Owen Ames Mathematics Mr. Jeffrey Nolt

Intelligent, creative, caring, and motivated—these are just a few of the words that describe Owen Ames. Owen has been named a Burrowes Scholar due to his outstanding academic achievement in mathematics. His success in math is rooted in his affinity for numbers, patterns, and problem solving. Many times the solution to a math challenge just comes to him, but each time he is able to explain his thinking to his classmates. While many students succeed in math, Owen’s creativity and hard work are what set him apart. Given his talent, Owen could easily coast through school. Yet, he thrives on challenges and actively seeks them out. With quiet leadership, Owen brings out the best in everyone around him. When peers observe his command of academic knowledge, attention to detail, and creative perspective, they are motivated to perform better themselves. His example inspires. Besides academic achievement, Owen has a range of interests which he routinely gives up free time to pursue. A talented musician, Owen plays viola in the orchestra and sings with the school chorus. Outside of school he is interested in computer coding and Minecraft. And on top of all this, Owen is a voracious reader who finishes books as fast as he gets his hands on them. Owen is truly a remarkable young man, and he will surely continue to meet success not only throughout his school years, but also in life.

Owen Dean Mathematics Miss Eva Strawser

Albert Einstein once stated that “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” Pablo Picasso on a similar note stated that “Action is the foundational key to all success.” Owen Dean takes action in his personal learning as a student and a leader. He is an inquisitive student who brings so much knowledge and deep connection to the discussions in the classroom setting across subject areas. Owen is an individual who is not afraid to make a mistake in an effort to learn more deeply and fully, especially in the area of mathematical concepts. He is achieving above his grade level, yet is patient with his peers who may be struggling on a concept at the fifth grade level. Logical and mathematical thought are processes Owen uses to push his learning experience to new heights, taking personal initiative to ask questions and request more learning experiences. As a well-rounded student with varied interests, Owen enjoys more than just mathematical knowledge. Musical talents are heard when he plays his flute in the band. Sciences are of interest to Owen and his mathematical strengths assist him in hypothesis making and data analyses. He is an avid reader which aides in his language arts and reading skills. The desire to learn and the ability to ask critical questions will take Owen far no matter what path he may choose.

Jeimy Elvira-Parades Art Mrs. Lauri Loar-Stauffer

The Hans Herr Art Department is pleased to award the 2017 Burrowes Scholar art award to Jeimy Elvira-Parades. Jeimy is a fifth grade student in Kristin Maser’s homeroom. Jeimy is being recognized for this prestigious award because of her technical and creative artistic abilities shown throughout this year’s body of two- and three-dimensional artwork produced in art class. Her artistic sensibility is indicative in her works of art that include a sense of color, craftsmanship, and creativity which are important elements in art and design. Jeimy received a scholarship for the 2015 Summer Youth Art Studio classes at Pennsylvania College of Art and Design (PCAD). She also has participated in various art illustration competitions throughout her years at Hans Herr and has won multiple competitions. If you ask Jeimy what her goal is in life, she will tell you she wants to be an artist. With her interest and work ethic, she is well on her way! Congratulations, Jeimy!

Justin Gouger Band Mrs. Heather Ceresini Justin Gouger exemplifies a model fifth grade band student. He is attentive, talented, and determined. During lessons and rehearsals, Justin never settles for “just okay.” He strives to play his music to the best of his ability, which is a worthy goal to which every musician aspires. Justin takes the time to dedicate himself to the details of his performance such as pitch, tone, dynamics, and articulation. He never settles for anything that is less than his best. His dedication goes beyond that of most fifth grade musicians. Along with being an outstanding French horn player, Justin excels in many other subject areas, including math and language arts. He is able to manage his time so that he can practice his instrument 30 minutes every day while staying on top of his other course work! In addition to his academic commitments, Justin plays on a youth soccer team, and enjoys lengthy bike rides with his family! “The beautiful thing is, music can be like a time machine.”- Anonymous. That is how I feel when I hear Justin play his French horn … I cannot believe that I am listening to a fifth grader perform; and I certainly find it hard to believe that two years of teaching has passed us by so quickly. Justin is truly an astounding all around fifth grader and a gifted musician. It is with great pleasure that I nominate Justin as the fifth grade band Burrowes Scholar in Band.

Page 5: THE BURROWES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Justin Gouger Mathematics Mrs. Denise Calhoun

“It is time for us to stand and cheer for the doer, the achiever, the one who recognizes the challenge and does something about it.” -Vince Lombardi Justin Gouger is one we need to stand and applaud. He has certainly recognized the academic challenges set before him, and has indeed done something about them. He eagerly digs into math problems and is a human sponge, absorbing as much new knowledge as possible. In addition to his academic pursuits, Justin finds time to engage in other interests including sports and band. Justin: the doer! Justin is a student who achieves success in all academic areas. He is an exceptional reader; all his writing exceeds levels of proficiency. Justin does outstanding work in science, social studies, and instrumental music. In the area of mathematics, Justin puts his analytical skills to use in a way few other fifth grade students are capable of doing, and it is mathematics for which he is receiving this award. Justin: the achiever! Justin never gives up on a difficult task. He likes to solve problems by himself, but never hesitates to collaborate with peers. He also doesn’t hesitate to seek help if a task is daunting, but only after giving a significant effort to finding a solution on his own. Justin meets every challenge head-on and perseveres until he finds a solution. Justin: the one who recognizes the challenge and does something about it! It is an honor and privilege to proclaim Justin Gouger a fifth grade Burrowes Scholar in Mathematics.

