During our first year, we focused on building our membership by bringing passionate and enthusiastic women together to enhance the wellness of Gaston County. UNC Women’s Basketball Coach and Gastonia native, Sylvia Hatchell, kicked us off with an inspiring presentation about perseverance and winning the game of life. In our second year, we focused on increasing our membership and building our accumulated fund, or corpus. This is important so that we can become a sustainable organization with a healthy future. We have accomplished the things that we set out to do, and in our third year we will shift our focus and our funds toward a project that will best meet the needs of our county. This project and the direction of WOW will be decided by you, our members. Be sure to join us on November 29 at the Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County’s Johan Newcombe Event Center where you’ll have the opportunity to hear more about some amazing ways we can help our community. We will vote on creating a steering committee to begin researching and molding all these fabulous ideas into our “signature” project. In addition, we will welcome Sharon Decker as our inspirational speaker at the November 29 meeting. She is our past Secretary of Commerce, and true Gaston County advocate and you won’t want to miss her presentation. Please RSVP to Sandra Kelly at 704.834.4034 or Sandra.Kelly@ caromonthealth.org by November 23 to reserve your seat. This is a very exciting time for us, and we are thrilled to share it with each and every one of you. We sincerely thank you for caring about our community and our neighbors, and for taking an active role in making Gaston County a healthier home. Sincerely, Natalie Tindol, Chair Elect, and your Executive Team Sharon Decker Special Guest Our special guest at the November 29 meeting is Sharon Decker, who will speak with us about the impact that committed, passionate women leaders can have in their communities. As a demonstrated leader in growing business and shaping communities, Sharon has been a champion for women and her home state of North Carolina. Sharon is a highly-successful executive with an impressive history. She began her career with Duke Energy, where she spent 17 years before becoming the founding President of The Lynnwood Foundation. She later served as President of the Doncaster division of Tanner Companies before creating the Tapestry Group in 2004. Governor Pat McCrory appointed Sharon Secretary of Commerce in 2013, where she served for two years before becoming President of NURAY Media in January 2015. In the fall of 2015, she found herself back in Western North Carolina, where she now serves as the Chief Operating Officer of Tryon International Equestrian Center. We are excited to welcome Sharon and look forward to an exciting evening.

Letter from NatalieWe are so excited about how far we have come in only two years, and 2017 promises to be the best yet for our WOW group!

During our first year, we focused on building our membership by bringing passionate and enthusiastic women together to enhance the wellness of Gaston County. Boys & Girls Club Wellness ProjectThe third quarter has ended on a CaroMont Health Foundation grant-funded pilot partnership project between CaroMont's Wellness division and the Boys & Girls Club of Gaston County, and the results have been impressive.

This program employs the success of existing 5-2-1-0 programs with K-8 graders in Gaston County through the Boys & Girls Club. 5-2-1-0 started in Maine as the LetsGo! program of Barbara Bush Children's Hospital as a way to reduce and prevent the incidence of childhood obesity, and has been adapted by programs across the country.

The Boys & Girls program continued to see success in the third quarter, with 114 students and 31 members of Club staff participating in and receiving education on the 2 and 1 topics. In the fourth and final quarter of this pilot program, the Wellness Team is excited for the final Health Fair in December.

Community Centered Health The majority of factors that determine a person’s health status are outside the control of the health clinic – things like education, income, insurance status, employment, housing conditions, nutrition and physical environment. Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC Foundation and the Prevention Institute believe that by improving community conditions, the health of community members will improve. The model for identifying needed change and engaging community members to make the change is called Community Centered Health, and it is currently being utilized in the Highland Community in Gaston County.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC Foundation (BCBSNC Foundation) embarked on its Community Centered Health path in 2014 with outreach events across the state to let people know how they could be part of this work. More than twenty groups applied to be included in the initial action learning phase. A dozen groups from across the state, including a group from Gaston County, were chosen for action learning. They received intense training on Community Centered Health and began to engage community partners in the model. Gaston County’s group included representatives from CaroMont Health, Gaston County Division of Public Health, Gaston Family Health Services, HealthNet Gaston and former Gastonia Mayor Jennie Stultz.

Three of the original twelve groups received an eighteen-month planning grant to embark on the next phase of the model. Gaston County was one of the three communities chosen, along with Buncombe County (Asheville) and Guilford County (Greensboro).

Grant funds included hiring staff and the Gaston County group went through an intensive search for just the right candidate, one who had community ties along with the skill set needed to engage community members in this work. Donyel Barber fit the bill – she is well-known to many in Gaston County and in Highland and has successfully worked to help individuals overcome difficult circumstances and improve their lives.

Ms. Barber’s office is located in the Highland Health Center – itself a collaboration between Gaston Family Health Services, Gaston County Division of Public Health and the Highland Community. Her current work includes letting community partners know about Community Centered Health, working with clinical staff to understand the prevalent health issues in Highland and engaging the community in identifying barriers to good health and formulating solutions to reduce or eliminate those barriers.

