that ofthe eight key benefits for homebuyers, storage was top of the list.

Nuaire’s latest MVHR system will freeup valuable storage space forhomeowners whilst providing highperformance ventilation for up to six wetrooms. It will also avoid the need fordesigners to make allowances in theirinitial designs or make costly alterationsby having to lower ceilings to fit otherMVHR units.

Rinnai can win the energy battle for MoD The cost of hot water provision aloneacross so many disparate sites isformidable and in recent years the MoDhas gone a long way to cutting this cost byinstalling HE boilers and renewablessolutions such as GSHP and solar to offsetcarbon and reduce running costs.Technology, however, even in that shorttime has moved on apace and even thetrusty HE condensing boiler isn’t the mosteconomical method of heating water. The MoD has a sustainability agenda inplace for future suppliers as part of itsNext Generation Estate Contracts(NGEC) programme. NGEC covers allnew commercial arrangements fordefence facilities management, new-buildprojects and the management of trainingestate and military housing. According to Rinnai’s Chris Goggin, installation of gas fired condensingcontinuous flow water heaters throughoutMOD facilities could shave hundreds ofthousands of pounds a year from theDepartment’s total fuel bill. The Government itself has recognisedthe value of the modern condensingtechnology in gas fired water heaters andhas recently announced after a longconsultation process that non-condensinggas fired water heaters have now beeneliminated from use in changes toBuilding Regulations, Section two – PartL (Conservation of fuel and power), as itmoves to cement in place new legislationthat will help it meet its commitment fora 34% reduction in greenhouse gasemissions by 2020 and 80% by 2050.For more information on the RINNAIproduct range visit www.rinnaiuk.com

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) estate is worth £15.3bn and covers 240,000 hectares. It has 45,000buildings, including barracks, airfields, naval establishments, military training estate, workshops, offices,

messes, family housing, 1,300 scheduled monuments and 289 ‘sites of special scientific interest’ andannual procurement spend of £14 billion a year.

To date, the MoD’s stringent sustainabilityprogramme has already made impressiveheadway in cutting emissions. In 2008/09 itachieved the Government target of a 12.5 percent reduction in carbon emissions relative to the1999/2000 baseline, two years ahead ofschedule. Speaking of the policy in 2010, MarkGrant, head of NGEC contract development, said. “We must meet a range of statutorysustainability requirements and we aredetermined to ensure that our whole defenceestate, particularly military training facilities, cancontinue to support operational output asefficiently as possible.” That aim remains thesame in 2012 but how to keep up themomentum? According to experts at Rinnai, the use ofmodern HE gas fired condensing continuousflow hot water systems teamed with renewablessuch as ASHP, GSHP and solar for heatingpurposes is far and away the most energyefficient method to keep hot water costs down.Across the MoD estate there are plans for newbuild projects that are now out to tender and thisis a golden opportunity to install continuous flowgas water heaters and reap the reward of lowercarbon emissions and radically reduced fuel bills. It is also an ideal opportunity for the MoD toreview the countless hundreds of water heatersand boilers that are due for replacement andlook seriously at continuous flow condensing hotwater systems if it wants to continue to cutemissions substantially up to 2020 and beyond.

Alumasc - Ensuring British Standardscompliance for your Roof Drainage System

The calculator presents the user withfour modules for the calculation of: FoulDrainage, Internal RainwaterDrainage, Flat Roof Drainage andExternal Rainwater Drainage.

The Flat Roof calculator will design asystem to cater for the rainfall intensityof a specific project location. Byinputting relevant criteria, such as roofarea and design requirements, it will

calculate the required outlet type andnumber required.Once the Flat Roof drainagerequirements have been ascertained, the Internal Drainage calculator buildsan internal stack system to takerainwater internally from the flat roof, producing a variety of schematicsshowing the configuration of pipeworkas it would appear throughout thebuilding. For Foul Drainage, the systemdetermines the size of Harmer SMLpipework based upon the number ofappliances that will be connected to thestack. The user is prompted to selectfactors appropriate to the type ofbuilding then a drainage system isdesigned in accordance with BSEN12056-2:2000.For external rainwater disposal, theRainwater Gutter calculator designs a

system based on a range of criteria inputby the user. The system calculates thecorrect gutter size and type, providingfrequency of pipework based on the dataentered. This data is then retained foruse across the alternative product rangesand profiles.Architect Dan Boucher used theRainwater and Drainage Calculator forthe first time on a recent Flat Roofproject. He comments: “The newsoftware is a very easy and intuitivesystem. I can see this becoming a regularand significant part of my specificationprocess from now on and I would haveno hesitation in recommending thissoftware to other Architects andSpecifiers”.

In an industry first, Alumasc has designed a new Rainwater and Drainage Calculatorenabling Architects and Specifiers to build roof drainage systems which are automatically

compliant to BS EN 12056:2000 and are designed to protect for the life of the building.