Cole Jenkins Mathematics Miss Eva Strawser

According to Albert Einstein, “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” Cole Jenkins is an imaginative student who utilizes prior knowledge, creative thought, and critical thinking to develop his personal learning in and out of the classroom setting. He is a student who grasps mathematical concepts quickly, helping him to achieve the grade level content prior to many of his peers. Cole works hard to think outside the box when working on hands-on problem-solving projects in math and science class. Cole has many interests. His love of animals and his knowledge of science help Cole reach for his dream of being a veterinarian in the future. An artistic pencil sketch, an instrumental solo, or coding work produced on Scratch are several of the additional ways that Cole’s imagination, creativity, and ability are on display throughout the school week. Cole takes pride in his ability and challenges himself on a regular basis which will help Cole achieve goals he sets as his mindset.

Emma Landis is an outstanding academic scholar, exemplary musician and extremely well-rounded individual whose strong self-motivation and tremendous desire to excel have served her well in all student endeavors. For these reasons, it is my pleasure to recognize Emma as our fifth grade Burrowes Scholar in Vocal Music. Not only do Emma’s accomplishments demonstrate an excellent work ethic, but she also displays both maturity and humility as she interacts respectfully with peers and teachers. Simply put, I have always enjoyed teaching Emma due to her pleasant personality and eager enthusiasm evident on a daily basis. I have observed Emma’s musical prowess and fervor for learning ever since she was my student in first grade; she is truly a teacher’s dream! As a musician, she is an advanced student in terms of her contributions both in the music classroom and during chorus and orchestra rehearsals and concert performances. More importantly, Emma’s leadership skills speak volumes beyond her chronological age. Emma shows extraordinary character, possessing qualities her classmates admire and choose to emulate. She is diligent in her pursuit of excellence, truly distinguished as one who prefers to help others in a most quiet, supportive, unassuming way. Emma is an individual of integrity. Emma’s keen yearning for success coupled with a positive attitude and purposeful determination have certainly earned her the distinction as this year’s fifth grade Burrowes Scholar in Vocal Music

Luke’s outstanding academic achievement in language arts make him a shining example in our classroom. He excels as a reader and a writer and demonstrates high level knowledge and skills in language arts. He is able to take his learning to advanced levels and can showcase his work with creativity and individuality. He is an extremely capable and confident student who is consistently willing to work hard and try his best. Although Luke’s diligent academic work makes him an excellent choice as a Burrowes Scholar, it is just one of his admirable qualities. Luke has impeccable manners, is compassionate and kind, is always willing to help a fellow classmate, and is respectful at all times. Classmates look up to him as a role model and leader, and teachers value his genuine thankfulness. With his thoughtfulness and manners, Luke has made a positive impact on the classroom and school community. It is with great pride that I recognize Luke Richardson as a Burrowes Scholar. His exemplary skills as a student, as well as his kind and compassionate spirit, will allow him to continue to have a positive impact on the world.

Hagen Supeck English/Language Arts Mr. David Fakolt

Hagen Supeck is an exceptional fifth grade student with a positive attitude. She is an independent, confident learner. An unnamed author once opined, “Some people dream of success... while others wake up and work hard at it.” Hagen has a sense of direction and purpose well beyond the maturity of the average fifth grade student. Hagen is a critical thinker and problem solver who strives to learn new things. Hagen has very high expectations for herself, and takes great pride in the finished product that she turns in. Hagen is willing to work hard and to always give 100% effort. She approaches all of her academic studies with a desire to do her best, and her results reflect just that - a highly refined quality product. Hagen has produced outstanding results not only in language arts, but truly in all of her academic endeavors this year. Recently, Hagen was chosen from hundreds of candidates to be a leader in our schools first ever STEM Bowl Competition; and lead she did! The team earned fifth place out of 24 teams. Hagen is now in our enrichment program here at school where she is involved with individualized projects helping to hone her leadership, creativity, and problem solving skills. Academically strong, Hagen excels at her many varied interests too, such as adding her considerable talent to our school orchestra. Outside of school, Hagen shines with her soccer team. Hagen excels in academics, sports, and the arts. Hagen is a young woman of high moral character who leads quietly by example. Leadership, diligence, a mature approach to tasks, and thoughtfulness toward others describe Hagen. She possesses a bright imagination, fun sense of humor, and well-rounded abilities. Hagen is a well-deserving Burrowes Scholar.

Page 8: THE BURROWES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Hagen Supeck Orchestra Mr. Robert Shaubach

I am proud to recommend Hagen Supeck as the Hans Herr fifth grade Burrowes Scholar in Orchestra. I have had the sincere pleasure of working with Hagen for the past two years. During that time I have continuously been impressed by the quality of Hagen’s musical contributions and collaborations with other students involved in the orchestra program. Hagen began her time in the L-S Orchestra Program as beginner student in fourth grade. In a very short period of time she has developed excellent individual and group performance skills. Hagen plays the viola very well for her age and experience. However, she is not a Burrowes Scholar because of her musical achievements alone. In both large and small group settings, Hagen consistently demonstrates kindness and a willingness to serve others. In a very quiet and unassuming manner, Hagen performs well individually while consistently encouraging and assisting others, without concern for personal reward. Hagen’s musical accomplishments are exemplary, and I truly appreciate her participation in the orchestra program at Lampeter-Strasburg. Her exceptional character when interacting with her peers and teachers makes an immensely positive impact on our school community. It is with great respect and admiration that I nominate Hagen Supeck as the fifth grade Burrowes Scholar in Orchestra in 2017.