If you would like to be involved in Community Centered Health in Highland, please contact Donyel Barber at [email protected] or call 704.853.5046.

Healthier Highland Family Reunion ReportOn July 9, Gaston Family Health Services hosted the Healthier Highland Family Reunion event as a way to connect with the community and learn more about the ways to improve the health in those areas.

The Lee Institute surveyed attendees about their health during the event and submitted the following recommendations to the Community Centered Health team:

1. Establish partnerships with grocery stores and/or Farmer's Markets.

2. Expand free or affordable sports, exercise and dance activities for youth.

3. Create monthly gatherings, like the Family Reunion event, as nutrition education, sports and activity opportunities.

4. Centralize coordination of healthier activities with a recognized leader.

5. Engage law enforcement in sports and healthy activities to build cooperation and trust.

6. Target food and exercise activities that create jobs for residents.

7. Continue to clarify resident needs around medical access and drug/alcohol rehabilitation.

A WOW Fact to ponder:The following pie charts note results from a recent health fair conducted by Gaston Family Health Services. Four hundred and one students ages 5 to 11 were evaluated in the 28052 zip code. The children were evaluated for blood sugar levels and pre-diabetic conditions (A1C) as well as body mass index. This important fact is one our WOW members should consider as we develop an initiative to fund in 2017.

WOW May Meeting at the Gastonia Farmers MarketSavory aromas filled the air as members of WOW gathered at the Gastonia Farmers Market on the evening of May 3rd for its second quarterly meeting of 2016.

Mike Ryan led a crew of talented food artisans from CaroMont Health in cooking and serving platters of tasty appetizers and desserts, and Chef Josh Howard shared helpful and healthy cooking tips on how to keep caloric and fat levels down without sacrificing the taste of foods.

After members went back for seconds of the tasty offerings and had their questions answered at the cooking station, the meeting featured a series of additional speakers who shared information centered on the central theme of “Farm to Table.”

Renee Southard from Organic Marketplace discussed issues surrounding GMO’s that she explained are frequently added to foods.

Jane Sumner, representing the Rotary Garden project in downtown Gastonia, talked about the role that the garden serves in providing vegetables to a number of impoverished families in Gaston County. She also asked WOW members to consider spending some time in the garden as volunteers.

Julie Flowers, Area Consumer Horticulture Agent with the Gaston and Cleveland County NC Cooperative Extension Office, explained how easy it can be to start a container garden and discussed the advantages of raising a small crop of vegetables that can be easily harvested on a backyard patio.

Tony Pasour, director of education at The Schiele Museum, talked about his family’s farming heritage. He also shared how farming has evolved in Gaston County through the years and the important role that farmers still serve in helping to meet the food needs of local communities.

At the end of the meeting, members received a WOW bag filled with information about healthy cooking and helpful facts about vegetables, along with a comprehensive listing of farmers’ markets in Gaston County.

WOW Supports Heart WalkMore than a dozen WOW members hit the pavement on May 11 at the CaroMont Heart Walk in support of the Heart Society of Gaston County.

This local non-profit helps meet the heart-related needs of individuals in our community. The ladies joined CaroMont Health employees and other supporters for a one-mile walk around the campus of CaroMont Regional Medical Center. This year's event raised more than $12,000 in support of the Heart Society of Gaston County.

WOW Investment Opportunity in 2017: Time to RenewWOW has grown from a concept to a well-developed fund of the CaroMont Health Foundation with a growing membership in just two years. Women who joined between October and December of 2014 each invested $1,000 to be Leading Ladies – or charter members of the Fund. Since then, more ladies have invested $500 to become members.

With 2017 just around the corner, it is time for us to ask you to reinvest in another year of WOW.

For an investment of at least $500, each member will receive the following:

• Invitations to quarterly meetings, each of which will have a health-related focus and action points.

• Opportunities to serve on committees to further impact change.

• Quarterly newsletters filled with information about WOW and pictures from past events.

• The chance to come together with like-minded women committed to making a real and lasting difference in the health of Gaston County. Through dedication to our own health and the health of our families, mentoring relationships and beginning the process of funding health-related initiatives, we are making things happen in our community.

For more information about continuing your investment in WOW in 2017, please email Jennie Stultz at [email protected] or Natalie Tindol at [email protected] or call the CaroMont Health Foundation office at 704.834.4034.

By mid-December, each investor will receive a form in the mail that will list three options:

1. Respond by check or credit card by December 31, 2016, to receive the tax benefit in 2016.

2. Respond by check or credit card in January to receive the tax benefit in 2017.

3. Pay in installments of $100 per month from January through May of 2016 and receive the tax benefit in 2017.