Lanes’ sewer repair challenge is a winnerA challenging section of sewer almost jeopardised Severn Trent Water’smulti-million pound sewer renewal scheme in Nottingham, until theLanes Group came up with a clever — and award-winning — solution.

put our heads together and came upwith a plan. Like all the best ideas, itturned out to be simple, yet effective.”Firstly the team installed a series of one-metre patch liners using an inflatablepacker to line the widest 4-metre sectionof the sewer. But, where the600>650mm diameter changed to375mm, it wasn’t a gradual transition:the change from one to the other wasimmediate, literally a brick wall with thesmaller diameter sewer built in to it.And, because of the way a packer holdsits liner (i.e. not right to end of the unit)that left a 500mm section of sewerbrickwork exposed. This is where the team’s creativity camein. A 600mm section of 450mmdiameter, twin wall, plastic pipe wasfitted flush up to the brick face of theexisting 375mm pipe and secured inplace with a 375>450 tapered patchwrapped around the packer and theninflated to the 450mm diameter pipe. This created a structurally sealedextension to the 375mm pipe thatoverlapped 100mm into the patchedsection of the brick egg sewer.Due to the thickness of the twin wallplastic pipe, this now left a 50mm voidbetween the twin wall and newly-linedbrick egg. Injecting this with expandingfoam filled the void, supported theextended pipe and pushed against thebrickwork, securing loose bricks andproviding structural integrity. Excessfoam was cut back and the face of itsealed with render. (see photo).

Ged adds: “Everything came togetherperfectly, and both NMCNomenca andSTW were delighted by the results ofthe post-reline survey. On top of that, despite difficult and tight conditions andworking at night to avoid affectingbusinesses in the area, we completedeverything on time. We passed our ‘trial’with flying colours!

Chris Jones, contracts manager atNMCNomenca, says: “Operating

as one team with one commongoal, Severn Trent Water,

NMCNomenca and Lanes forDrains worked closely to drive

efficiency through innovation toensure the timely completion of

the scheme which benefited bothlocal businesses and customers.”

The project in Upper Parliament Street, which involved relining just 6-metres ofsewer with a contract value of just£14,500, was voted overall winner inthe UKSTT’s 2012 award in the ‘SmallScheme’ category. No one had been prepared to tackle thecrucial repair. The sewer was badlydilapidated with missing and loosebricks, including at the crown, but thereal challenge was the changing shapeand size of the sewer — 375mmdiameter round at one end and

600>650mm egg-shaped at the other.Ged Healy, project manager at Lanes, takes up the story: “We had just wonour first contract for STW’s maincontractor, NMCNomenca, to work ona scheme elsewhere when this trickyproblem came up so they asked us tohave a look — a ‘baptism of fire’, Ithink!

“We were confident that we could find asolution because we have relined plentyof unconventional pipes before, so we

Ball Packaging has carried out asuccessful roof refurbishmentproject without stripping out theexisting roof, thanks to KemperolV210 from Kemper System.

A specialist in packaging for the foodindustry, Ball Packaging has to adhere tostrict food certification rules oncleanliness and hygiene. So when theexisting 16,000m2 aluminium standingseam roof at the Wrexham productionplant started to show signs of wear, thecompany needed to find a solution thatwould enable a roof refurbishmentprogramme with as little disruption aspossible. Ball Packaging stipulated the need for acost-effective, FM Approved andlightweight roofing system, that did notrequire hot works or strip out and couldresist the acidic process chemicals thatwere causing the existing 18 year old

Kemper System has packaging factory refurb in the bagroof to corrode. It also had to behardwearing to withstand maintenancefoot traffic to the extensive plant andequipment located on the roof, be

flexible and have the permanentlyelastic properties required to cope withany thermal expansion across the hugesurface area of the roof. Kemperol

V210 from Kemper System was the onlysolution that met all of Ball Packaging’sexacting requirements.

The roof refurbishment was carried outby Granflex Roofing with the KemperolV210 which bonds directly to theexisting prepared roof substrate. A coldliquid-applied system installed in a singleprocess, the Kemperol V210 liquid resinsaturates a non-woven reinforcementfleece and cures to form a tough, seamless membrane that bondspermanently to the substrate and cannotdelaminate. The system was able tomatch the exact contours and addressthe complex details on the roof.Phil Kelly from Granflex commented:“By selecting Kemperol V210, a roofingsystem that can be applied on top of theexisting substrate with no strip out andvery little preparation, we were not onlyable to minimise the complexity of theprogramme but removed the risk ofcreating dust and debris that couldpresent contamination issues in a foodcertified environment.”www.kempersystem.com