Riley Dawson Technology Education Mr. Kenneth Neumann

Choosing a Burrowes Scholar from the Martin Meylin Technology Education program is never easy. There are always a number of highly qualified students. Each of them are hardworking, responsible, and talented. That makes it even more notable that Riley Dawson rose to the challenge to become this year’s Burrowes Scholar in Technology Education. During this years manufacturing unit, her design and prototyping skills were exemplary. Her design was different than most, deviating from the usual designs created by middle school students. Her ability to try new things and then to present them to her peers is one of the reasons she is here this evening. Riley proved to be a valuable part of the class team when the production began as well. When conducting research, she demonstrated her ability to only include facts and then to present them in a professional matter. Riley’s creativity shined as she completed assignments as well. Her perfectionistic style and lightheartedness allow her to succeed when she runs into difficulty. Her attention to detail and tenacity as well as her warm personality make her a leader among her peers. It is both an honor and a pleasure to announce Riley Dawson as the Burrowes Scholar in Technology Education.

Owen Fikkert Physical Education Mr. Dustin Weiss Leadership, respect, enthusiasm … these are all characteristics that describe Owen Fikkert, Martin Meylin’s Boys’ Physical Education Burrowes Scholar recipient. Owen always shows up to class ready to learn, ready to lead, and ready to participate by putting forth maximum effort. Having Owen in class makes a teacher’s job easier because his leadership, both vocally and by example, helps the class run more smoothly. Owen treats all students with respect, regardless of ability, and strives to include them in class activities. In class, Owen always displays enthusiasm for the activity and tries his best to become better skilled within his own ability level, which is contagious to the other students in the class. In addition to being an exemplary student, Owen is currently a member of the SWS and Rock Sports Academy’s baseball teams, Lampeter-Strasburg’s eighth grade basketball team, and the Willow Street Wolverines football team. A busy student-athlete, no doubt! In high school, Owen plans to continue playing sports for Lampeter-Strasburg and he will, undoubtedly, continue to succeed both on and off of the field. Owen is also an exemplary student in the classroom where he has made honor roll every marking period in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade! It is easy to see why Owen has been chosen as this year’s Burrowes Scholar in Physical Education. The future is bright as Owen takes his many abilities to the high school and forward. Please help us congratulate him on a job well done!

Page 12: THE BURROWES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Kendall Hadesty Spanish Miss Rebekah Heim

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” ‒Nelson Mandela I think everyone will tell you that learning a first language is challenging, let alone learning a second. However, the acquisition of a foreign language introduces the learner to a new culture, a new language, and ultimately a new way of viewing the world. Although only in eighth grade, Kendall Hadesty is not only undergoing but excelling at learning Spanish. Over her last three years at Martin Meylin, Kendall has exemplified diligence in her studies, hard work, and enthusiasm. During class, Kendall is prepared with every assignment, contributes in conversational classroom activities, and is eager to correct and learn from her mistakes. A responsible, confident, and natural leader, it is evident her studies continue outside the classroom. Outside of school Kendall is actively involved with both Pennsylvania Classics and the school soccer team, as well as track and field. Even with her various interests, Kendall still makes exemplary schoolwork a priority and excels in the Spanish classroom. It is with joy that I look forward to the future Kendall has in store and hope she continues her pursuit of learning Spanish. It has been a joy to teach Kendall over the past school year and it is my pleasure to announce her as the Burrowes Scholar in Spanish.

Olivia Harris Physical Education Mrs. Denise Buch

Olivia, in a word, is wonderful. Her smile and attitude light up the gym. She has a positive spirit, shows compassion for others, and leads by example. Olivia excels in whatever she puts her mind to, and she never hesitates to let her team or classmates share in her success. She is kind, attentive, and never seeks the spotlight. Olivia is a self-described hard-worker who likes to keep things organized. Straight As in school and a passion for life keep Olivia focused, thriving, and involved. Olivia plays third base for SWS softball, and she has taken gymnastics at Lives in Balance for seven years. She volunteers at Oak Leaf Manor helping the elderly, and she volunteers at the Y working with younger children. Olivia also helps organize and pack clothes for Gain USA to help those in need. In addition, Olivia is getting confirmed at church this year, attending both LCBC and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. When I asked Olivia what she sees in her future, she told me she’d like to be either a surgeon or a professional softball player. Maya Angelou said “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” Olivia you are well on your way! Wherever life takes you, I know you will make the most of each and every opportunity. I am very proud to name you as my Burrowes Scholar.

Page 13: THE BURROWES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Liana Howe Social Studies Mr. Kevin Franklin

This year’s eighth Grade Burrowes Scholar for Social Studies is Miss Liana Howe. Liana is a rare social studies student. Not only does she strive for perfection academically, but also she does it with a pure passion and joy towards learning about history. I could speak incessantly about how every assignment that she completes and every test that she takes shows complete mastery of the content, but I do not believe that this would be truly representative of the type of student that Liana is in class. What is most amazing about her is how she totally immerses herself in the curriculum. Every written assignment that she submits goes well above the 100% mark of the rubric as she dives into each concept and every idea with a passion that demonstrates an analysis of the past and its connection to the present that most adults fail to make. She is always ready to diagnose a historical and present day issue while providing a well-thought-out reflection of it. Her joy of interacting with history is a rare quality for an eighth grader. Along with this, Liana continues to model academic perfection while exemplifying stellar character, too. Although she always has a strong, well-thought-out opinion regarding historical events, she enjoys listening to other’s perspectives as well. She is kind and supportive of her classmates and teachers. Her upbeat presence contributes to a very positive classroom environment. It should go without saying that Liana is the type of student that any teacher would love to have in class. Congratulations to Liana Howe for being selected as the 2017 Burrowes Scholar in Social Studies in the eighth grade.

