Dear Friends:

I abhor change. However, it seems that the only thing that is constant is change. At this

time of year many things are changing. Spring brings a renewal to the world: soon school

will be through and some will graduate and move from classroom to careers or from high

school to college. As Leo Tolstoy once wrote: "Spring is the time of plans and projects." I

just changed the calendar today and could not believe it is already May. I also can not be-

lieve that on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 we will have our final technical meeting of the 2011-

2012 chapter year. As our tradition dictates we welcome spouses and guests at this meet-

ing. The Calumet Chapter is very pleased to have Chuck Carlson who has spoken to the

Chapter a couple times in the past. The first time Chuck Carlson spoke was at my first

meeting as President of the Calumet Chapter in September of 2008. Some of you may re-

member Northwest Indiana was flooded and a few people were able to make it out to

Theo’s. Now four years later we will try the same venue with Chuck Carlson and hopefully

this time, without the extra water.

As many of you know during the summer, the board works to bring you the best technical programs that we can and frequently, I ask you to provide your suggestions or volunteer to speak. This year we are bringing some excitement to the Chapter Year End Finale and are asking you, our valued member, to suggest a speaker for the upcoming year. We are having a drawing on the suggestions and if yours is chosen, you are going to win a $25.00 gift card to TGI Fridays. Entries can be made that night or before by emailing me at [email protected]. I need the name and contact information of your suggestion. You can suggest as many speakers as you wish and you can even suggest yourself. The winner does not need to be present. As we conclude this chapter year, I wish to thank all of you for your support and hope that

you will continue to help us spread the word about the Calumet Chapter of the IMA.

Hope to see you at the Chapter Year End Finale Tuesday May 15, 2012.

Regards,

Mark T. Camarena, CMA

Webinar: How to Be a Transformational Financial Executive

Companies are becoming increasingly adept launching incremental improvement efforts, but they continue to struggle with large scale change. Given the current and anticipated future business environment, many organizations will likely be faced with executing large scale – and even transformational – change. In addition, there ap-pears to be a trend to have the CFO become accountable for IT as CIOs are increas-ingly reporting to the CFO. It is because of these trends that CFOs and senior IT ex-ecutives need to become adept at leading or at least being part of the core team in launching and successfully executing large scale change. Please join us as we dive deep into leading transformational change through in-depth real life stories of how it has been done. Andrew Spanyi has found that few financial executives do so successfully even though most have a vested role in strategic plan-ning and also determine what the organization measures and monitors. Learning Objectives: After this webinar, attendees will be able to: 1. Understand the fundamental values and beliefs that a financial executive needs

to embrace to succeed with transformation.

2. Identify the obstacles that are typically faced, and how can these be overcome.

3. Describe best practices for a financial executive to use to play a leading role in transformational change.

4. Compare the experience of three organizations where the financial executive played a key role in large scale change.

Goals Will Lead to Success by Melissa Leonard, CMA Product Manager

Do you have feedback on what you have read or suggestions on future topics? Maybe you

are studying for the exam or have recently passed and want to share tactics you used. Email

Gleim at [email protected] with your comments..

One of the most common mistakes I find when candidates prepare for the CMA exam is not setting specific goals. Having a goal when you plan to prepare for and pass the CMA exam is a key factor to your suc-cess. I think this is summed up best by American author and motivational speaker Earl Nightingale, who said, "People with goals succeed because they know where they're going." Ultimately, your goal should be to pass the CMA exam as quickly as possible. When you delay taking the exam, you delay taking advantage of the benefits that certification provides. To combat this problem, it is ex-tremely important to register for and schedule exams early. Scheduling early es-tablishes your finish line. If you are studying with the mindset that you will take the exam at some vague future time, it opens the door to procrastination. On the other hand, a firm date set in advance enables you to work each day to be ready to pass the exam on the date you established. When planning for your next exam part, map out a calendar of what you will need to study each week leading up to the de-sired exam date. For example, if you wish to take Part 1 of the CMA exam in the next couple of months, create a study schedule and decide what will be a suitable date. Make sure the date you have in mind falls during one of the 3 testing windows (January/February, May/June, September/October). When you use the Gleim Review System you have access to a Personal Coun-selor who can help you create your study

plan and meet your exam goals. Immedi-ately registering for and scheduling your exam well in advance 1) allows you to have a date that is convenient for you and 2) provides you with a finish line that forces you to plan and focus even during the times of year when you can be easily distracted. Keep in mind, that it is important to care-fully schedule your exam. This is why you must create a schedule and identify the most convenient date for you. Candidates who cancel or reschedule their exam test-ing date within 30 days of their scheduled appointment will be charged a $50 fee, payable to Prometric. In conclusion, if you are studying for a part and have not yet scheduled an exam date or you are thinking about studying for a part, use the Gleim CMA Review System and work with your Personal Counselor to create a study plan together. Once the study plan is complete, you should immedi-ately schedule your exam date. Much of the battle of getting through the CMA exam is keeping yourself focused on completing each part. By scheduling early, you set the goal to commit to studying regularly and to pass the exam.