Installed by scaffolding contractor, ProAccess Scaffolding, the Layher Keder XLsystem has been specified as a moveablefacility, which offers significant advantagesduring the 34-week refurbishmentprogramme. Martin Forsythe, Director of Pro AccessScaffolding Ltd., explains the operationalmethod that is being used “The glass roof above the east mall runsfor some 100 metres in length and has awidth of 11 metres, which pointed to theglass replacement work – being undertakenby specialist glazing company New GlassStructures Ltd. – being completedprogressively in bays,” he says. “This has seen some 35 metres of the roofarea covered by the apex configuration of

the Layher XL roof system which, becauseit is mounted on nylon castors that sit onrails along the full 100 metre length of theroof, can be readily repositioned as thework proceeds. Importantly,” he adds, “italso enables the protective roof to bemoved aside to provide crane access for theglazing panels.” By installing the temporary roof over justone third of the full work area, the supportscaffolds, built from the Centre’s car parkalongside, could be minimised – a majorconsideration given the importance ofretaining parking bays at the site. Thesupport structure for the roof has beeninstalled on the top floor of the car parkusing Layher Allround® scaffolding, whilston the first floor below, traditional tube and

Thisalso permits natural light to enter theworking area, avoiding the need forextensive artificial lighting,” he adds. “When used as a mobile system, thetemporary roof design – which can bespecified to accommodate a huge 40metre span – can be readily re-locatedquickly and with minimum manpower,”

he continues. “In the Leicesterinstallation, for example, the overall 35metres length and 22 metres span can bemanually repositioned by less than half adozen workers.” He points out that the facility also featureswalkways along both sides of the roofstructure to provide access for the ‘lockagainst lift off ’ fittings, which secure theroof structure to the scaffold after re-location. The use of the Keder XL roof on site alsooffers key advantages to the sitemanagement of Highcross ShoppingCentre in Leicester, not only because of itsability to minimise the uptake of availablecar park spaces with the support scaffold, but also because it enables the Centre toremain fully operational throughout theroof-glass refurbishment programme. The Surface That Always Shines On TVGranite Transformations continuesto be amongst the kitchen worktops ofchoice for TV home makeover shows, appearing most recently on ITV1’s ’60Minute Makeover’ and Channel 4’s ‘YouDeserve This House’. That’s probablybecause its ¼” thick material lends itselfperfectly to installing over existingsurfaces and produces a high qualityfinish that looks great on camera;although it has to be said that the name‘Transformations’ chimes in exactly withthe aspirational nature of these popularprogrammes. In return, GraniteTransformations has the chance toshowcase its ‘top that fits on top’ concepton national television and secure someuseful brand exposure. But equally, thereis an opportunity to contribute time andmaterial to some deserving causes, inthese instances a single mother battlingleukaemia and a community-based lifecoach working with vulnerable youngpeople.

Marcrist International a leading innovative manufacturer ofdiamond construction tools takes the issue of the occupational noiseinduced hearing loss very seriously, and has invested a considerable

amount of time and money to develop the BF850 SilentMAXdiamond blade to combat the problem.

Current UK Law states that themaximum permissible noise on a buildingsite is 87db(A) and conventional 230mmdiamond blades emit noise between 105-107 db(A) during cutting. The BF850SilentMAX generates up to 16 times lessnoise in all diameters from 115mm to400mm.By law the Employer is responsible forensuring that this noise is controlled, andthe use of hearing protection should onlybe considered after all other methods ofcontrolling noise at source have beenexhausted. The Law clearly states thatprimarily employers must use or hire noisereduced equipment, and employers whorisk contravening the law are liable forcompensation claims which can be ashigh as £60,000.00. Mario Halbeisen, Chairman of MarcristInternational believes the newlyintroduced blade is a major breakthroughin diamond cutting technology; “When Marcrist’s R&D teams startedtesting a large number of blades availablein the UK we couldn’t believe how noisythey were, some were unbearable and

Hear the differenceclearly dangerous to health. We alsotested a number of so called noisereduced blades, and whilst they didreduce the level of noise the cuttingperformance was poor. The BF850SilentMAX is a massive breakthrough,it’s the only blade on the market todaythat offers noise reduction that complieswith current UK law and gives superiorcutting performance.”Marcrist is so confident that the BF850SilentMAX not only reduces noise butoffers an unbeatable level ofperformance that they offer a 30 day noquibble guarantee on this blade.‘The BF850 SilentMAX is the bestdiamond blade with the lowest cost percut .. or your money back’With 2,000,000 people exposed topotentially harmful levels ofoccupational noise on a daily basis, thebenefits of the noise reduction can begained by everyone associated with theconstruction site and, Mario Halbeisensums up the new BF850 SilentMAX in anutshell;“The BF850 SilentMAX isrevolutionary, the only reason anyonecan have for not buying this blade is thatthey’re not aware of it!” Marcrist have long encouraged diamondblade users to ‘Experience thedifference’ with Marcrist, now they askyou to ‘Hear the difference’.

We are progressing andmoving forward, adapting ourproduct to customer demands andto industries where combustionengines are too dangerous.” Thatfact can be symbolised in color ofthe new E Truck. Instead of thecustomary muck-truck © orange, the E truck is painted… you guessedit: GREEN.

Sometimes it just comes down to tough, hardwork. If you’re looking for a tool to lighten yourload, the MAX Dumper from muck-truck©is the hardest working pedestrian operatedwheelbarrow on the market. The standardmuck-truck© is a commercial grade pieceof equipment, enabling one person to do thework of many without operator fatigue. TheMAX is that, too… but on steroids.