Wesley Leaman Mathematics Mrs. Joellen Rowe Mr. William Heyser

Ralph Waldo Emerson said that “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.”, and Wesley’s passion for learning mathematics is truly admirable. He has a tremendous desire to learn new things and he often explores in-depth mathematical concepts on his own. To do that, you really must love mathematics and have a drive for excellence in that field. That is why Wesley is our Burrowes Scholar in Mathematics. His great mathematical mind and very good work-ethic will enable him to achieve great things in his lifetime. Wesley is currently taking Accelerated Algebra II in the high school, which may seem a little intimidating for some eighth graders, but not Wesley. He is fearless and is even emerging as a classroom leader in a class of ninth and tenth graders. He presented a unique way of factoring trinomials to the whole class one day early in the semester, and at that point I knew he was very special. We do this weekly contest called “the Pioneer Challenge,” in which I give them six challenging PA Math League problems from all areas of math. Wesley is our top scorer. Our top kids usually get about two or three questions correct, but Wesley gets about five or six. This is tremendous! He also participated and competed in the MathCounts program. His enthusiasm for mathematics was repeatedly demonstrated as he explained the way he solved problems, and devoured new ways to approach them. Wesley earned a 15th place medal at the Lincoln Chapter competition and a second place trophy with his team. In addition to his mathematical excellence, he is an wonderful young man. He is polite, respectful, and he comes to class each day ready to learn with a positive attitude. He is kind and considerate to his classmates, and he is always willing to help others who are struggling, and this speaks volumes about his character. Wesley is a joy to have in class and I am so happy and proud of him for this great accomplishment. Congratulations on being the 2017 Burrowes Scholar in Mathematics; you are a remarkable young man.

Page 14: THE BURROWES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Ava Martin Visual Art Mr. Edward Leone

With a strong natural talent and a tireless work ethic, Ava has gone over, above, and beyond the highest of expectations for achievement in her eighth grade Visual Arts class this year. Her ability to draw and paint subjects from real life as well as from her imagination provides a sound basis for the creation of the fantastic works of art that she has produced throughout her three years here at Martin Meylin. Beginning from the very start of her Middle School career, in the first learning activity of her sixth grade class, Ava produced an amazingly designed letter that showed excellent drawing skills and unique ingenuity. When she was given the challenge to draw a portrait in seventh grade, she was able to capture the proportions of the facial features with an excellent use of charcoal shading. This year she continued to show her above average abilities by demonstrating her shading and outlining skills in a still life pencil drawing. One of the finest examples of her knowledge in subject of Visual Art is her acrylic painting that shows the head of a lion. The excellent sense of detail combined with the unique use of color exemplify a supreme understanding of not only the basic elements of art, but also the complex principles of design. The outstanding achievements that Ava has attained in her art classes are what make her a Burrowes Scholar, and the efforts that she exerts in making art work outside of class are what make her an artist. One great example of this is the incredible sense of detail that she is able to capture as she creates an exemplary work of art in the small space of a single fingernail. With her natural talent and her diligent work ethic, Ava Martin will surely have many options for her future as she has demonstrated the potential for future success in any field of art.

Lily Stoltzfus Family and Consumer Science Mrs. Wendy Irwin

It has been my distinct pleasure to have Lily in Family and Consumer Science these past two years. She is a kind, caring, and compassionate young lady. Lily is a very responsible student who is always willing to lend a helping hand. She is meticulous, conscientious, and disciplined. Her work ethic is superb. She demands perfection of herself and is willing to put forth the required effort to achieve her goals. Lily has done outstanding work in all areas of FCS including sewing, foods and nutrition, consumerism, and child development. She has earned a 100%. Lily has demonstrated creativity in completing classwork. Her determination, combined with her desire to succeed, has resulted in excellent class projects. I could always count on Lily to surpass my expectations! In class Lily demonstrates leadership ability. She leads by example and has earned the respect of her peers. She actively participates in class. Lily demonstrates problem-solving skills and accepts with a smile any challenge presented to her. I recently learned that Lily likes to bake for relaxation. She even made a video explaining the chemical reactions that occur during the baking of a cake. Who knows, maybe we have a future food scientist in our midst! Whatever Lily’s future holds, I am confident that her drive, determination, discipline, and enthusiasm will allow her to succeed! I am pleased and proud to honor Lily Stoltzfus as our Burrowes Scholar in Family and Consumer Science. Congratulations, Lily, on a job well done!

Page 15: THE BURROWES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Megan Stratton Science Mr. Jay Lance

The eighth grade science curriculum spans the diverse fields of chemistry and physics and touches on both conceptual and practical knowledge of both disciplines. Success at this level requires an ability not just to work hard, but to challenge some core beliefs about how the world works. Megan Stratton met this challenge head on this year and, in a class of strong learners and high achievers, stood out in both scholarship and comprehension and is the Martin Meylin Science Department Burrowes Scholar for 2016 – 2017. Megan’s work ethic and attention to detail, skills that are mandatory in the sciences, are two of the reasons she stood out this year. Megan excels in note-taking and in following up with her teachers when she doesn’t completely understand a topic. With her great sense of humor and enthusiasm for the subject, she has been a joy to teach. Megan is not sure what she wants to study after graduating in four years, but she is a fan of science and math, and our department is rooting for the sciences and engineering. Regardless, she is sure to be a success and is more than ready for the challenges of high school and beyond. Carl Sagan said, “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” Megan Stratton is poised to be one of the people that drive that discovery. The Martin Meylin Science Department is honored to proclaim Megan Stratton as the Burrowes Scholar in Science this year. Congratulations, Megan, on your accomplishment! Your dedication and your scholarship will take you far in life.

Kiana Sweger German Mr. Joseph Mencarini

When an entire classroom full of honors students, upon hearing a question during instruction, all say, “uhh...ask Kiana, she’ll know…”, it tells me something about the caliber of German student that she is. Kiana has gone above and beyond what was required of her in each of the four areas of language learning: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. She sponges up new vocabulary words and recalls them with accuracy and skill. It’s not just in my classroom, either. Kiana is a high-achieving, well-rounded student in all subject areas. Additionally, she is a star player on the school’s basketball and soccer teams. Earlier this year, she was voted Queen of Hearts at the Martin Meylin Valentine’s Dance.

During group work, such as Quizlet Live vocabulary reviews, it was almost comical how often Kiana’s group, regardless of who the other members were, was the winning team. I even had to find ways of evening out the field, running the risk of becoming something too close for comfort to the Handicapper General from Vonnegut’s Harrison Bergeron. This wasn’t just this year, either. She excelled in sixth and seventh grades as well. On Duolingo, her experience points are about eight times the class average. That’s commitment and diligence. It also demonstrates an intrinsic motivation to learn. These qualities will take Kiana far in whatever she chooses to do with her life.

Qualifications are demonstrated through conceptual, compositional, and performance mediums. In addition to these qualities, the Burrowes Scholar understands the importance of the individual and the community in any musical endeavor. This year’s Burrowes Scholar in Music is awarded to Kylee Waller. Kylie is an outstanding student who has the work ethic and ability to accomplish any goal she sets for herself. The honor is deserved and I know she will continue to maintain her high standards both within and beyond the discipline of music. Congratulations, Kylee!!

Alyssa Zaepfel English/Language Arts Mrs. Jennifer Risser

Bravery is not always seen in the overt acts of courage: fighting dragons, going to war, saving small children from a burning building. But rather, true bravery, shows up in the quiet moments of the every day. True bravery is showing up, doing the next right thing, and staying true to oneself. All of which can be seen in the daily actions, writings, and speeches given by the wonderful Miss Alyssa Zaepfel. Alyssa always shows up and always does the next right thing. Her small steps toward making our class and this school a better place actually have a ripple effect into events that I’m sure will change the world of everyone who comes in contact with her. Alyssa is not afraid of being herself. She is not afraid of doing her best. And she is not afraid of how that makes others think of her. That, to me, is true bravery. She is an exemplary student. Rarely in my teaching career have I had a student enter my room with chapters and chapters of stories and novels already written. Rarely have I seen a student engage with and interpret literature in the way Alyssa is able to do. She seeks deeper meaning and purpose in everything she does. She is able to use words to make true connections with other people. She sees the power that words hold in our world and she uses them for good. Words have power to change any situation, and with Alyssa at the ready, I am excited to see where this world is headed.

Sara Blochberger German Mr. Alexander Breitkrutz

Sara is a phenomenal young woman who possesses many qualities. She consistently earns grades in the A-range in all of her accelerated classes. In German class, Sara is successful in all four fields of foreign language learning: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Whether it be tests or quizzes, projects or handouts, open-ended questions or comparing and contrasting, she has mastered it all. Sara has been a great role model. She does not only come over as extremely smart, but is also compassionate, creative, caring, and fun to be with. She shares her talent without intimidating other students. She is able to learn new words and comprehend new grammar concepts with ease and puts a lot of time and effort into every assignment she completes. Very few students in Sara’s age group are able to perform consistently at the same high qualitative level like she does while keeping a busy schedule with sports and work related activities. Because of her good-natured personality, other students often choose to be on her team, and they ask for her advice if they have questions. Additionally, Sara works equally well on her own. Her discipline and mature behavior are her keys to success when completing the most challenging tasks. She exhibits commendable critical thinking skills and is able to make connections to other subject areas where applicable. I am very privileged to have such an outstanding student in my class. Congratulations to Sara Blochberger for being selected as the Burrowes Scholar in German!

Preston Brazzle Mandarin Chinese Mr. Brian Fisher

Standard pronunciation. Accurate tones. Crisp characters. Quick vocabulary recall. An ear for the language. A passion for precision. These are some of the many reasons why Preston Brazzle has been selected as the 2016-2017 Burrowes Scholar in Mandarin Chinese. Ever since his first day of Mandarin I class and including his current involvement in Mandarin III, Preston has demonstrated an extraordinary gift in acquiring and producing Mandarin. There are times when it appears he has had a special microchip implanted in his brain that enables him to rattle off the language, but in reality, Preston has invested a significant amount of time and energy to reach his current level. His assignments and in-class participation reflect the many hours he has devoted to practicing, reviewing, and reinforcing the material. Besides his excellence as a learner, Preston is also a humble leader. Given his affinity with the language, many students look to Preston for help, questions, or feedback. He is always willing to help and he offers his best in a respectful, sensitive manner. His relaxed personality makes him easily approachable and trusted. Preston’s life outside of the classroom keeps him busy, too. He participates in chorus, Madrigal singers, orchestra, marching band, jazz band, and concert band. During the most recent winter concert, Preston left an auditorium full of music-picky peers in shock and awe as he beatboxed his way through “Mary, Did You Know?” by Pentatonix. It indeed is a great honor to bestow this honor to Preston. His hard work has truly paid off, and regardless of the road he travels, he is sure to leave a memorable mark on all of his spheres of influence.

Megan Breneman Spanish Mrs. Jacqueline St. John

Megan Breneman has distinguished herself as one of the best and most consistent students of Spanish here at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. She is currently enrolled in Spanish IV, where she leads the class with the highest grade point average. Megan demonstrates outstanding abilities in comprehension of the Spanish language both in written and oral form. Although a quiet and reserved young lady, Megan possesses a strong desire to excel and to learn. This desire motivates her to be actively engaged and to participate enthusiastically in all classroom activities. She shows a true love for conversing in the Spanish language by being a top participant in class. With an energetic attitude, Megan goes above and beyond the basic requirements by enhancing her work with a personal touch to make her work and projects stand out from the rest. Her grades and achievements are not her only attributes. Megan has a very cheerful and friendly disposition. Always positive and pleasant, she treats everyone with the utmost respect while being kind, supportive, and caring. She is a humble, sensitive, diligent, and very mature young lady. Her presence in class has been greatly enjoyed by all of her Spanish teachers.. Megan plans to continue her studies after high school with a minor in Spanish. With her tenacious work ethic and her superior Spanish skills, Megan will experience many successes in her future.

Eric Buck Business Education Ms. Michele Meyer Mr. Stephen Spealman

Over the past several years, Eric Buck has stood out from the many students in the Business Education program. Eric first became involved with the department as a freshman by taking Introduction to Business. From the first day it became apparent that he had a special interest for all things business related. Throughout the semester, Eric proved time and time again that he was able to grasp the most difficult concepts and apply them in practical problems and simulations. During his sophomore year, Eric continued his academic success in Managing Your Finances and Introduction to Marketing & Sales. Both of these courses require that students possess analytical yet creative minds, as well as a desire to go beyond the most obvious answer. Early on it was clear that Eric excelled in these areas. Eric consistently went into greater detail and fully explored many of the more complex questions. He worked tirelessly to ensure that he always arrived at the most logical and well thought out solutions. He also has a deep understanding of the necessary concepts, and a growing knowledge of advanced techniques that is proven on a daily basis through class problems, projects, and activities. As a junior, Eric is taking Accounting I. Throughout the semester he has shown an attention to detail that is the hallmark of great accountants. His dedication to neatness, thorough responses, and application of concepts is remarkable. Every problem he completes is done to the best of his ability, and on the rare occasions where feedback is required, he immediately makes the appropriate changes to ensure success on challenging problems in the future. Because of these skills, and his amazing personal characteristics, the Business Education Department is truly lucky to count Eric as one of its members. And so, it is with both honor and pleasure that Eric Whitaker Buck be proclaimed Burrowes Scholar in Business Education.

Emily Frey Family and Consumer Science Mrs. Cathy Lynch

It is my pleasure to nominate Emily Frey for the Burrowes Scholar award this year for Family and Consumer Science. I have had the opportunity to have Emily as a student in both my FCS classes in eighth and eleventh grades. Emily is a very talented, creative, and conscientious worker. She takes pride in her work and shows a desire to learn. Emily demonstrates mature behavior and has outstanding leadership qualities. She has always gone the extra step with her class projects, which has impressed me and her peers. Emily is thoughtful, caring, and has a cheerful personality. Along with being an excellent student, she has been on the Honor Roll every semester for the past three years, Emily is also a member of the Interact Club. It has been a pleasure having Emily as a student in my classes. I truly admire the dedication and effort that she gives to her education. Congratulations, Emily, on a job well done!

Steven Greenwood Mathematics Mr. John Achille

Diligence is the earnest, conscientious application of our energy to accomplish what we’ve undertaken. When we are diligent, we pay careful attention to detail and are dedicated to achieving quality results. Diligence means that we are continually working toward our goals, making use of what resources and opportunities are available. Diligence does not rely on talent, but employs commitment, industry, and perseverance to transform vision into reality. This describes Steven Greenwood in my classroom. Steven is an incredible math student. He takes pride in his work and exhibits focused work habits. I am most impressed with the time and detail he puts forth in completing assignments. Steven has this calm persistence as he works through problems in class. He has a strong desire to always do his very best. Presently, Steven is taking Advanced Placement Calculus, the highest level math course offered at the high school. He recently took the AP Calculus national exam and I predict that he will achieve a five on this difficult exam, which is the highest score that can be attained. Steven is a phenomenal student and an exceptional young man. It is with honor and pleasure that I proclaim Steven Greenwood a Burrowes Scholar in Mathematics.

Steven Greenwood Physical Education Mr. Derrick Morgan

Steven Greenwood is being recognized as the 2017 male Burrowes Scholar in Health and Physical Education for his leadership, service to others, academic achievement, and work ethic, in addition to many other great attributes that he possesses. His workmanlike approach and passion to refine and perfect all items within my class is clearly evident. His academic success speaks for itself but it is the intangible qualities that make Steven a Burrowes Scholar. His innate ability to “lead by example” is seen by others and is contagious. Not only is he a great leader, but he also has the compassion and understanding to work with other students regardless of the task at hand, and his drive to succeed is unmatched. He is a unique and diverse student who not only excels in physical education but also other aspects of his life. These include his musical and theatrical accomplishments here at L-S and at the County and District level, his involvement in youth group with relation to our community, and as a distinguished member of NHS. These are only a few of Steven’s accolades. His track record of becoming a Burrowes Scholar for the third time is not a mistake. Steven is one of those students that comes around every so often and we as teachers get to witness his greatness during his time here. I am looking forward to seeing what Steven does in the future because I know it will be great! Congratulations!

Page 21: THE BURROWES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Steven Greenwood Social Studies Mrs. Christy McCanna

Steven Greenwood strongly exemplifies the traits one would expect to see in a Burrowes Scholar. However, while his grades are exceptional, it is his desire to learn and to grow as a student that makes him so impressive. Many students are able to earn outstanding grades but few are able to combine that with a true desire to understand the subject. For Steve, the grade is not the end of the journey rather it is more important for him to know why an answer was correct or incorrect. It is not uncommon for Steve to miss only a question or two on a test and still stay after class to get a full explanation. Steve doesn’t just want the correct answer, he wants the background to the question and how that topic may come into play later on in the class. What is also notable about Steve is his likability. One would think that his peers would grow resentful of his success, but they genuinely root for him, look to him for clarity, and enjoy working with him. Beyond his academic success is Steve’s commitment to his other activities including many music ensembles, the fall play and spring musical, FCS, NHS, and the tennis team. Steve is an extraordinary young man, an involved member of the Lampeter-Strasburg High School community, and one of the hardest workers around. For all of these reasons, the Social Studies Department is proud to name Steven Greenwood as our Burrowes Scholar.

Olivia Honert Visual Art Mr. Scott Cantrell

Olivia Honert is an exceptional young artist. Her peers and teachers are well aware of her lofty determination, drawing skills, painting ability, and critical consideration. Olivia’s ambitiously scrutinized artwork attracts an audience that admires her mastery of medium and representational realism as well as her illustrative hand and considered design sense. Her paintings have a depth and maturity that very few high school students can accomplish and are very lively and ambitious pieces. While she is a talented two dimensional artist, she outrivals most current students in the areas of jewelry and metalsmithing as well as clay and sculpture. Not only does she produce excellent artwork in all art classes, but she is also an outstanding student of the arts. Academically she is at the top of her class, which is evident in her knowledge of art’s vast history and of technical terms and skills. She is inquisitive, highly motivated, and has a passion for learning that is inspiring to all. This year she received an honorable mention in the Lancaster Young Artist Show and an honorable mention in the Scholastic Art Awards; both shows recognize the best young artists in Lancaster County. Congratulations to Olivia Honert for being the ideal selection for 2017 Burrowes Scholar in Visual Art!

Page 22: THE BURROWES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Laura Komara Instrumental Music Mr. Larry Royer

It is an honor and a pleasure to nominate Laura Komara as this year’s Burrowes Scholar in Instrumental Music/Band. Over the years Laura has proven herself to be an excellent musician and a very dedicated member of the ensembles of which she is a member. She has participated in the concert band, jazz ensemble, pit orchestra, full orchestra and the marching band all three years in high school. Her talents have earned her participation in the Lancaster Lebanon Music Educator’s Association honors band festival for the past two years. Laura has become a leader throughout her time in all of these ensembles. Her talent and musicianship have earned the respect of the students with who she performs. More importantly to me, though, is the spirit of camaraderie that she has been able to create. The students in her section – especially in the marching band – always comment about how well their section gets along, the fun they have, and the pride they feel pertaining to their performance. They may not all realize what the catalyst is to all of those positive feelings, but it usually comes back to Laura and the way she serves as a leader. It has been a pleasure working with Laura. I look forward to seeing the legacy of commitment and diligence that she will imprint on the instrumental music department during her senior year, encouraging everyone to aspire to the band’s slogan - “A Tradition of Quality, A Commitment to Excellence.”

Melissa Long Orchestra Mr. Robert Shaubach

It is with great pride that I recommend Melissa Long as the 2017 Lampeter-Strasburg High School Burrowes Scholar in Orchestra. I have had the genuine pleasure of working with Melissa for eight years, from grades four through 11. During that time Melissa showed exceptional talent, a strong desire to achieve, willingness set goals, and the persistence to bring them to fruition. Melissa’s musical contributions to the orchestra program at Lampeter-Strasburg High School are centered on her participation as principal violinist in the High School Orchestra. She also serves as an instrumentalist in the pit orchestra for all-school musical theater productions. In addition, Melissa has auditioned for and been accepted into honors music ensembles sponsored by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association. Her preparation, attention to detail, and musical expressions have consistently been at a high level, and, more importantly, continue to grow in depth and breadth. Melissa’s musical successes and performance contributions to the orchestra are wonderful and truly valued. However, she also has great impact on our school and community through her willingness to serve others by volunteering to complete more mundane tasks behind the scenes with no concern for personal gain. These traits are exemplary and have proven to be key components of her achievements. It is with great respect and admiration that I nominate Melissa Long as the 2017 Burrowes Scholar in Orchestra.

Aaron Musser Technology Education Mr. Adrian BakerMr. Todd Garber, and Mr. Adam Zurn

Aaron Musser has been a diligent student who approaches his studies with rigor and dedication. He understands the importance of a well-rounded education being successful in not only his accelerated core academic courses but also in electives like computer programming, German One, and six technology education courses. During his freshmen year, Aaron took Intro to CADD / Drafting, Intro to Information Technology, and Wood Technology. He excelled in all three of those courses, earning high marks. Last year, Aaron took Wood Technology II, and Architectural Drawing. This year, Aaron furthered his technological studies by taking Design Engineering. In addition to being an outstanding student, Aaron has proven himself to be a productive young man by participating in the Fellowship of Christian Students and Interact Club. It has been a pleasure and honor to have him as a student during the past three years. We know Aaron will continue to be a lifelong learner.

Noah Pritchard Science Mrs. Pamela Kochel

Noah Pritchard is on his way to being a Renaissance Man. He contributes in all of his classes whether it be AP Chemistry or Calculus, Accelerated Physics or American Government, HACC English, or Guitar. He further shows his diverse interests in his club activities like Model UN, LS News, Outdoor Club, Ski & Snowboard Club, Interact Club, Varsity Club, and Spanish Club. He also represents L-S on the cross-country team and runs in winter track. In the classroom, Noah catches on quickly to new information and processes it intensively. He often asks questions of his teachers that show his deeper understanding and extended application of concepts. He has a calm demeanor that indicates he juggles many challenging tasks well. He does well in lab and expresses his understanding accurately and concisely. He was recognized in a science fair in ninth grade. In this, his junior year, he has doubled-up in science taking AP Chemistry and Accelerated Physics. Most notably, he made time to be part of an team of seven students who competed in the Engineering the Environment TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, & Science) competition this spring. His team placed third in the local event. I believe that he will be a superbly qualified scientist and it is my privilege to proclaim Noah Pritchard as the 2017 Burrowes Scholar in Science.

Kyle Spotts Agriculture Mrs. Holly OberholtzerMrs. K. Janae McMichael

Kyle Spotts is being recognized as the 2017 Burrowes Scholar in Agriculture for his devoted service to and participation in the Lampeter-Strasburg High School’s Agriculture Department. Kyle is an individual who works hard, is driven to produce quality work, and though quiet, evidences strong leadership skills and reliability. Kyle has been enrolled in five agriculture education classes and has participated as an active member of the Garden Spot FFA since middle school. He has served as the Chapter Vice President and Student Advisor as well as a member of the Field Committee. Kyle has set the standard high for other chapter members by his constant willingness to show up and make sure the job gets done. Kyle has competed successfully in multiple Career Development Events (CDE) such as Dairy Cattle Evaluation, Small Gas Engines, Safe Tractor Driving and Agriculture Technology and Mechanical Systems. Kyle has developed Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE) in the areas on On-Farm Placement/Employment at Southview Farms and Glenville Dairy Farms and has completed several exploratory projects on various tractor restorations. His most recent tractor restoration, a 1952 Farmall Cub, was exhibited at the 2017 Pennsylvania Farm Show. Kyle plans to pursue a career in production agriculture after graduating from high school. His many experiences with his SAEs and agricultural equipment will surely help him to be successful in those endeavors.

Brooke Strubel Physical Education Ms. Faith Cowell

It is the pleasure of Faith Cowell and the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Health and Physical Education Department to recognize Brooke Strubel as this year’s eleventh grade Burrowes Scholar in Physical Education. Brooke has been excelling in physical education classes throughout her high school career, and she continues to do so in her physical education class this semester. Brooke is one of the top players in each unit that has been played in Team and Individual Sports so far. Another fact that needs to be realized is that Brooke is one of only three girls in her entire class. Her ability to play hard and play well and not be intimidated by the very good male athletes in her class is impressive! During our racquetball unit - an individual sport - Brooke made it to the semi-finals in our double-elimination tournament keeping up with and defeating many fine male athletes! Brooke has been playing softball, where she once again excels, since she was eight years old. She earned the JV MVP award and moved up to play with the varsity team last year as they earned State Runner-Up honors! She also plays roller hockey with former L-S ice hockey players at the Lampeter YMCA in her spare time. Brooke is not shy about challenging herself academically either; she has earned honor roll recognition every year since sixth grade. This love of challenging herself by competing against the best will help Brooke to achieve much in life!

Page 25: THE BURROWES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Alexander Williams English Mr. Calvin Esh

Each afternoon, students at the high school enjoy the afternoon announcements featuring Al Williams’ heartfelt comments and monotone delivery. He always has good things to say, reminding students he “loves them all,” that they “are all amazing,” and regularly wishing students “a fantastic day.” And all too often we hear, “Listen up for today’s important announcement. There are no announcements today.” Al is a serious student, with an ability to read and analyze, to write clearly and in depth at the highest level, earning the grades expected of a Burrowes Scholar. That said, he’s probably better known for his wry sense of humor. When he begins an answer in a class discussion with a slow, “Well …” we never know whether the answer will be deadly serious or the dead-pan humor that provides the highlight of many a classmate’s day. In addition to his academic pursuits, Al is also busy with music and drama. An award-winning musician at the state level, he’s also long been dying to get on the L-S stage, playing a stiff not just once—in Pippin (as well as a hangman)—but again in Arsenic and Old Lace. More recently, he took on the role of a worm in High School Musical. It’s been a joy to have Al Williams in my A.P. Literature and Composition class. Al, I’m sure you’ll “knock ‘em dead” as you leave L-S and head off to college and beyond. Sincere congratulations on being named Burrowes Scholar in English!

Alexander Williams Vocal Music Mr. Erik Welchans

As a music educator, I have the unique opportunity to work with student musicians who impress and inspire me each and every day. Alexander Williams is one of those students. Al is involved in all aspects of the vocal music department at the high school. He is a member of the Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers and has participated in our Spring Musicals. He has earned A grades in all of his music classes and a definite A+ for his attitude and leadership! Alexander Williams is an all-around, outstanding student and musician; skilled in both voice and piano. Al has a beautiful and rich sounding tenor voice and continues to be a great role model for other aspiring vocalists. This year, Al was a member of the County, District, and Regional Chorus Festivals and most recently was selected for the prestigious PMEA All-State Chorus Festival, which was held in Erie, PA from April 19-22. Al’s talents as a musician will continue to grow and I know that he will succeed at whatever the future holds. Way to go, Al!
